    8 hour a day workouts? How are they suppose to maintain that when they leave the show? It doesn't take a doctor to figure out that it is unsustainable.

      Um workout for an hour a day and eat less than 2000 calories a day. You don't have to continue the crazy diet and exercise but don't go back to your old diet and lifestyle. Go on a crazy diet and exercise routine then go to a sustainable one.

      kay jay when you have 150kg its not easy do make yourself do anything...look I'm great friend with croatian contestant she lost in the show 40% of her body mass....she has a job,she work out every day,she goes to a collage to become a personal trainer...some people actually goes to those shows to change their way of life,to learn how to be healthy because its not easy any of those things...ofc i also know a guy who after he lost almost 30% of body fat got back to his old weight...but you know what?..he went there just to be on tv and promote his business...there are people like him but also a people like my friend...people who goes to the show to change their life and continue to changing it....its not easy but its not even hard if you want it....in croatia that show is actually pretty big and the trainers have their version for other people who dont have to lose a lot of weight but wanna learn to be healthy...and in less than 2 years of which this show is in croatia,Croatia fell from being on top of Europe for over-weight people...now we are in middle...its more than a show

      Eating clean burns off fat with sweat. The show tries to make em lose fat ASAP. But this fucks then up in the long run. That's why I never watched the show :3

      ikr, Im sorta chubbу and I`m working out and loosing weight now, and I work out for 1hour and a half, and im doing a lot of cardio so it leaves me tired and worn out as heck. These people are much heavier than me, so 5-8hours a daу is probablу living hell for these people!!

    if they made a show, kinda like a documentary, with three people needing to loose weight, proper diet plans and exercise, filmed it over a year or two. I would watch the shit out of that!

      There's Chris Powell's show Extreme Weightloss (or something like that). And he works with people one-on-one over a year. But yeah, if it was more of a format of multiple people at once that would be cool

      Putting words in my mouth. I said it takes years to gain weight meaning it takes years to loose it. Nowhere did I say that 20 years of obesity = a 20 year struggle to loose weight. The "years" I'm referring to, in context, is the morbidly obese people who have struggled with weight for a long time. I'm trying to highlight the absurdity of trying to change habits of diet and exercise (or lack thereof) overnight.
      You can easily misconstrue comments when you take it out of context to the video.

    Tell anybody you are trying to lose weight and suddenly everyone is a diet expert.
    Either they say things like 'should you be eating that?' or 'that's fattening' or they try to undermine your efforts by encouraging you to eat chocolates or cakes 'go on, one won't hurt you'.
    Best not to tell anybody. Do it your own way.

      What people SHOULD be doing, is offering to work out with you/scheduling times to do so, and work out at your pace, etc. Anything in addition to that should be, like, hey, maybe water instead of juice would be a good idea, or, hey, maybe have some more vegetables instead of more fruit (on top of eating plant foods like potatoes, bread, rice, bananas, etc. previously in the day). MAYBE is the key word with anything diet related. But exercise... We all need more friends to help us exercise more...

      BINGO. I've found this to be a consistent trigger of my Binge Eating Disorder - people would butt in with their own "advice", to the point where I get overwhelmed and binge. Now I often get panic attacks just from meal planning and grocery shopping. I'm starting to develop some ground rules, though - no discussions about my weight or eating unless I bring it up, and I can end the discussion at any time, on any grounds. I'm not going to let the meddling of others ruin my life.

      it depends, I have PCOS and hypothyroid so it is harder for me to loss weight permanently.
      I have to take maintenance meds, exercise, and eat better just to lose weight properly.
      All the while, I know some people who eat a lot of junk food and don't exercise, but don't gain weight.

      you can't fight the physics. They either eat less than you think or exercise more than you think. A body wants to put on fat where it can, nobody just burns thousands of extra calories just because.
      Also, you're talking about something else entirely. I'm just saying that they said "the body fights weight loss" and I'm saying "the body only fights weight loss if it's to the extent that it thinks is dangerous"

      Button Nose arbitrarily high metabolism is BS. Think about it from an evolutionary perspective, if I just burned twice the calories of everyone else for no good reason, I'm starving to death for sure and my genes don't get passed on. On top of that, "metabolism" in terms of metabolic rate is just the name we give to how the body's processes use calories. If calories aren't being used by the body to DO something, they aren't getting burned, it's not arbitrary.
      The reason your co-workers have trouble gaining weight is that they don't have any experience doing it and their ENTIRE life pretty much instilled habits that don't gain weight, that's what they are fighting.

