    I don't know how this ended up in my feed but I remember watching this years ago my old account when I was still playing WoW and I remember that I went and bought a Razer game pad because of you and it made a huge difference in my raid/m+ performance as a Resto Druid main during Legion. Those were some great times. I think I'm coming back for The War Within.

    There is actually a good reason to bind backward move. Which is when you're doing some tricky movement/platforming on some cliff or slope, when you need to drop from an edge of a platform/cliff straight down, or when you need precise positioning for whatever reason. It's very situational, but being able to move slowly when you want to can be useful.

      I don’t like the idea of turning your back on enemies as a tank cause you got interrupts and taunts to nail so your boys don’t die. bar being one shot or stunned by something I’ll back pedal before I take my eyes of the boss/trash pack in dungeons. Raids are a different story cause you got co-tanks to bounce off

    • @insane-hf6ux
      @insane-hf6ux 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rivertam711 right, that's why tanks are the exeption for this rule, you just can tank properly and place enemies where you want if you don't backpedal

    • @kruth6663
      @kruth6663 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Xachury Maybe you haven't noticed that in WOW moving backward is a lot slower than the other directions. Which minimizes your horizontal momentum while falling.
      This is especially helpful when you're on mount / in Druid cat form.

    just got an orbweaver and you helped with everything..thank you :)
    As an added piece of info DO NOT use bar 7 if you are using a stealth class it will copy over your skills from your number 1 to 12 on your regular action bar straight to the new orbweaver bartender bar 7 so you will have 2 copies of your skills and abilities on both hands.
    Use bar 8 instead.

      I like the Orbweaver because it let me uses my left hand. I recent destroyed my right thumb, and I don't fancy the idea of using my left pinky to use my mouse haha. So I had an Orbweaver I got a while ago (for when playing druid QQ). And it's a lifesaver.

    • @demonpride1975
      @demonpride1975 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      obviosuly it's useful if you can' t use your right thumb. but i am saying if you can which is obviously what i mean. then the mouse is the better option, as it is cheaper and people are already used to a mouse.

    Hello Hazel - Great starter guide for those new to keypads. I used an Orbweaver for WoWing for over three years. One tip for all players: order some Sugru, which is a moldable silicone rubber, and modify keys as you like. I've used Sugru on my mice, keyboards, footswitches and keypads for several years. I now use a Kinesis Advantage2 QP keyboard instead of a keypad, since the left keywell is even more ergonomic than either of the popular keypads, AND it gives me more keys (yes, even more than a keypad) that are rapidly reachable. The Kinesis solution frees up deskspace, but does require more time/planning/a techie brain to customize. But, the main point here is: Sugru is the gamer's best friend. By doing all this, I have totally eliminated having to bother with ctrl/alt/shift gyrations for ALL my spells. Milliseconds matter! Love your boss guides too!

    Holy shit this is absolutely brilliant! I was on the fence wether I wanted to get a Keypad (Tartarus v2) and this video has just convinved me to do it lol
    I never even thought to use the keypad like this, with the F keys in the middle and matching bars ingame even though I did the exact same thing with my Naga (and later G600) for years! So with your setup the Keypad could basically become like a second Naga / G600, which is my most beloved and used tool! (And heck it would even be a better Naga with the additional buttons lol) So, thank you for this.

  • @jpomz1
    @jpomz1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you so much for making this! I'm so glad I stumbled on this.
    I've had a Logitech g600 for ages, but I'm planning to get an orbweaver next week.
    I think it's funny that you talk about the g600, because up until that point when I was watching the video, I was thinking about how awesome this video was, but was wondering how difficult it would be to apply it to my setup since I have the g600. Imagine my pleasant surprise when your very next section went into it!
    Thank you for the advice. Having this setup is going to be loads of fun when wow classic hits!

    This helped me so much my mind goes blank when i get into battle with all the binds on my keyboard side of my naga etc. The way you lay it out helped me tremendously. The mouse binds are whats super hard for me to get down and remember. They just feel so foreign to click. Putting cooldowns potions etc there is so much better then how i had it.

