      @@s_.777 That scene, as harrowing as it is, served a lot of purpose. Ramsey was being "nice" to Sansa up until then. Almost up to the point to make you believe that he would be good to Sansa in some twisted way. That scene solidified how much of an evil prick he truly is and there's no redeeming him. Also most importantly, it starts the catalyst for Reek to become Theon again. People are kinda hypocritical for whining about r*** scenes but completely fine with people getting chopped up like vegetables in this show. Not downplaying the heinous crime that is r***. But this world is full of crimes. R***, murder, robbing, the list goes on.

      @@theascendunt9960 People condemning rape scenes in TV shows as being worse than murder scenes is not, by definition, hypocritical. Hypocrisy is talking down to others for considering the depiction of rape to be worse than the depiction of murder while literally censoring the word "rape" in your message because of how awful you consider it to be yourself. If you have a different reason for censoring it, please share, and tread carefully.

    Littlefinger's plan here is pretty clever and often overlooked. He brought Sansa to Winterfell for exactly the reason he told her - if Stannis wipes out the Boltons Sansa gets installed ruler of The North then Littlefinger can come in and marry her. If the Boltons win Littlefinger can send in the Knights of the Vale to finish them off, making him a hero in the eyes of the North and a worthy husband to Sansa. And if Sansa doesn't survive he still gets named Warden of the North by Cersei.
    No matter what happens he wins.

    • @roseofthegarden_
      @roseofthegarden_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +110

      Which shows how smart, but how manipulative and uncaring he is. Sansa is just a pawn to him. He may be attracted to her, but she's a key to him primarily. If he can't have the key, so long as the door to the North is still open, he'll take it, with or without her.

    • @sheilaburns8977
      @sheilaburns8977 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Very true, and he convinced Sansa to agree to marry Ramsey because he knows she wants the "castle" life. Same reason she did not accept the Hound's offer to help her or, initially, Brienne's offer to help. They represent no power to her. She sees power and a potential husband in Littlefinger, and she wants to be a "queen," so she agrees to marry a sadist, the son of the man who betrayed her family and murdered her brother. I know she didn't realize how horrible it would be, and once she accepted Littlefinger's plan, she was trapped. … PEACE.

    • @ccispahan7514
      @ccispahan7514 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Sheila Burns Sansa despises Littlefinger. She would never marry him at this point of the story. She lets him touch and kiss her only to keep him in check and find out what he’s up to. He also represents a familiar evil, she clearly told him that she lied for him because she knew what he wanted (her) and felt he was her safest bet then. She has to follow his shitty plan now because she hopes to be in a better position to retake Winterfell at some point. Also, she refused Brienne’s help because she did not know her as well as she knows LF and wasn’t willing to take any chances. But in a very subtle way, she made sure that Brienne understood her life (and Pod’s) was at risk (‘sometimes, we do [have a choice]’) and that LF would never let her live after catching sight of Sansa with him. I don’t think that Sansa is after power now: she’s after survival and leveraging her resources to minimize risks.

      Sheila Burns Sansa definitely does NOT want to marry Littlefinger

    • @BossAttack
      @BossAttack 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      No, it doesn't. Littlefinger's plan made zero sense, it was just some contrived nonsense the showrunners came up with so Sansa could get raped. Just think about it. Littlefinger is already Lord of Harrenhal and Lord Paramount of the Trident thanks to his alliance with the Lannisters. That means all the River Lords owe fealty to Littlefinger, a title that once belonged to her mother's family, the Tully's. Additionally, through his marriage to Lysa Arryn, he is now Lord Protector of the Eyrie and Vale of Arryn. He essentially rules the Vale in all but name since Robin is so little and easily influenced.
      But now, despite carefully acquiring both titles, something someone as low-born as him should never have been able to accomplish, he decides to throw it all away and give Sansa Stark to the Boltons. Do I need to explain why this is so dumb and makes no sense? 1) Sansa Stark has been declared a traitor to the Crown, wanted in the death of Joffrey Baratheon. Cercei in particular would move hell on Earth and break any alliance with anyone who sheltered her. Yet, LF openly gives her to Roose Bolton. Thus, he risks having all his lands and title stripped by the Crown for aiding a traitor.
      2) Why would Roose Bolton even accept such a "gift" without the approval of the Crown? Roose is allied with the Lannisters, the Lannisters are the ones that made him Warden of the North, yet he's going to openly have his son marry Sansa Stark, without approval, risking open warfare with the Lannisters?
      3) Stannis HATES Littlefinger, had Stannis been King while Robert was alive he would've hanged him and Varys for the schemers that they are. The idea that Stannis would ally with LF if he wins against the Boltons simply because LF protected Sansa Stark is insane. LF knows that Stannis is a brutally just and honest man, he would never ally with or trust LF. Thus, his only ally in the North would be the Boltons.
      4) LF should know that Ramsay Snow is a monster, he has spies everywhere but suddenly is dumbstruck that a Bolton is a sociopath? Surely he must know that if Sansa survives such an ordeal that she would never trust him again given that Ramsay is a fucking monster and LF gave her away to him.
      Nothing about the plan makes sense, it's just contrived nonsense in order to shock the audience.