      ***** No, our environment has a greater influence on us than we might assume. That's why you won't see as many obese in Europe as you would in the States (most Americans have ancestors who immigrated from Europe). Different culture, different food explains it really. Genetics should obviously not be overlooked though

      Its not all about calories. Their refrigerator is stocked with lean protein and veggies. Although it may not have alot of calories, they do have alot of nutrient to it. And that is what matters, and with all their fat, they should have enough to supply the energy.

      The "eating under 1200 calories a day will lower your metabolism" is a myth. Think of people with anorexia nervosa, who have starved and exercised too much for years on end. If they get the help they need to return to normal eating and exercise, they gain enough weight to look healthy.

    As a Trainer myself I'm disgusted by the so called trainers actions. I promote slow and steady weight loss (I lost 150lbs like this myself). As a Trainer I want to re-educate people and get them to the point where they don't need me anymore. Or at least need me less. We had our own version of the biggest loser in the UK but it only lasted 3 years I think,

    I think being a fan of this show as a child was part of the reason I decided that losing weight insanely fast was okay and safe. Later I had to overcome an eating disorder.

    As an exercise scientist we urge everyone to consult with professionals on the right ways to lose and maintain mass instead of the disgusting nature of reality TV shows like this. These shows do more damage to the community than good and put negative attention onto what exercising should be all about, improving your quality of life and achieving realistic goals.

    I can't believe people are barely finding this out. When i was 15 i knew it was "fake" and that the contestants were going to gain weight again. First of all, when they were on the show they devoted all that time to losing weight. In real life, finding an hour to exercise is already hard. When on that show, they devote all that time to lose weight. If people think it's life changing...its not

      I read years ago that the maximum amount you can lose SAFELY in a week is about 2.5 pounds. That's if your diet is perfect and you exercise enough but not too much. I think this makes sense. Even if you lost one pound per week, that would be over 50 pounds in a year.

    Of COURSE their metabolisms slowed as they lost weight. Metabolic requirements are based on your overall size. If you're smaller, you require fewer calories. It's why so many people plateau in their weight loss.
    Metabolic 'damage' from extreme starvation is temporary, and doesn't tilt the scales more than a couple hundred calories.
    The Biggest Loser people gain their weight back for the same reason that most crash dieters gain it back. They're doing a temporary 'quick fix' instead of changing their habits permanently. Go back to your old habits, go back to your old size. It's very simple.

      If you lose weight fast your body starts turning off ways to burn calories. It can take 6 months to a year for your body to 'trust' you again and switch everything back on if your weight loss was extreme.

    I have refused to watch this show. It is in no way possible to work a job 40 hrs a week, plus work out for 5-8 hrs every day. That is neither practical, nor healthy. The sadistic treatment by the "trainers" is nothing but bullying and abuse. If anyone screamed and cursed at me like that, I would have force fed them one of the weights. I have been waiting for years to hear about someone dropping dead from sudden cardiac arrest.

    Slow and steady for weight loss, we are constantly bombarded with "loose 7lb in a week!" Type diets
    I've managed to lose 1.5 stone in 6 weeks, I work out 4 times a week and I halved my sugar intake

      Exactly, the fastest shortcut its not always the right one. I think losing weight fast is HUGE mistake, you get excess skin, high risk of winning your weight back and your body has a hard time getting used to it.

    Of course it's hell for the contestants body and mind. It's drama we want and we see the contestants struggling.
    If we really would want them to lose weight, we wouldn't show obese people on TV, like caged animals for our amusement.
    What I would really like to see on TV, is a show that portrays a healthy lifestyle. You know, how to cook healthy meals, have a balanced lifestyle, cardio and strength training advice.
    Obesity has become an illness that is not only for the rich. It is a killer. I don't see why goverments around the globe have any problems to fight it.

