      As a masochist I kinda enjoy being tattooed 😅 but what I think It feels like is playing that game where ur friend scrapes your skin and wont stop till u name something alphabetically till u get to Z. So depending on how long ur artist is working on the same area, hitting a bone, so on so on. the more intense the scraping gets but it helps when ur artist moves to a meatier spot and easier to relax and enjoy the pain. It gives me this kind of self❤😂 punishment but so rewarding at the same time.

    The first three hour session on my large Japanese rip piece was definitely the most painful tattoo I've ever gotten. When the artist pulled lines over the actual rip cage area it felt like all the muscles in my abdomen were contracting and a scalpel was being dragged across my skin. Excited to see it all finished with color in a month but absolutely dreading the pain again 😅

    As someone who went on a 10hr session, this was how my mindset went:
    1-2hrs: I missed this pain. Am I a masochist?
    3-5hrs: getting uncomfortable
    6-8hrs: wtf did i get into. I need to finish it tho.
    9-10hrs: bro can you just fucking end it? I dont want them white lines. I dont care.

      Having had 6 spine surgeries and years and years of pain levels 5+ for over 25 years, tattoo “pain” for me is null! I have sat 5 times for sessions of 7-10 hours (all color) and had no problem. Even areas like the shins, elbow ditch, wrists, no issues for me. I do agree from watching others go through long sessions, some do start taking more breaks, or just stopping for the day as they “hit their limit” on pain.

    I know how to hand sew. Being poked by the needle or pin a fair share of times is the same feeling getting a tattoo along with some heat and vibration here and there, at least for me. Many torn ligaments & sprains, I have high pain tolerance. Major appendectomy surgery about 3 years ago was more painful than getting the tattoo on the top of my right foot. Would have to agree 100% every1's pain tolerance is different.

    I have a blackout sleeve and a black and grey sleeve.
    To put it simply, the black and grey was a 2 - 7 on a pain scale, The longer the duration of the tattoo, the higher on the scale it went.
    The blackout was a constant 6 with frequent spikes to 8-10 depending on location e.g elbow, elbow dip ( I don't know what to call it) and wrist.
    For the black and grey I would describe the pain as dragging your fingernail along your skin, the harder you press equates to the longer the session.
    For the blackout the only way I can describe it is "hot buzzing" which progressively gets hotter the longer you stay in that area, it's really not a fun experience to be truthful.
    The key for any tattoo is to take frequent breaks and use numbing spray/cream where available (doesn't help fully but takes the edge off the pain)
    The outcome of a tattoo far outweighs the pain.

    Pausing to describe the pain to me: It feels like being scratched by a cat over and over and in the same spot multiple times. I think pain tolerance is a really important part of this. Does it hurt? Of course it does. How bad? In my opinion, with a small rib tattoo, a tattoo on my lower forearm, and tattooed eyeliner, it's not that bad. Some parts of it are worse than others. I also have a lot of piercings, and I would say it's a completely different pain. Tattoos hurt more during the process itself (and I would say still not that bad) but piercings are worse after, and during the healing process. I also wanted to add that your point about experience with pain is correct, but remember that anyone who menstruates is dealing with pretty extreme pain on a regular basis. That's why (and this is documented and true) women do better on average than men when they get tattoos. I would assume that an adult woman who's menstruated for 5+ years would do better with a tattoo than a man who has broken a bone.

    I have a full sleeve on my right arm. The only parts that were painful were the elbow and inside of my bicep. My artist is very chatty and talks nonstop so that definitely helps take my mind off of it. 😂 In the end you get an awesome piece of art on your body so it’s definitely worth it!!

    First and recent tattoo was on my forearm. In a way, it's kind of feels like being tickled by someone with slightly sharp and pointy fingernails. And that's just doing the line work. I also had white colouring done, so it feels similar to an itch scratching the same spot on your skin multiple times. Overall, it was pretty manageable. The experience and artist was so amazing, I almost fell asleep. It really depends on where you're getting it done, the design, and if the artist is more soft or hard handed (meaning how much pressure they're putting the needle on your skin surface)

    Hey Mark, i had my first tattoo Just 1 day ago and i thank you for all your videos and tips about tattoos. I got a pack of wolfes on my intern right forearm and i think It was the most painful thing of my 20 years Life. The session was long 3 hours and 30 minutes. The most painful spots were the wrist and the upper part of the forearm... They hurt so bad. Since you don't know what a cat scratch feels like i would describe the pain like the tip of a fish bait that constantly goes in and out.
    P.S. Sorry if there are some grammatical errors but english isn't my firt language.

    Definitely depends on the artist. The topic of light handed vs heavy handed really resonated with me. My first few tattoos were bold black with a more old school heavy handed tattoo artist. At that time I thought it just felt like someone was drawing on me but pushing fairly hard. As the tattoo went on it felt like drawing on a sunburn. The wiping gets me more than the actual tattooing. I got my ribs done with a different artist and expected it to hurt a lot based on what I had heard, but this artist had a much lighter hand and it really wasn’t that bad. The whites at the end kind of sucked, but the main part was easy.