    A lot of people thought the ending scene was just shock value, but I disagree. IMO there was no other way this wedding night could've gone down. We've known who and what Ramsey is since season 3: a raping, murdering, torturing sadist. He derives joy from the pain and suffering of others, and keeping the victim alive only extends that joy. That doesn't and wouldn't change just because he's married to Sansa. He played nice long enough to get what he wanted, and now that Sansa "belongs to him", he can show his true face and enjoy his new plaything.

      >>A lot of people thought the ending scene was just shock value
      You make a very good point.
      All I'd add is that I don't think "a lot of people" thought it was shock value. A very small number of vocal people (mostly 2nd rate "celebrities" whose careers had died or people with an agenda to to push) made a "fuss" about the rape which of course the media gleefully jumped on. Said complainers had never criticised anything else in the show previously (e.g. Theon being tortured over successive episodes resulting in his penis being cut off or people being brutally killed - heck 10 year old boy pushed from window springs to mind.). Rape is apparently a no-no (although of course it isn't actually shown - thankfully. Murder and torture however? Said complainers had no problem with that🙄 😏

      thedifferent14 in the books this storyline didn’t belong to sansa. so it was completely avoidable and unnecessary. so yes, it WAS shock value. and i’ll forever be angry at this decision they made on the show. i don’t like seeing these kind of scenes and i’m sure no one else does, so adding one just to “prove a point” on a character (like i saw someone justify on a comment around here) isn’t needed when we all know and seen what he’s like several times.

    • @TrueTargaryen2012
      @TrueTargaryen2012 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Mel - Agreed, as you said it WAS completely for shock value.
      Sansa has already endured a number of horrific scenario's but once arriving at the Vale her storyline begins to transform, but the showrunners did a swap and orchestrated it so Sansa would become Ramsey's wife and get raped.
      It was entirely unnecessary and turned Sansa's storyline into torture porn. (HBO can have great quality shows but they have a tendency to resort to lazy, shock value scenarios in some cases, which is frustrating)

    What Aemon said was what he said to Aegon (nicknamed Egg by Aemon) before Aemon set off to Castle Black, after denying the throne, in the books. ''Kill the boy and let the man be born'' points to that he is going to have to make decisions that won't always be liked; tough decisions. To get back to the book reference: He told Aegon to ''stop being an Egg, and start being an Aegon''.
    Why did he touch his face? Well, Aemon is blind.
    It's not so much a riddle when the background of Aemon is known. For him it's mostly a repeat of the past; a young person rising to power with him at the side.

    This made me weep for Sansa. Ramsay is such a thoroughly evil being that there could never be a redemption for him. 😡
    As far as Arya and the way the Hound's death went, I don't think Arya could decide exactly how she felt about him at that time. On the one hand, she still held him accountable for Mycah's death, but on the other, she had come to care for him and realized he was not as horrible as she'd thought. That's why I think she looked so confused about why Jaqen hit her. At least, that's how I saw it. 😊
    As always, thank you guys so much for these reactions!

    The closing scene of this episode is clearly horrific. However, I've struggled to understand why it shocks so many people in comparison to all the show has thrown at us beforehand. For example, the same fate happens to Daenerys in the opening episode, which I found much more disturbing because I wasn't yet acclimatised to the terrible world depicted in the show, not to mention the disturbing fact that she then fell in love with her forced husband!

    • @Katibree
      @Katibree 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      I think the difference in reaction is because Dany wasn't tortured, beaten, and abused season after season while barely claiming any power of her own before being taken advantage of again and brutally raped.
      Dany started from the bottom where we barely knew her and then worked her way up, so people were less outraged. Sansa's story is her constantly getting kicked while she's down and then being sold off to another sadist again and getting raped on top of that.
      Allot of people just finslly hit a breaking point with that scene asking when is enough, enough?

