If the only thing I can view is English period drama for the rest of my life, I would be content.
Same here😊
Ditto
I so agree. ❤ 🇬🇧
Wow I thought I was the only one 😊
I wholeheartedly agree
one of my favorite films - and all the better that Michael Palin is actually playing out the true story of his great-grandfather, Edward Palin
I only knew Michael Palin’s genius side of comedy from watching him in “Monty Python” series and movies, and from the hilarious movie “A Fish Named Wanda.” But to my surprise this is the first time I see him in a drama. What a great actor!
He's on the Graham Norton show a lot. He's adorable and very funny
I've seen this before, but am delighted to see it again. I adore Michael Palin's work.
Apparently about Michael Palin’s real life grandfather? How marvelous Michael could play the role!
Michael Palin plays his Grandfather, and does such a fine tribute to him. Lovely story.
Great-Grandfather.
The sound could be louder, please. It's stupid for TH-cam to cover the last screen with advertisements of other channels, blocking the written end of the story.
TH-cam has proven to have exceptionally poor judgement.
I have ALWAYS ADORED MICHAEL PALIN!!! Thank you for sharing this
What a beautiful story.Michael is such a wonderful actor with a very talented cast …thank you for uploading this …more like this are welcomed -
We played alot of croquet,us girls in the '70s. I miss my family
Sweet movie. I loved how soft and peaceful the music went along with the movie. Beautiful scenes. Thank you uploading.
💥🎉🤸Unmoored
Some people drink. Do drugs. Shoplift. Change jobs often. Have sex with strangers. I watch wonderful old movies and am sustained. 🤣
Lovely film, hadn't heard of it before. From what I can tell, the original title is AMERICAN FRIENDS. I've spent quite a number of days vacationing in Oxford from the US and recognized many of the streets and buildings.
Interesting, being based on Michael Palin’s grandfather’s life. I enjoyed the movie. Thanks.
Great-Granfather.
I often wonder why they do not make movies like this more often....? Great movie! Seems like modern/popular movies are.... blah... everyone is entitled to their own likes/dislikes though...
For those saying how awful Michael Palin's character was, don't forget this is a story about a man who was changed by something he never thought would happen to him - falling in love.
great story, excellent actors, the young woman was 'peace' itself with a touch of wilderness in her. Loved it.
The Brits leave Hollywood in the dust mites!
That's why there are so many of them in Hollywood and their movies don't go as big as Hollywood's, right? I love a lot of British media, including period pieces and classic novels, but even so.
Yes. @LadyAstarionAncunin (below) is correct. We're fortunate to find this entertainment. I agree though it just isn't the Hollywood culture. Learn to live as an outsider in your own country and vote with your dollars and attention. Most of my entertainment originates in Britain and am even more surprised that much is from decades ago. I am adjusting to an alien culture and time everyday.
Agree
The british actors have honed their craft.
Oh, the subtlety and nuance !!!
It's about feeling and not taking the easy way out with shallowness. We can all have a bit of that but Hollywood hasn't a soul
So glad to have found this - a proper romantic ending for once, and so many of my favourite actors popping up. Though the great David Calder's brown Barnet had to be seen to be believed! 😂
Nice. My beautiful sister got a romantic love after the sad of 30 years. I love her so much and I miss her.
Thank you for the upload. It's such a peaceful film and the classical music throughout was calming. Also such beautiful scenes of rolling hills and greenery. Loved it ❤
I read the synopsis before i started watching this, and wondered what societal norms could have been breached back then? I guess we've made some progress since then, after all. I've always liked Michael Palin, and it's nice he's made a trubite to his grandfather this way.
Absolutely beautiful movie!❤This
Michael Palin is very talented
This is beautiful.
What a lovely man
Micheal Palins grandfather must have been, good on him.
so much visual and poetic beauty in this movie
A lovely & heartwarming period film which I thoroughly enjoyed & wished that it was part 1, with many more parts to follow ❤️💕.
Beautifully acted. An inspiring film. Thank you ❤
A WONDERFUL story! Lovely!
Some Very Big Hitters in their youth, not to mention the Python connection. Lovely, many thanks.
