Here's my theory on this. Mr McAllister was instructed by Mrs Astor to introduce Larry to Mrs Blane believing that a scandal would ensue knowing that she could use it against Mrs Russell. Perhaps, Mrs Blane was instructed by Mrs Astor to begin the affair with Larry. Larry finds out, is heart broken and falls into the arms of Marion who will have just broken it off with her suitor. This is what FINALLY brings Marion and Larry together. Just a theory. What do you think?
I don't think that Ward McAllister is a matchmaker. He already indicated that Mrs. Blane stays past the end of the season because she can. (no husband or mother to boss her around)
I mean not a bad theory cause it obviously would distract mrs russell enough but not enough to not complete her mission of joining the upper echelon of society but we still got the season to see how it plays out 😅
If they stick to the historical account of the real people involved, Caroline Astor would never involve herself in such a thing. Her balls were infamous, but no shenanigans were allowed at them. Even if Mrs. Blane is widowed, Caroline would find such a thing reprehensible. However, there is a reason Nathan Lane was cast as Ward McAllister. Larry Russell (a fictitious chatacter) is a very good looking young man. McAllister was always willing to help any young man get a bit of fun, wherever he wished. I am surprised he and Oscar van Rhijn hadn't crossed paths more often. Julian Fellowes fancies himself a modern day Oscar Wilde...that is why OW is such a pretentious douche canoe in his appearance. I doubt Julian thought he was written that way. Julian likely thought himself clever.
