It implies Mia and Rosemary still have a journey ahead of them, as well as cementing that (presumably) Ethan Winters is dead for good. The reason why I think it works so much better than similar situations in a lot of other games is how it contrasts with how much relative power you have throughout the rest of the game. Generally you have pretty sufficient firepower to deal with anything in your way, even against giant monster bosses. Not to mention you just came off of fighting a giant gross tentacle dragon-thing at the end of the Manor. So having all that power now gone, you feel even more helpless than you would in a game like Amnesia where you can never fight at all.

To me, the most interesting aspect of House Beneviento is how it manages to truly unite both Ethan and the player in terms of shared fears and memories through their shared experience of RE7.
When the player enters the house and begins picking up on the similarities to RE7, Ethan is feeling the exact same thing, because both parties have a connection back to that locale. When Ethan reacts with disgust to the mannequin of Mia, the player feels the same way, because both parties view Mia as a character that we have sacrificed greatly for. It really is cool to see Capcom acknowledge that a lot of the people who were interested in RE7 will have returned for RE8 and actively work that into their level design.
Thank you very much for making this video - I've been waiting for it ever since RE8 released, because I knew that only you would you be able to give the project an honest, down-to-earth review amidst all the jokes and memes. I really appreciate how much time you put in to these analyses, and I'm very happy to hear that you enjoyed the game!

Something very important to note about the after-credits scene is that as the jeep Rose is in drives away from the camera, a person can be seen walking along the side of the road before the game cuts to black for the last time. By editing some files, people have enabled flycam during that last scene, and have confirmed the figure walking along the road is actually Ethan, and his exact model from the moment of his death. Given the way Eveline was able to manifest as a presence in Ethan's mind even three years after the events in Dulvey, it's safe to say Ethan's consciousness still exists inside the mutamycete in Rose.

i remember watching somewhere sometime ago that Capcom wanted to reel back the scares in Village because they deemed biohazard a little *too* scary in general and this was aiming to bring a more balanced experience that can be enjoyed by more people, respectable decision, turned out great, however it would be awesome if they decided to go FULL swing in RE:9 and make the whole game as scary as house Beneviento, just a heart-gripping experience all the way trough, could it perhaps be a risky play? sure, but it is fun to think about what lies beneath the "what could have been" and im all for it if it ever happens

@@AxisCorpsRep I think it's worth remembering, though, that Resident Evil has always been somewhat scary for its time, but being scary is only a fraction of what the series is. From the very start it's been just as much about action, weapons, shooting, boss fights, puzzles, item management, larger-than-life characters, over-the-top stories and explosions. Making a true, pure, maximum fear horror game would definitely be awesome - but it also wouldn't be Resident Evil, and I think it's fair for people to complain about the series going "too far" into fear when that isn't really what the series has ever been about.
I agree that I'd love to see what the team can really do for a full game, they've shown more than enough that they have a masterful grasp of crafting fear experiences, I'm just also an RE fan from the beginning who understands and shares the desire of those who love what RE has always been. I think a good idea could be them alternating third-person classic RE style (like RE2 Remake) with first-person modern horror focus between games.

In RE7 everything felt pretty scripted and there was the general thought for me the whole game of "I wonder if I get to kill them now." One horror chase section was more than enough for me, I enjoyed exploring the Village itself after the bosses and killing mobs way more. I hope they keep stepping in the direction of survival horror instead of just horror. Put a gun in my hand and give me a chance and I'll love it. On the topic of house Beneviento, I really love that it seems almost PT-eqsue. As a huge Silent Hill fan, I was really disappointed when PT was cancelled, like many other people. But the scenes in house Beneviento, especially once the baby is introduced, almost brought back that same claustrophobic confusion that Silent Hills had. Dark, confusing, cramped hallways. The freaky ambience of the baby "crying" and "laughing". Even the baby itself sorta reminded me of the baby in the sink in PT.

My playthrough of House Beneviento was slightly different in the baby reveal, not in how it was done, but in how I responded to it. When I went down the hall, and heard the baby start moving towards me, instead of giving it time to get into the light and see it clearly, I instantly sprinted my ass back, and just ran, remembering the locker I could hide in. And I spent the rest of the time being as careful as possible. I got to the stairs, and heard it coming down, and ran to the bed and hid under it. My first clear look was just the bottom part of it, and I was terrified. And then finally, when I got to the elevator, I hid in the room next to it, and waited for the baby to come then move away, so my first actual look of the whole thing wasn’t until the Elevator jumpscare, and I gotta say, that extra element of me not seeing it for so long made the pay off so fucking rewarding. I love this game so much.

i watched a full no-commentary playthrough of this game, and the player died only once: to the fucking baby thing. i think it caught even them off guard, even though they clearly already played the game.

I'm glad you enjoying House Beneviento and really the game as a whole as much as my friends and I did. Honestly, I never died to the baby until I decided to show it to the friends that weren't going to play the game. I DID show them the entirety of the house instead of just the baby, but I was mostly speedrunning it at that point so it doesn't really get the full experience since the puzzles are always the same. You don't even need the silver key down there.

Would another personification of the fear of a child becoming a monster be the lords themselves? What with all but one of them having a final monstrous form and being a part of her makeshift family of mutants. Not to mention Heisenburg actually turning on Miranda and attempting to kill her by making an entire "metal army", similar to how Eveline transformed the Baker family in pursuit of her own goals. Heisenburg was also kidnapped as a very young child by Mother Miranda as an attempt to make a vessel for Eva, like how Rose is kidnapped as a baby by Miranda for the same purpose.

40:30 That blood splatter on the wall is identical to one in RE2: Remake! Next to the Dark Room save room, there's a bench covered in blood by the vending machines. It's the same pattern. I just randomly decided to reinstall RE2R today to try out the randomizer and because of this video I thought the splatter looked super familiar. Sure enough, same one! Good way to reuse assets without it being too noticeable.

You know Capcom's doing good with their games when Nick does a video on both of the sequels. Personally I like Biohazard better than Village, and honestly it's because of the tapes, I love found footage style things and thus Clancy became an immediate favorite for me, in fact, my only problem with Biohazard was that the killed him in the "Happy Birthday" tape.

beneviento manor is good once, afterwards its a tedious scripted event that makes subsequent playthroughs a drag. Also Heisenberg's factory overstays its welcome. Wish we got to explore the upper floors of the castle you see from its rooftop or maybe extended Moreau's fishing village area that was cut and was pretty much became just a tunnel towards a boss fight

House Beneviento was the most stressful, horrifying, and shocking experience I had in recent memory. Possibly even my life when it comes to the horror genre.
On my blind run I was following what trailed from the autopsy table down the hall, completely missing that it was an umbilical cord. Then I heard the sound of the baby coming, and I stood there wondering what I was hearing. As soon as it got into the light, my jaw and controller both dropped and I sat there in shock over what I was seeing. Thus was my first death in the game, eaten alive and whole by a giant, malformed fetus.
I sat there quietly for about a minute and then shut the game off for a bit. Just something about seeing that baby made me so uncomfortable that I could not continue until I forced myself to endure it later.
Then of course it started laughing, and saying momma and dada and I’m thinking “Oh cool it gets worse!”
