In fairness the Thames has gotten a lot cleaner over the years. Nowadays it's one of the cleanest rivers in the world that passes through a major city.
According to global citizen (international education and advocacy organization), “The British government launched an ambitious restoration campaign that banned factories from dumping pollution into the water and installed water treatment plants all along its course. Over time, the river began to recover and today it is widely regarded as the cleanest river in the world that flows through a major city.”
