Brits and Spanish did have more points in common when we start looking deeper in history... Sadly, when you decided to cut ties with Rome the relations really went south maybe too much and even out of proportion at times... Hope we can get along better and reconcile some historical issues. As for England/Britain place in european culture we tend to think that, just as her iconic climate conditions, it is kind of a mysterious land of seclusion and mist... also doing her own thing. The fact that you travel the world out of that "secrecy" is also an oddity of history (I guess that is your norman/viking component playing out)

@@antoniovarela4444 Portugal should have never got independent from the Hispanic Universal Monarchy, the single Iberian Kingdom would have ruled the world for another three centuries at least. You would have not lost your empire in Asia, and you certainly recovered Brazil in the 17th century from the Netherlands thanks to the Spanish King Philip the Fourth, at least be thankful. But obviously, keep on thinking the way you do, it only represents an inferiority complex.

My first response to you was a lot less cordial than this one. The TH-cam algorithm wouldn't allow it to stay posted so as not to upset the delicate sensibilities of those such yourself, I guess. So, let me just say this. I'm Portuguese and proud of my people's history and also, by extension, the history of our Spaniard brothers. We didn't do anything that others didn't and/or wouldn't have done given the opportunity. But I very much doubt you go around telling Muslims/Arabs, for example, they should be ashamed of their people having engaged in things like conquest. That being said, go fuck yourself. Pound your guilt tripping and shaming horseshit up your ass, okay? Take care and God bless.

The Spanish Empire was not a colonial empire such as the English, French or Dutch, but on the contrary, it was the last empire of the ancient type, closer to what Rome or Greece were. 300-400 years of domain based on miscegenation, alphabetization and conversion of different peoples; construction of universities, cathedrals and cities worldwide; a huge cultural and artistic explotion; deliberation of new phylisophic, teologic and juridic debates in human history (like f.e., if all humans were equal); discoverments that changed the conception of the world; opening of new shipping routes; creation of an undefeated infantry for 2 centuries; expansion of the Hispanic culture throughout the Atlantic and Pacific ocean (called "the spanish lake" at that time) as Rome did throughout the Mediterranean... All of this, in a world as big as the one we know today, but using a technology from 5 centuries ago.
From there onward, european empires had a colonial model based on mercantilism, slavery, and large-scale production, creating factories or plantations in overseas possessions, instead of a civilizing reproduction of their society. The former were a global market, the latter a global kingdom. European empires shouldnt be generalized by the fact of having overseas territories, because not all of them were the same.

To add a couple of notes :
    - Before the Iberians, between the 12th century and the 5th century BC, on the south coast of the Iberian Peninsula, at the mouth of the Guadalquivir river existed a Civilization called Tartessos, who where influenced by the Phoenicians and later by the Greek who were stablished in the Eastern Coast of the peninsula.
    - When the romans first arrived to Spain, apart from the Vacones in the northern part, there were 3 more tribes in the basque territories, in today's Cantabria there where the Cantabri, in today's Asturias there where the Astures who formed the kingdom of Asturias after some centuries, and in today's Galicia. After de Cantabrian wars (29-19 BC), all the tribes of the North, except the vascones, disappeared.
    - In today's Portugal, there where the Lusitanians, where influenced by the celts like the tribes of the north, and fought against the carthaginians (208-201 BC) and the romans (193 - 139 BC)
    - When the arabics invaded Spain, the northern part of Spain, except Galicia remained uninvaded

@Igor Mateus Literally almost none of Portuguese history is included here, this is meant to be a video focused on Spain, of course some pre-medieval history is shared...but that's it

I'm excited to watch the story of my ancestors. I'm Mexican American descended from every line of Spanish royalty before 1400s until Enrique II. Such a neat experience to dig through my family tree as you mention someone in it. Thank you for making this!
