I went back and rewatched every scene...Joost is very clever. He makes the audience think and replay the clip...He also incorporated a theme about Europe and a music style associated with the Netherlands to represent in a contest like Eurovision.
I think the lyrics are a mix of sadness and happiness at the same time. Because even though he struggles through his journey, by losing his parents, he still lives his dream and the dream of his parents to travel freely from one place to another within europe while connecting with different people. Not only that, also following his passion for music not stopping "until they say. yes, yes, he does that very well ey!".
I have watched a lot of reaction video's of this song now, but you sir notice so much. Details in de lyrics, details in de video, where things overlap (the young kid / the artist / the old dude) or contradict (happy beat, sad message). His dad taught him that the world has no actual boundaries/borders, His mother died a year later, when he was 13, due to cardiac arrest. Before his dad passed, Joost was already writing all kinds of stuff and promised one day he was going to go to Eurovision, He has gone through so many challenges in life.

It's a very grief heavy song. It's not satire, it's trying to run away from reality by changing scenery. You can go to every country in the European Union, but you'll take emotional pain with you wherever you go.

I like that this song is like "Papaoutai" in some way. If you don't listen carefully both songs are very good pop songs, but underneath they have such an energy because of the strong feelings towards their parents. I like this kind of songs, you can dance happily and cry at the same time.

I hadn't realized it yet, but I think you may be right about "Welcome to Europe, stay here till I die". As @Lillith. said, the whole EU open borders and travel theme running through the song mostly serves to highlight you can't run away from yourself. But this phrase further trivializes open borders by highlighting it's still just swapping one set of borders for another. Klein said he was inspired by his late father telling him borders are human inventions. I think the lesson he learned ("I listened to you") is actually to free yourself from self-doubt.
The song is wonderful. Many people forget what Europe means. We are neighbors and friends. We have all the freedoms that others only wish for. That's exactly what he wants to tell us with this song. What I find particularly beautiful is that he sings it in Dutch. If I could, I would give him 12 bonus points for that. For the song from me from Germany 12 points. I think that the Netherlands will be in the top 5, as many countries will once again give each other points, or get the bonus, war, persecuted or otherwise. This one is by far my favourite, picking up so many details without even knowing Dutch or Joosts background, and maybe not much about Dutch culture either. But still picking up so many important things. Read into the background of the song, read the lyrics again, with translations (and do know that the Dutch 'grenzen' can be translated as borders as in the official video's, but also translates to limits...) Know that papa is the Dutch word for dad. You see him touching his heart when saying 'papa' and that has a very specific reason. As has the From me to my parents part at the end. That is a sad story with a beautiful line to it in itself, as actually this complete song is. Read into it more, and as you understand more you will get to love this song more and more and more. It ís a sad story, and yet there is a lot of positivity in it. It is a happy tune, with sad notes. It's both about being together as Europe, as about traveling Europe, as it is a (heavy) travel within his own mind and soul. Read the background story. Edygrim, I'd agree that there is a sadness in the song, but I think it is about a certain hope that we should forget about national sentiments (which we mourn maybe) in favour of more global unity (which offers so much joy). That's what I read into it anyway. But apart from that it's a great song that touches so many different themes in just 3 minutes.

The style is a mix between 'gabber' and 'happy hardcore' music. When the beat dropped the guys are 'aan het hakken' (do the hakken dance) which is basically a 'gabber' music style dance. Its all very 1990/2000-ish vibe.
The song is smart for several reasons. Using courtries names of specific cultures is a proven method which works. It is indeed sad for the underlying story him getting on with live after parents died early age (dad from cancer and mom soon after from pain all at early age)

The clip shows him in his younger years (when he was 12) and shows his dad (if he had not died when he was 12, his mother died a year later). At the end he is talking to both and his childhood photo and house are burning. He lost that all when he was young. So it is kind of a sad ending indeed. You can add another layer to this ending because a part of Europe also is burning. The first part is about being a European and being or becoming proud of that also. Stand together.