    Very cool. I love the way you use bartender to setup the keys for the Tartarus to be displayed on screen in the same grid! Ive just received my Tartarus so I’m going to use this setup. I don’t have a mouse with 12 thumb keys so instead I’m gonna setup my 2 thumb keys on mouse to bind to shift and the other to alt. That way I can then bind 36 commands to 12 buttons on my Tartarus! But thanks for giving me insight into how you use yours - will prove very useful!

    Great vid for anybody starting out with these sorts of peripherals! I've been wondering if anybody else played with a pad like this. I have a Razer Tartarus with 15 keys, and did a very similar setup, but instead of putting the modifier keys on the Tartarus, I set up one button on my programmable mouse to Space for jumping and another to Alt, then set up 2 different Bartender bars: 1 for the non-modified 1 through = keys, then one for Alt + 1 through =.

    I keep the 1 to = assignment of the action bar buttons, and set 1 - 12 to those keys on the Orbweaver. I set the upper thumb button to SHIFT, so I can hold that, hit a number, and move to a different action bar, then use 1-12 to do the action assigned in-game. As I am a resto druid in game, using healbot is easy with the Orbweaver: assign spells to the left, right and centre mouse buttons, then you have 3 options per mouse button with the previously-assigned SHIFT button, plus assigning CTRL to the lower thumb button. Like you, I have movement assigned to the 4-way pad, although I move a lot of the time by pressing both mouse buttons, allowing rejuvenation to be cast while moving.

    I've used a gamepad for 5 years and will not go back to a keyboard. It makes WoW much more intuitive to play. Your strategy is Very similar to what I came up with. It's great to see someone made a video. Moving with the thumbstick is the best part because it frees up your fingers to press abilities. And you have it absolutely right, thumb left and right should be strafe not turn. I use backpeddle as well. Definitely situations where taking a step or two back is the right move. To people compaining about moving with the keyboard, you should be moving with both your mouse and your thumbstick based on the situation. Running and selecting a target? Move with thumbstick, select target with mouse. If you limit yourself to moving with the mouse, you're missing out. The thumb button below the stick I use for jump. Works well and functions exactly like space to jump. In this case you run forward with the mouse and jump with the thumb button.
    My upper left key is Esc. I find that to be somewhat essential. Generally I view the keypad as combat abilities only.
    I have a second grid of abilities, but those are Alt abilities. So you hit Alt and you suddenly have access to a whole second grid of abilities. Does present some challenges with self-casting (Alt being the self-cast modifier). Can be solved with self target macros or using raid frames to target spells (like to heal).
    The onscreen action bar grid is great as well and something I've been doing for a long time. You remap your keybindings by just dragging icons around on screen. Makes it very easy to play alternate specs or classes as well since everything is setup exactly the same.

      I agree the number one benefit is being able you use your thumb to move. I never use right or left never have I find strife to be the way to go, if i need to turn I will use the mouse. I takes awhile to get used to this method but it makes moving seem more fluid. I am mainly a healer and use my modifiers with heal bot and I use a hybrid of mouse clicking and keypad for casting and key binds.

    • @morsmagne
      @morsmagne 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too Cute To Poot I disagree. You can play for longer using a keypad and MMO mouse because your body is in a more natural position. The thumbpad means that you are using a thumb for movement, which frees up 3 fingers to press action buttons at the same time. It's not a good idea to click on action buttons because PvPers like to circle you so you can't target them.

    Some ideas from how I have my set up. Razer Naga 2014, on the mouse mouse wheel button down is mount, wheel to the right click is autorun, and wheel to the left click is space, to disconnect from the ground for flying mounts. With those I can lean back in the chair for long manual flying or running, and use only one hand on the mouse for control. Instead of bags and map I have Escape and space. Escape on a button is very useful for backing out without closing or having to use the keyboard, and space on the left thumb lets me steer with the mouse and time jumps more easily without going back to the main keyboard. Good to have movement duplicated, you can give your main hand a rest from mouse steering without repositioning to the main keyboard. Then just the main bar number line to the Naga 12 buttons, and a grid to the keypad buttons.

