In this video we go over the visual culture of the Iberian Peninsula, well, at least all of it up to the time of the Conquest. It's a complicated history, Celti-Iberian, Roman, Visigothic, Muslim, and Early Modern. All of these styles blend together and are imported to the New World, so it's important to get them down when we start talking about Mexico and Peru in the 16th C.

I have listened to all of your lectures except for a few on modern art, most of them more than once I appreciate your very sincere efforts to identify the virtues of modern art. But I love medieval and classical art so much more. I can't wait for your next series of lectures. I do not begrudge your time off and sincerely hope that you are researching the modern alla prima and plein air painting movements. Warmest regards and thank you so much for sharing all of your scholarship and expertise. Your contributions to the art world are immeasurable!

A query: Did the native heritage part determine what Iberian elements were exported to the New World? Given all the options available in the Iberian tradition(s), did the interface with native pre-Columbian tradition filter what Iberian elements were chosen?

Were the Visigoths really "barbarians"? They were heretics (Arians) and anti-semitic (which is pretty barbaric, of course) but by the standards of the time they were pretty civilised.
