  • On our drive to go pick up a new animal, we answered questions from viewers! Jessi goes into how animal enrichment is managed for the multitude of animals at the animal center, Augusto discusses his animal career, baby animal footage is shared, lots of good advice is given, and even the kids join in the conversation at the end!

    While they may not be the best option, a dog seat belt restraint that connects to a harness, dog booster seat (which should also have a tether that connects to a harness), or something similar that adapts the restraints used for humans in cars for dogs might be a good option for dogs that don't take to crates well. I got my dog when he was at least a year or 2 old, and he hated crates, we really tried to crate train him, but he just wouldn't do it. We travel every couple of months to visit my parents, I use a seat belt adapter for him on my passenger seat (he doesn't weight enough to trigger the airbag) and a set up to keep him comfy on a 4-6 hour car ride.

    I like these longer Q&A's & think it might work to do something similar during animal chores. It would depend on the chore & how your brain works.

    Thank you for talking about some of the harder parts of animal rescue. I work with pit bull rescue, and compassionate euthanasia is a hard part of the picture sometimes. So is saying "no" when we don't have the resources to adequately care for another dog. It's not as easy as tossing out another handful of food - and it's a hard thing to keep at the front of mind.

    In terms of crate comfort, I make sure my rats' crarrier always has treats, a small hide and bedding that smells of them. When going to the vet, I always bring two rats. That way, if anything gets stressful, they've got their buddy. Plus, it means everyone gets more experience going to the vet and it's not weird. I also like taking transit when possible. It means I can focus on them rather than driving.
    For longer trips, I have a larger carrier that I set up like a miniature cage with toys, bedding, hides, food and even a water bottle. I set it up the night before and let them explore it during playtime. They typically spend the whole 9 hour drive home for Christmas just doing their thing in there. The only difference in behaviour I notice is that they have a serious case of the zoomies after a whole day cooped up.

    Any chance we could get a video on some of the recent “pandemic pets” -namely how many people are realizing that a small number of chickens or ducks can be kept without a full size farm. You covered chickens before but maybe a video about ducks, geese, or swans? And alternative to chickens, quail, partridge, and peacocks? I know you might not have any of these animals yourself but i think people are finding more healthy lifestyles shared with animals and learning about them could be very helpful, and not just dogs and cats need adoption. (I have found myself rather in love with ducks since all this began 😆)

      @medea27 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The creators don't control the ads that play on their videos... TH-cam curates them based on the general channel genre & whether or not you have selected to have customised ads. Creators like AWM have limited control over how many ads are played & when they play (such as opting for 2-3 ads to play in a row every hour instead of 1 every 20mins) but they don't have any say in who the advertisers are unfortunately.

    Hey, Jessi. I was thinking of adopting a Parrotlet but while reading about them I read that they are very sensitive to respiratory issues. I have a tidy but incredibly dusty house and am wondering if regular dust would cause potential issues for a feathered friend or if it was just toxic airborne stuff. Figured you'd be the person to ask cause Google just keeps showing results for dust that birds might *create*. Don't worry, I would never adopt one if I wasn't sure it was a safe environment.

      @Talk2WandaVision 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@weaselmaster98 well you’re always going to have “some” dust (that’s just part of life right?) but excessive amounts of dust is definitely problematic for birdies. I have to be vigilant myself as my place is wedged between a garden and the garage and it’s a dust magnet. I highly recommend a good air purifier and regular changing of the filters. I have an Alen air purifier at home and it helps a lot. It’s totally worth it to take these extra steps, birds are wonderful additions to your life (especially rescues) Go for it! 😁

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Parrotlets are wonderful little birds, feisty and boisterous! As mentioned previously, you'll most likely just need a good air purifier. This will help keep you and your bird healthy. The most important part is to buy plenty of replacement filters so you're prepared and don't put off the necessary filter changes. A good air purifier for birds will run about $100-200 and filters can be expensive too. So be sure to factor that into your cost assessment to know if a parrotlet is a good choice for you and what you can provide.

    I'm curios. I have a horrible question for you guys. My new puppy Shiba, who's doings so well and so well behaved and taken care of and so cute she is loved whatever I take her, looks a little like my cousins dog Django. It reminds me of the horribly sad story of how they got him. Obviously there's a good ending cause Django is a super happy and healthy dog now. So my step uncle was driving down the highway at highway speeds, and he saw someone in a beat up pick up throw a tied up sack kinda like a big pillow case out there window. He slowed down to avoid hitting it and noticed it was moving weird. He stopped, walked up to it, and the whining gave it away. He found two tiny little puppies in there. He adopted one, and his brother adopted the other pup. Thank goddess no serious injuries like broken bones or something. My question is, is this a common thing you guys see? I mean there have to be a million better options to get rid of unwanted puppies other than throwing them out of a speeding truck on the highway. The fact that they tied it shut makes me think they expected them or wanted them to die. That breaks my heart that people do that kind of thing. Do you see a lot of rescues from situations like that?

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm so happy to hear that Shiba and Django are in loving families. Sadly, this kind of cruelty does happen more often than we'd like to think it does. That's why it's so important for animal rescues and shelters to have good solid funding from their communities so they can be there to help when people need a place to bring their unwanted pets. Some people think they'll be charged a fee to bring in unwanted pets, which is one reason they might choose to dump them like in your story. It's not okay and I think the best way to try and help fix the problem is to continue to educate, share resources, support rescues, and act with compassion for others.

