Focke-Wulf FW 190 WWII Fighter Startup. BIG Backfire, Yow!

  • This is an engine startup of Rudy Frasca's new-build Flug Werk-built Focke-Wulf FW 190 at the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, California. A very impressive replica of the WWII FW-190, this aircraft was built in Germany and was assembled by Matt Nightingale in California with quite a few innovative features (i.e. newly designed oil coolers, for one). There are several other of these aircraft flying today by lucky owners. Quite an impressive aircraft, just beautifully built and it includes a number of original WWII Focke-Wulf components. And it sounds great too! This aircraft is flown quite often and it is currently intended for it to be shown at the Planes of Fame's annual airshow, Oshkosh and the Reno Air Races in 2011. Nice!

The big round engines have always been temperamental with starting, which gives them a unique charm. Also remember that wartime aircraft were brand-new at the time and had a skilled ground crew to keep them warmed up and maintained in top condition.

Probably a trick or two that's been lost as well. I watched a video of a 109 pilot showing how to start it. He shows one way with his hands all crossed up and says that's what the book says but don't do that and shows the much improved way they figured out to do it. He said the book way was awkward and they were finicky and apt not to start if you didn't have everything just right. That unfortunately is just the sort of knowledge that tends to get lost.

@carbster010: Yes, this aircraft does have a P&W R-2800 engine. It is very slightly larger in diameter than the original BMW 801, but it fit. It did present some oil-cooling problems but they are being resolved. The fellow in the plaid shirt and shorts seen checking the aircraft while it was running is Matt Nightingale and he was the one who put the aircraft together with the R-2800. Some of the other FW-190s completed have the Russian ASh-82 (M-82) engine.

It has an original WWII BMW 801 engine, the only one flying today. Even the ORIGINAL radio was restored to operational status and just that took an entire year to complete. The aircraft is now at Paul Allen's Museum, the Flying Heritage Collection in Everett, Washington, USA and it will be flown occasionally.

He much preferred to see Mustangs, Lightnings, Thunderbolts and Spitfires sharing the sky with his bomb group.

+Wayland Lee This one is not a restoration but a Flugwerk replica from a project in Germany. The project goal was a lower cost option for the high performance warbird collector, lower insurance, etc. They were sold as bare kits with buyers completing assembly. The owner for this one went in a new direction and installed a P&W R-2800 and a custom cowling. Very nice. Flugwerk sold about 21 examples, but only around 9 or 10 are complete and flying.

They were sold as semi-complete kits (for lower costs) and the buyer of this replica has added an 18 cylinder R2800 with a slightly larger cowl. The original Fw190 had a 14 cylinder radial.

Don't know if it was built in Germany, but I saw one in the construction phase in a hangar at Frasca Field in Champagne Il, sometime near 1998, and if you look at the wheel door cover, it says 'FRASCA'. +Paul Moffat It is one of the Flugwerk replicas that were sold as kits to buyers to complete construction. Flugwerk was a German company but the kits were manufactured in Romania. Flugwerk founder Claus Colling passed away a few years ago and the Fw-190 project and parts were sold to Gosshawk in Arizona. The builders for Frasca did not use the Russian/Chinese ASh engine (14 cylinder) but went with an R-2800 Pratt. Only nine or ten of the twenty-one Flugwerks have flown, with a few accidents. I think another buyer is also planning to use an R-2800.

  • @FiveCentsPlease

These new-build replicas had a new design three-blade prop with electric prop controls. One of the first flying suffered a prop failure with a blade going into full feather with severe engine vibration and a crash. The four blade prop is the original Tu-2 prop for the ASh-82 engines in the replicas, and was a substitute until the prop failure was corrected. The fix was to switch to mechanical prop controls and the three blade is back.

  • @FiveCentsPlease

No, this replica flies with an R-2800 while other replicas use the ASh-82 14-cylinder radial. There is currently only one original Fw190 flying with the BMW 801 with a couple of other restorations in progress.

The F8F was built to counter the kamikazes in the Pacific...The FW-190 was a great plane in anybody's book, and wasn't matched until the Spitfire Mark IX. It didn't do as well as most Allied types above 20,000 feet, and that was fixed with the FW-190 Dora long nose, truly one of the best fighters of the war.

Not sure about that. I believe it was more made to Intercept in general, It could out climb everything as of what I have read.

gcwcab1994 Not out climb, but nothing in the air could roll as fast as the FW190. It just wasn't that special above 20,000 feet, until the advent of the long nose Dora model. Altitude changes everything when discussing various attributes on fighters. The Mark 9 Spit could certainly out climb a FW. Even the later P-47's could do so...I just attended a discussion with 4 P-47 pilots at Planes of Fame and they said this as well. That didn't apply to the early models, however. BTW, it was great to hear these old guys speak, we are losing them fast these days.

Doug Castleman I guess P47's are great match(more than a match to be honest) against Antons but Dora FWs had greater climb rates and better performance in medium ALT I assume.

When i said out climb everything, I meant the Bearcat.

The R2800 is 2800 cubic inches displacement. The BMW 801 is around 2650 cubic inches. It is only slightly smaller.

The business model for the project was to offer a lower-cost warbird package for buyers, so they were sold as unfinished airframes with an engine that had a good parts supply. Buyers completed the project with all electrical, hydraulics, and avionics. Owner-assembly allowed lower insurance costs and ownership costs. The base price for the kits was 555,000 Euro. The entire project, including fuselage jigs, and remaining parts and planes is now for sale, but I don't know the costs.

Sorry, YT organizes comments funny. Yes, that is the forest Fw190 which was meticulously restored and has joined the Flying Heritage Collection. Look for videos of the two flying displays that have been performed so far.

If you were as old as this engine, you'd be pretty worn out too. Imagine how often this plane flew during the war.

@FiveCentsPlease I will do that, I think it is great to have that 190 and the 109, both combat veterans, and painted as they were when they went down (I am not sure they are both in the same collection though). I would take one of these Flug Wurk 190's though, if anyone is bored with theirs.

A German company produced a series of 12 full-scale replica kits as a lower cost warbird option for buyers, including the one above fitted with an R-2800 engine. This was increased to 21 replicas, powered by a Russian/Chinese engine. Some are flying while others are still in assembly. Original blueprints were incomplete, so there was some reverse-engineering needed. (An owner of an original told me the replica parts are hard to fit with original parts.)

Is is full-scale. There are also a few semi-scale Fw190s built by W.A.R. Aircraft Replicas.

Seems crazy that they built it to print, except the cowl and 2x speed fan which seems crazy to me.

No, this is one in a series of replica aircraft which are mostly original-looking but have replacement engines and other small changes. The original Fw190 discovered in a forest is fully restored now and has begun limited flying displays at the museum where it is permanently displayed.
