About Ronald Kanne
Ronald is a wood turner in the Netherlands. He makes commissioned work and his own free work. And every week turns out to be a little too short to get all the work done... He also runs a webshop for other wood turners. It's called: www.dehoutdraaierij.nl. This webshop is in Dutch, English and German. The website that contains his own work is called www.ronaldkanne.nl. You will also find these links in the video.

en zo is het! :-)
Love the interaction between you and your wife. Great mix of video and music.
Thanks for your videos. I am learning lots.
Hi Guy, I also love the interaction between me and my wife. I wish she could film as well as Lies! :-)
Excellent video ... thank you! And a very nice shop also.
Thank you Gerald!
Whooee....that thread cutter is nice but more expensive than my first car! Maybe a Christmas present from someone who loves me very much?
You sir are amazing at how easy you make everything look
I'll take that as a compliment Bill, thank you! :-)
one more great video Ronald!
Thank you!
Thanks for explaining things as you go. Most of the Yankees that do wood turning feel the need to talk an hour for every thirty seconds of work they do. I love watching both you and Ashley Harwood. You both just get the work done.
Well that is the first time somebody says to me: "I love watching both you and Ashley Harwood" Probably the last time also, so i enjoy this moment for a while...😊 thank you George!
Ik vind hem weer prachtig ronald
Dank je Henk!
Really enjoyed that!
very nice work !!!!!!! Great material.
I love your camera person.
@@drains6903 me too...🙂
Once again, a beautiful job sir!
Your skill amazes me, and thank you.
Sycamore is a beautiful wood! Thanks for showing off its beautiful grain in this project.
What a good teacher, and a pleasant helper
Gerry
What a good reaction and so pleasant to hear! :-) thank you Gerry!
Great video, beautiful wood.
Another smashing video. Always a pleasure to see you at work (play), many thanks 👍
I really enjoyed this video and the box is very beautiful! Your dog almost stole the show, so well behaved. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. A new subscriber from Canada.
Thank you Ronald for a great demonstration of the Simon Hope thread cutting jig and a super job on the box. Terry
I just found your channel. Great video work, great wood turning, very instructional. You now have a new subscriber in East Texas, USA.
Thanks Ronald for an enjoyable video! I fully agree for the London plane.
I was interested in seeing the Simon Hope jig in operation (that's how I found your video), and you gave me much more.
Glad to hear that John! Thank you!
Danke Heinz! Wann du sagst nächste Mal oval Gewinde sag ich dir schon: "Leider...Herr Hintermann" :-)
Thank you!
you're welcome Andrew! :-)
Verry nice explained
I thought that was one of the Chefware kit threading jigs, but looks like one you make yourself. I think I like your pop up better than the pivot.
I am surprised when people make threaded boxes this big, especially in side/bowl grain. I took some threaded boxes from humid Oregon to central California, and some in the 1 1/2 inch diameter size would still open, but barely. I would expect wood movement to make that one move too much for threads to work.... I do love the quarter sawn plane/sycamore trees. Beautiful medullary rays in it!
Thank you Robohippy. When you make threads you always have to add a little play. Also I used a fairly coarse thread to alow that play in crossgrain wood... but you have experienced that already...🙂
Oh... and btw... the threading jig i used is made by Simon Hope...
We are thinking of calling our "Easy Core" Ronald! :-)
Well... you have my number... 😀
Great woork love it watching ,what kind of wax did you use please it looks amazing thanks
Thank you Joey, the wax i used here was Woodwax 22 from Chestnut...
Prachtig :)
Hi Ronald. So firstly thank you for allowing me into your family life for a very relaxing, enjoyable and informative 45 minutes. I am a beginner and have so many questions... but I will just ask one. As a beginner should I learn to thread chase before buying Simon's 'cheating' machine? It looks like some good (Crown or Sorby) thread chasers (16tpi) are going to cost around £150. Simons 'Complete Thread Kit' is an eye watering £495 - or around £350 if you didn't get all the bells and whistles. So... for a weekend turner who is fascinated by box making - learn to chase the thread or just dive in with the Ferrari? Also Ronald - On Simons demo of his thread jig he leaves his piece on the lathe and has his cutter is on the jig? The opposite to you? Why?
Anyway, if you have time for an opinion on this (I sort of feel the same about chisels versus carbide cutters... but am sticking with chisels for the moment) I would be grateful. Thank you again.
Hi David. If make boxes for fun xhoose for hand chasing. It is more difficult but once you get the hang of it it is much more fun, almost Zen to do.. althought there are some limitations (grain direction, wood type)... in my webshop i have the thread chasers from Jan Hovens. He knows what he is talking about and that shows in his thread chasers. The cost € 75,-/set.
I think you are mistaken when you say that i do it the other way around then Simon...
Grtz
Ronald
@@ronaldkanne You are completely right... you both do it the same way! In my defence we have had a pandemic, there's a small Russian psycho on the loose and the world generally seems f**ked... all of which I am blaming for my poor memory. I am heading to your website now! Thank you for your advice.
@@ronaldkanne Sorry Ronald... what pitch would you recommend for a beginner - probably doing boxes of a similar (or smaller) size to your video. I need a relief scraper? And a hook tool?
@@davidbuchan2224 i'd suggest 16 tpi for a start. Bigger teeth is way more difficult to start. A relief scraper you do need. But you can make it yourself also, and you only use it for 2 seconds... i never use the hook tool. Jan does, me never. It goes very well without...
Super hermoso
I would love to know where you got the light that goes on your tool rest to shine into the box you were hollowing. Also the flexible dust hood. I'm really enjoying your videos. I've already subscribed to your channel. Thanks.
Cindy Drozda.
great job you dont over power with the music like a lot of them do and can i ask what you did with the stick
Which stick do you mean Goodin?
the stick you combed your hair with lol@@ronaldkanne
@@dondeere I lost it about 34 years ago...🤣
In this video you attached a small light to the tool rest. It look to be LED/magnetic. I have looked all over the web trying to find something similar. Do you recall where you acquired it? Thank you very much. By the way, wonderful work!!
this a great video on box making. I would like to know where a person in the US can buy the Simon Hope Jig ? I have yet to find a source
HI lester, I think Simon doesn't sell in the USA, but i'm sure there are other manufacterers making something like it that you'll like...
Its quite refreshing to watch you turn without a face mask or a faceshield. Great video. Just bought a threader..
Make some nice boxes with it! Good luck!
Nice work. Could you vacuum chuck it to take the bottom off?
Sure you can!
Hallo @Ronald. Geweldige filmpjes!
Geweldige techniek!
Great video, you have wonderful ideas. Where did you find that small light.
Hi Paul, i found that light in my webshop...🙂

