    Score video of Schumann's Rhenish symphony. Text by Blair Johnston.
    Schumann's "Rhenish" Symphony, the Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 97, is so called because it was written in the fall of 1850 during the composer's tenure as conductor at Düsseldorf on the famous Rhine river. In a letter to the publisher N. Simrock in 1851 Schumann claimed that the history and spirit of that noble river and its people were running through his mind as he composed the work. The Symphony was less successful at its premiere in February 1851 (under the composer's direction) than had his two previous symphonic premieres had been. Although third in number, the "Rhenish" is actually Schumann's final entry in the genre, the forthcoming Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120, having been originally composed in 1841.
    The heroic main theme of the opening Lebhaft is laced with hemiolas that transform its basic 3/4 time into larger bars of 3/2. A second theme in G minor is offered by the oboe and clarinet before being taken over by the violins. The astute listener will have noticed a keen similarity between the rhythmic outline of Schumann's main theme and that of the main theme to the opening movement of Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 3 in F major. This similarity is enhanced even further during the transition to the second theme in the recapitulation, when the figure is played out with precisely the same intervallic content as the later Brahms melody -- just one example of the deep and abiding influence Schumann's music had on his younger associate. Schumann incorporates the jovial Rheinweinlied (Rhine-wine Song) into the Scherzo, which, as in the Second Symphony, appears as the second rather than the more traditional third movement. The solid C major foundation is shaken up briefly by the A minor Trio (although, rather stubbornly, the bass continues to putter around on low C). Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the "Rhenish" Symphony is the interpolation of an extra movement. Marked Feierlich (Solemn), the movement originally carried the inscription, "in the manner of an accompaniment to a solemn ceremony." The Finale is a robust outburst (marked, like the first movement, Lebhaft) which recalls some of the main theme from the fourth movement before plunging into a final burst of joyful E flat.

      Along with the openings of Beethoven 5th symphony or Brahms 4th symphony, it belongs to the top tier of the best symphonic music ever written. I like to mention Elgar symphony 1 and Bruckner symphony 4, because they both have beautiful passages in the 1st movement, the whole movements deliver similar quality throughout.

    This is probably the most quintessential symphony for romantic era music. Especially the turn from the haunting and tragic 4th movement towards the proud and triumphant 5th movement, there's a sense of raw emotion and heroism throughout this symphony. I'm really shocked how underrated this work is.

      I hate to say it, but the film industry gained something when the world lost James Horner. He was a godawful hack. Even other composers that shamelessly stole, like John Williams, did so more artfully than him. At least when John ripped off Stravinsky, the mood and notes were altered enough to make it appropriate for the monotony of the desert, which fit the scene. Horner was so rarely original that he ended up copying himself on those occasions.

    The opening is like an explosive, life-affirming version of the opening of Beethoven's Eroica. Clearly the choice of Eb major for the 3rd symphony was an intentional homage to Beethoven. Likewise, Brahms would quote this movement in his own third symphony. The third movement here seems to have been inspired by the second movement of Beethoven's Pathetique. Brahms would quote 17:29 in the second movement of his third piano sonata.

    Never was sure how this legend started of Schumann being a bad orchestrator. Not as good as Mahler (who was probably the best ever), but even Mahler changed very little when he reorchestrated Schumann. Schumann uses a bit too much doubling in the winds, does not keep the "choirs" separate, it's a bit heavy-handed...but certainly not bad! Want to hear bad 19th century orchestration? The Chopin piano concertos...

    • @Sibethoven
      @Sibethoven 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Schumann and Mahler are from totally different period and it cannot be compared like that. But yes, I would say Schumann is not bad at all, just average, the standard average of early-mid romantic peripd austro germanic orchestration, similar to beethoven and brahms. So if someone consider schuamnn has bad orchestration, I would tell them, well, beethoven and brahms are at a similar level also. For Mahler, he is not the best orchestrator certainly, considering the era he lived in. His orchestration is not the most delicate indeed. Berlioz, Wagner, Richard Strauss, they are the best orchestrators.

    • @CalebRen
      @CalebRen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Sibethoven I'd say that Brahms was a much better orchestrator than Schumann. The Schumann symphonies are very dense, much more so than the Brahms symphonies. Brahms focused more on individual timbre, especially in the winds (see most of Brahms 4, Brahms 1 2nd movement, Brahms 3, Serenades).

    • @Sibethoven
      @Sibethoven 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CalebRen yea he should be doing better than schumann because his works are several decades after schumann. But i would say he just do a little bit better. His orchestration is extremely similar to schumann and not any better because he directly learns from schumann for writing for an orchestra. Brahms has a rough orchestration, he often groups the winds into unison, many doublings, just like schumann exactly. The examples you raised are some moments with solo winds with strings accompaniment, it doesnt help that the orchestration is still rough. Schumann has many similar examples also, ii of his 4th, iii of his 3rd, etc...but overall they are rough. Brahms does not use the orchestra to make any sound effect at all. And if you read the score, schumann is not doing any worse then composers from the same period (except for the genius like berlioz), but brahms is not doing so well in orchestration comparing with composers from his time (wagner, tchaikovsky, ). Imagine like brahms finished his 4th and it was like a 1850s symphony in the 1880s. You mentioned his 4th, but if you read the score, for the whole first movement most of the time all the woodwinds are playing the same voice😂😂. But several years later mahler already produced his 1st, and it sounds like there is a gap with several decades in between.

    • @dereksuszko728
      @dereksuszko728 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Sibethoven Dude what the hell are you on about? The quality of orchestration has nothing to do with the time period of a composer. There obviously have been progressive developments in technique but "later" does not mean "better." Mozart's Symphony 41 to name just one example is often cited as iconic orchestration and he was before anyone you mentioned. I am almost certain that nobody else (no matter what their opinion of Brahms) would ascribe to the idea that Brahms "didn't orchestrate well for his era but would have been considered good had he come earlier". That is just utter nonsense.
