Much better way to travel than on a plane!! Beautiful scenery.
The USA is HUGE! I was born on the east coast and have lived here my whole life, but there is still so much I haven't seen. I've always wanted to do a cross-country trip by train. Thank you for documenting your journey.
Have you ever traveled from Moscow to Vladivostok by train?
@@Kshahdoo67 I walked from Moscow to Vladivostok
Even Russia has highspeed rail..
Канада и Россия больше)))
@@atombomb31458 а я на лыжах !!))))
As an Aussie tourist, our first ever time travelling overseas was to visit our friend in Ohio in 1989. We landed in San Francisco (7 days before the quake) and trained our way on a sleeper for 3 days to Chicago. Best trip ever. We travelled for 6 weeks within the USA on an Amtrak Pass. Chicago to Mansfield, Ohio. Our friend drove from Colombus to pick us up in Mansfield. We had 8 days in Columbus and then flew to Cleveland and caught the train to Buffalo. Niagara Falls to New York. New York to Washington. Washington to New Orleans. Had to fly from New Orleans to Las Vegas. Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Flew from LA to Hawaii and then home. If time permits, train is my first choice. We were able to see so much and met so many people.
So you have time traveled? Have you ever been in a Delorin time machine?
You've seen more of my country than I have easily!😂😂
@I-Self Lord and Master someone having a bad day, shithole! Are you always such a shit head? Was Australia that bad of a experience? If your attitude was the same as this reply, I'm glad you were pissed off because we don't need your shit here..........
@I-Self Lord and Master You're a sad troll that needs some real help, I actually pity those in your life.
You had a wonderful trip to America! So very happy for you! Hope I can do the same some day in touring your country...
I made this trip a yr before pandemic till chicago , it was summer & it was gorgeous , from emeryville till utah, its beautiful , going through the rockies in the observation deck, simply amazing , saw the wild horses near the lake, crossing the huge rivers , mountains , the plains, the desert , its a ride to remember .
what was the price? please.
but wear mask all the trip is crazy...but dine room is ok kkkkkkk
Currently now in 2024 masks are optional on all Amtrak trains in the US. I am not sure about the Amtrak trains that enter Canada what is their policy about masks.
There's no better way to see our great country than by rail
That's great that you said that because America needs highspeed rail....
There's no better way to see any great country than by rail. Greetings from down under.
Brought to you by Chinese slaves
Very true!
Maybe Japan can do that, because the Japanese has bullet trains. Congress, unfortunately, has allocated a pittance toward passenger rail service. This is the one thing that I agree with Biden on!
I did coach from NYC to Sacramento and thoroughly loved the whole trip. I was the sole occupant of the double seat set up for 98% of the trip and slept quite well. I love the train !
I'll take single occupancy any day!! I like the quiet n peace of mind without worrying about inconveniencing anybody else or the other way around.
Yes, I know. I am *justifiably* concerned about offending others. Was glad for the Roomette. It was *quiet* and *peaceful.*
Coach is pretty sweet, but I had a ROTTEN brief experience my first trip from DC to chicago in coach. Dude's smell was so foul, I literally couldn't breathe properly sitting next to him. A few minutes after we started rolling, I discreetly asked the assistants to find another empty seat, and they did!! Trip was smooth sailing from there! Love coach!
@Repent and believe in Jesus Christ bwhaaa
I've taken that exact NYC to San Francisco a total of five times. Beautiful ride, great food, and the scenery was SPECTACULAR. I'm now priced out of that trip,,, retired now and on a fixed income. Just one more time, is actually on my bucket list.
you already did 5 times do something else. go the vegas!
You like to travel? Go to Japan and ride a real train...
😀😃👋👋
On fixed income---Here is the deal Rail Pass for $299 for 30days 10 travel segments ! Did that 2 years ago !
Thank you for not playing music on the video, this is one of the best videos I’ve watch, I probably will watch it again!
The US is absolutely beautiful. It's stunning.