      The bit with Dany at the beginning always bothered me more, because after the first two episodes, Drogo is shown as an ally to Dany, sending the message that "rape isn't all that bad." Whereas here it's done by Ramsay, who we already know to be a twisted sadist, and who continues to be after this scene. In this scene, there is no moral ambiguity. Ramsay is bad, period. He's never redeemed. Drogo was quite quickly redeemed, which, while making a more satisfying arc for Dany, still unjustifiably justifies rape.

    • @EScoglio
      @EScoglio 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@bovineking8927 I think with Drogo too, rape was sort of presented as just part of the Dothraki life. Drogo also at least took Dany somewhere private whereas Ramsey forced Theon to watch. Drogo didn't seem to take pleasure in raping Dany. It was presented almost as if he was saying "We're married now, this is what we do."

    The film making is incredible in this episode. Their work around to not showing Sansa getting raped (Which I don't think they wanted to show that since I don't think they'd wanna do Sophie like that) instead slowly zooming into Theon's face of absolute horror drives that sequence home. Not seeing what Ramsey is doing to Sansa makes it even more horrific because your mind and Alfie's acting makes it so. Shout out to Bryan Cogman who directed this episode.

    Are Nikki & Steven aware of the Azor Ahai lore? I don't think this is spoilery, since it's still lore within the show. But it really isn't covered that much in the show. In brief, ages ago Azor Ahai (aka The Prince That Was Promise) helped defeat the White Walkers. And there's a belief that when the time comes he shall return to save the realm again.
    It's this belief that drives the Red Woman Milasandre. She firnly believes that Stannis is this hero reborn.

      Aemon's been at the Wall nearly 60 years, and counseled Lord Commander Brynden Rivers (Targaryen), the commander before him, at least 1 or more unnamed Lord Commanders after him, and Lord Commander Qorgyle, Mormont, and now Jon Snow. If anything, I believe he's speaking generally about life, about how becoming a man means you make need to make tough choices, and live with those choices, trusting that you made the best choices you could at the time. This is especially true at the Wall, and Aemon has experienced these life and death choices and the men who make them for a very long time. Sure he too became a man, choosing to become a Maester instead of King. But in speaking to Jon, and his role as Lord Commander, I think he is speaking specifically about what being Lord Commander of the men of the Night's Watch requires, and what Jon must become.

And yes, we had the same question about Gendry, and people made that exact same "still rowing" joke. It's a meme. The Faceless Men are pretty savage but the relationship with death is not straightforward. Sometimes they kill for mercy, like what Arya did to the sick girl. Sometimes it's for other reasons, . The Tyrion/Jorah pairing is really good. Littlefinger is the biggest shitbag. The Tyrell situation... Joffrey would never have allowed this. Tommen is weak. And Sansa... this is the most controversial episode because of this marital rape. It's horrid. We are right with you right there on that holy shit.

    I thank both of you for the huge efforts put into the channel. I love watching how you debate before and after the episodes, that really deepen the results. Also, how you appreciate all the work of the little hands in the show (costume, scenery, all the special effects). The horses stuns too ! (I promise Nikki if you like horses you should watch the behind the scenes thingy afterwards, the mastery of the riders during the shooting is INCREDIBLE). Oh and ! For two minutes of dragon it's six weeks of work by a whole team, the 3D models are shaped by bones, muscles, scales... Even the inside of the dragons are modelised, that's why they seems so alive, so vibrant ! That's what I want to do in my future job, and it amaze the fuck out of me to see how much they work for this show (in the future seasons you will be blown away by the special effects, because oh boi, that's just a taste until now).

    You guys talking about letting episodes marinate in your minds and then after some time, things start to click, but sometimes risk over-analyzing and spoiling things for yourself.... I remember seeing an interview with a well renowned director/producer, can’t for the life of me remember who, but someone who’s work you’d know... they were talking about how Netflix and binge watching is changing how TV is consumed vs traditional weekly episodes. Their concern with binge watching is it robs you of the time between episodes, for you to fully absorb them and think and talk about them, and invariably form different opinions than you had right after you originally watched the episode. It was a real interesting take, from their perspective... but personally I’ll stick to the binge watching. It’s nice to catch up on a years old series like you guys are doing. You get to connect the dots and appreciate call backs to previous episodes and seasons that are fresh in your mind because you recently saw them, whereas in normal TV you’d never remember the smaller details from episodes you saw years ago. These days I purposely wait until seasons finish before I watch them. Except GOT of course...