  • @ArtisanAlli
    @ArtisanAlli 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I've had my upper back, sternum and left arm done so far...
    linework feels like a hot, vibrating knife - across fatty areas are mostly fine, but when it passes over tendons and muscles it's almost like nerves connected with make you feel pain in other areas you are not getting tattoed on (like maybe your inner elbow is being tattooed but you feel a nerve cramp/pain in your armpit). when it runs over bone it feels the worst, you feel like it must be cutting right up to the bone and the vibrations run through your other bones a bit too - getting tattooed along my spine was felt up into the base of my head. When you're younger it hurts less.
    Color feels like if you had a scratch or burn and you just keep scratching it, raw, passed the point of raw even - color or I assume blackout too is a test of will when you have to go for hours. it too will give me that connected nerve feeling in other parts of my body, over tender areas like the back of the arm and inner elbow I considered to be the most painful
    Black and gray shading is the nicest feeling imo - lighter and more frequent scratches, but they are spread out, applied quickly and there is less 'revisiting' to the areas to make them feel raw

    Just went through my first tattoo at 35. Full shoulder blade, so about half on muscle and half on bone. Lining felt like a scalpel. 100%. Summoned images of someone cutting the design out of my skin. Shading felt like scratching a sunburn. Color felt like shading, but deeper. Easy to sit through, but it 100% changes your breathing patterns.

    I only ever had 1 tattoo on the top of my foot. The pain was so bad I never got another tattoo and waited 15 years to have it reworked. When I got the rework I expanded it up my leg and used numbing cream just on the top of my foot. I would describe the sensation as someone taking a needle and slowly dragging it across your skin with the vibrations feeling like its skipping along, adding to the pain. It didnt seem different moving from the foot to the ankle then the shin/side of the leg, it just seemed to get less intense. As if they just weren't sticking the needle as deep.

    I have pretty much my entire left arm tattooed, started with the wrist and then moved up to the shoulder. Still have some spots left, but to me the most painful areas were the wrist and the outer forearm. How I would describe the pain? To me, I would say a combination of vibrations and intense heat. But, to be honest, and after a couple of hours I get used to that feeling, and that is why I personally like longer sessions.
    Btw, to me the aftercare is way more painful that the tattoo itself lol

    I would explain tattoo pain as a razor blade being dragged across the skin. Some parts very shallow, other parts like a deep cut, but it's being done very slowly. That's exactly how it feels for me (coming from an ex-sh'r). I have a heavy black & grey "traditional Japanese dragon" sleeve that covers literally every millimeter of my arm, wrist to shoulder / shoulderblade, and the only parts that felt like absolutely Hell were the elbow ditch, a piece of the collar bone and very close to the armpit (also depends on how much shading you get done, I, for example have pure blacks in those areas which was awful, lol). And then the elbow also kinda hurt, but it just burned really bad.

    I have a full sleeve on the left arm and recently I had a 3 hours session around my wrist and hand done . I can say that it hurt more than all the hours together I had done for my arm sleeve together .
    But the Tattoo artist told me that wrist and hand hurt much because of there is nothing else than thin skin and nerves and bones . After that session was done she did just a lil bit of shading on my arm again and I can tell that compared to the wrist pain it was feeling like a light massage treatment 😂

    To me tattoo pain is a sharp pain, like being scratched by a cat or cut by a knife. But the intensity can vary a lot from one day to another and within the same tattoo session. Not trying to deter anyone, even at its more intense it is bearable if you know how to keep yourself calm despite pain. And far from the worst pain I have felt, but can still be somewhat intense.

    I have a wrist piece, a forearm piece and I’m about to get a chest piece done. The wrist was very tingly and searing hot in places… forearm piece was just a small tickle to a small sensitive area by the wrist… I’m not looking forward to the collarbone area when I have my chest piece done…

    I'd describe it like someone using a jagged piece of glass and scraping it over and over in the same spot. Strangely, the tatt I have on my lower left calf barely hurt. My most recent tatt hurt a lot but not so much because of the tatt itself but from staying in the same position for so long. By the 5th and 6th hour my arm was very heavy and sore. We took breaks and eventually, I changed positions which ended up helping a lot. In the past, I used meditation to distract myself from the pain. Most recently I focused on the music at the tattoo studio, classic rock from the 60s-80s. It was great! After we took a break for lunch they changed the playlist to current pop shite and I had to ask them if they could change it back to the original playlist, I wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes with bubblegum pop music! Fortunately, they complied. It ended up being a 7 hour sitting and I was exhausted afterwards. I have a chronic pain condition and compared to the pain I experience every day, tattoos are a cakewalk- if you can find something else to focus on it's easy to put up with the pain factor. But laying in the same position with my arm outstretched (had my lower inside forearm done) for 6 hours- was extremely painful, I should have changed positions earlier or mixed it up a bit.