I was a BNSF Engineer on a coal train out of Denver that uses the same track as Amtrak, a single main track. One night, the Eastbound Amtrak Zepher had a problem with their lead engine. Between the Amtrak Engineer and the Dispatcher, an attempt was made to set their lead engine on a siding. I don’t know much about Amtrak engines, but with their lead unit dead, it took several hours to restore the second unit and move the train. One BIG problem was that the second unit was facing the wrong way! However, they managed to set out their lead unit, but, for whatever reason, they had lost control of their second unit again. The siding was plenty long enough to handle their entire train, but they managed to stall it with four cars still on the main track. By this time, I was in a siding waiting for Amtrak, and it had been around five hours. Lots of drama and colorful lingo was being exchanged on the radio between Dispatch and Amtrak. Then Dispatch directs Amtrak to disembark their passengers and load them up in busses to continue to Chicago. After nearly twelve hours, BNSF sent two locomotives to hook onto the rear of the Amtrak train, shove it forward and hook up their defective lead unit then haul the Amtrak train back to Denver, about fifty miles. I was relieved about four hours later by another crew, sixteen hours on that train for me, and had only gone about seventy-five miles.
I live in San Francisco, and a trip to New York on Amtrak is on my "bucket list."
I've lived in New York and San Francisco and I strongly recommend you take this trip. I've done most of it 5 times.
I'm in the UK and it's on my list too. I drove C2C twenty years ago; it was cheap enough. Next time, in luxury!
I live in San Francisco, too. I've taken Amtrak Train via Business Class to Portland on business trip and must say, was not only pleasantly surprised by their great service and delicious food, but was very comfortable and loved the power outlets and WiFi onboard. Also, took their train to Socal and also to Las Vegas ------> Aces!! Must go!! =-)
@@Mrbeahz1 how long it took it the get there i am planing to go out from New York to California? But I am afraid of time
@@Amreekisheikh lol!!! Yeah if you get on an American train you better definitely have time,..lol!!! This is America not Japan..
For me train stations are magic places because one minute you are in Downtown, surrounded by people, vehicles and lots of noise; you cross the doors, walk a little and there you are, sitting in Regal solitude and surrounded by coziness. No noise, no pickpockets, no nothing, just peace and excitement at what lies ahead. Beautiful video. Thank you.
Thank goodness you concentrated on scenery instead of detailed look at every inch of the sleeping accommodations. I've done this trip out and back twice, love it. Also ridden many other routes. The true Amtrak dining car is exceptional; the "flexible" maybe a step above airline. Amtrak will be truly recovered when all over night routes have real dining cars, even in the east!
Amtrak will NEVER recover what it butchered. Amtrak butchered the national passenger rail system when it assumed the operation of all passenger rail service in 1971. In 1971, Amtrak eliminated about 60 percent of the routes, schedules, trains and all connecting trains. The MIdwest suffered the most from the cut with the complete elimination of North/South trains. Before Amtrak there was a train almost every hour between Chicago and New York, both express and local. Amtrak reduced that to one daily train between NYC and Chicago. And there were several rail lines to choose from if you were travelling from Chicago to San Francisco with different departure times. So if you missed one train another would be leaving soon on another rail line and route. There were also "thru sleepers and coaches" that could be hooked onto a connecting train upon arrival. Amtrak has eliminated all "thru sleepers and coaches."
I have made this trip several times each way (except from-to Boston, not NYC). This was the route that made my wife fall in love with train travel. And yes, I would do it again.
My wife and I did the trip in 1989.
Your film brought back a lot of memories.
Without doubt the best way to see American and meet its friendly citizens.
We have travelled all over the world since but remains the best trip we have ever done.
I've been dreaming of taking that trip for years. Train one way and a vehicle back again.
Mainly to see the landscape and nature.Visit smaller places and town's.
Thank's for the ride 👍

Really enjoyed that, thank you. The scenery is spectacular, it's amazing that the US has so many different climates, what a country!
