5 Ton on the Job! Big Bus Conversion Stuck in the Sand!

  • We are On the Road Again, this time to recover a Big Bus and trailer stuck in the Sand. Four different towing companies had responded and none were able to get it pulled out. So with a few decades of experience and the right tool for the job we were able to just hook up and pull the bus out without breaking a sweat. We added some bonus footage at the end. Stuff we have not put together yet. We have had somewhere around 25 calls since I posted the last video on May 24th. Hopefully we will get some time to catch up and get them all posted. If not we will save them for a rainy day. Thanks for coming along for the ride and Thanks for Watching Casey

    Thanks for the video and the humor, nice to hear Mr. Randy's laugh. You always go so much farther to help people than 99% of other tow companies. Not just pulling her out but helping her load up her stuff, hooking the bus up for her, getting the bus started, fixing the crappy hitch and etc. Nice to see it all done without drama or pomp and circumstance. Casey if you watch videos check out Sumter Wrecker sometime; he is like you just a calm voice telling customers "don't worry we will get you out" , Thanks again for the video.

      They should have a heap of Casey's business cards at the park office to hand out, to anyone planning on pulling off the pavement, most certainly to any big rigs as the odds would not be in ones favour as per the sinking bus demo and pulling a trailer to boot. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the staff at the park gates take bets when they see certain rigs come though as to if they will end up needing to call for a tow.

    Sorry , even though the 5 ton was perfect for this job where it stayed on the hard packed gravel road, I don't think we've seen it in blow sand yet and I am a bit dubious about it's capabilitys in that medium. Can't wait to be convinced that the 5 ton is as capable as it is cool with a rescue where both vehicles are in that blow sand. Lol I always enjoy the ride.👍

    • @CaseysOffRoadRecovery
      @CaseysOffRoadRecovery  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I use it in the sand quite often and it does and excellent job. I have pulled out dozens of motorhomes, buses, boats etc. watch more of my video's. If the 5 ton isn't the tool for the job I also have the Noddy, a loader, a skid steer, multiple jeeps and a whole arsenal of recovery rigs at my disposal.

      @@CaseysOffRoadRecovery Casey, love the channel and didn't mean to get your hackles up. Im just another keyboard recovery guy but with a little more of an analytical mind than most, so I really pay attention to your techniques and watch how the equipment reacts under the different circumstances. All vehicles have their strengths and weakness and thought I had spotted a weakness in the 5 ton, yet I've only seen you use it a few times where it really had to work, so admittedly a very small data sampling. I admit that the Noddy is my favorite, that thing is just awsome, such a unique vehicle. It just needs a little better protection for the operator. I think if there was a road to the moon the Noddy could handle it. I will of course keep watching and continue to enjoy the ride. Thanks

    Yep when I used to be in the tow business we had a 50 ton drag line yarding winch in the deck of the truck. If you had one of those with the yankum rope and front winch you’d really have some pulling rig.

      I have a 20k all re furbished I need to get mounted up as well as a deck mount 80 for behind the cab, not sure if I will mount it or not. Warn is sending me out a 20 K industrial winch with long drum with 245 feet of cable.. thought I may mount that on the rear frame rail.

    • @powderriver2424
      @powderriver2424 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@CaseysOffRoadRecovery The Warn industrial winch sounds like a good idea that might suit the truck better, also for your needs 245ft is a lot of wire rope it will give you plenty of flexibility. We used to drag up logging equipment from over embankments in the PacWest you needed all the pulling power you could get..Lol I hope you might do some short vids on you plans or additions to your truck and equipment. You have a good channel and I like watching very much since my form of entertainment is derived from TH-cam instead of real TV. Thank you.

    Equalising hitches are great, we had one on our old boat (16' towed by a car). US style trucks aren't common in Australia so not an option and not needed anyway.
    However, I'd never run an adjustable hitch as a permenant option. Emergency use only.

    I thought you were "stretching it" when you commented it was a 40 foot school bus you were on the way to rescue but nope, that is some school bus. Never had buses of that size around here in my rural area as it was hard enough to turn around the buses they did have in some awkward locations along the routes. That would have taken a pretty good yank to say the least from the jeep to pop that out, certainly a job for the 5 ton !. Casey, I am curious what tire pressures you run in the 5 ton given that you have to road it to locations, I bet you so wish you had a central tire inflation system on that beast to quickly adjust to its best low speed sand pressures.

    • @cdodge2996
      @cdodge2996 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the Army we never had a system that ever worked correctly! Just my experience, but they seem way too complicated and maintenance heavy, there's always a bad o ring...

    • @charlesb4267
      @charlesb4267 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cdodge2996 I've never had anything to do with inflation systems but in later years up here in Alberta in some logging area's where they haul logs out during the summer I am told they use systems like that to help support the weights off road while causing less damage or sinking and getting stuck for that matter. Now they even have such systems one can order grain trailers with ( I farm ) and had a custom hauler last year mention he had such a system on his unit. I haven't heard what issues they have but I believe he said its supposed to alert one if a wheel end is loosing too much pressure. With gadgets usually come potential problems though. Still though the concept is good, the rest ... well yeah, sounds like you got to experience that too !

    The water tank that was on this 5-ton was too big, but given how these sorts of trucks perform in soft sand, maybe some kind of smaller water tank for more ballast might not be a bad idea. Something perhaps a foot tall and the same footprint as the bed of the truck.

      As a retired school bus driver, I think the last thing I would want to do is have the responsibility of the care and maintenance of a bus. They don’t like the heat, they don’t come with tires that work well in anything less than paved roads, they get LOUSY miles per gallon.

    Is that in the same location of the tractor trailer was stuck a week or so ago? I know that you are somewhat used to the heat but yesterday was 104 degrees here in Sunnyside Washington. My evaporative cooler motor expired. At 6:30 pm went to Ace hardware and bought a new one for out garage hangout. I will need to remodel the wall where the last one was to get this one to fit. Always something to do on the property. What do you think about the pour in radiator head gasket fix juice? will it work for a while? I am just not familiar with that stuff for head gaskets. You do a great job and service. Thank you for taking me along for the ride.
