The general gist of Georgism is that it's pro-capitalism, but anti-landlord, arguing everyone in capitalism becomes richer if you tax the unimproved value of land. The original release even had a tax system you could play with if you wanted. Remember, the lose condition of Monopoly is not being able to pay rent

He missed one detail about Monopoly LGE. The game doesn't end when the last property is purchased. No. It ends when one player owns every single property. And you can buy owned properties you land on by paying 100$ more than the rent to the original owner, who can't refuse this. Shorter, you say?
MCE had one more piece of rules-as-written that was absolutely bogus. The benchmark for whether you were caught was that someone had to accuse you of cheating before the next player rolled the dice. So you could just wait until a player was mid hand-swing to roll the dice, and grab the entire stack of 500's from the bank tray. And then the dice hit the table, and you got away with it. Works for any cheat of a similar nature.

I’m surprised the Animal Crossing monopoly didn’t get a mention. Dude I just remembered. Back in high school, I had a group of friends who'd gather around during lunch and play board games in our favorite teacher's room rather than go eat. One day someone came in with Monopoly Cheaters Edition. Like 20 minutes in, one of the seniors flipped the board and was pissed shouting about how stupid the game is. He genuinely rage quit and walked out of the room. 😭
Well, there are TONS of Nintendo-based Monopoly versions. They likely called it "Gamer" just to indicate that it's a point-based rule variant, not because of the Mario characters.
Actually no, theres 4 different versions of Monopoly Gamer, Kam just so happened to have only talked about The Mario Version of Monopoly Gamer. Theres also a Mario Kart version (Yes this is seperate from Mario Monopoly Gamer) a Sonic Version and an Overwatch Version.
In the Monopoly Gamer edition Yoshi is extremely broken. Each token has their own special ability and Yoshi’s is to collect every coin on the board. It doesn’t sound very good but trust me, that is exactly how they get you. Players drop coins like crazy, it’s absurd. We literally once ran out of coins because the Yoshi player had literally ALL of them. Fun game.
Fun Fact: When my family played Monopoly Gamer we didnt realize coins were supposed to drop at certain points so when my mom (who was playing as Yoshi) got to use her ability we were confused as to what she was supposed to do.
I myself am the proud owner of an official Monopoly board based around a municipality of around 40,000 people in southeastern Netherlands. I have no idea why it exists but I'm happy it does.
@@rafaeltheraven That honestly sounds like an amazing version to own. Also, it's super funny that you replied to my comment because your Hotel Mario video is a bit of an inside joke in my friend group.
@@Thoomas2001 Insane coincidence to run into someone who enjoyed my old shitpost lmao I used to have a period in which I collected a bunch of Monopoly variants (including Electronic, Empire and City as mentioned in this video. City is very much the best version). I also own a "Terschelling Editie" which for the non-dutchies is one of our islands and which has a population of about 5000 people.
@@rafaeltheraven The version I mentioned is, funnily enough, the only version of Monopoly I own whatsoever. I haven't played it all too much but it is really well-made. I once found a news article stating the villages of Smakt (Limburg) and Holthees (Noord-Brabant), collective population of less than 800, got a special Monopoly board together and that only one was made, but I can't seem to find much information about it anymore. I'd love to find out more about it.
The original Monopoly was invented in 1935, and was based around Atlantic City, USA, whose population then was about 65,000. Still not all that big. And that was about at its peak; its population has declined since and is now about 38,000.
I remember playing Chocolate Monopoly with a friend once, the whole game was over in 10 minutes. We proceeded to put the chocolates in the fridge to eat later and the fact that we forgot to take them out is testament to how uninteresting the game is.
So it _was_ supposed to be a game? I thought it was essentially a Monopoly-themed chocolate set with barely any pretense of being a game and/or gimmicky Spencer's Gifts type novelty gift. Doesn't look like much of a game, let alone Monopoly; I thought the whole point was that you wolf down the chocolates on the spot. It would be like having an edgy microbrew limited edition pack come in a sort of novelty "game" box for a simple drinking game. The whole point would be drinking the beer while you "play" the game.
@@salvadorromero9712 well, no. Like Kam said it was meant to just be a Monopoly themed chocolate set. We didnt know that and tried to play it like a game anyway.
As the kind of person to sell my left kidney for a full railroad set, it's extremely disappointing how it keeps getting omitted. Its probably for the best though, as I was looking at my right kidney to see how much it would go for on the black market.
Fun fact, on tabletop sim, there is an even longer version of monopaly, called insane monopaly, it has 80 properties over 2 boards, it even has an expansion that adds a new regular board and the "jail" board
Valefisk has done two videos playing that variation with his friend group, one on the then current version and another with the later updated version after one of the people behind the mod commented on the first video. Furthermore he made/found/modified a bunch of other board/video games, one more recent example being a more "realistic Monopoly", with mortgage mechanics for "buying" properties etc. etc. Well worth a watch.
