@@CottonRage I’m really glad that you chose what’s best for the animal! A lot of people won’t do that, they’ll get the animal even if they know they can’t provide the best life for them. These guys deserve the absolute best.
Garters are the only snake that it's convenient not to feed rodents. That it. The rodents don't even look that bad and you can get it ground up into pellets.
I swear, one day someone came to me and said “Can you rub baby carrots on mice and feed them to snakes? Im vegan and love snakes but dont want to feed them other animals” I hope they never got a snake...
I've never met a fellow vegan/vegetarian person refusing to feed pets meat and I refuse to believe someone is that dumb I mean I believe you Just jesus christ
I just don't get pets who eat only meat, since I'm vegetarian myself. I see nothing wrong with it, I just can't imagine feeding a snake live/dead mice since I love mice too. That being said don't force your animals who are carnivores or omnivores to only eat a vegan diet. That's horrible for them....it should be obvious but for some reason, people still try to do it anyway.
Something to note about snakes that eat worms/slugs and other inverts (including crawfish, though unsure about scorpions lol) is that they're relatively easy to create colonies of as feeders yourself. Obviously some people don't want to keep pets *for* their pets-- but especially earthworms and nightcrawlers are very easy to get a breeding colony going! They're essentially composters for all your food waste :) While it can be difficult to source food for snakes that are picky/unique eaters, just getting a couple to start and raising them as breeders yourself can be much simpler. It's a project for sure, but possible with less challenging feeders!
Snakes are the perfect solution to that 'what do I do with my hands?!' feeling when making videos or giving presentations, imo. Also dat pickle rick, lel
Two of the most hardest working folks I’ve ever watched! Working on the new place....still making awesome videos for me and others to enjoy. Thank just what I need to make my evening fun!
I live around where garter snakes live. Sometimes in the summer we go out to my dad's garage and look under some wood and light metal sheets that are out by the garage and look for them, sometimes they are by the apple tree or the yard! we normally move the ones in the yard though so they don't get stepped on or hunted by our cats, I once found this TINY baby garter it was so cuteeeeee!!
They also eat Dubia roaches. Those roaches are easy to breed and can't climb the sides of tanks. I kept them for my T. When my colony started getting to big, I would give some away to a friend.
I have a bearded dragon and I refuse to buy crickets unless I have to! My baby gets dubia's, and superworms horn worms and wax worms and at times large mealworms and of course ca supplements.
I can’t get over how stinkin’ cute your DeKay’s brown snakes are! I can’t stop watching them slowly opening their tiny mouths to politely taking the food from the tongs on repeat.
@@o0Theresa0o good to know!!! I haven't dug in on research yet, so I thought a pair was the standard. Since they tend to die so suddenly I wanted an extra to ensure that nobody gets left too alone. You won't hear a single complaint from me on more sweet noodles. :3
@@nixand_brennt Maybe a pair is considered standard by some people. However, what might be 'standard' and what is ideal for the snakes are not necessarily the same thing.
A good feeder fish ive found/seen work is Convic Cichlids, specifically for elephant trunk snakes. Though they are seen as more of a pet and not feeder they can be a subsitute, they reproduce at a fast rate so availability is no problem or can produce your own. 👍🏾
I have had rodents before as pets so I bond with other them really easily. I’ve also always wanted snakes but didn’t want to have a pet that I wouldn’t be able to feed properly.
I was in the same boat as you. I had pet rats, mice, and hamsters all through middle school and high school. I finally got a snake 7 months ago, because I realized I could feed frozen thawed. Feeding rodents is a lot easier if you know they had a humane death. I buy from online rodent distributors with good reputations for treating their rodents humanely. Feeding dogs involves dead animals as well, it just doesn't look as bad since the dead animals are ground up into kibble. So really, as long as the rodent was culled humanely, it is no different from feeding a dog or a cat
@@Katie-xl8fd Yeah. My mother would never be able to have a snake, because you'd have to feed it mice or rats, but she's had a dog, and we have dogs now, and somehow she doesn't have a problem with feeding them meat, or eating meat herself. If she had to cut the pig up herself, it would probably be a different deal. Now I feed my dogs raw chicken wings, and I chop them up for them to be easier to eat. I think I could manage feeding a snake mice, or even having a colony of mice. You want pets, you have to deal with what they eat. If you want a herbivore, get a bunny, or a cow, or something.
I was in the same boat as you, but I fed F/T and they didn’t look like the pets I kept so I in theory got over it but rats still are close to my hearts
if you're really committed to getting a snake, you do become desensitized to the rodents pretty quickly. I've had two snakes for years and I love my little dudes. The dead mice and rats were pretty gross at first, and tbh I still will only hold them with tongs and get super grossed out if I accidently touch them, but I hardly think about it anymore.
something really cool is that when I was fishing with my grandpa (we always trawl fish) in BC Canada, a very large garter snake was swimming along side the boat, either for protection from large fish, or tho snag the entrails when we cleaned the fish.
They seem to rely very heavily on the egg smelling like a fresh egg so I dont think that would work sadly unless you managed to somehow scent it enough
Me: *doesn’t plan on getting a snake because my mom dosent like them.* Also me: *yes, must know how 2 care for snek even if it no eat rodent.* (Btw the grammar is bad on purpose)
Hi Emily! In fact, there is another snake species perfect for those who do not want to feed on rodents. This is Dice snake - Natrix Tessellata. I don't know if they are on sale in the United States, but I can say with confidence that this is a very common snake in Europe and Russia. It only eats fish and has interesting coloration and behavior.
This is a relief because I own pet rats, and after having these little gremlins...Man owning a snake just got way more heart wrenching, lmao. So thank you
@@salaltschul3604 The issue is that I LIKE rats, and seeing any rat dead or eaten is kinda hard for me to watch because I've now gotten attached. Even dead ones.