    I send you hugs. They're virtual, but they're all I've got.
    There was a huge controversy over Sansa's scene for a couple of reasons. One of them was that they cut to Theon and people were saying that made it all about him instead of Sansa. But I disagree. I absolutely think the focus is still on Sansa and Theon is basically all of us watching/hearing this happen. Fantastic performance from Alfie, btw.

      Yes it didn't make it about Theon! It was an obvious reflection of her pain probably even better than she would have portrayed it . And yes Alfie is under appreciated I feel he is waaaay too good in this scene/role

    Been binge-watching this show with you guys, three years after the fact and enjoying your efforts at editing and reacting. It's been a fun ride so far. Found your channel from your "Walking Dead" reactions. I call it a "Viewer's Digest" version of Game of Thrones.

    The Arya/many faced god story is the most interesting one imo. Its so mysterious that it just engages us when we clearly dont understand anything thats going on or what it even means. In any other show, this could be very boring but not in GOT.

    Fun fact about Theon: After Roberts Rebellion, Balon Greyjoy (theonsfather) wouldn't bend the knee to Robert. This was called the Greyjoy Rebellion. So Robert sent Stannis to attack Balons fleet because their greatest power was their ships. As Jaimie mentioned in season 1, Thoros of Myr ran into Pyke with a flaming sword, he was referring to the greyjoy rebellion. Anyway, theons brothers were killed and then Balon gave in. But as a failsafe in case Balon ever rebelled again, Robert made Ned take Theon and grow him up at Winterfell so if Balon ever rebelled Ned would have to execute Theon. I doubt he would though, but we will never find out now. That's why Theon refers to himself as a Stark prisoner is season 2!

    25:30 Remember what Joffrey did with those whores? And all his threats that he would rape Sansa? "How would you like that?... You wouldn't? That's alright, Ser Mandon and Sir whatever will hold you down" Not sure he would have been better.

      He wouldn't have been any better Definitely Ramsey is a piece of shit but at least he does his own evil deeds himself he doesn't order someone else do it for him . Not that this makes him a better anything but still important to know the difference in savagery lol

    Wow...where do we go from here? Jaimie/Bronn in Dorne, Jorah & Tyrion in Essos, arya stuck in Bravos, Jon at the wall trying to figure stuff out, Kings landing in chaos (thanks to Cersei), poor Sansa suffering at Winterfell (thanks to Little Finger), and Dany marrying some "hack", what va mess!!...Always enjoy your post...TC

    Don't be mad at Tommen, he's even younger in the books and he has no idea what is he doing, being manipulated by Margaery and Cersei.

      @ZENOBlAmusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Exactly, it is almost shocking how people try to blame Tommen for everything. The first advice Tommen ever received was to listen to his counsellors, from Tywin. Tommen was raised to follow as Cersei states to Ned in season 1, that is the task of the second son. Cersei, and even Margaery to an extent, are so interested in power that they completely overwhelm Tommen. All of them are only interested in their own needs. Cersei is the worst, in her search for power she allows Tommen to be humiliated and undermined. She is the root cause of all these problems.

      Jarin but this isn’t the books it’s the show. I absolutely agree that it’s unfair to blame Tommen in the books: he’s like, 8. However, Tommen in the show is WAY too old to be as foolish and ineffective as he is. He’s having sex with Margaery and it’s not being written as rape, which means he’s an adult. He should know better and honestly I am completely unsympathetic to Show!Tommen

    • @ms_scribbles
      @ms_scribbles 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Amen to that. I hate when people bitch about Tommen when the blame should go almost entirely to Cersei and to a lesser extent Margaery. Had they left well enough alone, Tommen could be a wonderful king who's generous and kind to his people. He certainly is the first king since the Mad King's father, Jaeherys II, who actually gave a single shit about the people of Westeros.
      But no, of course, Cersei fucks everything up and it's TOMMEN'S fault. Whatever.

    • @BIGxBOSSxx1
      @BIGxBOSSxx1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. They could be mad at whoever they want to be mad at in the show.
      2. This is the show, not the books, therefore his age in the book is 100% irrelevant in this context.
      3. Tommen quite literally has all the power in the world to put the high sparrow in a cell but he doesn't out of stupidity.