There’s an even worse version called “insane monopoly: Pyramid Scheme”. Its got 8 tracks, 96 new properties, a jail board, taxes, and stocks. Valefisk played it, and I think it took them like 4 hours just to get all the way around the board.
The themed editions are the funniest because most of the themes don't make any sense. -Monopoly Top Gun: you buy the...um...planes? -Monopoly Bass fishing: why? -Monopoly Assassins Creed: a videogame about a legendary cult of sneaky warriors figthing the evil templars...really fits with the whole real estate theme of Monopoly -Monopoly The Beatles: what are you buying? Songs? You put an hotel in your song? But my favourite is Monopoly Warhammer 40k. The whole concept is absurd; why should be an alien race who only cares about eating interested in buying properties? Or staying in their enemy's hotel? Besides there is no special buildings, just regular houses and hotels, which makes it even more hilarious
I really hope that the Beatles one is, like, buying places from Beatles songs. Like, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields, Blackburn Lancashire, The Sea of Green, Lime Street...
Beatles Monopoly actually has some really fun creativity, like how the chance cards are all lines from songs ("A little help from my friends": every player pays you £10, stuff like that)
Surprised it wasn't mentioned during the Monopoly Socialism segment that the original Monopoly (Landlord's Game) had an anti-capitalism variant that was cut upon purchasing the idea. The original game was intended to highlight the negative aspects of capitalism so first cutting the anti-capitalist variant in order to capitalize on the game and then later introducing a socialism variant as if it's a new concept is just irony on top of irony.
Monopoly Socialism edition, Ms.Monopoly and Monopoly for millennials feel like Monopoly versions someone would illustrate for a joke Buzzfeed article about dumb or rejected Monopoly ideas.
With all these weird themes, who knows, one day they might make Monopoly: Skibidi Toilet Edition. Your equivalent to Get out of Jail Free is to sing the Skibidi Toilet song.
I have monopoly here and now buzzfeed edition and it is not just a reskin. The game has a unique win condition where you collect stamps from every property you own and fill them into a little passport. The winner is the one who fill the passport first. This makes the game way faster. I think you might have confused here and now regular which is just a reskin and that I have also played. 3:45
Next step: Scott makes a cameo. Ideally in a video that covers board-games based on video-games which there are a surprising amount of - and I don't just mean as Monopoly-themes, but straight adaptations. (Sidenote: Even without the Scott-the-Woz-cameo, that might be an interesting topic to tackle)
Wait so Monopoly Electronic banking counts as a revamp but House Divided with its white house mechanic, the fact that the board votes for the recipient of every chance card, and it's variation on the housing system doesn't?
Monopoly NBA didn't even though Kam _explicitly mentioned_ a huge mechanical difference! I had no idea that that very lame looking House Divided gimmick actually changed mechanics. Classing the ebanking thing as a revamp and then scolding it for having no revamp was just baffling and made no sense whatsoever. The ereader is a fussy part that can break and probably isn't the best designed way to implement cashless play, but otherwise it seems like the single most appealing idea for a variant of all.
Owner of Monopoly Pokemon edition - technically it has extra rules, if you roll two the same value on the dice. With snake eyes you can move anywhere you want, collecting ₽200 if passing GO, double 2s get you a free ₽200 from the bank, double 3s allow you to get ₽50 from every other player, double 4s draw you a community chest card, double 5s draw you a chance card. But here it get's interesting: If you roll double 6s, you can challange another player for a property (as long as it's not part of a set), choose what property to fight for and then both roll. Highest number wins. If your lucky enough, you can just steal your opponents property for free.
@@CarburetorThompsonI looked up the board. The locations are different parts of the Normandy region, many of which are where skirmishes to liberate France took place. D-Day wasn't *just* a beachside brawl, after all. One detail I noticed is that the special spaces are labelled in both French and English, which is kind of a nice touch.
"Hello Based Department? I'd like to nominate someone for your board of directors." XD You absolutely cooked with this one Kam, this video was a blast! Thanks for the shoutout as well! My personal favourite take on Monopoly™: 'Place' edition has to be the string of versions specifically for UK universities, and not just the big ones! You too can play the University of Roehampton monopoly edition!
Hey there! Personal owner of a copy of Monopoly Gamer here, there’s two things about that game that I’ve seen not really talked about One: the power up dice HAS TO be rolled. There are often scenarios where this can lead to one player in particular getting completely screwed over without any intention. Two: each of the characters have their own special ability that was unique to them, and often had packets of other characters sold next to them. Within that starter box, there isn’t as much balance as you would expect, with usually Donkey Kong or Yoshi completely annihilating people. It’s essentially introducing an invasive species to deal with Rocket Powered Tigers