    Great guide and nice to see streamers using one (Swifty also). Thank you!! All my friends think I'm some kind of freak for using one.
    Been using a gamepad since 2008 back in Wrath and just can't play any other way now. Started on a Belkin N52, Razer Nostromo (had several), Razer Tartarus, Razer Orbweaver and currenly the G13. Logitech layout took a little to get used to, but I prefer it now. Build quality is "fine" for $60. Orbweaver seems "pricey" for $130, but the quality is really there and mechanical keys are amazing. Since Logitech stopped making the G13 I'll be going back to the Orbweaver. Not real happy about switching again, but it is what it is.
    To playing with a gamepad is just so efficient and it's a comfortable layout. Thanks Hazel!!

    Not bad, My Nastramo is kind of set up like your pad there but the thumb button is jump since you do still need your jump button! you can choose an angle on the dpad to bring up the map instead. I place the tab key on the dpad, as well as my push to talk. only moves are bound to my main 14 buttons and the round button above the dpad is my shift modifier which gives me 28 binds to put on moves/potions/trinkets. all movement is on my mouse and it's a 5 button mouse, Strafe keys at my thumb, autorun on the middle click. This allows for full movement and having the jump key at your thumb on the speed pad allows for ease of jumping out certain mechanics. I do have a couple more settings on the pad, but this is the overall jist of it.

    I use Logitech G13's top 3 rows for combat keybinds, thumbstick for movements and the remaining buttons for UI panels and minor keybinds (es. boss button, pet attack). Then I have a G600 mouse, with the 3rd large button for jumping, side scrollwheel buttons for targeting, and most of the side buttons for multiboxing-related commands. For modifiers I have a foot pedal (stinkyboard). Still, your setup is very interesting and I could reconsider some choice :)

    This is great. I don't understand the not back-peddling tho.... I guess maybe on some classes it has no use but at least on Hunter, you can cast and move at the same time, but only if you are facing your target. So i personally back-peddle quite often in raids to just slightly get out of some debuff under me while still engaging in the fight. I do like Gamepads though but have never used one for WoW. Maybe i will try it out.

      @snowchimp4000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Strafe is still better in all those situations, you move much faster than back pedalling and can still face your target. The only place back pedalling makes sense is when tanking so mobs don't hit you in the ass as you reposition. For that reason I still have it bound.

    I play the same way as you hazel, when i buy my logitech mouse my wow change a lot :D
    i use a pretty similar mapping to yours. 1-12 for damage skills, and in my keyboard 1-4 for stuns, silences and interrumps.
    Great video :D

    I personally use the logitech g600 mouse where it has 12 buttons at the left side an the gshift one at the right that turns those 12 into different ones making it like you have 24 buttons. My bindings are shift and the F number buttons and for the gshift ones are ctrl shift F number keys. And I use bartender with the same way the buttons go so I can learn /remember easier.

    I use a Tartarus Pro (previously I used a Belkin N15te). I map 1-12 on 1-4, 6-9, and 11-14). Then I map control keys to my thumb button (shift-up, Alt-back, ctrl-down) so I have 36 different keybinds. But that's not all; I then map 15 to a profile toggle so I can use that as another modifer key (Typically I use this to access map, bags, and other non-combat things). Finally, the Tartarus gives me another set up buttons at the bottons that I map to F5-F8 (I don't use f4 because alt-f4 is real, and it happens quite often if I use F4 on those buttons). I use buttons on my mouse to straife, autorun, and back-peddle (when I tank).

  • @yurika12
    @yurika12 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Btw I highly recommend binding alt shift or ctrl to your mouse's extra buttons to modify ALL of your game pad buttons. So you will have a whole new table of keybinds. Easily have 90 keybinds with only your mouse thumb and left hand

    • @yurika12
      @yurika12 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rather than having to have modifers on they keypad to modify you keypad buttons. I find it easier to press 1 button with each hand than have to contort my let hand to hit the shift with the pinkeye and a second button.

      so bind ctrl alt and shift to the scroll mouse button, to use as keybinds for the orb weaver. that is really unnecessary. just get a thumb grid mouse.

