  • In this Video I talk about the history of Kobolds. From their start as Cercopes and Cabeiri in ancient Greece where they fought Hercules. To their gnomish and trickster roots in modern Germany. I end by showing how the modern dog like Kobolds and Lizard or dragon like Kobolds exist. Find out how 1st edition D&D and 2nd Edition DND established Kobolds before 3rd Edition split them off. With a point going to World of Warcraft and Sword Art Online for their Kobolds. There is also a little bit at the end where I describe how the Enoss Kobolds differ and what I did to them. And if you are reading this why not consider Subscribing to the King of Candor?

    In basic D&D sets, Kobolds definitely fall into the dog like category.

      Yeah back then they definitely had a more doglike look but they made them more draconic as they wanted to give them something unique.

    In my DnD campaign Kobold's are treated more like mischievous children. They live in human cities and do a lot of unwanted labor for the most part. They are treated ok for the most part it's just that they need an eye on them at all times because they are more a threat to themselfs then others around them.

    Kobolds is the German word for goblin (and possibly its etymological root).
    The link to the Greek spirits is treated as still speculative rather than fact. They could just as well be evolutions of local Celtic and Germanic spirits (eg, dwarves), since we already have precedents for comparable spirits in those cultures long preceding such strong Greek or Roman influence. It also seems to a relatively universal concept; similar creatures are described in Asia, Pre-Columbian American, and African cultures.
    The covering of their development in modern fiction is a different subject, though. It is really cool to see that angle covered.

    • @kid9893
      @kid9893  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad you liked the covering. I know the word is German but we do see the Greeks using Koboloi which is very close.

    • @MenschWerdeWesentlich
      @MenschWerdeWesentlich ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It being close doesn’t necessarily mean anything. There simply is no real consensus yet, just different possible etymologies. In this field qualifiers like “likely” or “may” are present in so many etymologies and should be taken very seriously. In many cases we just don’t know and might never know for sure. Unsatisfactory for a layman, but simple reality for the experts, which I don’t consider myself one of.

    In my homebrew settings I use kobolds as essentially derivative dragonborn. I borrow a bit from the Dragonlance lore for drakonians which are crafted by performing a ritual over a dragon egg that converts them into their humanoid form. Then Kobolds are essentially the offspring of dragonborn, seen as a lower degraded version of the race. I also have a large geographic area known as the Dragon Isles where the dragon-lords constantly battle with each other, so they try to capture the eggs of their opponents to create Dragonborn warriors to serve in their armies, and the kobolds make up the majority of the population, essentially worshipping their draconic ancestor as a god. Given the long life of dragons, it is entirely possible that they are worshipping their creator who is very literally present to them.

    • @kid9893

    hear about my take o Kobolds.
    in my world, gnomes are elemental spirits, small sprites of earth, rock and maybe sometimes plant life. kobold aer a corruption of gnomes by wyrd magic. sometimes a wild magic area can influence gnomes weird, or a mine isn't paying proper respect to the earth spirits and actually aer hurting them. or worse, they unearth an ancient dragon burial, the magic of the dragons being so strong it twists the natural spirits around it, turning the gnomes into kobolds, with the kobolds trying to replicate themselves usign the dragon bones or even wors,e trying to revive the creature to worship it.

    • @kid9893