After being educated in Connecticut and working for decades in New York I moved to the mountains of Northern California in 2018 and it was is better than I ever expected. Certainly must be the warmest place on earth above 2000 ft above sea level. But the alps look nice if you like ice and not sun
Good move, glad you can afford it..
Each scene could be a painting.
I recognized the voice of Simon Jones as one of the professors. He plays Bannister in The Gilded Age on HBO. He played the king in the first Downton Abbey film. Love his voice.
Loved this movie! Thanks so much!
What a beautiful story it touched my heart ❤
A very good film thank you for posting
Beautiful story
I enjoyed it so much and did'nt want it to end.
This movie made me so happy!😊😊😊😊
Wonderful!
Enjoyed it. Peaceful. 👍👍
Actually the movie is called "American Friends " a 1993 film.
THANK YOU. Now I know not to watch it, only because a still shot implied it was a gay flick (what I'm after).
Yes! I finally figured that out after looking her up….and I happen to love that version of Little Women!
New subscriber. Hope the content meaning ful and entertaining... Good luck 😊😊😊
Very enjoyable movie
Great ending.....!
Very similar to Shadowlands, Anthony Hopkins
I read a sermon by a bishop once, the central point of which was that ladies should only ever wear crinolines with their costumes for climbing mountains. I thought to myself; he’s a sound fellow!
What an exciting movie .....
История сделана ювелирно. Все на высоком уровне. И самое приятное как она заканчивается.
The ending had no jewelry--no shown jewelry.
The true jewel was the heart of Palin's character and the heart of Eleanor.
Knights who say ‘NI!’
'Stop that! Stop that!!'...
The young lady who plays the role of "Elena" plays really well here and leaves the impression of a mature yet not old grand dame, a pretty lady whom certainly many unmarried men would like to have.
And married , too, if they had the chance :)
A very beautiful film, very well written and beautifully executed ❤️
Does this movie go by any other name? I recognize Simon Jones who played Arthur dent in the hitchhiker's guide series but neither Google nor the Internet movie database says this title exist.
Name of the movie is American Friends
I recognized him, too, by voice. He is in one of my favorite shows. He plays Bannister in The Golden Age.
I can only agree with you and all the other comments/sentiments below.
Loue my english 🎬📺 thank you 🤗
Wow
the original title for this was "American Friends" (1991).
Thank you for the clarification!
Yes I was thinking it was called something else!! Thanks!
Fab...luvverly stuff...thank you👍
The old lady from Benidorm, the one complaining of the mountain walk.
15:16 - "Who could deny a Grand hand in this view?" (Romans 1:20)
I thought he said; “Who could doubt the presence of the Divine Hand in all of this.” No?
Thankyou xxx
Kinda slow, love Palin though. Great to honor his ancestor. Glad to see this gentleman get out of that jail of male intellect back into the real world of heart despite other dudes' gosips. Love Palin still.
Trigger from only fools and Horses, Emily Lloyds dad.
Why go on a trek if you take half the house with you?
They did at that time. No foldaway, easy care clothes. Everything was wool and cotton, sometimes silk, and needed a lot of care, as well as taking up lots of space. Also don't forget people would be expected to dress (formally) for dinner, so he'd need to take a frock coat, formal waistcoat and ties, evening trousers, shirts, collars, shirt fronts, studs, and evening shoes, before he even started packing his walking clothes.
Beautiful old movies.Thank you Utube
Please god someone teach that dude how to tune his clarinet!
Hear hear 👂!
❤😊😊😊😊😊
To thine own Brits be true
More like forbidden friendships !
Isn’t this ‘American Friends’? Based on Michael Palin’s grandfather(?)’s story
Yes, Edward Palin, there's a reference in the end credit. He and Eleanor eloped and had seven children.
An advert every 4 minutes so sfter 10 adverts I gave up. How to ruin a film. Get very greedy 😢
Look for Adbocker in settings.
❓Mr. Sick, I don't have adverts. But then I'm on You Tube Premium. You may watch movies for free, 24/7, all over the Internet and you complain. Why is that ?
