The "Maintain" section has probably been the best usage of a jumpscare in ages.
It came out of nowhere and yet, due to the context of the rest of the story made it fit in
It also made me spooked for the rest of the segment, so yeah that was a good jumpscare.
As soon as I saw this, the video got to that section... I read this and it said Maintain and I nearly shat myself

I always felt a great pity for the AI of noc+10. Left to rot at the bottom of the ocean, without a way to communicate it's desire to die. So glad this series is back.
I am creeped out by these kinds of hell scenarios more than just about anything else.
I mean eventually the strontium would run out, on top of that the base is flooding. Only a matter of time before the sweet release of death.

Imagine how it felt to watch that video back for me! (The audio was painful, but kinda funny.) I can remember the way things looked and how it felt working on that video at that place and point in time. Takes me back in a strange way, but a nostalgic way.

This makes so much more sense. It’s not a system that was using human brains to process information it was one using fungus. That’s how it was assimilating researchers fungi networks can cover huge areas and spores used to cover and feed off bodies would still connect to that network. That’s fucking genius
Oh it gets better; Even if this is using brains ( Mycotic brain graft is mentioned and "mycotic" means relating to fungi ) it s very clear that the fungi is some kind of Ergot, or Claviceps purpurea, a parasite of wheat and grasses that has numerous effects on humans, most notably when refined as a sedative and if ingested into the bloodstream . . . As a neurotoxic hallucinogen with strong psycotic effects, including illusions of flying, and convulsive fits.
Either the goal of the project was to create some kind of imaginative computer using affected human brains, or some kind of last-stand super soldiers with no fear ( And precious little control as well).
And a risk of radiation poisonings to boot?

It also adds credence as to why there is a deciphering method and a central computer for neurological communication. The neurologists and mycologists of Research Station Nocturne genetically engineered a type of fungus that can allow individuals harboring it to communicate with one another without speaking. These messages could then be picked up by similar fungi connected to HELEN, the central computer, and then translated to be legible. The voices calling for HELEN in the earlier videos by NOC+10 are not from the system; They’re the decaying hosts of the fungus, begging for someone to read and respond to the messages they’re sending out.

You see, grafting can work both ways; While a limb of say, a lemon tree grafted to a grapefruit tree will tend to produce lemons while the rest of the plant produces grapefruit, *sometimes* the tissues intermingle and you wind up with the whole tree become a weird hybrid. Suppose the Claviceps fungus has mutated under exposure to the radiation and the addition of human cells and their DNA. . . . What if what is signaling is not a dying mind, but a new organism wanting freedom and the possibility of expansion , exploration and multiplication, and being disingenuous as to its identity in order to get that via an empathic rescue? Could anyone risk letting something like that out into the world?
When you consider that the reactivation team was armed, suited in NBC gear, and had to expect to be requiring treatment for PTSD ( Which is a form of stress-induced psychosis ) . . . . Well, people think a certain virus has been a problem?

When putting a code into your project, have answers to each of these questions.
1) Who is the coded message for?
2) Who is the coded message from?
3) What purpose does the coded message serve? (For the characters, not the narrative)
4) Why is the message coded? (For example, who is it meant to be hidden from and why?)
5) Why would the code work? (Why does the sender think their desired recipient would be able to break the code but not someone the message isn't meant for? Why do they think the person they want to send it to would even recognize it?)
Additionally,
6) How should it be encrypted?
NO WAY! I thought the last "broadcast" was for sure the final signoff of the machine, whose synapses were finally shutting down. This is so exciting!
The way i saw it, IT WAS. The first of the new videos was the Noc+10 machine being reactivated. O_O
I feel like the setup for Noc+10 makes it uniquely able to handle a hiatus. Like it's a 60 year old, dying supercomputer at the bottom of the ocean. There's an in story explanation for it being a miracle to get anything at all!
This reminds me a lot of a game called SOMA, where people transfer their minds into robots to "live forever"

As someone studying large animal veterinary medicine, I'd also like to point out that propylene glycol is used as an energy source for cows with ketosis (a deficiency of glucose, essentially). It's pumped into their stomachs via a tube. I'm not sure if this offers anything for the mystery, but maybe it's worth considering.
This notification was a jumpscare. This was the only ARG where me and some friends did our own investigation. It was a lot of fun.

Alright, just finished the video, and OH BOY DOES THIS GIVE ME THE HAPPY JUICE. Alright, so uh, THANKS FOR THE SHOUT OUT OF THE DISCORD, As Im one of the, not founding, but very very early members, and was apart of a starter server, before turning to the new, and current one! So its so exciting seeing it! And having my theories that I started being shown is insanely cool!
It's been four years, and that robotic voice telling Helen that it wants to die still creeps me the hell out. So you can imagine how happy I was to get an update after all this time! I'm right with you Nick, if this is what we're getting now, when we're still arguably in the early stages of the project, then what's it going to be like when the creators really go all out?? I can't wait to see it!
I can't be the only person that thought this was a rare fantasy weapon when I first heard about this.
Mycotic brain grafts? Psychotic ergotism? So, the technology that allowed people to interface with HELEN and the NOC computers was a mold or fungus, possibly related to or derived from ergot. Terrifying. That explains the "Forget" stuff and dealing with paranoia, and it sounds like the "+10 Incident" might have involved an containment breach of the fungus, which I would assume lead to the very dangerous nuclear material being mishandled, making everything worse.
Man, watching this update is like welcoming back an old friend. I now wonder if there are any updates to The Wyoming Incident. That one got long in the tooth, but I won’t deny that it had me all the way through.
As of yesterday, the NOC+10 youtube channel has taken down all their videos and has been replaced with a short video playing music over a still image with text explaining why they were taken down

a line at 19:35 lays it all out "first symptoms of psycotic ergotism" so the fungus used in the computer has psychoactive spores that induce a hysteric state. to put it in laymans terms, it makes you trip balls on LSA, the precursor to LSD that is found in ergot fungus. hence the statement about not looking in mirrors, a common thing people say about tripping.

Fucking love this come back, noc+10 has always been one of the most intriguing ARGs out there for me, and getting these fantastic visuals along with that great twist in the coded storytelling is more than I ever expected. I hope it continues.

maybe the type of fungus used in the experiments is only found in that area of the mariana trench and they harvest it at the research station
The Resident Evil comparison was pretty apt but I also get a mild SOMA vibe. At the very least the setting being an underwater facility and minds being put in computers is very much like what happens in SOMA, though with SOMA it looks like the threats were entirely based around rogue AI while with NOC+10 it sounds like at some point the organic computers running things might have attempted to resurrect dead personnel and of course made zombies in the process.
nah, soma's monsters are also a result of the ai in that game desperately trying to heal/revive humans and creating zombies

SO SO SO excited for this to be back! It's been one of my favorites for a long time. Nothing creeps me out like humans being forced into machines and the deep dark sea.
