  • Robert Schumann - Symphony no. 4 in D MInor, Opus 120 (1851)
Wolfgang Sawallisch conducting the Staatskapelle Dresden (1973)
    ------------------
This version, according to Clara Schumann, this was the only completed version of the symphony. It was sketched in 1841 and orchestrated 10 years later, in 1851. However, Johannes Brahms discovered that the 1841 'sketch' was actually orchestrated, but it's lighter in orchestration and has minor differences than in the 1851 version. Robert Schumann apparently heavily revised the symphony in 1851. Despite Clara's objections to publishing the 1841 version, Brahms still published it.

The 1st movement is perhaps my favorite Schumann piece. Tragic, expressive, mysterious, exhilarating...those rhythms and one of the best brief codas you will ever hear. that feeling of suppressed excitement is something Schumann does better than anybody else...and then when it bursts out it's as thrilling as anything in Beethoven.

I love the tempo Sawallisch takes in the piece. He gives the music a sense of forward momentum that I really enjoy. So many conductors slow Schumann down in an effort to make him sound "profound and serious" but just end up sounding sludgy. This is wonderful.

Sawallish's Schumann 4 is golden disk and monumental playing. It is very truthful in Schumann's score and played without much exaggerations. Nevertheless, this give great impressions to listener like me (classic fan - conductor for 50 years).

written in 1841, one of the happiest years of schumanns life having married klara vik, the first redaction had little success although liked by brhams more, this is the 2nd redaction from 1851. Schumann called it a symphonic phantasy, in it he used the most lyrical and personal themes, it isa symphony with the most new not just of his but german symphonic romanticism from the 1st half of the 18th century

Entro?

Adam Case (writing in his history orchestration) said, “ The work of Robert Schumann… Provides one of the few instances in which a composer of the first rank… Was unable to handle the orchestra even moderately well…he did not conceive theme and passages, patterns and textures, which owe their very being to particular instruments or groups of instruments… The continuously even tone quality, the full body but monotonously rich tint of his coloring, is due to the employment of string, woodwinds, and horns in constant combination.“🫢