I enjoyed this documentary, I am half the world away from these nice places, hope to see this clip again and again, thanks ......................
Ah the California Zephyr... I just did that trip last year. One of the best decisions of my life. Where the quality of the food and the people you meet is as excellent as the views you'll spot on the trip. I'll be taking it again very soon for sure.
DC. Yyxs,,ay,,yqyaaawq
Unlike what you experience on airplane that nowadays can be worse than city bus.
Cost plz?
@Ammisse Essaid hey, uhh. Well lemme think. I got off at Grand Junction Colorado, so that might have been about 800 bucks for 1st class zephyr tickets... but it depends on when you go and how far you go so maybe 1 grand first class for the outbound trip from Chicago to California. The return trip is much much cheaper even in a roomette. That one was only like 400 or something.
I really love this video. I felt like I was in the train while watching the whole journey.
What an absolutely wonderful trip - thank you, Dylan, for sharing this epic journey with all your viewers!

bravo zulu ... when i graduated from coast guard boot camp, i went home to florida to gather my things and then went via amtrak like you all have done. if memory serves me right, i left from winter haven florida to washington dc then cross country to california. thank you for video you posted, it brings back good memories.
What a trip! It felt like I was on the Amtrak Train. Loved it!
In 1994 I travelled by train FROM Cheyenne WY TO Galesburg, then bus to Springfield IL. After several days in Springfield, I went by train to Chicao, where I boarded the Lake Shore Limited to Depew, where I stayed with friends for 5 days, then back on the Lake Shore Ltd to NYC. All in January/February. I have constant, great memories of that trip - in the American winter, by myself and then flying back to Australia. Wonderful memories and this video brought it all back for me, wallowing in nostalgia! Thank you!
Absolutely a wonderful trip and way to cross the U.S. It sure beats sitting in a jammed up 767 with your knees up your nose. While the train is slower, it is so restful. Thank you for the great video!
You could book business class on that plane at half the cost of the train ride. Train travel in the US is a travesty.
why a 767
@@sd8313 I traveled on business for years, not just in a 767, but the 757, 737 and many others. I never liked it, but I had a job to do. My employer would not put me in first class or business class. As I advanced in the company I began traveling by train. I enjoyed the slower pace. I was able to get up and walk around, easily go to the restroom, grab a meal, sleep in comfort and see the countryside. I simply learned, slower is better.
@@wythetrumpet6419 yeah no i completely agree just asking why you singled out the 767, especially considering it's an uncommon(at least compared to before), though unremarkable plane
@@wythetrumpet6419 I think ravellibg across the US by train is great if one has the time. In your circumstances I guess it was possible to get a lot of work done. These days there's a lot of waiting around at airports prior to boarding the plane.
That light dusting of snow is so beautiful
Did that trip in 98..it was a blast and the scenery was incredible
Wonderful experience. Great narration. Thank you
It’s amazing that you travel 3000 miles and still remain in the same country
Best country in the world 🌎
Excellent video, not only a terrific geography lesson, but also very entertaining. The presentation was neither too short or too long. I now have another bucket list to do. THANKS!
Well done! Great cinematography & the narration was informative & opinionated without being remotely negative or intrusive. Again, well done 👍🏽
Thank you for posting this. I live very near the Emeryville station in California, so I walk by there all the time going to IKEA for meatballs, and wave to the train passengers. I've taken the Eurostar from London to Paris, but I've never taken one of our own trains right here in the US. Thank you for the inspiration! Glad you had a safe journey~
Thank you for showing the views from the windows. So many other video want to show only the inside of the train. In fact one video shows the guy walking up and down the stairs at least four time. Again thank you for showing the real reason to travel by train. There is so much to see outside of the cities by train.
