Not sure why tattoos have to be 'cool', or 'cheugy', or even have meanings, If you're happy with what you have thats the important part. I feel shaming people on the tattoos they have little to no purpose. Love your take on this, can't wait for the next one! 🎂

But eventually you are going to stop being happy about your 90's tribal tramp stamp or your 2000's emo stars or your 2010s low poly deer. Because when the only value of something is that is a trend or a fad your love for it will fade as soon as the trend does. With clothing or other arts it's not a problem, you throw them and move on but tattoo artists deal with permanent trends, imagine if you could never wear anything but JNCO jeans for the rest of your life. That's why is important for artists to detect fads early and advise against them to people that doesn't know better. Don't get me wrong I know plenty of people happy with their campy old tattoos and more power to them, but I would guess laser tattoo removal clinics see a lot of fallen trends daily.

Give it 10 years and all the trendy gen z tats will look cheugy too. Frog with a cowboy hat... tiny tats scattered all over... greek statue with half the face shifted... Anything that's trendy will eventually stop being trendy. Doesn't mean you can't still like it or get it. Tattoos are permanent, but they can make for fun little time capsules.

As a tattoo artist I can confirm that in the industry we usually dislike very small "generic" tattoos and infinity symbols simply because they are (were) so popular and overdone that we're sick of doing them and looking at them. (There are trends in tattooing like there are trends in fashion and I'm not a fan of either) I personally tattoo only designs in my own style, I don't do scripts, little symbols, little silhouettes of birds etc, BUT I would never tell anyone that their tattoos are "stupid/ugly/cheugy/not cool anymore" because that's just not who I am as a person. You do you and let others get whatever tattoos they want :)
Also, bullying someone for tattoos they have - definitely not cool, unnecessary, and just shows you're a dick. It's pretty much always better to say nothing than to say something mean. To the people that created those TikToks: YOUR tattoos might be considered cheugy in 10 years. So what?

So, thankfully things have changed. I want a tattoo but because of my many fragrance, dyes, and many, many other allergies (not ER allergies but still require prescription meds sometimes), for my first I think I should stick with tiny and only black ink. I love the color ones but afraid to try for my first. I had a huge weight loss with lots of loose skin so I am limited in location, the back of my shoulder, or back, center of neck.

When I got my first tattoo, it was huge and badass and traditional style. I like it, but it's not what I truly wanted. I wanted something small and cute. But then I was afraid what other people with tattoos would think of me. I felt the need to prove to everyone that I could sit for a "real" tattoo. The older I get, the more comfortable I become with myself, the less I care about other people, and the more tattoos get, the smaller and cuter, and more colorful they become :D 🎂

These people really rubbed me the wrong way. A good part of this really felt like they were kind of afraid of connection and that was possibly why they reacted that strongly to personal tattoo's (especially the last two), and memorabilia tattoos/fan tattoos. Yeah body modification like piercings and tattoos, should be fun and for yourself. Whether they have meaning or not that is up to the person getting it, and it is no one else's business.

I agree with her point that tattoos that are in reference to movies and television are not necessarily about consumption. Like, we all connect with different types of media, and no one media type is more or less about consumption than another. If someone had a tattoo in reference to a painting, or a play, or a piece of literature, no one would connect that tattoo with hyper-consumption. To make that argument about movie references is kind of lacking a bigger perspective.

I'm 40 and I have only one small tattoo on my ankle... Really glad that I didn't get it to look cool 😅
Back in college I used to draw a lot of tattoos for my friends and other people too.
I also wanted one but wasn't sure what I was ready to commit to.
I spent half a year saying I was working on a design for myself but that it was gonna be a surprise...
I did drew something but not at all the dragon or any epic fantasy landscape that everyone was expecting!
I got a 2" smiling stickman with an oversized head, a square belly and tiny sticks legs done on my ankle
Never had so much fun seeing my friends faces and tbh, it still makes me smile even after more than 20 years 😁
So yeah, do what makes you happy cause everything is gonna get outdated at some point anyway right?

I just felt myself having this bad expression on my face when "Iheartsmosh" was talking, but instantly started smiling when you Celle came back and started talking. No hate or negativity towards "Iheartsmosh", they´re just tiktok-ing and I get it. So absolutely no hate to her. It just goes to show the difference between the two, one who thinks about clicks and trends and fitting in and all that pressure (and I understand that they, in their age are very much under that pressure that we ALL have felt in high school etc), and you Celle who are more grown and understanding, and don´t feel the need to put others down to lift yourself up. Thankyou..

Most of my tattoos are subtle references to the stories I adore from games, movies, books, etc. I personally prefer using vague symbolism to represent their themes (so, stylized skull tattoos if that's relevant, floral symbolism used in them, etc.), but there's also nothing wrong with more overt stuff ofc!
I don't see how that's playing into consumerism like the guy said. What's wrong with being touched by the stories people share? With being touched by art? I'm someone who finds my favorite stories extremely comforting, and I know most others do too! So how is it consumerism to want that to be a apart of you forever, to be something you can just glance at and instantly feel happy after doing so? it's a weird argument from him lmao.

My step mom (who is a millenial in her mid/late 30s now) recently got into tattoos because she liked mine. The few ones she got in a short span of time could easily be considered cheugy: zodiac symbols of her children, a blue flower and another zodiac symbol on her ankles, a simple bird on her back etc. She wants to get a lion as well because she's a Leo. I could easily make fun of her but why should I? If I was born when she was I'd probably like similar things, who knows if my tattoos won't be "cheugy" to younger people in 15 years. If she likes them then I'm happy for her.

Depreciating things past generations made popular is a rite of passage for any teenager. It's often how they build part of their identity. My first tattoo is based on a book that's stayed with me since I was a kid, but almost no one has any idea (I've only met one other person who's read the book). To most people, it's just a sun design with a flame in the middle.
I love my tattoos, but they're not for anyone's approval. They're all just for me. I can imagine these guys calling my book-tattoo cheugy since sun/moon was pretty trendy for a hot minute, but they don't know what they're talking about.

This seems to me just the updated version of "oh that is so 2000's" which was used as a bit derogative term if you didn't keep up with the trends changing and you were stuck in the trends of that particular period. But in all honestly I never saw that being used on something like tattoos, clothing, make up or hair styles sure, but never for tattoos. Interesting because for me, there was never a thing with any of the styles as "uncool", max not to my preference, example my friend LOVES - from my point of view - darker and moodier tattoos, usually in black only, or max mixed with red. I on the other had LOVE the look of colourfull, bright, fun looking tattoos - watercolor and such - and I say look of them, because I never had a tattoo before, I always loved how they looked, but I guess I never saw any tattooers style truly close to my heart, until now that is, getting my very first tattoo in this autumn if all goes well :) And I am soooooo excited for it, her style is exactly how I want it to be done, she is doing an original design currently for me and I cannot wait to see the end results, she is truly talented so I have 0 fear of not getting an awesome looking piece. (I don't care that watercolor is no longer viewed as "trendy" since I did not want to get a "trendy" tattoo, I wanted to get one that when I would see the first time in the mirror I would squeek from excitement, and watercolor is like that for me, I was already prepared by my friend who has multiple tattoos what to expect in terms of maintenance so I would have realistic expectations in terms of fading and so, and yes, also I am getting a smaller piece, not sure yet if I will get more - the idea what I have currently is - which I told the artist - that the piece should work as a standalone piece but if I decide that I want to add more elements I can build from it)
