Awesome Blackfish and Sea Bass Jigging in Wind And Current!

- We overcame fishing challenges from a strong New Moon current by exploring a new area sheltered from the current and wind. The new Humminbird Coastmaster chart card gave us a great rock to try which turned out to be loaded with nice Blackfish (Tautog) and Sea Bass.

That trolling motor seems to be a great investment for this type of fishing. Totally beats messing with and losing anchors. I am putting that on the list for next years season.
Hi John. Looks like fun! Toggin up here in Newport is in full swing. I caught a 24 in Cod as well in 35 feet of water. We also caught 2 pufferfish which I have never seen before. Someone caught a 19 pound tautog last week and almost beat the record of 21 lb 4 oz set in 1954. What a delicious fish to eat! Talk to you later.
I was thinking about making the 3hr drive to Newport or South Kingstown or some town like that and then covid came but hey still got good toggin in Jersey

Ah that's gotta suck but it's Florida you can fish year round without 40 degree winters like the ones here in Jersey I went over there on vacation and man were those redfish fun

Funny thing, opening day we fished niantic ct and there were plenty of the golden backed black fish, then this Sunday we went out of Norwalk in central sound and we got the golden ones there too. Maybe they are throughout the sound this year? Great video!
I found many togs with that orangeish color, and some even snow white (blackfish huh?), around RI, I got of those filmed in my videos.

@ 13:57 John checks his leader for chafing, as he said the fish tried to head to the rock. Always a good idea to check every so often, as the fish get bigger, the line may part if they chafe it enough.

The "gold" coloration on those tautog are from sitting next to a metal rig,wreck,rebar,ect...Have seen it on both the N.shore and South...
EliasV was seeing golden colored tog like that down in his way last year in some of his videos

Tried my first BF fish yesterday. North Shore by a big rocky jetty, in coming tide. I was using your jigs , with green crabs, but absolutely nothing. I don’t mind this, but the only problem I had was the jig getting constantly stuck on the rocks. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

John, why do you use a spinning reel for blackfishing as opposed to your fluke setup or a conventional?

Hi John. I am trying to start out blackfishing. I need a good starting point. I can't seem to find any large underwater rocks in my area. Are there any charts that would tell me where these big rocks are? I know I can see big rocks close to shore, but they are always exposed. Also, do you recommend a spinning rod over a baitcaster for this type of fishing?
Yes to spinning. The second rock in this video came off the Coastmaster chart.
Starting out fishing blackfish now what lb braid do you suggest and what lb fluorocarbon do you suggest

hey, I have a question, Im a mercury guy we have a 115 on our Boston whaler dauntless and triple 300 mercuries on our Boston whaler 345 conquests, We had an Evinrude at one point and It gave us nothing but trouble. Do you like your Evinrude?

I do what I did in this video - move to slower water. Maybe duck behind a point or find an eddy.

"This net is terrible!" John, I appreciate your restraint. Was you lip bleeding after biting down so hard on it? I was tog fishing Sunday as well much further west. Weatherman called for max 10MPH winds (yeah right) and we got hammered all day. 65+ fish in numerous spots, not one keeper. But we had a blast nonetheless. That spot lock Minn Kota is a game changer. Will need to get that setup next season. Thank you for always showing us the ways to improve our game!!
He had never used a rubber net before and didn't understand that the current will push it into the opening if you don't hold the mesh.

Hey John, is there a reason that you use spinning gear for Tog, and baitcasting for Fluke? It seems like the baitcasting setups would be good for Tog. Thank you.
I don't find that a left-handed baitcaster gives enough leverage because your right hand is below the reel. Spinning lets me start cranking immediately when I set the hook. FWIW, everyone I tog jig with also uses spinning.

Just had a horrible experience on a party boat fishing for blackfish out of Sheepshead bay. They provided standard bottom rigs with very heavy sinkers (like 6 to 8 oz.). Got snagged constantly while just holding the rod and waiting. Can lighter rigs be used for party boats? The current was definitely strong. I'll go out and get a couple of those John Skinner banana rigs if you think they would hold bottom.
If you're deep fast moving water, you'll need to use weights like that, and sometimes more. Those are not the conditions I'd jig in. That said - what kind and pound test line were you using? Did you feel like you needed that much weight to stay down?
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I did feel like I needed the heavy sinker. It was a fairly strong current. Plus the regulars on the boat all used heavy sinkers. I ended up using one of the boat rods because my equipment was too light. I was told I should switch to braided line on my reel due to the twisting that occurs with mono. Would love to try blackfishing again in milder conditions. I am also going to try near the jetty in Long Beach. Seems like the perfect spot!
Absolutely you should be fishing braid because it will have much less drag in the water.
I hope to target some tog more seriously this year
You gotta depends on where you are but now is the time to fish for them for fun by November the BIG BIG ones come out same in December but some people don't like to go that late in the season though its a great time of year for them
Nice video tough wind and current that day I was the guy inside of you when u made that quick stop on that Boulder we did really well there before u made that stop was meaning to get over to the other one but wind and tide made me duck tight up to beach for a while I been noticing quite a few togs with there back fins worn down and irritated have you noticed it as well fish pots?
I only had one tog like that. There are many more fish pots this year. I'm sure you've seen the commercial boat with the interesting name. BTW, Desi's head boat was on that rock the last 2 days - the one we stopped on briefly.
Yes watched that boat haul pots for a while in the cove surprised to hear the head boat was on that rock out yesterday didn't see cg on it but spent much of the day west of there thanks for sharing 👍

Braid. I don't use mono for anything except leader material.
I’ll thank you for the reply. I recently went on a charter in Brooklyn going into the harbor for blackfish. The current was very strong at times way too strong for a 1-1/2 ounce jig. What was recommended was an 8 ounce sinker with essentially a dropper line with a hook attached that is free to go up and down the line of the main hook. I was wondering if you have any better rig setup for that situation, and if you recommend more than one hook, I ended up myself jigging with a 1-1/2 ounce jig caught one keeper. High then switched to the weighted rig but instead of using the 8 ounce I use the 3 ounce and it worked decently. The only problem is that it certainly hard to feel what the fish is actually doing on the line so if you have any suggestions or any type of rig, set up for that particular situation, let me know
It would start with nothing thicker than a 15# 8-strand braid. However, there are current and depth combos that make fishing with jigs 2 ounces or less impossible, and when you're on a party boat, you don't have control over that.

I saw a previous video you made to catch I believe stripers in heavy current using a very heavy sinker that was completely round attach to a three way swivel and the buck tail attached with a shorter line that the sinker I believe. In my opinion that setup configured correctly for blackfish would work much better in the excessively heavy current and party boat/fishing charter conditions or surroundings. What’s your thoughts about this?
Also was thinking if I had my own boat same conditions I had on the party boat minus the people on board, I’d have the same issues.
Although I didn’t use 15# braid the current was still very strong. I was using 30# braid with 20# floral leader to a 1-1/2 ounce jig which I caught one keeper.
The conditions were similar to your heavy current striped content.

Is there a reason you switch to your spinning real than your baitcaster?
It's more comfortable for me. I want the rod in my right hand. I don't like lefthanded baitcasters because I don't like my hand position on those. No leverage. Everyone I fish with uses spinners for tog jigging too.