Adorei esse vídeo, foi um grato prazer o TH-cam indicar essa espetacular viagem...muito BOM. Rio de Janeiro - Brasil.😍
What a spectacular views I lost sometimes in its must be once in a lifetime experience thanks for the wonderful video
You captured the resonance of the locomotives' exhaust very well.
we went from Roch to SLC in 2006 , I loved it , would do again in a heartbeat. We have also taken amtrak to Florida from roch to sebring..........oh I love the train . So lucky . Thanks for sharing, brought back good memories !
You were so lucky, you saw 3 of Amtraks rare heritage locomotives! In Albany the locomotive leading your train was 100, the Midnight Blue 50th Anniversary locomotive, then the locomotive on your California Zephyr was 184, the 40th Anniversary Phase 4 locomotive, and in Denver you passed 130, the 40th Anniversary Phase 2 locomotive. That is so rare
I have been to several Amtrak stations, and my favorite is Baltimore’s. It’s small, quaint, lovely, green ceramic tiled, antique, understated station. It was also NOT crowded.
You can practically see the 1920s or earlier in that station. ❤
When I took the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago back in March of 2022, communal meals were allowed and it was fun to talk with different passengers at each meal.
Thanks so very much for this certainly different way to see America and as you say, better than at 30,000 feet.
What amazed me was the lack of crowds on the stations, the wide open spaces and no cases of "leaves on the line".
When we consider that the first people to take this route were on wagons and horses it really brings it home the size of the United States. Amazing trip and what a great way to relax and travel.
This trip has been added to my bucket list. Thank you for the video!
Do it. It is the easiest money I have ever spent.
I went on the Zephyr last year in April with my mom. It was the 1st over night train ride we've ever done and first cross country trip. We both had seprate roomettes across from eachother so we got all the views. It was amazing and id do it again easily. We went from Denver to San Fran.
Always a pleasure to travel virtually with you. I hope to make this journey one day.
I have only taken the local Metro in the DC area, and the MARC train in Montgomery County MD. I love to watch your videos as I feel like I get to travel to places that I may never see in my lifetime. I want to travel all over the United States and Amtrak is one of the ways I want to see my home country.
Birmingham, Alabama to New Orleans is a fantastic 6 hour trip.
I once rode Metro to Union Station and took Amtrak to BWI Mashall Station to catch a flight to Denver. It was before MARC added weekend and holiday service on the Penn Line to Baltimore. BWI station is served by both and caught the shuttle to the terminal. Only problem was I got there 3 and half hours before my flight to Denver and there wasn't much open in the airport on Chistmas day.
Iskoristi svoj san, proputuj ameriku, dok se ne raspadne kao stara SFRJ. Samo gledanje ovog videa je fantasticno.
This was a delightful trip however, the last time I was on a train was when I was 5 years old during a field trip in kindergarten, I am now 74 years old. Been on many jets and buses but no trains. Thanks for sharing this trip with all of us.
If you remember, the trains were faster and more efficient before Amtrak.
i recently travelled to NYC from my home in Edinburgh Scotland. I took short haul Amtrack journey's to both Philly and Boston. Nice day trips but nothing compared to this adventure. This gives me inspiration for a future visit.
Yes Great Long Ride put nice. Great things to see on the railroad.
I have done the Emeryville to Salt Lake City part of this trip and crossing the Sierras and the Great Basin was very impressive. Thanks for posting this video, it was well made and very enjoyable.
Very beautiful and educational vedio, I am from uk,I love ❤ this.
God bless you and your lovely family
I was traveling on Amtrak (roommate) from NY to Miami last summer and I had a wonderful experience. It was a little bit pricey but I didn't regret I chose Amtrak for my journey
Nice to see these things the journey to different places , see the views all around & see high tech trains👍👍👍👍
Brilliant video! It really highlights the size and beauty of the US.
I AM DOING THIS! I live in Cali near SF so I will be doing this in reverse. I'm in my 20s so now is better than ever. Thanks for the inspiration.
Dylan.. we just did The Coast Starlight northbound up the west coast and the community seating is back in the diner. We felt the conversations with strangers added to the experience of the trip.
