As an SEC fan, here is what I noticed the last few years. *First* - Ohio State is one of the Top 3 recruiting college program along with Bama and Georgia and together, the Top 3 schools vacuum up nearly 90% of all 4/5 Star athletes every year. *Second* - Michigan gets the leftovers (no offense meant) along with other schools. Having said that Michigan coaches up what little talent they are able to recruit and *accomplishes way more with less* while Ohio State having several times more talented personnel on its roster is unable to eclipse Michigan in wins the last 3 years. Much respect to Michigan coaching (TCU game is an exception in play calling despite having bigger guys in the Front 7) for over-performing with what they have like David vs. Goliath. Much respect.

Joel, you are one of the best analysts in broadcasting, which is why it confounds me that you are sticking with this narrative that the Wilson touchdown was a close call. Frankly, the debate during the game screamed of "FOX is the Big Ten network and they want Ohio State to win so we don't have to talk about this Michigan "scandal" anymore."
Objectively, the play was not close at all. It was a touchdown. Wilson caught the ball cleanly with his hands (did you forget that a hands only catch is a catch?), there was no bobble. He took two steps after the catch and the ball broke the plane of the goal line. Right there, the play was over, regardless of the fact that he then transferred the ball to the inside of his arm. Even then, his knee had already hit the ground past the goal line and the OSU player grabbed the ball long after that only after Wilson was turned on his back. By rule, the very moment the football is even a centimeter across the beginning of the goal line, the play is dead. Touchdown!! And even with the transfer of the ball to the inside of his arms, he had it firmly well past the goal line.
By sticking with your game time opinion (which was objectively ridiculous at the time based on the replay) you are demonstrating an arrogance that I thought was not part of you. Just admit you were wrong because you were and still are. All you succeeded in doing is create a phony controversy that allows OSU fans to claim that the game was unfairly officiated. Again, the way you, Gus and Dean reacted screamed of "we have our orders, promote Ohio State as much as you can." Frankly, that Dean agreed with you should be a fireable offense. Shame on all three of you, but in particular shame on Dean.
To give you the benefit of the doubt, perhaps you are confusing a goal line situation with a situation where a receiver catches the ball on the sidelines. In the latter case, the receiver must maintain possession after he falls out of bounds for the catch to count. At the goal line, once the ball in the possession of the runner crosses the plane by a centimeter, the play is over, it is dead.

I think "imposing their will" is kind of strong language for a team that tried to win the game kicking field goals. Both teams punted only one time in the second half and Michigan had only one more drive than Ohio State. And they still gave Ohio State the ball with time and a chance to win. Technically, the game was won or lost on that awful throw McCord made in the first quarter, but that final quarter came down to him getting hit as he was throwing the ball.

    • @JMan-24
      @JMan-24 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@TheSchaef47 That’s fair, probably too strong wording. Mich moved the ball the length of the field into scoring range on every possession in the second half. The one punt from OSU was a 3 and out immediately after the TD putting the D right back on the field for another long drive. It’s hard to win running 3 plays in almost a quarter.

    • @TheSchaef47

@@JMan-24 More to the point, it's hard to win when you're trying to win the field position battle, and the defense does its job, but the punter puts the ball into orbit, and then the quarterback almost immediately throws one of the worst balls I've seen all year.
That immediately reversed the field and was basically an automatic TD for Michigan, and after that point Ohio State is playing from behind. They had enough talent to win this game but I'm not sure they had enough to overcome a mistake that colossal in a game where the team with the fewest mistakes wins.

I thought McCord played a very good game, much better than those of us who root for Michigan expected. The first INT was partially on him, but it was also partially on Harrison for not fighting for position. That will be Harrison's one issue at the next level because speed and finesse alone do not make for a dominant NFL receiver (but he is freaking good in any event). The second INT was a desperation throw because McCord absolutely could not take a sack at that point. Certainly, his lack of mobility played into it, but he is who he is. McCord will be better than solid in 2024.

I told Michigan fans the same thing about not running off JH. Here is the difference, JH has revived a program from the dead. He rebuilt it piece by piece. Ryan Day is a trust fund baby. He got a program that Meyer and Tressel built. OSU has top level NFL talent everywhere as well. When Day plays equal or greater competition, he loses. Should they fire him? Ehhhh, not necessarily. As a Michigan fan I’d love him to get a lifetime contract! Realistically, who else is available? Ryan Day spends much of his time telling us how tough his team is and can’t prove it on field. Haurbagh built this program like all his other successful programs and that is in his image. Power, discipline, defense, toughness and trenches. Day is having an identity crisis and that’s because he’s a trust fund baby. He hasn’t had to build anything.

Having all the supposed talent doesn't make it easier. Too many of them are entitled. They tend to rely on their athleticism . When they meet comparable athletes they don't always work as hard as players that have to work for it.

Day has lost 7 games in 5 years. He's coaching one of the top 3 or 4 programs in the country and has only lost to teams as good or better than the ones he's fielded. It happens. Half of those losses have been virtual coin tosses where 1 play against an equal or superior opponent shanged the game. Bad coaching is when you lose to teams that are inferior, and I don't think that's happened. The one coaching decision I will always question was not going for it on 4th and short against Georgia last year after Smart sniffed out the fake punt and called timeout. Just line up and do the push like everybody else and that game is over, Ohio St wins the natty and this conversation isn't even started.

Joel, thank you so much for relating the story of the events surrounding the Zak Zinter accident. As a lifelong Michigan fan and attender of the school, I had no idea about the chanting and its impact. To give you some idea, I was listening to the live radio broadcast, yes radio, of The Game from my hotel room in Tokyo at like 4am or whatever time it was for me. When Zak went down, I certainly experienced a huge sadness as things unfolded. Then the jubilation of Blake's touchdown left me cheering alone quite emotionally in my hotel room. It wasn't until a bit later after the game that I could even watch Blake flash the 6-5 on a TH-cam highlight video, and I think that I watched it about 10 times in a row. I had seen none of the footage from the field when Zak was being attended to. The Michigan radio announcers did make the point that Zak could have probably heard the roar of the crowd at the touchdown from somewhere down the tunnel. Thank you again for filling us in on the details for those of us who could not be there.

In my view, that play didn't provide enough conclusive evidence to overturn the call. If referees begin overturning calls without clear, definitive footage contradicting the original decision, then the purpose of video replay reviews comes into question.

Joel has to give more credit to Moore, he said that he didn't have to make as many tough decisions as Day, but as a coach isn't that a good thing? Moore's gameplan was set up and excuted well so that he didn't have to make those tough decisions.
Not saying that Day is a bad coach and that he needs to be replaced, but you can't make an excuse for him saying that "he has battle scars and had to make tough decisions". All of those excuses are within a coach's control. Give credit to Moore for preparing the better team and executing a good gameplan.

If the receiver has control of the ball as the BALL crosses over the goal line - it's a touchdown. Whatever happens after that is immaterial. It's the same as going out of bounds. The play is OVER once the ball crosses the goal line or once the ball goes out of bounds. If you look at the play carefully, he had control of the ball when the ball went over the goal line.