As another person with Monopoly Gamer, very true. I have no idea why they made DK and Yoshi's abilities to be so broken. The game itself is still pretty fun though!
In México all Monopoly gamer come with all characters + Wario, he is cool but is sad that is virtually imposible to have all the "DLC" characters :( i want Rosalina and Boo.
I wonder what the railroads are in 40k monopoly. Are they warp portals? Or is it that kind of monopoly where the licensed theme is only slapped in the middle but the rest of the game use the classic monopoly theming (i. e. the properties have their original names)
@andreibaciu7518 I used to have it and if I remember correctly I think they were Craft Worlds. I want to say Craft Worlds but now that I have it written down it both feels too silly and perfectly on brand. So I looked it up and yep; at least in some versions they are Craft Worlds.
I was so confused that Fortnite Monopoly wasn't in the 45 rethemed versions of Monopoly section. Can't wait to see the glory of hitting a clip at Pennsylvania Avenue.
Yeah, surprisingly it's not just a themed version of Monopoly; it actually has some unique mechanics to it. Not what most people would consider "good" ones, but they are unique, got to give it that.
Hes not kidding when he says the themed Monopolies are endless. There was an official version for the Thumb of Michigan, where all the spaces were things like the "Bad Axe Wal-Mart" (Bad Axe is a town of like 3000 people) Its where i grew up and someday i WILL own a copy of it. This is the only thing that drives me forward
Cheaters edition truly is terrible. The flaw with the game is that when you’re supposed to cheat, everyone watches you like a hawk making it near impossible to pull off.
@@Lorekeeper_GGuyIn it’s current state, Chemicards (amalgam) and it’s not even close. We are talking over 1200 physical cards(before the trimming in phase 2), multiple discard piles, hundreds of basically one-off mechanics, multiple cards per card, multiple playable characters and companions for those characters, etc. It is literally over 850 versions of uno forced together in a shape that should not be. I am so excited for it to be refined and made into a functional game.
My favorite incongruous Monopoly reskin is Star Trek. You know, the utopian future where humanity has abandoned the pursuit of wealth in favor of bettering itself.
I always wondered what some of those weirder versions of Monopoly were like but never wanted to fork over the money for them to likely only play once. Your sacrifice is much appreciated.
minor correction: as someone who thoroughly enjoys monopoly empire and has played many, many games of it, you do not HAVE to swap if you roll the swap on the die. swapping tiles is optional, not forced
My son asked me if monopoly is the fortnite of board games because it uses a lot of cameos. Im not sure if im going to beat him with my cane or just use it to pick up my prune juice while i listen to the radio phone.
I found an exploit in MCE. If a player accuses you of cheating and they were wrong they need to pay all other players money. However if there is not concrete proof of whether the person cheated it is left to the other players to decide. So, blatantly cheat (example: steal from the bank), no one probably knew exactly how much you had so there isn’t solid proof when someone accuses you. The other players say you didn’t cheat, and everyone profits. At the downfall of one foolish enough to fall for this.
Yeah don't you have to be able to point out exactly what was stolen, either from another player or the bank? So saying "I saw you cheat" isn't enough, you have to know exactly how much they stole. Absolute BS.
I love Monopoly Empire. The simplified ruleset and quick win conditions make it great for younger players who may not have the patience for regular Monopoly. I also just have fond memories of fighting with my sister over who got to play as the Coca-Cola bottle and wether or not that made you entitled to the Coke billboard.
A lot of these "Special Editions" like the ASML version were commissioned by companies as gifts for their employees. They were never available for retail purchase. I know a cleaner who works in a student dormitory who was given one for Christmas by her employer.
6:37 This is incorrect. Luigi was sold seperately along with several other characters. Bowser is only in the collectors edition, and Monopoly Gamer:Mario Kart had a seperately sold Shy Guy
Sore Losers could probably be made good in a similar way to City by just ditching the bad rules. Remove the free houses and reimplement selling houses and it could turn into a fun night
If you didn't know, monopoly gamer when it first came out sold seperate packs of characters that you could get to expand your roster, Luigi being one of them.
I feel like you got off lightly. You could have been abducted and held in solitary confinement until you agreed to come up with a North Korean version of Buckaroo that included an allegory about socialism and highlighted the virtues of the North Korean work ethic.
My favorite edition is Monopoly Grzybobranie (Monopoly Mushroom Picking) available only in Poland because Poles love mushroom picking so much. It actually has quite pretty art if I would say myself.
Local monopolies were always the best. I for one grew up on Manitowoc Wisconsin monopoly. We were so down bad for properties that the local holiday inn made it to green tier and the railroads were car dealerships