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
I 100% recommend the IC3/IR4 multiple units between Copenhagen and Hamburg, the route has some good scenery and the seats are really comfortable.
I will consider. 💚🌍
Thanks for a great review (as always!). I've not taken the train since the Pandemic, so excited to ride from Chicago to Tucson later this summer. I think it's the best way to see the USA. Then again, I'm more about the trip than the destination. Hope you have good travels in your future, looking forward to seeing them.
An articulate, informative and interesting video. Thank you Dylan. 👍
New York to San Francisco, from hell to hell.
Like in the my soul good movie I seen when I was little boy in 1978 in Bucharest, Romania, Silver Streak(1976) Very, very good movie, I have this in my cinema at my home.
Yes, “communal” dining is back. I took the Zephyr and Southwest Chief in Sept/Oct and as always found that to be one of the best parts of train travel in the US. Unfortunately the dining car is still not available for coach passengers, like everyone else Amtrak is having trouble getting staffing back up to pre-pandemic levels. Dining was from the traditional menu, but those traveling from the Eastern US said they were still doing “flexible” dining.
I'm pretty sure the "flexible" dining was instituted on the east coast prior to COVID as a cost-saving measure, so I don't have a lot of hope that traditional dining will make a return there. Especially if there are staffing issues.
As long as they have mandate on shots
They will have huge problem with staffing
@@dennybarlau8065 lol, no.
@@dennybarlau8065 No. A mandate will decrease sick time.
@@153haring As you likely know now, the COVID vaccines did not affect the spread of COVID but may have reduced hospitalizations and deaths. So making the jab mandatory only succeeded in messing up the US economy.
It is a nice journey to travel by train ,very beautiful seminaries can see over the U tube channel. Thanks to everybody who assist to create this program
Going through Colorado into Northern Nevada is just what Id expected, so beautiful - definitely was the highlight of the video.
soon foreigners will invade it
When you go through Colorado you cross into Utah before Nevada
OMG I lived in Winter Park CO in the early 70's..
It was so great to see that on your wonderful trip!
Just added that to my bucket list!
Maravilhosa viagem por um meio de transporte magnífico !! Ótimo vídeo !!! Piracaia - SP 🇧🇷
Thanks for sharing your experience with us We will definitely try this too 👍🏾👍🏾
Great vid. I have have done both of these routes before and always recommend them to anyone who has not travelled by train before, especially the Cal Zephyr. I have a cross country trip coming up in Feb/March New York/LA/Portland/Vancouver BC. Taking in The Cardinal/South West Chief /Coast Starlight and The Cascades.
I’m grateful for Airplanes! That’s how I frequently travel to Las Vegas. Salute to the Airline Industry Employees!
At one time, there were four daily trains in each direction passing through Las Vegas. Amtrak eliminated ALL trains to Las Vegas making that zero trains a day. You have no choice but to stick to the airlines.
My best train rides were on hopped freights from St. Cloud, Minn. to Billings, Mont. & from Spokane, WA to Gary Ind. Incredible scenic vistas! Life can be an adventure if you put down yr damn phones!
@Patrick Goldsmith You said it all buddy ! Put those goddamn phones down . We are witnessing an entire generation of morons that cant function without a phone in their hands. I always thought about hopping a freight train but unfortunately never did it. I enjoy the Stobe ( R.I.P. ) the Hobo videos . He was killed by a train about 10 min from my house. It is an exciting but very dangerous way to travel. Not just because a train can run you over but also the fact that some of those trains wind up in some very bad areas. You dont know what kind of situation you will find yourself in . Safe travels.
SORRY HOW MUCH DO PAY 4 THE TRIP ?
@@josebarrera8245 more than business class on a plane costs 🙄
Thank you for the gorgeous video. I felt like I was on the journey in the train with you 😊.
