It’s okay to be afraid. You should be. We are not united. A country divided is a frightening place.
You’ve been told that the other side hates you, that they want to destroy the ideals you hold most dear. They say the other side wants to oppress you, or take what you have. They tell you the other side wants to deny you your potential, baring you from achievements that should be within your reach. They tell you the other side is to blame for all life’s problems.
Both sides do.
Whether it’s a politician, tv reporter, journalist, or even twitterer, when US politics is involved, they always blame the other side.
Convenient, isn’t it?
It’s almost like neither side wants their supporters to consider the actions of their own party. Why consider retrospection when you’ve been told it’s the other sides fault?
Denial is a powerful thing. It allows us to believe a truth that is dear to us, one we don’t want to give up even as it slips away. We want to believe someone is on our side. Someone with power. We want to know that the choices that will impact our lives are being made by people we trust, people who understand our problems and how to fix them. We want to believe it so badly, that even when life gets worse instead of better, we convince ourselves that our side wasn’t at fault. Denial is a powerful thing.
Is it so hard to consider that both sides are at fault? Is it not strange that while we the people bicker amongst ourselves, those who turned us against each other live lives of luxury? Is it impossible to believe that those in power have pointed at the other side to deflect you from their own unfulfilled promises. When will we realize that problems have never been solved by casting blame?
I’m afraid. I’m afraid that the truth doesn’t matter anymore. That responsibility is a concern of the past. That people are only capable of anger and hate. That compassion is dead. I’m afraid that those who should be uniting us, are instead using all their power to divide us.
But most of all, I’m afraid that we’re alone, and no ones on our side. No ones looking out for our greater good. No one cares that our lives are getting worse. Im afraid that they know the problems we are facing, but aren’t willing to make the change. That they are willing to let us suffer as long as they have a life of excess.
If you feel the same, maybe instead of looking to the other side, pointing fingers and shirking responsibility, take a closer look at those in power. Look at the actions of those who actually have power over your life. Consider the possibility that those on the other side have the same ideals as you, at least on the issues that truly matter. That the other side is human, just like you. That there never really have been sides, just one corrupt nation divided by greed and ignorance.
We need to put aside our differences, and remember that life is not a game. There are no winners and losers. There are only people. People who want to live comfortable, healthy lives. Parents who want their children to have a life filled with opportunities greater than their own. We need to agree to disagree on the side issues, and focus on working together to find solutions to the greater problems that plague this country. We need compassion. We need to care about the well being of our fellow Americans, acknowledging their problems even if we don’t share them, and supporting them in finding solutions.
But first we must accept responsibility for the state of this once great country. We put those people in power, and allowed them to shape this country into what it is today. Both sides must take equal responsibility for that failure. Both sides must hold their officials accountable. For so long they’ve told us it’s right vs left, when all along it was People vs Power. I guess that’s why we the people have been losing...
