I'd say the reason why he chose the macaw as his form is partly for just a little bit of "fun" in his life/line of work. The least he'll be able to do on his joruney's where no one else likes him and always hates to see him around is fly and be "free" even if just for just a fleeting moment. The other reason, I'd say is just a movie message choice. That is, if we think about it (other than turtles) parrots live for a VERY long time and in many cases, they outlive their owners, so out of all pets, these would be the ones that would understand death more than most others.
