This show was one that will go down in the record books as one of the greatest. Never before had we seen Archie's softener side, until that final scene. Likewise, in the Archie Bunker's Place episode titled "Archie Alone"(a two part episode), the scene where Archie finds Edith's slipper and breaks down. He truly loved his "dingbat", and it was such a heart wrenching scene.
All in the family was never cancelled. It transformed into Archie bunker's Place. that show lasted into 1983. The title of this video is totally misleading.

Mickey Rooney turned down the role of Archie because he didn't think the show would last. Genius that he was, Norman Lear held off on introducing George Jefferson until Sherman Hemsley was available.

I grew up watching All in the Family. I didn't miss an episode. I get choked up thinking about some of the episodes to this day. It was the best. It will never be duplicated. What an era.
I loved the show and my husband and I looked forward to it weekly airing. We really enjoyed the humor. Those memories are so wonderful. Back then the humor was wholesome and refreshing.

The show wasn't the same without Edith, Gloria and Mike so ending the show was the right decision. Archie bunker's place should have never happened with Edith passed away although archie and Stephanie had chemistry and brought out the soft side of Archie Bunker it just didn't feel right with Gloria returning divorced and a single mom
Jean Stapleton never appreciated how important her character Edith was. Edith wasn't that naive. In one episode she tells Archie she figured he didn't get his Christmas bonus because he made a mistake at his job. Gloria and Meathead never figured it out. They were quick to make Archie out to be a liar and embarrass him. Edith influenced Archie to do things.
Some of my favorites were: the cling peaches in heavy syrup one, the one where the TV is broken and the family runs around in vain to see Arch on the CBS News singing then President Nixon's praises - when they finally find a set, guess who preempted him at the last minute?, the swastika on the door (the Boy Scout was played by Jean Stapleton's real life son John Putsch), when Arch thinks he ate poisoned mushrooms, when Arch thinks he contracted infectious hepatitis from drinking out of a pitcher of beer than an infected friend drank from, when a computer in error declares Arch dead, the one where the German butcher who had the hots for Edith introduces the Bunkers to his new fiancee (also played by Jean Stapleton in a dual role but credited as "Giovanni Putsch", using the Italian for Jean and her real life married name) and many others.
Carroll O'Conner was really upset with CBS cancelling Archie Bunker's Place. He really wanted to give the series full closure. He probably had in mind one more season and then a big finale.
The greatest show of all time!! Great cast!!! So in sync with each other. It kicked down the tv world to give us so much! So many great episodes and heartfelt episodes. Carroll O’Connor! My favourite Hollywood actor! I miss him! Such a one of a kind man.

Carroll O'Connor pushed for it since he thought it would be too confusing to the audience to have Jean Stapleton appear only occasionally - IMO I think he felt threatened by her and wanted to have the spin off all to himself. However, they made Edith's death in her sleep offstage from a stroke - that's since Jean wanted to have nothing to do with taping a death scene (most likely since she was a Christian Scientist - adherents of that faith do not believe in the true existence of evil, illness or death).

