    At the end of this video....you make the best point, especially for fisherman who may not have the experience and expertise that you do. Using Gulp baits will at least get a bend in your rod.
    If you're fishing for food, or just fishing for fun....you made your point. Always an education with you john. Cheers.

    Enjoyed the video immensely John. So now that you have shown us blackfishing from shore, kayak, and boat it can only mean one thing. A new book!! Hope so anyway. I will actually be going blackfishing on a boat for the first time in deep water I imagine. Would I be better off using a conventional setup versus a spinning setup? I have a Tsunami 7' MH (forget the model) paired with an Abu Garcia 5500C I believe. Should that suffice in case I need to use heavier jigs? Just want to be prepared for stronger currents out there. Would certainly appreciate your thoughts on this. Thank you and keep those videos coming.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With this cold weather the fish are moving deeper and you might need heavier weight. If that's a Tsunami Classic it will be a bit light over 3 ounces.

    • @anthonygregorio2208
      @anthonygregorio2208 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Skinner Fishing It is a classic. I do have a sturdier rod. The reel is ok? Spooled with 20# braid?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing

    John, not sure how much deep reef fishing you do but it would be great if you could do a video on venting and recompressing a deep water fish with barotrauma. It's very much needed to help save these beautiful fish. While venting with a needle is better than nothing, there are 'recompression' tools like the 'SeaQualizer' and inexpensive release weights that have a much better mortality rate than venting. Here is more info...

    John Skinner not sure if you'll see this. But I was interested in purchasing your book on mastering the bucktail. I live in florida and target snook, tarpon, and reds with bucktails. I was wondering if what you've learned will translate to our fisheries down here in FL. I feel there could be some very beneficial information in there for me. Thank you in advance hope you see this comment.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first tarpon I ever hooked was on a bucktail. I've also caught snook, reds, and trout on bucktails. And those were on quick visit trips to Pine Island. Also jacks, grouper, and big mangrove snappers in KW on another visit. Bucktails work on pretty much anything willing to hit an artificial.

    John, why do you use a spinning set up for blackfish but a baitcast/conventional set up for fluke jigging?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use conventional with a flipping switch for one handed depth control when fluking. I don't need that for tog, and find the spinning setup more conducive for cranking almost on the hookset and moving the fish off the bottom quickly.

    interesting I fish gulp in a completely different fishery at the other end of the earth and some similarities firstly its not the fish slow to turn on to the bait but rather you slow to learn the bite after a while you will out fish your friend when your feel reflex tunes in secondly yo will catch more and unusual species as your bait moves more naturally and then once you get the technique then the size will rise exponentially.

    15 lb braid? In the ocean? I use 15-20 lb braid on all of my medium and light action rods here to fish freshwater in the Ohio River near Pittsburgh. I'd hate to think what would happen if you got into some Kingfish or seatrout. In the ocean we used to use nothing but 30-50 lb mono. In Tampa and Saint Petersburg, it wasn't much of any work to get into some kings, trout, or even blacktip shark, but we always used a steel leader too.
    Edit: I'm not trying to be a douche here buddy, I didn't realize that you were fishing near Long Island, so I don't really know what you'd be catching there. I think that it would be a good time working on medium tackle in that area. Fishing there and in Tampa Bay are two totally different things. I'm just not used to people saying that they're using 15 lb braid in the ocean, that's all.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The lighter braids are very strong and can handle much larger fish than traditionally expected. Mono is rarely used here, and most experienced anglers aren't going beyond 30# braid for inshore ocean fishing. You might enjoy this video of a 32-pound striper beaten in a reasonable amount of time on 8# braid. 10- and 12-pound flounder are also on this video th-cam.com/video/CAyZflPzuWI/w-d-xo.html
