      strongly agree. i saw another comment mentioning how everyone fell in love with hodor despite him only ever saying one word. first thing that came to my mind was “actions speak louder than words” and all of hodors actions were selfless. thats why we loved him.

      the way i always saw it was that he was given the vision of his death, and only being able to say one thing always reminded him of his ultimate sacrifice he would have to make, and that it was the most important thing he had to do

    Hodor didn't die for his King, or the Realm. Not for Gold or for Glory. Not to serve a Noble House or bring down another. Not because it was his duty or he had been told to. Not for revenge or power.
    He lived the most innocent life and died for the simplest, purest reason - to help his friends.
    Which ironically gave him the most noble, honourable sacrifice in the entire show.
    Sleep well Hodor, the smiling giant.

    Like when they were in that tower and he got scared and said “Hodor”.
    Or the time they were in that place with the well and he stuck his face down it and yelled “HODOR!”

      I think this is right on the nose. Jojen talks about how Bran will forget who he is the more he 'wargs', that he'll be more Summer than Bran. And the show doesn't feature as much of Bran doing this to Hodor, but in the books he actually spends a fair amount of time in Hodor, and sometimes he can't tell if a thought is his or if it is Hodor's. Not to mention, once absorbing all the information from the 3-Eyed-Raven, the piece of him that is Bran becomes even smaller than before. So when he loses parts of himself (Summer and Hodor in this instance), what's really left but the 3-Eyed-Raven?

    That was Ned's father Rickard Stark talking to young Ned before he went to the Vale (along with Robert Baratheon) to be trained by Jon Arryn. Remember in the first season Cat says Jon Arryn was "like a father" to Ned - that's where that came from. Also, interesting fact, Ned named his oldest two boys after his best friends (Jon Snow = Jon Arryn and Robb = Robert Baratheon) and his youngest sons after his family (Bran = Brandon Stark, Ned's brother, and Rickon = Rickard Stark, Ned's father).

    Brienne is not disgusted by Tormund so much as she's simply confused because she can't understand why a guy is looking at her in a way that no other guy has before. She is disgusted in a way. Its more like she's thinking "I'm an ugly lumbering beast. Why the hell are you interested in someone like me? There must be something wrong with you to be interested."

    • @1lamafarmer
      @1lamafarmer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Okay, I know this comment is 2 years late, but dude, WTF? No, that is completely reductive of her character and sense of self. Brienne had a flawed and stilted (and perfectly written and executed) romance with Jaime, and she grew as a character because of it. The thing with Tormund is just a gag for laughs - a fan service way for people to ship a new pair of characters. Don't demean Brienne's self-confidence and understanding of her own womanhood that she has so rightfully earned throughout her character arc (back when this show was written with tact and skill). By driving her back into that perspective of "UwU I'm just a big ugly girl, no man could ever love me", you are doing her, and by extension women, a disservice. She's a battle-weary badass in the middle of a war for humanity, and Tormund's immature lust is beneath her. She finds it perplexing, insulting and ridiculous, and quite rightly so.

    • @jeremybr2020
      @jeremybr2020 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@1lamafarmer It doesn't seem as though you understood Brienne's character at all. Yes, I agree that Brienne's relationship with Jaime made her character grow. And whether it was a perfectly written and executed is a subject for debate. Either way, the writers managed to throw a match into the entire thing in less than a few episodes. But that is the subject of another discussion. If you knew Brienne's character at all, you would know that she suffered from a serious self confidence issue in terms of her looks and ability to have a relationship with the opposite sex. She understood that her nickname of "Brienne the beauty" was meant in jest. The thing with Tormund happened before the relationship with Jamie advanced to the point past anything other than mutual respect for each other. They weren't romantically involved yet. She absolutely thought of herself as ugly and that no man could love her in that way. These aren't opinions, these are facts. And do me a favor and don't make this damn conversation about women in general. I'm talking about one character and one only. To spin this into a sexist issue will be unproductive and undeserved. As far as her feelings when Tormund was ogling her, in truth it is all speculation regardless. She never states her feelings about it out loud. So neither you or myself really has any clue what she thought for certain.