You know how they could implement "railroads let you jump to a different railroad" interestingly? Keep the normal railroad mechanics, except if you land on an unowned one, you can jump to a different unowned one instead of buying it. It could be a powerful gamble in the early game to get to the high-value properties before everyone else, but it's a gamble that _means_ something because the railroads mean something, not a do-nothing space that immediately loses what little utility it had.
An idea I had with it is that you can choose to use it as a teleport space _if_ the same person owns both the source and destination, though you have to pay said owner to do so. That might make an interesting dilemma in the later game; let another player have a second railroad, or risk landing on one of the house or hotel spaces between them.
growing up, my parents had a "star wars monopoly" box that we used whenever we wanted to play monopoly. i think it was from sometime in the 90s or earlier because it didn't have anything from the prequels in it. i liked that it didn't change much from the base game (which my grandparents had), all that changed was the theming on the player tokens, the houses/hotels (now starfighters), and the spaces/cards/money; the values on each space were the same as base monopoly
Couple notes about LGE. Not only does the game end when one person owns all properties, if you land on someone else’s property, you can pay rent+$10 to steal it from them. Including houses/hotels on it. Combine that with a card that has the player with the most properties return half of them to the market, and you rapidly realize the optimal strategy is to mortgage every property you get the instant you get it so they can’t be stolen. However, the board and cards have been balanced so that you will net gain money when you go around the board. I played this game for 20 hours. It ended because the owner of the game graduated.
I'm German and even I audibly let out one of those "This is REALLY inappropriate/uncomfortable" quiet wheezes when you read out "Monopoly D-Day Edition"
Mega Monopoly is especially fun. Expanded board more money, more buildings, etc. And the "Socialism" edition is fun if you play co-op and have everyone complete all ten improvements
hard to believe a "revamped" monopoly me and my sister came up with as kids is better than half the ones on this list. it was called "depressing monopoly". and basically you start with no money, go into debt, and the game ends when someone makes enough money to get out of debt. meaning there is no money. just a notepad where, every turn, you write down the amount of debt you're in.
Apparently Hasbro considers the railroads to be such an integral part of the original board game’s identity that they MUST remove them from every spin off ever. “Hey man, you wanna play this Monopoly spin-off?” “Nah, that’s not a spin-off, it has railroads”
Got to love the ultimate irony of game originally designed to show one of the evils of capitalism, becoming a capitalism icon that eventually has a version about socialism, a version that makes more money via capitalism.
I like it as a 45-60 min game that's there to make a political point. I wouldn't play it intentionally as I own other games I prefer, but back in uni a friend *really* clicked with Monopoly once he played the actual rulebook without house rules, so every session he attended would involve one Monopoly match.
I'm convinced that the main reason Monopoly has such a vocal hatedom is because so few people know the actual rules. I've played with people who think the Free Parking thing is official, I've played with people who think trading properties is cheating, I myself had no idea auctions were a thing or about any of the restrictions when it comes to building houses until embarrassingly late in my life...
@@LendriMujina the game is hated because: it has almost no strategy, once a player starts building houses the game snowballs into his victory and if you play with a group of 3 or more, the players who already loss have to wait untill the game is over to do something else
Had a monopoly electronic banking when I was younger, it read the cards by small bumps on the cards, me and my cousin very soon figured out that if you put your card in and forced it to the side or just a little diagonal it accessed another players account, we used this all the time very subtly to just steal from our family during the game, we decided before who was going to win and never lost a single time, truly my favourite boardgame ever
I’m pretty sure my first game of Monopoly was Electronic Banking. I remember thinking the credit cards and the readers were so much fun to goof around with.
I wonder if there is enough content for a video on The Game of Life variants. Target edition has a hilariously huge flaw in the rules, where you get more points the longer you are in the store, and you have to manually choose to leave the store. If you are the last person on the board, you can just keep taking your turn for 30 minutes until you win.
ironically, Monopoly-but-Socialism is arguably more similar to what the ACTUAL game of Monopoly was when originally sold by Lizzie Magie as "The Landlord's Game" in 1902. She was anti-monopolist and created it as an educational game to explain the dangers and harms of monopolies and one of the game modes was basically everyone working together to collectively gain money and win lol.
it might actually have less of an audience than WWB. WWB is so bad that its an unique ironic expierence while LGE is a better WWB but not good enough to be good.