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sometimes the squawking is just a sun rising and setting thing, sometimes she does it when we haven't delivered her breakfast quickly enough, sometimes she does it when lots of commotion is going on and it's like she's joining in on the hubbub. In this case, I'm pretty sure she was prompted to join in with her calls because we had all coming together and started making noise together after her space was so quiet from everyone being gone for half the day.

    I wonder if Huckleberry rejected Piya because he was jealous that she could take Jessi's attention away from him. Or is that anthropomorphizing too much?

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'd say that's too far down the path of using human emotions to explain an animal's behavior, so yes, anthropomorphizing. But we can assess his behavior more in depth to try and guess why he reacted the way he did. Some animals will become possessive of territory, food, toys, best perches, mates and even favorite human keepers. We can break down his observable behavior and see if it holds up to being possessive of me (Jessi) as he would be of a fav human/mate. So, Huckleberry doesn't become possessive of me when I bring another human close. He also has a great relationship with Taylor, his other main human caretaker. If he viewed either of us as a mate, he'd likely be possessive of us against other humans. He does become possessive of food, though. It is possible that he would view another beaver differently than humans, however, Piya was so young when we tried to introduce them that it's unlikely she was viewed as potential competition against him for a mate situation. Beavers don't form friendships with other beavers outside their family, they form monogamous bonds with their mate. So the idea that Piya would be competition for attention doesn't ring true for the species' natural behavior. My best guess would be that Huckleberry was nervous around Piya because she was unfamiliar, which put him on edge. So, we tried rewarding him with treats for coming closer to her. Then, once he was coming closer to her, we tried distracting him with freely accessible yummy branches to see if he would practice calmly eating while in her presence. Then I observed a moment of behavior that showed he had became possessive of the food source (branches) and reacted negatively toward her. I'm thinking this one food possessive reaction then led to a negative reaction each time he saw her. Beavers are interesting animals because it seems like once they've tried something or reacted to something in a certain way once, it seems like that's how they'll react from here on out. Using anthropomorphism, we'd simply call that "stubborn" in a human. For beavers, I'd like to say that that reactive behavior suits them well for survival in the wild. For example, if they are scared by an animal once, they'll react negatively every time they encounter that animal in the future and then teach their family to also be wary of that kind of animal. Huckleberry is just doing the best he can for a disabled beaver living under human care, and we're just doing the best we can to try and give him a good life. Thanks for asking and thinking about his behavior! Animals are super fascinating and thinking more about their reactions and the how and why of their behaviors and communication is something I love to do.

      @@animalwondersmontana Thanks, Jessi! I admire your dedication to animals, and I appreciate the knowledge you've accumulated through experience. In fact, I have applied some of it in social work with the most complicated animal, humans. It can be difficult to understand the behavior of a young person who has become trapped in an unhealthy situation, and sometimes it's helpful to think in terms of natural instincts that have been activated -- kind of the flip side of anthropomorphizing. For example, people can learn to react with fear to a particular stimuli from a negative association, and sometimes a young person will express that fear in self-destructive ways when they feel they have no other recourse or other means to control their environment. Your creativity in finding solutions for the animals in your care inspires me!

    1:08 I’m sorry but I didn’t really understand what the criteria for taking in an animal has to to with being chosen to be an ambassado for their species. I thought you would talk more about temperament, sleeping habits, possible allergies to the people and/or animals, whether having quills, talons, fangs, claws, poison/venom can affect the likelihood of being brought out to presentations.

      @@animalwondersmontana Thanks for responding but I was more curious about how it’s decided that some animals are chosen to do presentations and others aren’t. I know not all the animals at Animal Wonders end up making the presentations rounds and you can’t take all of them either. How do you decide which of the guinea pig herd to show or do they all come along for the ride? Are there any individual animals that turn out not to do well for as traveling ambassadors but they’re better at doing video presentations or they’re are a great companion to one that is?

      @@MissLilyputt Oh, gottcha. Well, every animal and every situation is different, so it's not an easy questions to answer unless I go very general. We assess the animal's behavior and use positive reinforcement to work toward that animal accepting, enjoying, and choosing to attend presentations with us.
      For animals like the guinea pigs, we try to rotate through the ones that tolerate interactions with us. Some just do not like being picked up, but they'll happily eat treats from anyone who offers. For them we'll put a crate down and let them run in on their own, then come out on their own at the presentation where volunteers will offer them treats. Others prefer to be held on arms close to a body, so that's how we hold them at presentations.
      For other animals, like our turacos for example, we're still in training with them for public presentations but both are good with virtual programs. Sunny the red crested turaco is a pro at virtual and is very close to attending her first local in-person presentation. Sprite will probably never be fully on board with in-person presentations, but we're still working with her to be more tolerant of interactions with her human keepers so we can better care for her needs, like health exams and training for enrichment.
      Out of all of the animals we have, only 6 animals don't currently do in-person programs and 3 are getting closer to the goal of their first show every day. For those that are completely comfortable traveling in a crate and hanging out at other locations for public presentations, we choose to only take 5-7 animals for each outing. Choosing who goes is based on: the lesson we're focused on and who would best represent the topics, if it's a repeat visit to a group then who hasn't seen that audience at a previous visit, who isn't already schedule for a presentation that week, who would do well in the specific location we're traveling to, who would do well with the type of audience we'll be teaching, and which human will be the educator for that program.
      I hope that answers your question better :)