    Is it possible to adequately mimic mouse movement with the D pad? I currently use the Left Handed Naga 2014 mouse and only the mouse to play. I have to play one handed and it has to be my left hand because reasons. I'm looking for a replacement for the Naga because it is 6 yrs old and starting to die and it is no longer available for purchase.

    I love to have a Gamepad (a cheap one that I've been used to for a while now but it's pretty rugged) and my razer Naga hex mouse and like you barely touch the keyboard. But I would add one thing, back-pedalling is an essential keybind if you're a tank, you often want to move the boss without turning your back so I have a specific keybind for that. :)

    I use Shift and Alt on my mouse wheel tilt left or right. i have a fang keypad and uset 1-8 keys with shift and alt modifiers on 1-8 and some others like shift q-w-a-s and control e-d so i can quickly hit everything with modifiers. it's kinda amazing if your mouse has the tilt left/right

After 10 years off playing as a hybrid clicker I had to do something...atm it feels clunky as ****, but I assume after a week I'll get used to the new bindings. It also helped that my main is shadow :) For healing I bound everthing to mouse/shift/alt/ctrl. I assume there is no need to adjust my healing playstyle?

    What you are doing is actually very good, but a lot of things can be improved using bar4 move advanced features and using shifting in a different way while keeping it compatible with warriors, rogues and druids different stance . If you are interested just let me know. The setup is a bit more complicated there's a lot to think... but it end's result is so much more simple and efficient to use. I would like to share that with you if interested. Good day

    Been using a Logitech G13 for the last 10 years? Been through two so far. One of the two buttons near the thumb controller keep dying first. If I can not use it on a game, I will not l play it. Heck, I even go it to work for Diablo 3. I use the thumb control for movements. For diablo, just bin the control to mouse clicks. I actually set up my WoW button interface to match the layout of my G13 buttons using the Dominos Mod. I agree, set those buttons you use a lot to be easy to push. Then work my way down to the second most, to rarely. I use G15 for all my jumps in ALL games, easy for my pinky. Plus I am left handed. Hmm, I should look at a different mouse. I always worry it will be to much with too many buttons. But then again, I need one as I need more buttons!
    Also, you can export/import profiles.

    How good is the thumb stick for moving (qwe) on the Razer? I have read it is more of an "8 directional button" and might feel odd for movement where the G13 is more of an actual joystick. Really temped to grab one on Amazon but am afraid the joystick might not feel intuitive by design. I wouldn't really be interested in a gamepad using keys to move I would just keep my keyboard and my G600 mouse.

  • @senglish1983
    @senglish1983 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    as a tank you need to back peddle a lot... usually just one or two steps to keep a group in front of you... If you strafe for some reason they will go behind you and keep doing so at least on some groups.. but if you just take a step sometimes two backwards they will group in front and you can dodge block and parry effectively... If they get behind you you can't avoid anything so yeah.

    I don't have that keypad but I usually bind keys so they are close to qwe which I use to move. Then 12345 for main spammable skills leaving my 5 for the interrupt which is not something you spam but you still need it at hand. Then ASDRTFG for the rest leaving important cooldowns on the T or G and important skill like a shield on the F. I then use ALT for the movement skills or slows/roots and other cooldowns I don't need that often like bloodlust and finally I put my defensive skills like medallion, barkskin and maybe a pvp talent on F1 to F5. I do have a gamer mouse but it only has a couple of buttons which I never got used to, and I normally use them to set up my auto mount or the special ability button. I also use zxcv to access the stance bar and sometimes I use backpedal on ranged specially healers where you need to go back while having line of sight to keep healing so I have character specific bindings with the s as backpedal and replace that button with the | (straight slash before the 1 key).