I totally understand, my cat catches mice and my dog rips them apart. Every time I see one my heart breaks. There’s only been 2 that were still alive. I have garters snakes and I occasionally feed them f/t pinkies and I just tell myself that they died from natural causes.
If they are talking about droppings well they don’t usually smell. If they are talking about when the snakes musk well that isn’t to bad and you can wash that off.
I wanted an egg eater when I first started looking into snakes because it just seemed so easy to feed them just eggs and then I looked into them further and was like "Yeah no that seems pretty complicated actually" haha I'm now looking forward to getting a corn snake sometime in the future :)
Thank You, Emily! I've been trying to convince my mom and dad to buy me a snake for 3 years now, my mom thinks that I am too short (her exact words, ima 4'6 I think, only ten years old) and my dad has thrown around the word corn snake, but he's terrified of rats and mice, this just makes me one step closer, my dad is eliminated, now just to grow a couple feet.
height doesn't matter, but age does. Im 14, my first snake was at 12 and I was very ignorant with my 2 corn snakes, they escaped. Havent seen them again. Because I didn't look up how to hold down the top of the enclosure. They are escape artists and get a good 5 feet.
You know, I always find it funny to see how tarantula breeders react to my experience with tarantulas. I point to species that are for experienced keepers only and say "Oh hey, this is one of the first species I started with". It always shocks them and I have to explain I interned at an insectary, that being said I still had little training and it was a lot hands on experience right then and there, hit the ground running type deal. However I do have to say this, the only reason I could comfortably, confidently, and correctly care for the more advanced species right off the bat is because of my love for animals and years of studying different species (not necessarily care, but just generally), co-workers and other people ask me about good starter pets for kids and in all honesty, I always tell them that there is no good starter pet for kids. It should be more oriented as a family pet that the kid helps to take care of. AND ALWAYS DO YOUR RESEARCH! I hate when people want to get a pet and then know nothing about that animal.

