  • This is probably the most powerful film I’ve seen this year. Here is my review for the movie Moonlight which is directed by Barry Jenkins and features an Oscar worthy performance by Mahershala Ali .

    I see your "wow" and raise you one "wow." Saw it Friday night and if I try to describe it, I will certainly fail. Few films in my lifetime force me to talk about it for hours and days and weeks after. This film can't leave my mind.

    This film has a different impact on me every time i see it. First time i saw it...i was hypnotized by it, second time i saw it i was floored by its technical mastery...the third time i saw it...it gutted me, it reduced me to floods of tears. It still continues to affect me when i watch it...its an absolutely brilliant film👌🎬

    Great Review! Agreed!!!! This movie is truly extraordinary.. Art at its finest.. If any movie ever truly deserved five stars, it's this one. I saw this film a week ago, I still have not recovered from it.., and for the record, I'm a heterosexual black male.., and I thought this movie was, for lack of any other better word I can think of..., Beautiful!!! It's a human story, this not a movie about sexuality...

    Just watched the movie yesterday and you called it 4 months ago. "Juan" not only got an Oscar nod, he won. I thought ALL of the acting was phenomenal in this movie, as you mentioned. Although I was extremely happy for Ali, and the movie for winning, other than Noemie, (Chiron's mom) if I had to choose one person from the film to give the nod to I would have chosen the teen Chiron. The look in his eyes made me feel so sad for him from when he was being bullied to when he was being treated badly by his mother, he made me feel like a helpless bystander who wanted to help but couldn't. His acting was outstanding! The Chiron character moved me to tears the most during act 2. Adult Chiron would have been a very close second choice, for me. With his facial expressions, he said so much without saying anything. He was so darn incredible! Trevante Rhodes was the only actor I was familiar with before this movie. I had seen him before (in a Tyler Perry show) so I was so proud of him. But overall, I'm so happy for every involved and I'm ecstatic this movie won best picture. And much kudos to you for giving an awesome review.

    Thank you for your review. I watched it and loved it. I'm so glad to see homosexuality and homophobia being addressed in the black community.
    But it's definitely much more than that. It addresses bullying, coming of age and finding oneself in life....something we can all relate to.

      +maakusensei it took me awhile too. The memory of the motions that young Chiron went through were very moving. I didn't even mention the scene were he takes a bath. Really small scene but perfect in capturing a small moment... Him just boiling the water and going through the motions. I love it when film makers just show every day things like that

    TOTALLY late on this, but I think your review was the most spot on I've seen so far. Just a couple of things that I think might make people appreciate the film even more that I haven't seen discussed yet...
    1. Drug Dealers/gang members (especially "OG's") tend to be very nuanced individuals. They do terrible things, but often are capable of doing tremendous good as well. In fact they often see their "vocation" as a means to an end. Stanley "Tookie" Williams (a founding member of the "CRIPS") is a good example, but he is not at all unusual. He never tried to deny or make excuses for the fact that he did some terrible things, but what a lot of folks don't realize is that he also made sure the kids in his community were fed, had a safe place to play and books to read and he strongly encouraged kids to stay in school. He was continuing his work even while on death row, which is why (as some of you may remember) there was worldwide protest over his execution -- including in Arnold Schwarzenneger's home country of Austria where Schwarzenneger's name was removed from a sports complex and there was even a petition to rename the complex after Williams. They are often very highly regarded in the community and see themselves as guardians, mentors and protectors in the community. Understanding that background made the moment when Juan was confronted with the impact of his actions all the more impactful for me and it made me connect more with the devastation his character must have felt.
    2. I had the strangest feeling at the very last shot of the film because I understood from a healing perspective what was happening. I don't think I've ever felt this way before, but I felt like balling my eyes out and standing up and cheering at the same time. I think it is because I have a counseling background and the film did an incredible job of capturing the essence of inner child healing. Throughout the film, Chiron had a hard time accepting love. He didn't quite know how to react when Juan and Teresa showed him love and unconditional regard. Even as an adult he was still quiet, shy and somewhat unsure of himself. When he finally allowed himself to receive love at the end of the film I was SO incredibly moved by the way the director cut the scene (he really should have won "Best Director"). The director didn't hang too long on "Black" and Kevin, but instead quickly cut to young Chiron (the wounded child that was still lingering inside of "Black") on the beach -- but when the child looks back he appears a little brighter and on his way to becoming whole again. The child within him is healing. I'm tearing up even as I write this, but when the child looks back I also felt like cheering for him, "You made it, kid! You're going to be alright!" It was truly one of the most beautiful and moving things I've ever seen on film.
    The second point is the main issue I had with the film "Precious" (and why I deeply appreciated "Moonlight"). "Precious" was a good film, but I think it would have been much more valuable if we had gotten to see how she healed. The film was basically just...a bunch of horrible things happen to this young woman...the end. If people connect to the character than it's doubly important that people be shown the process of how she got through it. In that sense, "Moonlight" was everything "Precious" wasn't.

