I always thought it was purely a Metal Sonic viewpoint, but I DO like the interpretation presented here! One thing you missed for Metal though: "They all become numbers as they fall". @@Spiralr Maybe he could have some kind of switching personality, since he is a robot it could be unstable if he acts like how he does in heroes when overpowering Eggman, or become like in Mania adventures when Eggman has his control. Actually, in Sonic and the Black Knight, the final boss song was “With Me” which is from the point of view of the villain, complete with female vocals since the villain of that game is female. So it’s similar to Sonic Heroes in the fact the final boss has a different vocal song to the main theme of the game and it’s portrays the villain.
With Me actually works as both. Please look for my comment on With Me (Massive Power Mix). (I know I’m self promoting, but I can’t write that long comment again.)
Sonic: "I've got to stop Metal!" Hyper Metal Sonic: "I know you're going to do." Metal and Sonic: "Strange isn't it!!!???!!!" Edit: btw I'm a new subscriber
Personally, I view at purely metals theme, but you're probably right. I also partially subscribe to the theory that metal sonic is a roboticized version of metal sonic, so the line "one by one they all become a number as they fall" I interpreted as he had to watch all his friends die, as dark as that is. And "I can fight the feeling to resist over time but when it becomes to much to take you sneak up from behind" means he had to commit heinous acts, even to his friends, but he has no free will to go against it. So he deals with it. Gives in. But hes still sonic, and his personality would not tolerate that. I doubt that's true, but it's an interesting perspective.
I also feel like live and learn seeing as it is coming from Shadow's and Sonic's perspective. I don't know why but for some reason a lot of the shadow songs are deep when people start to analyze and actually alot of Sonic songs for that matter.

I combined the 3 best quotes of Metal Sonic from the Sonic OVA and Sonic Heroes which goes like this: “There can only be one Sonic and I am the real Sonic. Not even the “Ultimate Life form” can stop me.” Great video, love that song, and Metal Sonic’s my favorite character so I really appreciate the effort that went into making this video. Can’t wait to see what else you have in store.
But... I'm pretty sure it is? Maybe it's just an unlockable, but I recall both Brawl and Sm4sh having it as an option. Haven't seen if Ultimate does the same (waiting for the 3.0 update so I can record a first playthrough Spiritless run), but I'd be surprised if it's missing from the final list.
I agree with almost everything you said. My conclusion would be that What I'm Made Of is the greatest musical tribute to Metal in the entire saga, it makes things go from a ''white vs black'' perspective to something more similar to a ''scale of grey'", because, as you said, Metal in some way thinks he is doing the right choices.... What I'm Made Of is probably one of those rare cases in where, according to your perspective at least, the theme was composed to represent not just one event or a character in particular, but INSTEAD DOUBLE EVENTS, DOUBLE CHARACTERS. For Sonic and company, is another opportunity to save the world, but also to stop Metal from becoming a threat even worse than Overlord and also why not, to reference their classical rivalry. In the case of Metal, I would say that this represents not only his rebellion, but also how his objectives have changed, now, he isn't fighting to become ''the real Sonic'", but instead to prove that he is a being better than Sonic himself. I would also say that in some way this have a undirectly ''sad'' tone, because with only the title it seems like Metal is shouting ''I can reason, I CAN THINK OUTSIDE THE PROTOCOL, OUTSIDE THE PROGRAMATION''. With that in mind, I say that this is sad, because Metal gets reprogrammed since his defeat in Heroes and apparently he loses all the experiences he passed since his liberation feelings started to rose. Good video.
What I'm Made of and With Me are two songs that both broke the trend of being from the point of view of the protagonist(s), as both occur in games whose final boss is not the expected one. Just a trend I found interesting.
For Shadow the Hedgehog, the theme "Who I Am" was supposed to be the final boss theme but they switched it for "I am all of me" in the released version.
I never ever considered this but I do see your reasoning. Its does indeed make sense. I think I'm gonna watch that fight scene now, between the Metal Sonic and the Axem Rangers from that new grounds series Super Mario Bros. Z!:)
i'm really glad I found this video because I've always considered this but only subconsciously. I always thought it was more for metal sonic but at the same time Sonic could say the exact same thing back but hey, a metal theme song for a Metal Sonic.
I thought "One by one they've all become a black mark on the floor" referred to scorch marks or ash- Sonic blows up Metal's machines, which are the faces that he recognises-they mostly hold the same round core that reminds of Eggman's ovular design-and they fall in numbers. Metal Sonic meanwhile, has a giant flamethrower and billions of artillery machines at his disposal, recognises literally everyone ever, and intends to make them fall to their knees in numbers or to turn them to ash.
I’m pretty late to the party, but Sonic and the black knight’s final boss song is “With Me.” The song follows the “What I’m Made Of” method of expressing the thoughts and feelings of both the protagonist (Sonic) and the antagonist (Merlina). I’d love to see your analysis of the song, as it’s one of my favorite songs from the Sonic franchise.
