- Woodturning - A piece of spalted beech trunk provided the blank for this hollow form. A fun woodturning project and good for beginning hollowers who don't want to hollow through too small a hole.
Range of hollowing tools used to make this hollow form - Woodfast Pro-Master, Crown Midi Revolution with cutter head and scraper head, and Simon Hope 6mm carbide tool.

Since I started making these videos in 2017, I have been lucky enough to receive the support of some manufacturers with materials to use in my videos. A beautiful shape needs no extra colour but no colouring can improve a bad shape. This one is just lovely as is.

Wonderful your cluttered shop. Small and full of beloved tools and machines. With you you can see that something is emerging that creativity is more important to you than a shop in which it looks like an operating theater or a hardware store. Please don't panic about no colour involved. I have done some research and it's a condition call absentiuscolourdisorder and is a temporary condition that does go away on its own without the need for any medical intervention.

Great shape. If you liked the Woodcut Proforme or Promaster, Try the Woodcut Flexi designed for smaller forms and Small openings. It cuts like a beast also. Perfect for Forms and vases

Looks great, Stewart, with the shape and grain. I'm glad you pinned the comment about no color because I was concerned when you first started. I always assumed that if anyone in your family moved too slow or was stationary, they would wind up spray painted but now I see that it's probably no true (I said probably). Take care.

Beautiful form. Yes they are great fun to turn. I love turning hollow forms but I've not tried anything that big, lack of suitable blanks being the reason.🙂

Youz always worried about cracks. Az n English teacher, (innit? ), you should know that Cracks is short for CHARACTER. So give it a chance and just love it, or else in a few years when yours begin to show, the firewood might come and getcha. Be warned.

Well, I guess I am going off nicely shaped brown turned objects, for once I think some colour was called for.
You are right you have to try different shapes and techniques, think of the additional pleasure you will get from having a different shape to colour.
So are you now in the market for a Simon Hope Hollowing Rig, my friend Pierre swears by his and not at it.
Haha....at least it doesn't look like a loo seat! In point of fact, only this week, I finally took my Simon Hope hollowing rig out of its box, nearly two years after buying it!!!
To answer your first question, my wife. She does not care about new chuck jaws, or even new chucks.
The vase, the shapes the thing. Getting the three dimensional shape to work in every direction is tough. It's easy to start chasing curves this way and that and end up with a total mess that fails in all four of the three dimensions. I'm at liberty to say how I know that. You've done a fine job with this one. If you would like to try some inspiration from the flat woodworking world take a look at the By Hand and Eye web site www.byhandandeye.com/ George and Jim think, and write, a lot about form.
Then she must be the only person in the whole world this applies to! Thanks for the link - will check it out....and will probably do some more hollering.....

Thanks 👍 They are shark jaws from Vicmarc....a bit like the piranha ones from Axminster. I guess the length is to securely chuck larger bits of wood than this one! One day.....

Thanks for the nice video on hollowing. It looks like this is turned in spindle-orientation, but I did not see the pith at the center of the tailstock or headstock. Can you clarify where the pith is located on the hollow form? Thanks!
Hi - thanks for commenting. The pith is just off the centre and is contained in the pot's foot.
It’s a great looking bowl. I’ve never tried hollow form, you used 4 tools to get your results, what one of the four tool would you recommend to start with?

You only need the handle if you are going deeper than about 5 inches