I'm in class so I will just watch this during lunch which happens right after this class. Love the video, I'm a senior in high school so I'll come back
When I first started thinking about snakes as pets, my strongest objection was having to feed them *LIVE* prey. I just didn't think I could deal with helping a snake chase a live mouse around. And I also didn't like the idea of keeping frozen dead rodents in my freezer next to the green beans.
The way the teeny tiny cutiepie opens it's mouth going after the food @7:43 had my heart literally melting!!! until I saw the next level of cuteness @08:05. I now NEED one of these!!!
In theory, you could make a mini egg using a cracked egg and agar sphereifacation for the African egg eaters (possibly even dusting the outside with calcium to mimic a shell). I never had a pet African egg eater, and don't plan on it; however, it would be an interesting experiment to see.
Never heard of the Dekays Brown Snake before, but they remind me of blind snakes though more distinctive and defined in form. Thanks for the informative video, I'm always glad to learn something new.
Ring-neck snakes are sweet. I kept the one I found for 8 years, and it was one of the sweetest things I've ever kept. It was injured to boot, so I had to nurse it back to health. But he was my little buddy for a surprisingly long time!
I had a WC ribbon snake. I would get medium sized live minnows from the bait shop and put them in his water bowl. He would chow down! So easy to take care of. I would add these to the list . A little flighty but after handling for a while he calmed down. I would recommend for a 1st time keeper that doesn't want a big snake and doesn't want to feed rodents
As far as pet snakes that don't eat rodents I think one of the best is probably Northern, Brown, or Banded Water snakes. They get to a decent size, typically calm down after having/handling them for a while, and can eat only fish and worms. The largest problem with them is finding ones that are captive bread, but I know there are at least a few breeders out there, and honestly I might get into breeding them eventually.
Thank you this video was very helpful in finding a snake my dad would let me get, I am completely fine with the rodents but the rest of my family isn't.
My mom's childhood best friend had a pet garter snake. The snake was the only reason that my mom isn't terrified of snakes, haha. Just wanted to mention that.
But the little Dekays are so cute with their little tiny bodies and big round eyes!!!! The cuteness factor of them is overwhelming!!! I don't know if I could just watch them without wanting to hold them every 5 seconds of the day!!!
I’m so excited you made this video. I got a rough green snake from from my local pet store because garter snakes are actually illegal to sell in Washington. I’ve only had Salazar about 3 weeks but I was so excited to see the other day a poop which means he’s eating at least! I didn’t know it was such a hard snake to keep as I couldn’t find almost any information on the internet which meant I had to rely on the local pet store which luckily is very good. He’s currently in a 29 gallon but I want to upgrade him once I know he’s reliably eating. He still has a lot of hides and trees and even substrate but I want to be able to find him quickly if need be. Since I’ve already made the mistake and brought the snake into my care I will do whatever I need to to give it the best chance. Do you have any tips at all?
More and more I just want to get a couple garter snakes. Except for earthworms, all the food items she listed are things I'm buying anyway to feed to myself, too! Chicken hearts fried and seasoned are delicious!

@@joaosoares-rr5mj Although garter snakes don't NEED to eat rodents, they still WANT to. It's highly recommended that you give garter snakes rodents sometimes as a treat. That's why I've decided snakes just aren't right for me, even though I love how cute they are.
@@CottonRage I’m really glad that you chose what’s best for the animal! A lot of people won’t do that, they’ll get the animal even if they know they can’t provide the best life for them. These guys deserve the absolute best.

Title: The Best Snakes that Don't Eat Rodents
Video: Just come to terms with freezer mice. It'll be easier in the long run.
Also NEVER heat up mice in the microwave
Yep. Accept that most pet species of snakes eat rodents and get over it
Or don’t own a snake
Main reason why I'll never own a snake despite wanting one, rodents are hard to find where I am
Garters are the only snake that it's convenient not to feed rodents. That it. The rodents don't even look that bad and you can get it ground up into pellets.
I swear, one day someone came to me and said “Can you rub baby carrots on mice and feed them to snakes? Im vegan and love snakes but dont want to feed them other animals”
I hope they never got a snake...
Oh my uhh hope they never get a snake ether
I've never met a fellow vegan/vegetarian person refusing to feed pets meat and I refuse to believe someone is that dumb
I mean I believe you
Just jesus christ
@@Angela1111122222 idk any vegan feeding snakes veggies but ik a woman on tiktok who feeds her dog a vegan diet
@@helenakove2 That vegan teacher? yeah she's crazy
Not me crying over garter snakes dying after their mate dies because my grandfather just passed two months after his wife of 70 years passed 😭😭😭😭
I'm so sorry. ❤
Iam soo sorry r.i.p
Im so sorry for your loss
Something to note about snakes that eat worms/slugs and other inverts (including crawfish, though unsure about scorpions lol) is that they're relatively easy to create colonies of as feeders yourself. Obviously some people don't want to keep pets *for* their pets-- but especially earthworms and nightcrawlers are very easy to get a breeding colony going! They're essentially composters for all your food waste :)
While it can be difficult to source food for snakes that are picky/unique eaters, just getting a couple to start and raising them as breeders yourself can be much simpler. It's a project for sure, but possible with less challenging feeders!
I was literally just having a conversation with my friend about snakes that don't eat rodents, what a coincidence you just posted this!!
For some reason I was thinking “Why haven’t I seen this video before” then I found out it was uploaded today

