    “ you have been reading those German books again” is the equivalent of “ you have been reading those communists papers” quote from Violet Crowley. 🤣 I love how there are small details that link both show together.
    I would love this Violet and Agnes in the same room. And Isabel in the middle trying to mediate. 😂

    Agnes's Line about not being concerned with Facts Reminded Me of Lady Violet's Line in Downton Abbey where They Said: "I am sick and tried of Logic. If I could choose between Principle and Logic I'd take Principle every time." Agnes is Truly the Violet of The Gilded Age... XD

    6:57 Agnes's line "Youve been reading those German books again " reminded me of Dowager Countess Violet telling Isobel Crawley "Youve been reading those Communist newspapers again ! " when the latter says that the former couldnt give tuppence about Ethel , a maid!! So similar in their snobbish-ness!!

      The dialogue isn’t clunky at all. It’s dated, as is her manner of speaking, but that’s because the show takes place in… the gilded age. more than 140 years ago. people spoke differently, especially members of the American upper class.

    I absolutely love this series. The Golden Age is what my great-grandparents were living in at the time, and their fortune grew a whole lot larger. They were Russian immigrants who came with health. They were in the South of France when the Russian Revolution broke out. In those days, no one who had money could travel lightly; they had many suitcases, jewelry pieces, and many bank accounts in Germany, Austria, France and Italy. At some point, my great-grandmother grew very scared, so they took a boat to Boston, where they lived and died years later. This is why I still live in the Northern New York State, it is not their house but the house my parents built, with many treasures from their Russian past.

    I find her to be rather tedious, with Oscar's quips being spot-on. However, that last one of hers..."I haven't been thrilled since 1975" is self-deprecating enough to make me laugh.
    I find her sabotaging Ada's happiness, simply because misery loves company to be beneath her character altogether and a poor choice for the showrunners.

    • @pdruiz2005
      @pdruiz2005 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      She said "I haven't been this thrilled since 1865." You know, the North's complete victory over the slave-owning South. Agnes was clearly from a hard-core abolitionist family--her dear, departed Papa gave money to that school that uplifted black children. So Agnes was pleased as punch that the slave-owners of the South were brought to heel and stripped of their slaves.

      I think her reaction was perfectly within her character. That marriage wasn't a marriage fit for their family name, by Agnes' standards. As far as they knew, the man had no money - although we find out in the end that he had "new money". It's not a match she would ever react well to. It was certainly a convenient cover for her fear of losing Ada, but I think her reaction was perfectly within her character.

    • @jonahflores8cinco
      @jonahflores8cinco 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      She did not sabotage Ada's happiness, the former suitor was not really interested in her sister, but in the position and benefits he planned to obtain from the family. Apart from remembering that in the past, Mr. Brook himself opposed him marrying one of his daughters, upon learning how he boasted about an advantageous marriage.

    Rich families back then often DID(though not all the time obviously)marry cousins, but only whenever money was involved
    ⬆️ 2:34 this however shows how didactic she is, if your gonna mary relations, marry RICH relations(in her mind it seems)

    My problem with the Van Rijn set is it looks small and cloying. There’s no sense of space as befits a family of old money. The parlour looks like they’re sitting two feet apart. The wall behind each actor always looks only three feet away. These dimensions feel closer to those of individual apartments carved out from one entire family house, which didn’t happen until well after this time period in many areas of Manhattan abandoned by the moneyed classes. There’s absolutely no excuse for the suffocating visuals. I hope this is fixed in Season 2.

    • @AlexS-oj8qf
      @AlexS-oj8qf ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Not to mention that this is supposed to be their “New Home”, but I guess the Van Rhijn are not as wealthy as the Russels or the other old money such as the Astors, the Fishes, and the Morrises whose house looks bigger externally. But then again it’s only two old lady living there so I suppose they don’t require too much space, hence settled in a pre-fabricated Brownstones instead of their custom Mansions, and presumably they don’t hoards lot but purchase various lots across the city. Their older house is probably grander, a Van Rhijn palatial house, but left behind because the neighborhood fell out of fashion and Society is moving Northward. Can’t see how Agnes managed to have steady income to support 2 person with no income unless she’s some kind of Land Lady.

      It’s not suffocating it feels big actually. If you think about it. Mrs van Rhijn makes it clear that she and her husband didn’t have the best relationship, as such the house isn’t made for large scale entertaining. Could it be bigger? Yes, but I feel this suits the point of the story.

      Well, it is created by the same guy who, after Downton Abbey, said he would create the show from the USA perspective on old Lady Grantham's time. So, yes, the period is and stories are similar because its a similar time period from a similar socioeconomic perspective and from the same writer; not really an imitation

    • @anyaw340

      It's not an imitation. It's an American story, written by the same man who wrote Downton Abbey (I hope you realize!) about the same class of people as Downton Abbey. Of course there are similarities due to the writer being the same, as well as similarities in the cultures of America and England, but the actual stories are very different. A good many of these families are REAL families (the Vanderbilts and the Astors, for instance). For one thing, these American families were astronomically more rich than British aristocracy, and the story depicts their rise with the rise of America and its industries. It's a completely different story from Downton Abbey.