      A lot of the time also obesity is linked to poverty too. High quality healthy food tends to cost more and therefore cant be afforded as often by poor folks. But mcdonalds? cheap. KFC and microwaveable meals? cheap. thats how such companies make such a profit, by aiding the obesity crisis. And this fatty salty food also being hugely addictive makes the consumers keep coming back for more. Then the children get taken to these same places and it becomes a cycle. Companies know this fact and their role and do nothing to change it. The government knows this too but its representatives only care about the money they get from those same corporations lobbying them behind closed doors. Obesity isn't a problem for these groups, it's a blessing. Like its a blessing for biggest loser, to make lots of cold hard cash off people's suffering.

      Its true. Its all true what you are saying...
      I think food should be cheaper. I know it is possible to eat healthy on a very tight budget. But you have to sacrifice organic/grass-fed meats, etc. Because of this, poorer folks have all the more conventional meat/produce, etc., and so, are more likely to have health issues later on... This one area makes me FURIOUS, LIVID. Honestly, if this is some kind of government conspiracy, I hope that most people in the government, the folks behind this crap, burn in hell for eternity...
      I have some videos on my channel regarding cheapest produce, etc. I suppose milk, eggs, turkey and chicken, along with canned tuna, cod, etc., help poorer folks tremendously, with getting the nutrients they need from animal foods + the sense of being full/not hungry, etc. But yeah, those fast food places, they are like magnets for the poor... Disgustingly amoral world we live in sometimes... :(

    They should have a class action lawsuit. These people trusted the show to do good and they will suffer now the rest of their life. Their bodies were traumatized just as if they were in some disaster, and had to survive in a starvation mode.

    I have been a big girl for years and it has always been hard for me to lose weight. And I would watch this show and think what am I doing wrong, they lose weight so fast. So to hear this make me mad and not so bad about myself. I now am a pescitarian and my sugars are at there best. Yeah I am still a big girl, but a healthier big girl :)

    Two things:
    One- I always felt this show was really suspicious. It goes against everything trainers and dietitians suggest for healthy living and weight loss.
    Two- Some of the comments here are just plain awful. Did you not watch the video? This goes past "keeping up the program" and such after the show this was extremely detrimental to their health.

    This show definitely doesn't use the healthiest way to lose weight. Your body shouldn't be exercising 8 hrs a day. And giving you little food.

      depends on your goals ie: 40 mins of weight lifting targeting specific muscle groups on different days mixed in with cardio. Also, days off to recover during the week as well. Comprende Slappy?

    You forgot to mention their diet was wrong. Bob and Julian are NOT nutritionist! They are only personal trainers. They had those people on a low calorie akins style diet high in animal protein. That is not what the Science shows as a healthy diet. They really should have had a nutritionist on that show to promote a whole food plant based diet that the contestants can live with.

      Fat people just aren't treated by society in general like they're human.
      They're either a complete joke, there to be the comedic fodder and punchline or demonised as grotesque, lazy and unintelligent. Notice how so many insults used against fat people consciously dehumanise them? fat cow, whale, fat pig etc. Because society only considers people worthy of the human treatment of dignity, love and respect if they meet beauty ideals- a major one being that people are thin. Being fat doesn't make you a bad person, and if you ARE overweight you probably already have deep seated emotional issues that have made you overeat. I say this from experience, being someone who was once quite fat, and is now acceptably 'thin'. The difference in how people treat me now astonishes and disgusts me compared to the nastiness people directed at me before.
      Thats why people can happily watch reality tv like the biggest loser, where trainers are screaming and verbally abusing these people who are running on treadmills at full speed for probably for the first time in their lives crying and wheezing and often VOMITING on screen and just consider it 'entertainment'. After all, they're just fat fucks amirite? society deems they deserve it.

    No idea why this is so shocking. Every few years someone does a "where are they now" story on some former contestants and they have ALWAYS gained the weight back.
    The food and diet regimen on the ranch would never ever ever work in the real world...yet the show has been on for over a decade.

    people in these comments are so harsh, these people live in an enviroment that encourages extreme weightloss, instead of going to work for 8 hours they go to the gym. Of course when you exit that environment your body will start to correct. I think its less about discipline and more just science...