I do miss the USA since I am now living in the Philippines 🇵🇭 for 13 years now after living in California for nearly 30 years
Many more beautiful journeys to come
If you're thinking about taking a trip like this, in particular the Chicago - Emeryville portion, I have two words of advice: do it! You won't regret it. I did Chicago to Emeryville in early March, and by happenstance, did it around the time of a full moon. Snow was on the ground from Iowa through the Rockies, and in the Sierras. It was a fantastic trip. Due to the full moon, I could watch out the window during nighttime and see an amazing snow-scape in the Iowa hills and the next night a gorgeous evening rock-scape in Utah. The food was great; and somehow tastes even better on the train. I've driven across the US, and while a road trip offers some interesting sights, the train gives you views that you'll never see from an Interstate, or even from a secondary road. I was in one of the rooms with bathroom and shower - very comfortable way to travel - but a roomette is almost as good and the view is the same. You could do a shorter trip, like Denver to Emeryville, just one night - this gets you the best of it. Or do Reno to Emeryville for a beautiful ride though the Sierras; that's not even overnight. One thing this excellent video didn't quite capture fully was the excitement when the train exits the Moffat tunnel after Denver, CO on the way to Winter Park, CO. You come out and all of a sudden you see snow covered mountains, and skiers sliding down them towards you. People let out a cheer in the viewing car when we exited the tunnel. It was truly something to see. I haven't done it, but the northern route to Seattle / Portland through Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Washington State / Oregon or the southern route to LA that swings down through the southwest including New Mexico and Arizona are also supposed to be excellent.
You trying to get people to robbed in Chicago
Thanks! A pleasant and informative video. Glad to notice that some things changed for the better. I regularly traveled between Boston and New York. Since 2016 Penn station has been changed from sleazy to attractive, I saw. Although I always took AMTRAK's top train, the Acela, first class, service varied greatly. I once went to the bar at 9.05 PM for a bottle of water, after a quick oversalty dinner. The staff was cleaning up and refuse to serve me: closed at 9 PM. What always struck me in the US that in spite of the high prices, the trains are so slow. Happy to be back in the heart of Western Europe, with its increasing network of high speed international trains.
Keep up the good work and inform us!
The glory days of train travel in the USA ended in the 1950’s replaced by the jet plane & automobile.
Great! When I come to my first visit to the US from here in Finland, I plan to travel by Amtrak from the east coast to the west coast along the main line!! :) Because I want to see as much of the United States as possible, and a train trip is a really good choice, as you can see :)
Thanks to you there is an opportunity to see the land beyond the ocean
Another awesome journey aboard the mighty Amtrak.
We took this route but on a much shorter trip. We were in Philly and wanted to go to Niagra Falls. So, we took the train from Philly to Penn Station in NY then same route to Buffalo in 9hrs. Great trip and experience.
A 10/10 rating from me,regarding your awesome Amtrak trip report, all the very best with your future travels !👍
Great trip and wonderful mountain scenery. The train must have felt cozy with all that snow outside. I felt bad for the person who had the medical emergency; they had probably been looking really forward to that trip.
The rocky mountains are the best part, even a whiteout blizzard is nothing when you're on rails.
Your journey reminded me of a short winter trip from Denver to Grand Junction, CO., I made about 35 years ago. It was such a great experience for me as a foreign student that time.
lot of hard work. Good Job . Keep em coming !
Wonderful pictures. I've done this a couple of times. Dining with other travelers made for a wonderful building of community through the journey. I'm glad those restrictions have been released (I hope) because it made the traveling so much more fun and interesting. But it's always an adventure!
I’ve ridden the Zephyr from east to west twice. Spectacular.
Stunning scenaries. Nothing like a train journey across a country to feel the scenes and meet people. Have included in my bucket list of things to do.. Thanks Dylan
CHUP KAAFIR BULLAY
Excellent presentation! You did a spectacular job!
What a nice and interesting traintrip! Fourty years ago i was twice in your country, the nature is overwhelming! greetings from the town of Middelburg (NL).
Thanks for sharing your cross country trip from New York to my hometown San Francisco. YOU ARE THE MAN!