    I had to come back here to say that because of this review I went to the movies. I even went to watch it again. Totally agree with your reviews from here on. I also want to add that people compare Moonlight to Boyhood, others talk about race issues and LGBT community struggle. I didn't see none of that. I think it had much more in common with films like Sue(1997), House of Sand and Fog, Mother and Child(2009), and other movies where the protagonist is mega introverted and struggles with unbearable loneliness. This is one of those films about the others, those who didn't find their tribe/group yet, and may never find it... One of the actors said something like that in an interview and it stuck in my head...

    Love your review. As with Loving this film gets a lot of it's power and impact because of understated and subtle acting. Moonlight is such an amazing but depressing movie. As a heterosexual black young man myself born in 1998 from Lakemba, New South Wales, Australia with healthy positive masculinity I absolutely have no problem if boys and men around the world want to show their emotions because we are human beings with emotional feelings. Being bisexual and being homosexual does not make you less of a man & there are bisexual plus homosexual teenage boys & men who are masculine around the world. We males really need to show empathy for boys and men & listen to how they feel inside instead of mocking them & rejecting them by claiming that they are not manly or masculine enough because that is called bullying & it is a dangerous game. What is a man? He is a human male adult enough said men do not have to prove their manhood because that is a huge lie made up by old school gender activist bigots. As a mature young man myself plus other men around the world we do not have to prove our masculinity because that is just machismo not masculinity, so to all my fellow brothers out there just be a compassionate mature gentleman that is it end of story. To all my fellow human brothers and sisters around the world always remember be genuine & take care of one another.

    Finally managed to watch it, and really feel that the movie was OK. I disagree that its a masterpiece. My main issues with the film are the lack of character development, changing actors for each chapter, slow pacing, contrasting music choices were distracting. On the plus side, the acting was pretty good and the cinematography was well done. I get the feeling that if you have a connection to the issues it might resonate more with you, but for me I didn't feel it. The lack of development undercut bringing me into the world.

    • @toekneebeeears
      @toekneebeeears 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I aM I don't think anyone has experienced it. Or if they have, it's extremely rare. Like most "identities" today they are fads. They are completely fabricated.

    • @waltonrene75
      @waltonrene75 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Toxic-Pop they are not fabricated at ALL man. my best friend came out 2 years ago and he struggled coming out in fear of judgement and opinion. he liked women as a kid, but as a teen he became attracted to men whilst still holding onto that attraction to women, so you see the conflict within? I can only imagine how frustrating and confusing that would be.

    Movie was alright.. definitely doesn't live up to the hype.. i found a some problems with the film..the circling/shaky camerawork was annoying.. very slow pacing... some important characters the movie just left them to dry.. did not care for the actor who played the 3rd Chiron.. didn't look nothing like him and the feeling wasnt there like it was with the first two Chirons... overall it left me feeling that i wanted more... B- movie

    The only thing about this film that was "very good" was a teacher who wouldn't take any mess in his classroom. The rest of the characters in this movie were degenerates
    A degenerate drug dealer, a truly degenerate mother, a degnerate "friend" who has sex with the other dude one day and then beats him up the next. A bully who pushes people into violence on school property.
    And the kid grows up to be a degenerate drug dealer.

    Young black poor and gay in the ghetto... So original.. and his "mentor".. was a drug dealer by the way... .. also this is common for production companies to push this bullshit... Usually the main character isn't gay.. that's a twist.. but the Hollywood agenda to normalize gay and reinforced stereotypes is sickening... I just felt the film was so disgusting... Just my opinion...

    • @Saint0999

      Why is it disgusting? Because he was gay? TF?

    • @blackfocusfilms1534
      @blackfocusfilms1534 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and No .. What's disgusting is this sort of constant stereotypical representation of black people in Hollywood. Being gay .. isn't what makes this film disgusting .. but when you look at film and television as a whole...Hollywood seems to be pushing a gay agenda to the black community. Which is my opinion. To each his own..

      MJF&P Wouldn't leaving the film at being black and poor in Miami also be "pushing an agenda"? Listen, your ignorance is revolting. As a feminine gay black person, I can tell you for certain that there are PLENTY of masculine gay/bi black men. To assume that because a film FINALLY features a gay undertone while maintaining a compelling narrative is "feminizing", that shows your lack of knowledge of the diverse complexities of human to human emotion and relationships. Please stop with the "pushing the gay agenda" bullshit because it's factually flawed. For EVERY film featuring an authentic LGBT relationship, there are hundreds more featuring a heterosexual relationship. If anything, gay people have every right to talk about straight people pushing a "straight agenda". Go watch the film and learn about good storytelling, cinematography, and acting.