Carroll was right in that it would’ve been difficult coming up with excuses for Edith not being around if the character was still alive. I have never seen the ending. I remember one scene about having to change a diaper. For tv back then it was a no no to show a baby that was nude. I guess it was right about that. That show would help people deal with things in life that was real. Tv doesn’t make shows like that any more. I think that as far back as tv started, there is not much else new to show that would shock people.
Edith's departure took place during the sequel to All in The Family, Archie's Place. Archie's Place ran for four seasons. All in The Family ended after nine seasons and became Archie's Place.
When all in the family first aired was only 10years Old my mom fall I was to young to watch it When I was In my room in my bad I had to be in bad at 9 I had shool the next day but I would hear the theme song from my room thoughs were the days from my room my mom loved this show I would sneak out of my room ànd watched it from the hall way you see the TV from there My mom finally let me watch it when I turned 12, it was a great 👍 show 😅 I was sad to come to a end when Edith passed away it was not the same you really. needed for Archie to them together is what is what made the show funny it's like Loral and hardly with out hardey it would not work All In The family the greatest show at the time
Jean Stapleton said she left because there wasn't anywhere to go with the show. Norm took some convincing to go ahead and kill off the Edith character even after Ms Stapleton reminded him she hadn't been on the show for over a year.
Pretty sure the writers and cast thought season five was going to happen, otherwise the show would have gone out with a bang with a casting call and wrap-up party.
I’ve watched aitf since I was nine years old and I still laugh today as much as I did then Archie and Edith were like many of old neighbors I knew growing up Edith was good hearted helping anyone and Archie was good hearted in his own way although he’d gripe about it but he was lovable they don’t make shows like that anymore
I believe you are incorrect about Edith making limited appearances in the final season of All in The Family. She was throughout the final season. It wasn't until the spin-off Archie Bunker's Place that she made more guest like appearances.
It would have helped alot if you'd shown the few seconds of the poignant moments of the finale without commentary because I missed that episode. Never saw it.
The show didn't end. All in the Family basically changed its name to Archie Bunkers Place and the first season was when Jean Stapleton left. She was on season 1 six times but was in all season 9 episodes!
That’s not true. Norman Lear didn’t want to do the episode where Edith dies, it was Jean’s idea. They where talking over the phone and Jean said something like, “you know, Edith is just a made up character” There was a long pause on the other end Jean thought to herself, “Oh my God, I hurt his feelings. But then Norman came back and said, To me, she’s not. That’s how it happened.
Interesting... And some excellent points... But rather flawed in facts... Most of your facts are technically true, but the lines are blurred as they get mixed together. Jean Stapleton/Edith did NOT appear in fewer episodes of "All In The Family"; she was fully active in the show, and appeared in virtually every single episode right up to the end ("Too Good Edith" - which was NOT a guest appearance by Stapleton; she was still the co-star of the regular cast). It didn't "go out with a bang" because it was not technically the show's "finale" and was never heralded as such. After the conclusion of Season 9, the show transitioned seamlessly into "Archie Bunker's Place)" for its 10th season. Edith WAS seen less in the first season of "Archie Bunker's Place", which is when SHE (not Norman Lear -- as is much documented) opted to have her character "killed off". Otherwise, the transition between "All in the Family" and "Archie Bunker's Place" was very smooth and uneventful. There was no big hoopla between the end of one and the beginning of the other. It was unfortunate that neither show got an actual finale send-off, especially since it was such a significant part of our consciouness for 13 years! I think the last episode should have been Archie Bunker going to bed the next thing you know he wakes up he lists his next time him Edith and a girl take a trip to go visit his daughter and Meathead
This is such a great show, because it teaches either side of the aisle not to take itself so seriously. This would be great for our culture today, but it would be immediately cancelled for being "too offensive." No one knows how to laugh anymore.
The "Singleton" mistake was enough to make me quit watching. Her surname was "Stapleton, " which you'd know if you were a fan. 1:58 is where I quit the video. All likes you get are not justified. It's not hard to get people's names right.
O'Connor was an extraordinary actor. To go from Archie Bunker to a Mississippi sheriff-and be convincing doing it--takes great acting. Edith was wonderful. Reiner was type cast. He was and is nothing but a brainless meathead. He was then, and remains one to this day.
I really liked this show but Archie was a most unlikable character throughout the series, with very few tender moments, which in the real world would probably not be considered sincere. Hard to understand why Edith loved him but then again, it's the part written for her.

It was my grandmother's favorite show. She looked a lot like Edith when she was younger, too.

There’s so many I like .. Edith and Archie’s 25th.. Gloria’s miscarriage and game night at the bunkers. Archie’s brief encounter so many.