    We're not just talking about people who simply got lazy after this show ended. We see this same thing when we're talking regular people not on a reality show who forcibly lose weight quickly, only to find themselves regaining it soon after. Your body is designed to survive, and when its losing weight, that is an unnatural thing. It wants to fight against that especially if you ascend into rapid weight loss which is views as starvation. It's a survival mechanism to actually keep us alive as long as possible, which is why it is recommended that you go slow and burn weight slowly to avoid running into major problems which these people will. I mean, what normal human being says to another human being that after this show they should be able to keep working out 5-8 hours a day even though they have a job, kids, a life, etc. How is anyone expected to maintain that level of working out?!? This show severely seeks to discredit real doctors and real trainers who have a vested interest in their clients and patients health and not trying to fill their pockets with money no matter the cost to the people involved.

    Average "week" on the show is actually from 2.5 and 3.5 weeks. Never less. This is why contestants can lose so much weight every single "week."
    During early seasons, contestants would "dehydrate" themselves while on bicycle, hours on end, putting plastic or rain coat over their entire body while cycling hours.
    Contestants said they would eat less than 800 calories/day. Heard some were given "baby food."
    There was a huge amount of dehumanization on the show.

      someone in season 15 lost 38 pounds in the first week, which is nowhere near healthy for ANYONE no matter how heavy you are.

    I really hate this show, always have from the very first episode. Sometime during season 2 or 3 one of my friends convinced me to try it again. I will never let anyone try to convince me into giving it another chance. I just can't see how attacking a person because of their weight is "heart warming" to my friends and family. I'd like to see a weight loss show that's kind of like super nanny for food, educating and demonstrating how to eat better. They can go grocery shopping together to teach contestants what's good and bad to buy. Then they can cook with them to not only teach them how to cook healthy, but that heathy food can be delicious and filling.

      Soo accurate! It starts w/ knowing all the facts and building a lifestyle upon effective and safe methods. These people (those so called trainers) are trying to undo what the body has been doing for years in a matter of months to meet extreme goals.
      Its horrifying and disheartening to see that amount of suffering amount to more pain. People want to be healthy ( I see it all the time with friends and family) we should be helping our communities not feeding them that "biggest loser" nonsense.

    It is our duty to gain our own knowledge on food, exercise, water, sugar, soda, junk food, processed food etc...once I watched a few food documentary films; only then I was able to make wiser food choices and lose weight. I believe in the saying "knowledge is power"...It is 80% diet and 20% exercise. I believe all these contestants gained back their weight bc they went back t their old eating habits. If you stick to healthy "live food" eating; you will not gain weight. It is that simple.

      you're wrong but sorta right. To repair the metabolism/endocrine system you must eat 2000+ calories that are nutrient dense every day, sleep a lot, have good activity levels. Muscle has nothing to do with the endocrine system but muscle burns 14 calories vs. fat burning 3 calories.

      CelestialSweet nutrient dense meaning fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds. Potatoes have a decent amount of calories, 163 for an average sized potato. That doesn't count for the toppings you would use on it for a baked potato or fries. Bananas are nutrient and calorie dense, so are pineapples, chia seeds, flax seeds, rice, dates are also calorie dense per serving. All of the foods I have listed are carbohydrate dense food, meaning you'll definitely have energy to get through the day. The seeds are high in omega-3 fat and carbs. I eat 2300 calories everyday on a vegan diet, it's not hard

    I agree that the show is a train wreck and the trainers are charlatans, but anyone who drops hundreds of pounds will experience slowing of their metabolism. An overweight body burns way more calories than a normal weight body.

      this is very accurate.
      I also believe some of the reason many of the contestants regains their weight is because the show doesn't put enough emphasize on how to eat and such, they are constantly being guided trough The Biggest Loser, but have very little knowledge of what to do when they actually get back to the "real world"

Same thing tend to happen with Military people who have had a hard service, come home, want to relax, suddenly the days slow down and aren't as high intensity.

      It's "accurate" but you're missing a few key points. What you don't understand is that their RMR dropped way, way below what a person of the same size would have. Because of the damage that this rapid weight loss did to their bodies, some contestants would have to eat less than 800 calories a day in order to not gain weight. They would literally have to stay at that calorie limit for weeks until they could gradually build back up to a healthy calorie level. There's nothing healthy about losing 13, 22, or 31 pounds in a "week."