Me: is ok with rodents
Also me: nervous about getting a beardie cuz it eats crickets...
They also eat Dubia roaches. Those roaches are easy to breed and can't climb the sides of tanks. I kept them for my T. When my colony started getting to big, I would give some away to a friend.
I also would be way cooler with rodents than crickets & no roaches would be 1000 times worse.
What i do is buy bulk crickets on ebay and then freeze them and thaw as needed
I have a bearded dragon and I refuse to buy crickets unless I have to! My baby gets dubia's, and superworms horn worms and wax worms and at times large mealworms and of course ca supplements.
Crickets can be snack tho and not a permanent source if you choose
I can’t get over how stinkin’ cute your DeKay’s brown snakes are! I can’t stop watching them slowly opening their tiny mouths to politely taking the food from the tongs on repeat.
I'm digging on Garters SO HARD right now, they're such cuties. I want a lil colony of three or four. ❤
Research suggests that 4-5 is their happy sweet spot.

@@o0Theresa0o and that's exactly why i dig in on research before making an animal purchase.

The dead mice and rats were pretty gross at first, and tbh I still will only hold them with tongs and get super grossed out if I accidently touch them, but I hardly think about it anymore.
thats my issue and i just cant do frozen thawed either. maybe one day but for now I cant do it I have a hamster as well which makes it so much harder.
Egg eating snakes: “Snakes need to eat rodents? 👁👄👁”
"Hmm," *swallows chicken egg* "that's what we're supposed to eat?"

Dekay’s brown snakes are just adorable!
something really cool is that when I was fishing with my grandpa (we always trawl fish) in BC Canada, a very large garter snake was swimming along side the boat, either for protection from large fish, or tho snag the entrails when we cleaned the fish.
For the egg eaters... would it be possible to use calcium carbonate, opn, and glucolactone with some small molds to create fillable shells?
That’s actually a pretty cool idea
It’d be awesome if it does work
They seem to rely very heavily on the egg smelling like a fresh egg so I dont think that would work sadly unless you managed to somehow scent it enough
I thought the exact same thing, but with agar sphereifacation. Definitely would like to see some experiments with a well established adult.

Feed them frozen/thawed rodents. Already dead, don't have to worry about it.
@@salaltschul3604 The issue is that I LIKE rats, and seeing any rat dead or eaten is kinda hard for me to watch because I've now gotten attached. Even dead ones.
@@salaltschul3604 my guy, I love rodent's and can't stand seeing them dead that's the issue here. Every time I look at feeder mice live or dead I think of my own pet mice and I get sick.
@@Doodle456 That's valid. I do that at my job/where I shadow just out of sheer necessity. Or videos online don't bother me for some reason? Conceptually tho, freaks me out lmao.

I totally understand, my cat catches mice and my dog rips them apart. Every time I see one my heart breaks. There’s only been 2 that were still alive. I have garters snakes and I occasionally feed them f/t pinkies and I just tell myself that they died from natural causes.

I wanted an egg eater when I first started looking into snakes because it just seemed so easy to feed them just eggs and then I looked into them further and was like "Yeah no that seems pretty complicated actually" haha
I'm now looking forward to getting a corn snake sometime in the future :)
I CAN FINALLY GET A SNAKE BOI!

Curious... has anyone tried making silicon-casted small eggs to inject raw egg yolk/whites and vitamins into for the younger egg-eaters before?
Wouldn't silicon be toxic to snakes?
How would that work though? You would need the egg to have and outer shell so it doesn't spill everywhere. Also they need calcium from the shells.
@@scottsimpson5398 silicon is inert at normal temperatures.

When I first started thinking about snakes as pets, my strongest objection was having to feed them *LIVE* prey. I just didn't think I could deal with helping a snake chase a live mouse around. And I also didn't like the idea of keeping frozen dead rodents in my freezer next to the green beans.

Caught the cutest Dekay Brownsnake recently. Cool little snail and worm eater. Max out about 9-12 inches. Just so cool.