@@user-te4of2fq5d Possibly because it's NOT free on YT Premium. You have to pay for it!
This movie was on TH-cam earlier, but is great. But a bad copy 🤔
Who is the actress who plays Eleanor?
I have seen her before but can’t quite place her.
Connie Booth, the American born former wife of John Cleese.
She played the maid in Fawlty Towers.
Trini Alvarado. She played Meg March in little woman 1994 version.
What year was this movie made ?
1991. Written by Michael Palin about his great-grandfather.
Play up play up and play the game
another sad story about "nice guys finish last".....
And she didn't even like him...
She didn’t?
Mr. Ashby ? Why, she loved him ! It is her Aunt that I feel sorry for.
@@carolcole570 she didn’t love the father of her child, the one who became the new president
@@Twinsister9555 Thank you.
@@Twinsister9555 yeah, and Mr. Nice Guy has to rise now the child of his worst rival and enemy - what a fate!
This movies was originally released as American Friends. Why was it renamed?
Copyright issues reducing the chance it will be removed from YT.
@@sansnom508 cheers!
I dedicate dis movie to my mam not not mummy not mum but mam love u
Who changed the title....and, why?
I suspect it may have got mixed up with the American comedy show 'Friends'. There would have been lots of idiotic comments like 'what are you talking about? This isn't Friends!'.
she is young enuff 2b his granddaughter - there is a name for men like him.
That name in the 19th century is a more than eligible suitor for a pregnant female without family or fortune or practical education? We have a great re-set today. Females no longer need a men but may expect one if they wish, We see motives more clearly today and have greater self-determiniation. We're more liberated today and are becoming more so. Live accordingly. An engaging story, beautifully filmed with locations and costuming at the highest standard. I believe neither males nor females would want to return to the relationships of those days no matter how picturesque. You can see how the female had no control over her emotions and how, in effect, she destroyed the career of the male lead.
@@johnwollschlager9827 Absolutely, most of the comments here are through the view of 21st century not taking into account the times it was supposed to portray. Women at that time needed a husband to exist in the society and men need a woman to maintain a household or like this poor man Ashby forbidden to form any sort of relationship if he wanted a career.
Story of my g-mother... as soon as she turned 16 her family was on a lookout for a suitor and my g-father got an offer of a job as a headmaster at a boys school but he needed a wife to get it. Therefore he went looking for one. He was 28 at that time. Yes, they got married but the marriage was not a happy one.
Proper on the side of my g-mother but with many indescretions and gambling on the side of my g-father. They were always short of money but my g-father demanded a household run on the level of their social status. He would say to my g-mother: dear we have a dinner for 12 people today, local doctor, lawyer, priest, business person... And she had to provide. She started taking boarders to help with the finances.
So people think about the times, it is not 21c that is portrayed in this movie.

Connie Booth's wind tunnel face lift is very distracting.

Why are women so unkind to each other? Connie Booth is just beautiful.
Should never have been allowed!
Lol
Y not
Yes, WHY NOT ????? Yeshua King Messiah, LOVE your handle ! “ 🎼 Soon and very soon…..”.
It is difficult to feel any afection for the insufferable, pompous, boring, insensitive, humerless 'hero' of the film.
My guess is that @willowwobble is a woman.
Bless use the off button to end your pain 👍
@@johnwollschlager9827 She if she is so does not represent all women's views. I actually loved how this character was not fooled into fake mannerisms etc. A woman who could think for herself.
Shame even in a perfectly good film they have to sow their thoughts of evolution.
Why?
People have differing views - it’s not a conspiracy against you.
Always promoting theory of evolution
#wickednessinhighplaces
Perhaps your God also created Evolution. Why is that theory so scary to so many?
It was a period reference. People were exploring nature and realising it wasn't as simple as 'God put it there'. They were asking how. It was churchmen who led the way, believing that by understanding nature they could come closer to God.
A pity! Michael Palin is not a good actor - needed a stronger talent to support the story
Ahh..the East and the West, and never the 'twain shall Meet..
The Americans in Oxfordshire feeling homesick and misunderstood...and then the glimmer of hope !
