You're using Starbucks beans/ grinds. NOTHING will ever make that a good coffee. I'm sure the AeroPress is a good system ( in fact I'm gonna go click that link and have a lil look) but when your base component is anything with SB printed on it then it's going to be a crap cup of coffee no matter what 😂

If you're only using the Amtrak-provided hot tap water, the coffee still won't be that great tasting. And bringing your own plug-in hot water carafe is not allowed either, AFAIK, due to limits on amperage draw for in-car electrical usage.

I did this trip alone in January 2022 in reverse from San Francisco all the way down to Fort Lauderdale, FL. I was in a bedroom all the way. I was lucky to get their credit card and the bonus points which made the cost embarrasingly low. That said, if you are paying standard pricing, it is extremely hard to justify the cost given the service, food, and regular delays of 10 plus hours. I can't believe there isn't a way to lower costs and retain the barely acceptable service thy already provide.
Also, I am so incredilbly happy you get this wonderfulz experience with your parents. I would have given anything if I could have shared it with mine....

So great to see you traveling with both your mum and dad on this one, Will, and welcome the whole family to the US! It's a very big place, ocean to ocean, and it was nice to see it via train with you and your family. I've often wondered what traveling by train would be like, and while it looks interesting, I love driving too much to give it up, lol.
I highly recommend returning to Utah to visit the 5 different National Parks in our state because they're quite beautiful, each in their own way. My family and I try to catch every National Park near where we vacation, and I have to say with each one I've learned a greater appreciation for how beautiful and varied the scenery is in every state.

I've done this trip before from Chicago to San Francisco, staying solo in a roomette and even stopped at the same coffee place at Denver station. Amazing journey and views, met a lot of people in the dining car, and the train was only four hours late. One of my favorite moments was we made a brief stop in a small town and the residents was having a live band concert near the tracks. When the train was passing by, I waived to them from my window, and everyone stopped and waived to us back.

I have traveled eight legs on the Empire Builder, California Zephyr, and the Southwest Express. I have had the bedroom on 4 legs and the roomette on 4. While in a roomette, I would have LOVED to have a toilet in my room, even if it is next to the bed. That is especially important in the middle of the night; it is also not very pleasant to follow some person who has just lit up the tiny bathroom. Also, I found the hallway coffee to be very good, each and every time, as well as the dining car food.

I did this exact trip back in 2022, but your trip was a lot less dramatic than mine. I incurred a 3 hour delay at Albany after the replacement locomotives wouldn't work, and then neither would the replacement replacement locomotive, so we had to reverse back to the station after about a mile of progress. On the Zephyr I got downgraded from a roomette to coach class which was as fun as that sounds, then we were delayed another 3 hours as we had to run at 15mph due to a tornado warning! Overall it was a fun and an interesting experience, mainly for the scenery, wildlife and people I met. This journey tells you the story of the USA. Coach class is much more social than rooms, so that was a positive. The observation car was the place to be if you're in coach, and also bring supplies as the cafe bar offering is a bit patchy. I dare you to this in Coach Trek ;)

I was happy to see at least three of my video stock shots, filmed in Glenwood Springs and canyon, used in this video. The first was the drone shot (with a little editing trickery) of the train in Glenwood Canyon. The next was the ground level shot of the train pulling into the station (filmed with a 500mm lens). The third shot was another ground level shot of the train leaving the station (a 35mm lens I think). I rarely get to see how my purchased stock shots are used. Thanks you, Barry, Outside Adventure Media

About the cost: I rode the Zephyr a few years ago, in a roomette, from Chicago to Calif. The first price that I was offered was too high. I kept looking until I got a price I could afford. I asked Amtrak employees about their favorite routes. The most beautiful they said was The Empire Builder, going from west to east. That train goes through the northern Rockies in daylight so you get more mountain viewing than the other way, which was good to know.

We live a short walk (literally like 8 blocks) away from the Emeryville station (SF end of this trip), and in early 2020, we booked the same back-to-back sleeper rooms to create a family suite for my wife, two kids, and myself on what was going to be a Boston-to-home return after a friend's wedding in Boston. The pandemic happened, the wedding was postponed and we had to cancel our trip. maybe one day we'll get another chance to do this. thanks for sharing your journey!

I want to try Amtrak cross country one day but at 6K, there's no way. I'd do it in coach and bring my own picnic basket but I need to lay flat. I wonder if they will ever exchange out some of those seats for lay flat seats like on a plane. That would work for me. I wonder who would book those seats and it occurs to me not all riders take the train from end to end. Therefore seats make sense. I also believe that my own food would be much more delicious than the things you got served. Running out of menu items is just unexcuseable considering the price you paid. The Canadian trains are so much better.