monopoly lge really feels like they built the board and all its pieces, went "this isn't fun" and decided to write as many rules to break the concept as they could in an attempt to make the game somehow satisfy a general audience. 😭
I hope we was wearing the jail handcuff and walked away with it and the board still attached to him

I adore how the Nintendo licensed edition of Monopoly is called Monopoly Gamer. If you play any other game, you don’t exist.
Well, there are TONS of Nintendo-based Monopoly versions. They likely called it "Gamer" just to indicate that it's a point-based rule variant, not because of the Mario characters.

Fun game.
Yoshi is king for a reason.

The Netherlands loves its Monopoly variants. I own a copy themed after a local hotel chain (Van der Valk Editie)

I used to have a period in which I collected a bunch of Monopoly variants (including Electronic, Empire and City as mentioned in this video.

-Monopoly Assassins Creed: a videogame about a legendary cult of sneaky warriors figthing the evil templars...really fits with the whole real estate theme of Monopoly
-Monopoly The Beatles: what are you buying?
My family owns a copy of Monopoly Bass Fishing, the properties are either famous lakes or fishing companies, and the railroads are fishing boats.
Beatles Monopoly actually has some really fun creativity, like how the chance cards are all lines from songs ("A little help from my friends": every player pays you £10, stuff like that)
Assasins Creed monopoly kinda works since Ezio was actually buying and developing real estate during AC2 and Brotherhood
I know some of the themed monopoly boards (like the Sailor Moon one which exists for reasons ig) has you buying the characters, which is kinda weird.
Monopoly socialism edition was the original
I have monopoly here and now buzzfeed edition and it is not just a reskin. The game has a unique win condition where you collect stamps from every property you own and fill them into a little passport. The winner is the one who fill the passport first.

It's an old joke, but it checks out.

Double 6 isn't as bananas as I remember, I remember it as yoinking the whole set

Hey there! Personal owner of a copy of Monopoly Gamer here, there’s two things about that game that I’ve seen not really talked about
One: the power up dice HAS TO be rolled.
I remember Yoshi being broken, but what did DK do?

I found an exploit in MCE. If a player accuses you of cheating and they were wrong they need to pay all other players money. However if there is not concrete proof of whether the person cheated it is left to the other players to decide. So, blatantly cheat (example: steal from the bank), no one probably knew exactly how much you had so there isn’t solid proof when someone accuses you. The other players say you didn’t cheat, and everyone profits. At the downfall of one foolish enough to fall for this.
Every day, MCE breaks even more. XD
Yeah don't you have to be able to point out exactly what was stolen, either from another player or the bank? So saying "I saw you cheat" isn't enough, you have to know exactly how much they stole. Absolute BS.

I'm tempted to say that Monopoly Electronic Banking is actually a pretty neat idea just because of having less paper to deal with.
growing up, my parents had a "star wars monopoly" box that we used whenever we wanted to play monopoly. i think it was from sometime in the 90s or earlier because it didn't have anything from the prequels in it. i liked that it didn't change much from the base game (which my grandparents had), all that changed was the theming on the player tokens, the houses/hotels (now starfighters), and the spaces/cards/money; the values on each space were the same as base monopoly
We had that one too, good times.
I grew up playing the electronic banking edition and was so confused when I had to figure out how the mortgage works in regular monopoly

I can't believe that Monopoly: Recycling in Sosnowiec didn't make it to the list.
As somebody who's been watching Magic the Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons dying a slow and painful death, "That's Hasbro! Doing what they do best: screwing things up!" hits a bit too close to home LMAO.
I'm glad Mr Sandwich admits to liking monopoly (although I usually just play video game versions because trying to do the math is annoying)
Admitting this was very brave of you. I haven’t been able to tell my friends I like Monopoly.