    I was given caffeine pills illegally by a nurse at a group home/boarding school. We had three-a-day athletics which all in all was about five hours a day of work outs since we only went to school from 9-2 including lunch. I lost a startling amount of weight and had a seizure in Geography class. These weight loss tactics are NOT GOOD. I'm glad someone exposed the show.

    It is all about a lifestyle change. What are these former contestants doing now? Are they healthy and keeping the weight off? Folks you don't have to go on TV to lose weight, it is a personal issue that you alone can decide. I never cared for the show's approach, these trainers treat these contestants as if they need to be punished for their 'fat' acts of life. Climb these stairs until you puke is not motivating to me!

      Exactly. Like even just walking for 30 minutes-1 hour a day should be good exercise to start off. It doesn't have to be intense from the beginning. Just like when you're learning a new skill, you start off small. Like when I was learning back handsprings like 5-6 years ago, they started off with a heavy heavy spot and gradually once I got the rhythm, I started to get better and better. And then eventually I was able to do it by myself.
      And also diet is important. Like start off by cutting back on the amount of food someone eats in a day and start drinking more water to stop mask thirst. I know that thirst can mask itself as hunger. Like cut back less and less. That way your body gets used to it and you don't miss some stuff as much.

      You're right, diet (what people eat) is very important. One of the reasons some people eat too much is their bodies are trying to get the necessary nutrients, but the nutrients aren't in the food (not in the soil, not added with fertilizer = plants/animals don't have them). So eating even less food and getting even fewer nutrients isn't much of an answer. People must supplement properly, then food consumption can be reduced without bad results. They won't be hungry and their bodies will be getting all the nutrition needed.

    I remember being shocked when the study came out years ago that the damage to your metabolism from severe calorie restriction and extreme exercise is permanent. One former contestant was on 600-700 calories a day with 2/3 hour workouts to maintain the weight loss.

    You can only gain 100-150 lbs if you are eating a large amount of food after the show. Your metabolism may slow down but you cant gain 100lbs when you are eating healthy and i mean healthy. People are overweight for a reason and that reason has to be dealt with but dont blame the show. It may have been awful but they taught you how to eat and exercise. The rest is up to you.

      I don't think you understand how metabolism works. You can eat perfectly healthy food but if you have a super slow metabolism then you simply won't burn off the fat you get from it (and all food gives you fat you need it) without unrealistic workouts.

      Eating 800 calories a day and working out 5-8 hours is not sustainable. I use to eat under 800 calories to try lose weight and as soon as I went back to eating a healthy amount of calories (2000-2500) I gained weight like crazy and ended up putting on 10kg. Luckily I found a hclf vegan lifestyle and have lost that 10kg and I'm slowly losing the weight I wanted to lose in the first place. Eating 800 calories a day is starvation and damaging to the body. The human body requires 1800-2500 calories a day.

    I would LOVE a Biggest Loser type show where they pitted people on a low carb starvation diet to people on a EAT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT LOW FAT WHOLE FOOD VEGAN DIET. I can already tell you how it would work out....LOW FAT HIGH CARB VEGANS WILL WIN EVERYTIME :)

      yes! low carb starvation diets have proved time and time again that they only put the person through metabolic damage and further health problems even with exercise 4-8 hours a day... meanwhile many scientific studies and legitimate health books from nutritionists and professors from every field of science and nutrition have proved that whole food high carb vegan diets HELP the body even with little exercise (3 times a week)... yet no one listens or even knows about that. why? because of the stifling oppression of the meat and dairy industries for one, ugh.

    This is why you take things slowly. The body isn't just gonna cope with instant weight loss, you gotta make your body get used to exercising or atleast some weight losing activities before doing it in extreme instances.

    Your training effect also slows down after weight loss. That means you have to run longer to burn the same amount of cals.

    I eat cheese and eggs and lost 70lbs. No pills - just slow and steady over two years - lots of fiber, no sugar, and doing housework manually instead of "labor saving" devices.

    Thing is, you can show people a science report demonstrating clear evidence that metabolism gets screwed up (perhaps for years or permanently) due to this kind of extremely rapid and unsafe weight loss... and idiots will still blame the overweight person for not having willpower. It's biochemistry, not will power, once someone gets on this yo-yo train of weight loss. Metabolism gets dramatically ramped down, meaning that these people can still be eating healthy, low calorie, and training but they'll still gain weight. Most rapid-loss dieters will regain, sometimes more than they started with, because their biochemistry is fighting against them. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to go very slowly: no more than 1-2 pounds lost per week. Otherwise, your body thinks it's starving... biochemistry stacks the deck against any amount of will power.

