Seven Useful 3D Printed Equipment & Gear Items For Backcountry Camping & Backpacking!

  • It's equal parts fun and utility to 3d print my own backpacking & backcountry camping supplies, equipment, and other things at home. Whatever items or gear I might need that's feasibly done with 3d printing, I can hack out a prototype/replacement/upgrade in a matter of hours. And they're not just gimmicks, either--they're actually useful, practical, and worthwhile. I use everything on this list myself.
In this video, I go over seven of my favorite functional prints for use on trips:
    - Gas canister stove stand

    - Carabiners

    - Whistles

    - Line tensioners

    - Tent stakes

    - Water filter adapters

    - Hobo fishing rod

When I was a kid I'd just take a reel fishing, with no rod. You can get a bit of distance to your cast by putting a bit of weight on the line, and spinning it clockwise like a vertical lasso if that makes sense, and releasing on the upswing. Caution: Practice without the hook at first to reduce accidentally hooking yourself

Great video. One of the bottom lines is 3d printing isn't some magic that solves all problems but a useful vector to attack issues and open up possibilities otherwise too difficult or expensive to chase. I love the adapters and line locks. looking at the hobo fishing rod specifically. I would be interested if you thought on modifying the reel end that you could either attach it to a found stick or branch and 3d printed eye so you have the option to go naked or give yourself a pseudo-rod. My setup usually also has a bobber and hook so if I forage grubs or worms while setting up a camp I can chuck a line and do other things. this usually involves tying off to a stick so I have a large visual indicator while I have a line in the water.

This was a great list. I have never heard of the water filter trick. I think I'll add that and the tensioner to my gear.

Printed tensioners in different sizes for different cords, and it's trash. You know what else is trash? Using something absorbent known for stretching and sagging like paracord as a ridgeline. Try zingit, or amsteel, and you'll never look back.