The song has a double layer. His parents died young. His father (papa) is featured in the clip. Even mentioning, "papaoutai" (papa where are you), is a reference. There are many references to Dutch pop culture of 10-20 years ago. I have listened to it 5 times now and I am still discovering new tiny jokes, like referring tot K-pop etc. His father always told him he should continue and try to complete in the in the eurovision contest It is a tribute, to his father that he lost at age 12.
I like that this song is like "Papaoutai" in some way. If you don't listen carefully both songs are very good pop songs, but underneath they have such an energy because of the strong feelings towards their parents. I like this kind of songs, you can dance happily and cry at the same time.

There are more references like him referring to Stromae with his song Papaoutai, which means 'dad where are you?'. And then Europapa, papa=dad in Dutch, while at the same time referring to Europe as a father or fatherland.
Stromae is a Belgian singer, singing in French. His dad is from Rwanda, his Mam from Belgium. Stromae grew up without his father. Papa ou te? French for Dad, where are you? Joost can relate to that because his father died when he was 12.
The song is a hommage to Europe and his daddy (Papa in Dutch), so it is mushed together Europa (Europe in Dutch) + Papa = Europapa.

I hadn't realized it yet, but I think you may be right about "Welcome to Europe, stay here till I die". As @Lillith. said, the whole EU open borders and travel theme running through the song mostly serves to highlight you can't run away from yourself. But this phrase further trivializes open borders by highlighting it's still just swapping one set of borders for another. Klein said he was inspired by his late father telling him borders are human inventions. I think the lesson he learned ("I listened to you") is actually to free yourself from self-doubt.
The song is wonderful. Many people forget what Europe means. We are neighbors and friends. We have all the freedoms that others only wish for. That's exactly what he wants to tell us with this song.
What I find particularly beautiful is that he sings it in Dutch. If I could, I would give him 12 bonus points for that. For the song from me from Germany 12 points.

This one is by far my favourite, picking up so many details without even knowing Dutch or Joosts background, and maybe not much about Dutch culture either.
But still picking up so many important things.
Read into the background of the song, read the lyrics again, with translations (and do know that the Dutch 'grenzen' can be translated as borders as in the official video's, but also translates to limits...)
Know that papa is the Dutch word for dad.
You see him touching his heart when saying 'papa' and that has a very specific reason.
As has the From me to my parents part at the end.
That is a sad story with a beautiful line to it in itself, as actually this complete song is.

Edygrim, I'd agree that there is a sadness in the song, but I think it is about a certain hope that we should forget about national sentiments (which we mourn maybe) in favour of more global unity (which offers so much joy). That's what I read into it anyway. But apart from that it's a great song that touches so many different themes in just 3 minutes.

The style is a mix between 'gabber' and 'happy hardcore' music.
When the beat dropped the guys are 'aan het hakken' (do the hakken dance) which is basically a 'gabber' music style dance. Its all very 1990/2000-ish vibe.
The song is smart for several reasons. Using courtries names of specific cultures is a proven method which works. It is indeed sad for the underlying story him getting on with live after parents died early age (dad from cancer and mom soon after from pain all at early age)

He always watched Eurovision with his dad and told him he was ging to be part of it one day. The Papaoutai is also a refrence to his dad (means 'where are you dad'). 'Pap' means 'dad' in Dutch, thats why its called Europapa :)

In my opinion Joost created a masterpiece indeed. We even know that he does it all himself. He designed the goofy suit on his iPad and everything we can see in the video clip or at the live performance is totally from his own creativity. There are only a few friends he trusts and are allowed to advice, but for 99% it’s all Joost you hear and see. To me has been proven that Joost is a terific artist with huge creativity. In this performance, he did it all. He entertained, he surprised, there was a specific meaning, built the climax and the unexpected serious, very emotional and personal finish made this song perfectly complete. Masterpiece it is!

At the end he is talking to both and his childhood photo and house are burning. He lost that all when he was young. So it is kind of a sad ending indeed. You can add another layer to this ending because a part of Europe also is burning. The first part is about being a European and being or becoming proud of that also. Stand together.