That's a lovely trip! The food on that long haul portion looked very good as well. A $1200 fare for 2 and having a roomette is a great deal too. A hotel costs at least $300 a night without meals.
In the days of fast trains, AMTRAK is a ride into history.
On the California Zephyr, yes, the most scenic of Amtrak trains, in my opinion, the drive down from, or up to the Moffat tunnel is super spectacular, especially eastbound, at twilight, as the city below lights up.
It's been since i moved here from Denver that I've been there say 35 years now. I miss it badly. The hills , mountains , Evergreen, vail, aspin, Leadville, The springs , the whole of denver I used to wake up and look out the upstairs window to see Boulder 12 miles up the road.
Wow, this is a whole new level of traveling. The quality is insane. I really want to try this experience once in my life. Our railway company, the MÁV is in the middle ages compared to this. Greetings from Hungary. 😁👋🇭🇺❤️🇺🇸
A truly beautiful trip that I have made several times! California Zephyr takes a bit longer than the Southwest Chief to reach the west coast, but the scenery is certainly more superb!
Very well done, informative and fast paced. Excellent video with plenty of commentary of what I was watching.
Took Amtrak from Los Angeles to Chicago before attending the USC-Notre Dame football game. Just wanted to get an idea what it meant to the teams to travel that distance for a game before commercial flying was a thing. Very enjoyable!
Many thanks for the tip, some top scenes, like to see it in summer :)
I've traveled across the country on Amtrak in coach a couple times and for me is actually quite comfortable. If you travel in the off peak season (like you did), there will most likely be an empty seat next to you. The seats are huge and very comfortable. A huge drawback is the (lack of) food. As a coach passenger, you only have access to the Cafe car where they serve hot dogs, pizza, burgers, other microwaved food and a nice drink selection. Having this kind of food for 2-3 days can be difficult. And no refrigerator means you are kind of stuck with it.
Nice picture of the train in Reno, NV from the thumbnail... I live there!
Thankfully, they've recently added some new slightly less artery-clogging foods to the cafe menu, like cold sandwiches and wraps
And they are all very mediocre versions of those food items. Nice sandwiches like those available at any train station and even U or S Bahn platforms in Austria, Germany etc. would be way better. And they could certainly buy better versions of what they do sell (I did this trip in Jan 2022). Some Amtrak employees both on trains and in stations are horrible too. It's weird how many seriously bad experiences I had with both on just one trip. Never once anywhere in Europe and I've been all over it by train.
@@emjayay I'd just like to add that your experiences are hardly universal. I've been exceptionally lucky and over my occasional Amtrak trips throughout the years, I've never truly had a bad experience, and around 90% of employees I've encountered have been either excellent, average, or just very tired/stressed. The average passenger's experience likely falls between the extremes of ours.
@@emjayay We circumnavigated the country on Amtrak in May 2019. Superb on-board staff at all times. Food excellent until "flexible" on Capitol Ltd. What a come-down!!
I did both the Zephyr and the Chief from Chicago to the west coast pre Covid (and the Starlight down the coast). Coach had access to the dining car back then but I decided I didn't need to eat three full meals while being almost completely sedentary for three days, so I chose to eat only one meal a day in the dining car, either breakfast or lunch. I carried fruit and other healthy snacks with me in a backpack, which combined with a sandwich from the snack bar or the station during one of the longer servicing stops (Denver on the Zephyr or Albuquerque on the Chief), it was plenty for me. If I make the trip again and they still don't have dining car access for coach, I'd plan accordingly and pack enough to see me through it.
I made this trip via coach both ways. Loved it. Coach was good. Roomy to sleep. The best part was scenic car..spent most of my time there.
Amazing video, I did the same route from San Francisco to New York in 2019 it was an amazing experience and I loved the Bedroom Sleeper on Amtrak. FYI you could have saved yourself an uber ride as if you book your ticket to San Franciso (not Emeryville) your ticket includes a bus connection to Downtown via the Amtrak Thruway Connection service.
Good to know! Thank you
