  • The Rhône Glacier slides downhill 35m a year, though could be seen at speed along this original Glacier Express Furka Oberalp rail route. Climate change caused 10m uphill retreat per year for many decades, today slowed by UV-proof blankets. The 15km Furka Base Tunnel now accelerates express trains by eliminating the climb over the Furka Pass, which incidentally this film captures but is also featured in James Bond movie Goldfinger; look out for the zig zag switchbacks, location of car chase and sniper scenes.
The high pass route has been preserved by the DFB Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway reopening in 1982, expanding to serve Realp in Uri through to Oberwald in Valais as recently as 2010.
Paul Russenberger voices narration from 1999 to accompany this original 1978 cine film.

0:30 They are a bit late for that, but the might be the first four part sets running on rack rail
The first one might have been the old Schöllenen Railway BCFt4 30/ later FO ABFt4s 4191, which was converted in 1942 to work with the new BCFhe 2/4 41.
And in the 50s and 60s quite a few railways ordered driving cars for older motorcars like the ARB and WAB or whole pushpull sets like the JB.
The oldest instance of a push pull set in switzerland was on a rackrailway too, the Martigny Chatelard Railway had them from the beginning in 1905. But those were only used on the adhesion section

Very interesting thanks for your contribution to the archive. Yes, difficult to trace, I'm impressed with your expertise, perhaps www.pospichal.net/lokstatistik/36515-schb.htm and www.blechundguss.ch/fileadmin/user_upload/download/Ferro-Suisse_SchB_Steuerwagen.pdf give clues.