Edith's departure took place during the sequel to All in The Family, Archie's Place. Archie's Place ran for four seasons. All in The Family ended after nine seasons and became Archie's Place.
When all in the family first aired was only 10years Old my mom fall I was to young to watch it When I was In my room in my bad I had to be in bad at 9 I had shool the next day but I would hear the theme song from my room thoughs were the days from my room my mom loved this show I would sneak out of my room ànd watched it from the hall way you see the TV from there My mom finally let me watch it when I turned 12, it was a great 👍 show 😅 I was sad to come to a end when Edith passed away it was not the same you really. needed for Archie to them together is what is what made the show funny it's like Loral and hardly with out hardey it would not work All In The family the greatest show at the time
I just watched this episode a few days ago. I was in tears.
Jean Stapleton said she left because there wasn't anywhere to go with the show. Norm took some convincing to go ahead and kill off the Edith character even after Ms Stapleton reminded him she hadn't been on the show for over a year.
Pretty sure the writers and cast thought season five was going to happen, otherwise the show would have gone out with a bang with a casting call and wrap-up party.
I’ve watched aitf since I was nine years old and I still laugh today as much as I did then Archie and Edith were like many of old neighbors I knew growing up Edith was good hearted helping anyone and Archie was good hearted in his own way although he’d gripe about it but he was lovable they don’t make shows like that anymore
Carroll O'Connor said he would not go on unless Edith was killed off. Sally Struthers did the spinoff Gloria. POOR.

I believe you are incorrect about Edith making limited appearances in the final season of All in The Family. She was throughout the final season. It wasn't until the spin-off Archie Bunker's Place that she made more guest like appearances.
It would have helped alot if you'd shown the few seconds of the poignant moments of the finale without commentary because I missed that episode. Never saw it.
The show didn't end. All in the Family basically changed its name to Archie Bunkers Place and the first season was when Jean Stapleton left. She was on season 1 six times but was in all season 9 episodes!
I loved All in the Family. But, I wasn't too much of a fan of Archie Bunker's place.

That’s not true. Norman Lear didn’t want to do the episode where Edith dies, it was Jean’s idea. They where talking over the phone and Jean said something like, “you know, Edith is just a made up character” There was a long pause on the other end Jean thought to herself, “Oh my God, I hurt his feelings. But then Norman came back and said, To me, she’s not. That’s how it happened.
Well, I would've loved to see AITF last a bit longer given the popularity it had both in the U.S. and in my homeland Australia ❤❤❤

Interesting... And some excellent points... But rather flawed in facts... Most of your facts are technically true, but the lines are blurred as they get mixed together. Jean Stapleton/Edith did NOT appear in fewer episodes of "All In The Family"; she was fully active in the show, and appeared in virtually every single episode right up to the end ("Too Good Edith" - which was NOT a guest appearance by Stapleton; she was still the co-star of the regular cast). It didn't "go out with a bang" because it was not technically the show's "finale" and was never heralded as such. After the conclusion of Season 9, the show transitioned seamlessly into "Archie Bunker's Place)" for its 10th season. Edith WAS seen less in the first season of "Archie Bunker's Place", which is when SHE (not Norman Lear -- as is much documented) opted to have her character "killed off". Otherwise, the transition between "All in the Family" and "Archie Bunker's Place" was very smooth and uneventful. There was no big hoopla between the end of one and the beginning of the other. It was unfortunate that neither show got an actual finale send-off, especially since it was such a significant part of our consciouness for 13 years! It could be said that "All in the Family" was likely the greatest sitcom of all time. Thanks for posting this!

This is such a great show, because it teaches either side of the aisle not to take itself so seriously. This would be great for our culture today, but it would be immediately cancelled for being "too offensive." No one knows how to laugh anymore.

Actually AITF was the watered down version of the UK show Till Death Do us Part. AITF should have ended when Gloria and the Meathead left the show.
O'Connor was an extraordinary actor. To go from Archie Bunker to a Mississippi sheriff-and be convincing doing it--takes great acting. Edith was wonderful. Reiner was type cast. He was and is nothing but a brainless meathead. He was then, and remains one to this day.

I really liked this show but Archie was a most unlikable character throughout the series, with very few tender moments, which in the real world would probably not be considered sincere. Hard to understand why Edith loved him but then again, it's the part written for her.