Excellent piece Ronald beautiful wood, I’m interested to know why you used 3.5mm pitch thread?
Hi Trevor, the 3,5 pitch spindle was in the jig... That is why :-). But also for explaining I thought it was good to use a big pitch. I also have a 16 TPI and a 10 TPI spindle. If not for the video I would have chosen a 10 TPI iI think... Does that answer your question?
@@ronaldkanne Yes, thank you
Modern threads (on pill-bottles, for example) have 3 or 4 parallel threads, so that only a quarter turn will tightly fit the lid...
Is there a way to achieve this with a jig like yours in wood?
I'm asking because I have a very old similar ebony box with 3 threads and no idea how to do it!
Hi Kaley, if you turn a lid a quarter turn it has 4 thread "entrances". If you use this tool, you make 1 entrance. So at least 1 turn must be made... hope that answers your question?
@@ronaldkanne I think so, so to cut 4 threads needs 4 cuts each having 4x the pitch... I must look into how the pitch is varied... and find a trick to get accurate quarter turn for the entries! I like a challenge...
What happens to the fit of the lid when the wood moves after the wood drying out or the movement of the wood tension.
The wood was dry when I made the box. That is important of course. Still, when the wood is completely dry it also will move a bit. So you have to count with that when you cut the thread... don't make it too tight...
Where did you get the little light for the lathe
Hi Scott, they are on my website...

But if you are from America, this is probably not the answer you were looking for...

8:41 wat is dat voor een lampje?
Die is erg handig
Hoi Ralph.
Do you ever use sanding sealer?
Every now and then yes... but not specially with threads...
You made a side-grain box, Ronald.
I have almost the same jig, and having serius trouble with threading a long grain box. The thread simply breaks, even with CA-glue.
Have no problems with side-grain boxes. Could you demonstrate theading in a long-grain box ?
Hi Kimspur, I will... one day... I can only guess what is going wrong of course... My first thought is make sure that the cutter is sharp, dense wood, light cuts... I'd say can't go wrong... :-)
What type of collet do you use for your cutter ? Please
My name is Gerry
Hi Gerry, it is a colletchuck. dehoutdraaierij.nl/en/shop/accessories/alle-accessoires-en/collet-chuck/
Hallo Ronald,

Where can I order that thread cutter?
Hi Mary, i must say I don't know if anybody is selling outside Europe... it is made by Simon Hope in the UK...
Where did you get that little light from?
I ordered them on my own website...🙂

the stick you combed your hair with lol
Love your videos, Ronald! I'm curious about your folding ruler. How long is it and what brand is it?
It is a typical Dutch thing. 1 meter long and made by Sola. We call it "Duimstok". :-) You can find it here: dehoutdraaierij.nl/shop/overig/meten/duimstok-1-meter/
Surely not a toy for hobby turners 😞
Well, actualy... it is also for hobby turners! But you are probably refering to the price?
How did you guess 😁