    I had gastric bypass surgery about 8 years ago and I have kept the weight off. A lot of people that I know who also have had it done. Have gained it back or developed other habits to replace eating.

    This show always left me entirely 'cold'. Weight gain and loss is such a complicated thing and needs to deal with a person's entire make-up as a living being. I'm a bit overweight after retiring, also have had asthma my whole life. There is no way for the average person to attempt this kind of 'crash course' without ill effects. We're a 'pumped up' society and we need to find ways to dispel that kind of energy that isn't self-abusive. These shows certainly show places for self-abuse.

    And the biggest reason why it fails is because the 'eat less and move more' philosophy we've believed for so long screws up the metabolism badly. The key to weight loss is to eat MORE and eat RIGHT. 'Calories in vs Calories out' doesn't take into account blood sugar, hormones and especially insulin. Controlling your insulin levels is the key to weight loss. Low carbohydrate and high fat will ultimately help you lose weight quickly, safely and healthily. And Gillian Michaels has the gall to go on TV and criticize the ketogenic diet that has done exactly that for people without caloric deprivation and 5-8 hours in the gym. Shame on her. I have lost 50lbs in 6 months without ANY exercise by cutting out processed carbs, sugar and inflammatory foods like wheat, grains, pasta and alcohol. I feel better than I ever have and didn't have to kill myself or starve myself to do it either.

      Same here...intermittent fasting following Dr. Berg and T. Delauers. with p90x3 (just 3 times per week) . I just did not give up my red wine and Italian pasta on sundays :)....still losing 500 grms per week!...

    I'm living a very sedentary life because i'm a freelancer who works from home, i don't even need to go out to do the groceries, taxes, etc since its all done online.
    Still, i've been able to lose weight by just limiting my (kilo)calories intake to 1000 per day, i don't make any distinction to the kinds of calories or foods i eat, i just check the weight of what i'm going to eat and count the raw calories...
    I must say it's easier that i thought, its actually going really well since i lose about 2 kilos per week, winch is fast enough to be noticeable, but not too much to be an health issue.
    I can still eat anything i want as long i cut the portions and don't go over the 1000 calories day and/or run enough that day to use those extra calories.
    I also add water to my foods and drinks whenever i can to increase the volume without increasing the calories:
    less dense soups,
    half water, half milk when eating cereals,
    fruit juices where half to 2 thirds of the volume is added water.
    anyway, it does not feel like a diet, i don't feel restricted and i'm losing weight without too much effort.
    p.s. weight yourself in in the morning after you went to the toilet (the fat your body uses is converted into co2 and water) and before breakfast (eating and drinking will clearly increase your body weight and hide some of the weight loss)

    Well I'm 53 yrs old, & I've lost 103 lbs. It took me 3 yrs 2 do it. Slow & steady is the pace 4 me, cos I can monitor my weight better.

    I stopped watching after the girl who won that season was severely underweight. She looked very unhealthy. They don't care about peoples health

      Exactly. Permanent changes come only from behavior modification. The show did not advocate for that or provide aftercare for the contestants. So, it IS their fault as well.

    Small changes over long periods. As someone who has gone up and down a few times and gone back down from a high of 290 to a current 220 over the past 2-3 years really only on diet, supplementation and properly managed hormones (I am now on testosterone replacement therapy, something more men than you might think are currently in need of). Something as simple as changing from 2% milk to 1%, changing from a normal cereal to oatmeal (which contains more fiber) and most importantly for me: cutting out as many PROCESSED FOODS as possible! I now refuse to eat fast food, anything instant or heavily processed like mac&cheese or most anything in the grocery store that is prepared. Another thing I have found is that if you properly supplement and know how to make a protein shake the right way (once again, oats but this time ground down to a powder in a coffee grinder for use as carbs in the shake prior to workout with an insulin mimetic to bring down blood sugar prior to the shake to shuttle the best calories into the muscles when they need it the most). Of course, this Rx doesn’t work for everyone and educating yourself constantly is one of those lifestyle changes that are most important. My freshman year of college I took a nutrition course as a biosci elective and I wish it was a course that was a requisite in HIGH SCHOOL, then again in COLLEGE, as it transformed my understanding of how to feed myself properly. I would recommend it for anyone, hell; even for both parents to take together to know what is happening to their family nutritionally as it affects EVERYTHING!! Just my 2c, good luck everyone; it’s a never-ending battle but so rewarding when you succeed!!