    • @legoqueen2445
      @legoqueen2445 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just wanted to add, I have sensory issues and the lighting in the studio was horrible! All bright, white fluroscents and everything in the store was white reflective plastic looking materials- I kept my eyes closed the whole time and just focused on the music. It was also school holidays and the studio was in a shopping centre, so there was so much noise, especially kids. I'm glad I was able to focus on the music otherwise I wouldn't have been able to last very long. But I was well and truly spent at the end of it and for the first time in my life I think this will be my last tatt, I have 7 placed in different spots, but the experience this time around has put me off getting anymore. But I absolutely love my tattoo!

    I've found that the machine used by the artist can have an effect....I find the cordless machines are heavier and you can definitely feel the difference between those and the corded machines. Also I suppose it might depend a lot on the artists actual technique. I use two different artists as I love the contrast between the two styles, but one is definitely more 'heavy handed' than the other, but that I suppose is just the way it works.
    An interesting topic is possibly the POST tattoo pain.....the few days afterwards when you're having to wash, moisturise carefully because everything's REALLY tender.
    The most painful tattoo experience I've had has been the post process of getting my calves tattooed, when you stand up after a while sitting or laying down, and the blood tries to rush down through your constricted skin.....omg!!!

    • @EvolveINK
      @EvolveINK  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So there is some truth to that. Some ink pigments are known to fade or breakdown faster than others. For example yellows and reds break down faster then say a black ink. So naturally black tattoos age slower than the rest. Now with that said there are inks, tattoo machines, and more skilled artist that are making tattoos of all colors last much longer. Also a lot has to do with out you take care of your tattoos. I’ve actually made a video on this if you want to check it out? th-cam.com/video/tcJvAaLeIGY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_kYFjQ7oe_N7Hgie

I recently sat for 3 days back to back to back on my chest (including full saturation of both areolas(22hours overall) and had no worries. Some people would have sat for a few hours and tapped out. I am in the middle of the beginning of a right arm sleeve from shoulder to first knuckles. It's a Shin Godzilla forms 1 to 5 plus its fallen flesh, if ya know, ya know...LOL. It's also got traditional Japanese elements like one form is a Koi-type rendering. I'm getting it by John Reardon at his shop Greenpoint Tattoo Shop in Brooklyn. I've now been tattooed on almost every inch of my right arm with just the outline so far. WHICH is incredibly detailed. At this point we've done one 5 hour and one 3 hour session. We will do the hand dead last.
    The sensation to ME is like electricity. It has that vibration you speak of with just a HINT of "spark" feeling. The pain is more intense around any bones/joints. It can briefly feel really bad BUT just for short durations...BECAUSE SO FAR it's just line work. I expect the color/black work will be more challenging.
    I try to keep the pain outside my focus. When something starts to hurt I NEVER let it in to the center of my consciousness. It's just pain, not life-ending physical damage.
    Just remember that the pain is temporary and any acute discomfort like, "ARE YOU CUTTING MY ARM OFF?!?!" passes quickly. Don't let it in your head. (You can always bribe yourself with a steak dinner or something else to look forward to after your session! Then focus on that.)

    I have approximately two dozen tattoos and only one of them I would describe as unpleasantly "painful" done by a very heavy handed artist. I actually enjoy being tattooed. Yes, I haven't sat for over four hours in a session and I have an extremely high pain tolerance, but I do find pain is relative. The pain from my Chronic Lyme disease is so much worse. And with tattoos as with childbirth (not super painful for me either), you have something wonderful for that "pain". Also I have 30 piercings and only one was painful enough for me to say "ouch". Funny enough it was my first nostril piercing on the left side. The second one on my left side wasn't painful at all. Of course the healing process of a few were not a lot of fun, especially the anti-tragus.

Even my Doc Ock piece on the back of my bicep wasn't more than that but it left me more fatigued. My Spider-Gwen Piece on my inner bicep though was maybe the worst pain I've ever experienced (and I've broken my hand). The beginning stages feel like that one kid drumming with their mechanical pencil at school suffering a psychotic episode where they believe they are Michael Myers, that suddenly they get up and stab you multiple times with it, but because their power level is under 9000 it starts out as little light pokes. Move on to the 4-6 hour mark and suddenly it begins to feel like shaving with an overly used bad cheap guillete razor with little to no shaving cream on a spot that barely has any hairs and your continuing to shave despite already suffering razor burns and irritation.
    Most painful spots so far for me were in my right underarm close to the armpit as my skin was very tender and we got to about 6 straight hours. Apart from that the wrists have always felt more like actual stabbing or nails/claws being driven into the skin.

    I don't mind if someone asks me about the pain of my tattoo experiences. I do warn them that my experience may not be theirs. I have all American Traditional with solid colour packed. The artist has nearly 20 years experience in that style and is well known in my area as one of the best. He does it right. But it is variable. The last one I got hurt a bit more than the others. It was on the inner forearm and it hurt more than the other inner forearm. He told me he had used a different machine. So, body part to part, machine to machine, artist to artist...if you're tired. It all makes a difference. How would I describe the feeling on the forearm pieces I have? I found it kind of soothing. A few spots felt to me exactly how I envisioned it. A needle poking me. I wasn't surprised by the sensation and it didn't really hurt except around the old wrist and ditch areas. Maybe I would feel differently on other parts but, frankly, I don't really intend to get them elsewhere.