I remember seeing a comment on a YT video of a rip of "What I'm Made Of." Basically what the commenter was saying was that usually games have menacing music as a final boss theme because the final boss is menacing, but "What I'm Made Of" is the opposite. The song makes it seem like Metal Overlord's afraid of Sonic. Sonic is the final boss to Metal Overlord like Metal Overlord is the final boss to us. I would give the OP's username here as credit, but I don't remember his USR. Edit: I have found the original poster's user, so credit to Megachamp.
This and Live and Learn are my fave boss songs they're just so good but I always seen Live and Learn as being a theme of both Sonic and Shadow i'm not sure why that is though
what makes it even more interesting is that there is a theory that metal sonic is actually sonic from an alternate universe were eggman won on defeating sonic then sonic became evil.
I feel like all the crush 40 songs have a meaning or message like if I heard the song with out playing the games I could form a story or message from the lyrics
When i listened this song before i always thought that it was Metal Sonic perspective, this is the first time that i hear that it can be from both perspectives. I thought that mostly because of its theme, "what I'm made of", is in first person singular, and the point of the game is teamwork (in plural) which made me think that the only one working alone is Metal Sonic.
14:40 With Me from Black Knight was also like this too. We didn’t know if it was Merlina or Sonic singing although we assume it was Merlina because a girl was singing but then again, it might be why Crush 40 did a cover of the song so it could be seen as Sonic’s version of the song.
It makes sense that it can be seen from both perspectives, the Devs probably knew that too, In Sonic and the Black Knight, a secret item allows you to replace the stage music with the specific character’s theme song, for Knuckles you have the “unlike sonic I don’t chuckle”, for Shadow you have “All hail shadow” For sonic you have “what I’m made of.”
I kind of feel like the song is from every characters perspective. Seeing as this is a game about teamwork. For tails and knuckles same reason as sonic for the lyrics.
To be honest I don't see the Sonic side of the music, "What I'm made of" was always a Metal Sonic song to me. I've always thought Metal Sonic was out of control, and was evolving like crazy. The song seems like a way of Metal Sonic saying he was alive and had became stronger than anyone could have imagine. That's why the boss theme felt like the player was fighting an underdog Sonic that had his back against the wall, that was fighting against many people he already knew. This person straight up doesn't care about the life's of the people he's fighting, they're just a number he has already memorize, when they finally cornered this person he reveals a secret ability. Unless Sonic is a mathematician, that can be opened up and have energy taken away from him, that song seemed like it belongs to Metal Sonic. For a game that was about team work it would be weird if "Sonic's" theme song is mainly about Sonic doing all the fighting, without a single line talking about his friends or teamwork helping him.
So off topic has anyone ever noticed Sonic Adventure, SA2, and Sonic heroes final bosses seem to represent the three legendary beasts from biblical legends being the Leviathan-(chaos) Behemoth-(Bio-lizard) and (Ziz)-Metal Sonic
I love What I'm Made Of so much! If we include it in a video game project, I think the dual meaning is perfect for both Salem, the goddess of darkness, and Joshua Branwen (Sonic). The lyrics in particular are in the chorus: "Try to reach inside of me, Try to drain my energy. Let me show you just what I'm made of." Allow me to explain: The basic gist of the final boss is to take down weak points on her true form before her final transformation. Because of the eternal conflict between light and dark, the positive energy starts weakening her a little bit in certain areas. The first targets are shoulder cannons (you are playing as a completely new team that we are still working on) and if you can cause them to overload, it will destroy them and give two of the emeralds back. The second target is to side coils for exactly the same problem: too much conflicting tension causing a heat buildup. You play as Team Dark and you have to target those coils. Two more Emeralds are given to you once they are destroyed. Finally, before her final transformation, you have to take out 3 power cores on her back as Team Sonic. Once you have taken out those dorsal power cores, you enter a sequence in which you unleash and ultra semblance boost, which is accompanied by the final chorus of Fist Bump. However, the final form is complete after this, and Sonic has to use the remainder of the emeralds power in order to take her down... alone. This is accompanied by Hyper-Shan's This is War mashup. That's my explanation. What's yours?
Holy shit this makes way more sense after the release of the new comics where Super Neo Metal Sonic quotes lyrics of "What Im made of" HOLY FU CK! IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN METAL SONIC'S THEME
6:03 my interpretation of that part for sonic specifically was hes been through this shit before, metal aint his first villian. Hes rackin up a helluva win count by the time Heroes comes around
At first I thought it was Sonic's song, then I thought it was Metal's song, then I thought maybe the first verse is Sonic to Metal and the second verse is Metal to Sonic and NOW I know the truth. Thanks lord Danny. Lol
ah yes one of my most favourite Sonic game ever. Man i love it so much. Edit: just wanting to add, it also makes me feel like i'm fighting for justice. Against all odds i'll still fight for what is right. Sonic Heroes has one of the best soundtracks overall.