    Its funny how some of you here feel bad for those contestants when most of them are skinny and healthy aswell atm.
    dont focus on the negative aspects because although some of them may have suffered and gained nothing but most of them now are much happier.
    I dont need to tell all how bad it is to be *owerweight* in america and the people that are bitching and moaning about side effect, which is lame since they went into that show willingly and they must have known that loosing all that weight in such a short period of time will do harm to their body but of course now they are blaming the show not themselves... typical human behavior.

    I followed this show's extreme diet and exercise regimen when I was a teenager, and I wound up stunting my growth and ruining my metabolism. And there's nothing I can do about it. It's a life sentence.

    my max was two hours a day to workout. And that was when I was taking PE in HS as well as working out after school. I took me four years to go from 175 to 135, and now I'm at 210 since I am no longer able to afford a gym membership. Tiny living doesn't help.

    For the first point -- if you lose weight, your metabolism slows down. Larger people have a faster metabolism because they need more energy to maintain size.

    If I lose weight my boobs get smaller n ppl tell me I need to gain weight, but if I gain weight my boobs get bigger and people tell me I need to lose weight. So now its like, bbw all the way. I would rather have curves then b a twig n e ways lol.

      It is really all about discipline. Not finding time to exercise? Even just 30 minutes a day would do much. There are contestants who have successfully kept weight off even after years from the show. So it is all about the decision to stick to a regimen, as you said--keeping a pattern of exercise, good nutrition and all that. Many of the contestants though simply went back to the same lifestyle they were used to, and then saw their weight go back.

    i was 334 pounds x-mas of 2015. im now 275 pounds and its 3.2.2017. lossing weight slowly sucks but loose skin wont be much of a problem. plus now i bench 315 incline and 365 flat and can preacher curl a 75 bls dumbbell. slow and steady wins the race. never give up its a lifestyle change your looking for not a deit.

    This is why I liked that show where the contestants were set up with programs in their own homes and life and were followed for a year instead of a few weeks. I don't think it's still on but I've seen the trainer and his wife in a few magazines.

    I am a WW Leader and have lost 80 pounds and kept it off for years. I know 100's of people that have lost large amounts of weight and kept it off. BUT it must be done right. Any more than 1-2 lbs a weeks results in too much muscle loss. Muscle helps burn fat. When you lose too fast like the contestants, they lose too much of their muscle mass and therefor can not burn the fat/calories like they used to. This results in what we call a slow metabolism. Weight loss is easy when you eat healthy food that makes you feel good, make small changes to your lifestyle over time, keep a positive attitude and DON'T QUIT! You can do it!!!!! Be patient. It's worth it.oxoxoxoxo

    I would like to point out that 2 pounds a week weight loss is NOT efficient for a heavily obese person. Because they have more mass, just by eating and exercising right, they can lose a lot more per week HEALTHILY

      It depends on how you define "heavily obese". If someone is 200 pounds overweight, then of course the initial losses would be large. But even in that case the large weekly losses can't be sustained SAFELY for very long.

    People seem to completely forget about the fact our bodies have natural instincts, we can't just make it the way we work.
    If you're an obese women, doing hardcore exercises 4 hours a day, only eating 1500 calories a day, you will binge.
    Why?
    Because you're body is gonna need to obtain all the nutrients and calories you lacked back in your death diet.
    common sense.
    When I went vegan I lost 15 pounds (no exercise) then with exercise I lost another 15. I am now 120 lbs and I've been like this for almost 8 months.
    No starvation, no tears, no over exercising!

    The study showing metabolic suppression is sketchy, they supposedly made up a new BMR formula rather than using either Katch-Mcardle or Mifflin-StJeor and the new contrived equation overpredicts BMR in everyone.