We see Bran only seeing the past and what's happening to Willis there, not what's going on in the present so Meera telling Hodor to hold the door isn't she also to blame? Bran was still in his vision of Willis becoming Hodor not realising fully what's going on in the present. The three eyed raven took him to that point knowing Bran wouldn't be able to get out of his download situation (becoming the three eyed raven or becoming not Bran but soulless) knowing Hodor had to be sacrificed for Bran to carry on his legacy as the three eyed raven. I don't think Bran is the only one to blame here, I feel the three eyed raven and Meera was more to blame, Meera was in control of present Hodor which is why she had to tell him to hold the door and the three eyed raven told Bran specifically "listen to your friend" so he was going to follow Meera's instructions for Hodor while he was stuck in the vision. The death of Hodor was heart wrenching but I always get the chills because the one thing you can be sure of is that he’s going to hold that damned door to protect Bran. Hodor was always a sweet innocent giant - even looking in horror at his bloody hands when they fled Craster’s Keep in season 3 - but he spent his life protecting Bran. The look of hard, doomed determination on his face, laying his massive frame against that door 🚪 to give Bran time to escape, feeling the claws and weapons rip at him... but holding the door despite the pain and fear... just holding the door... his face intense through the fear and anguish... he held the door.

      I never thought about the Night King being a possible Stark ancestor. There may be power in the Stark blood, the power to warg and the power of true visions, which most strongly manifests in Bran, but remember Rickon and Bran shared the dream about Ned dying. All the Stark children shared strong connections with their dire wolves as well which might be a part of this power. The creation of the Night King looked like it was supposed to be an execution, but perhaps the Stark blood abilities instead transformed into something utterly terrifying rather than killing him. If the children couldn't kill him by stabbing him through the heart, perhaps others will find similar difficulties slaying him. Maybe in the end it will take a Stark wielding the powers of the Stark blood to kill him.

GRRM said that in Westeros (the same in our real history) different noble houses will set up a foster child relationship with other noble houses to provide training and to establish alliances and friendships. Kids like Ned will leave home and be reared for a few years and return when they're around mid teens. That's why Jon Arryns death was such a big jumping off point for the events of this show/book series. Ned and The Almighty King Bob were raised in the ways of tactics, knighthood, etc by Jon Arryn. He was essentially a second father to them.

    • @ragnar97
      @ragnar97 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ianwestc To be fair, even if both heard the voice, it could've said different things to each of them. Hell, for all we know the sorcerer didn't hear it at all even if he was the one to summon it.
      Edit: Varys isn't a dummy so he would've accounted for the sorcerer telling others if that was a possibility. The fact he was so shocked means he knows there's no possible way she couldn't learned of the existence of the voice or what it said through normal means.

    Its not a surprise that Bran looks like the knights King, the Stark's are descendants of the first men and the man turned by the Children was probably a Stark but that was thousands of years ago, the first men arrived in Westeros, and it was unpopulated by men. But the Children have striking similarities to the old northern European Gods similar to the Druids the Vikings Celts and Pict's especially with the Tree's as a focal point of worship and stone Circles/Henges. And the red woman who frightened Varus was wearing a identical necklace to Melisandre, so if you hook up with a hot looking chick wearing that necklace, just know you are going to wake up next to something really nasty in the morning.

    Valar Morghulis: All men must die. Valar Dohaeris: All men must serve. It is the ultimate act of service, to die while holding the door. And isn't that what all our tragic heroes are doing...losing their lives in an attempt to hold the door? To prevent something worse from entering into the world? To give some small protection to humanity? To buy time? To sound the alarm? To caution of the threat in our midst? Even Robb Stark served to warn that the old rules (guest rights) were no longer being honored and that law had turned to lawlessness. Trust was gone from the dealings of men. Winter is coming. Yes, it is.

Btw, this was not the show writers who made this up. They said that GRRM told them about how hodor got his name and how his life was wrecked. The show writers were shocked by this. 28:22 So in the books there is no character called the Night King (at least not yet) but there is a legend of the Night’s King. He was the 13th lord commander of the Night’s Watch, and he fell in love with a woman who had pale white skin and starry blue eyes. He married her and declared himself the Night’s King and her his corpse bride. They ruled at the Nightfort for 13 years before they were defeated. Afterwards all records of his name were destroyed, but when Old Nan told Bran this story she said she believed the Night’s King was a Stark named Brandon.

    One interesting point about the drowning ritual - it's one of the things that make the Ironborn islanders such good pirates and sailors. They don't fear drowning because they've already drowned before. As such they tend to take risks that other sailors don't and they tend not to panic in naval combat.

      Maybe there's something I've forgotten but I don't think they make all of the islanders go through the drowning ritual (Theon was only "baptized" when he came home for the first time), just the kings.
      Still, if they do this every time they need a new king, I can't help but wonder how many wannabe kings they go through.
