      @@billduffe4472 20 pounds my ass. The weight cutting stories are just more myths that add to his mystique.
      Why did he never weigh more than 170 for any non title bout in his entire career? Why would he drain himself for fights he didn’t need to make weight for? Here’s the answer: he didn’t. He probably never weighed much more than that 170 in the ring.

    • @peacefulbliss1
      @peacefulbliss1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@billduffe4472 Yes, this is what I have always thought. I bet Gerald was a light heavyweight in those fights, definitely the second one. On the other hand, I've heard Jackson say he had to keep eating just to stay at middleweight and towards the end of his career actually went back down in weight. Never understood how fighters could make the weight, then add 10 or 20 pounds overnight. I mean they are already supposed to be in shape to begin with and train daily, so I never understood it.

    It's only seen as an early stoppage because Jackson wasn't totally out on his feet yet, but he was taking massive unanswered damage and had no way back into the fight. I would have thrown in the towel if I was in his corner and the referee didn't wave it off. No sense leaving it all out there for a fight you're not going to win - the technical edge was just a level above. Better to train hard and come back then to lose brain cells that you're never gonna get back.

    Having been there myself, you can appear lucid and have your wits about you immediately after a stoppage, but that is only because the intense pressure of having someone beating down on you has been halted. After taking a good shot or shots your reaction time is not the same and you can't see the punches coming and you know you are in trouble when don't feel them. Look at Jackson he was all of the above. Big respect to both fighters but that stoppage had to happen when it did.

    I rewatch this at least once a year. Master-class fight, of course, but maybe my favorite thing is . . . no ringside commentary. I wish all fights on TH-cam had a no-commentary option, where you can still hear the punches and the noise of the crowd.

    I'm a very big fan of Jackson but he relied too much on his power punches, didn't even try to jab his way in and tired himself with big misses. McCallum on the other hand fought properly, jabbed ducked punches and prepared his power punches better.

    What impressed me is how McCallum was taking big shots in the first round, but still had the courage and awareness to attack the body. He was getting hit with hard shots but not the first one in a combo, usually the 3rd or 4th which wasn't as hard. Then he clipped Jackson and it was pretty much over.

    Jackson was suitably menacing, and probably would have steamrolled 99% of junior-middleweights that night, but McCallum was brilliant, as usual: cool, controlled, granite chin, adaptive, slamming the body, then unleashing that first lightning 1-2, then those sustained body-head combinations--beautiful.

    On paper McCallum was vulnerable to a guy like Jackson. He was not the type of fighter who can just stay away and box he liked to stay inside and mix it up so he was going to get hit especially with right hands. Also a guy who throws a lot to the body is opening up his head to get hit.
    McCallum just had the better chin. He got stunned a couple of times but took those punches and then when he had Jackson hurt he poured it on and got him out of there.