I think this is spot on I've always viewed this song sort of as a back and forth between metal and sonic And as far as wanting a song like this again We sort of do, with me from sonic and the black knight is very much a back and forth with sonic and....whatever her name was lol
In the lyrics "and one by one they all become a black mark on the floor" I like tho think about the lines they draw around bodies in crime scenes implying that someone is dead or another brick in the wall
To me the "what I'm made of" part is sonic and maybe his friends saying they're strong, like if someone got into fight and said "I'll show you what I'm made of" or maybe this video just made me try and decode a song for no reason, oh well, I guess we'll have to call up matpat/game theory
when taking this song and decoding it I personally feel as the song is something resented in most of sonic storys. A story about fearless freedom fighters that are always willing to take up the fight when things hit the fan. sonic brash but will to fight to his last day enjoying adventures. shadow a cure gone wrong and made into a weapon. tails a misfit that works to achieve his goals to be more like sonic. knuckles a guardian of the master who want to simple live in peace.Amy rose a girl wanting to prove herself to the one she admires. and the lots more. just look into character arks of characters like Chaos,Emerald ,e103 Gamma to see my point.
Hmm very interesting analysis of what I'm made of danny I originally thought it was just for sonic but since you told me about metal's perspective i find it very intriguing and by the way could you do a analysis on with me by all ends from sonic and the black please if you do the song actually dose sonic's and the final boss's perspectives 😊
You could literally combine the song with Challengers from DBZ Budokai 2 (It's a remix but it's pretty good) I loved this song when I first encountered Metal Sonic as the FINAL-Final Battle of the game in Sonic Heroes and still love it to this day.
That intro music sounds incredibly familiar but i can't remember what it's called... Edit: Aha! I knew it was a waterflame song! It's "Electroman Adventures V2" by Waterflame if anyone wanted to know Also I always thought the song was solely from Metal Sonic's perspective Also also I think you're misinterpreting some of the lyrics by assuming they're always literal As for the first half of the second verse It's probably about Metal Sonic defeating sonic's friends
Metal Sonic has really lost his spark in recent games. He needs the personality he had in games such as Heroes. Hell, even in Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix he had some personality. His other iterations also deserve some love.
I always thought it was purely a Metal Sonic viewpoint, but I DO like the interpretation presented here!
One thing you missed for Metal though: "They all become numbers as they fall". Numbers CAN refer to statistics, true, but they also refer to data. So he's saying they're reduced to nothing more than lines of code as he destroys them.

You do know this version of metal sonic returned in an IDW comic, right?
Edit: Metal overlord version
Holy shit this makes way more sense after the release of the new comics where Super Neo Metal Sonic quotes lyrics of "What Im made of" HOLY FU CK! IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN METAL SONIC'S THEME
6:03 my interpretation of that part for sonic specifically was hes been through this shit before, metal aint his first villian. Hes rackin up a helluva win count by the time Heroes comes around
What I’m made of NO
Show you what my self that I’m created YES
Not only is what I'm made of genius, it's also a jam
metal sonic should come back with his own story about whether he's just a robot with no consciousness or a real creature with feelings .
What I’m Made Of is my favourite Sonic song.
What I'm made of is the greatest sonic song in the inventory
Dam this is deep
I think this is spot on
I've always viewed this song sort of as a back and forth between metal and sonic
And as far as wanting a song like this again
We sort of do, with me from sonic and the black knight is very much a back and forth with sonic and....whatever her name was lol
The song fits Neo Metal Sonic's perspective way more .
THIS song is WHY it's my favorite song of ALL TIME. :)
In the lyrics "and one by one they all become a black mark on the floor" I like tho think about the lines they draw around bodies in crime scenes implying that someone is dead or another brick in the wall
you can use that music to a final boss or metro sonic theme song
This was cool. Jave you analyzed Open Your Heart or Live and Learn?
Not yet, but I do plan to analyse more songs.
I be flossiiiiiiiiiiiin
I be flosiiiiiiiiiiiiiin
I be flossiiiiiiiiiiiin
I be flossiiiiiiiiiiiin
Something tells me you like Metal Sonic just a little.
I always thought it was sung through Metal's voice
I am all of me its a awesome and strong song
Best Sonic soundtrack purely for the music alone. If you wanna fight me, I have all 7 Chaos Emeralds. Shut up.
Yeah
I can believe that
It is Metal Sonic's theme and no one can say otherwise. METAL SONIC FU CKING ROCKS MAN
To me the "what I'm made of" part is sonic and maybe his friends saying they're strong, like if someone got into fight and said "I'll show you what I'm made of" or maybe this video just made me try and decode a song for no reason, oh well, I guess we'll have to call up matpat/game theory
when taking this song and decoding it I personally feel as the song is something resented in most of sonic storys.
I'm validated
Hmm very interesting analysis of what I'm made of danny I originally thought it was just for sonic but since you told me about metal's perspective i find it very intriguing and by the way could you do a analysis on with me by all ends from sonic and the black please if you do the song actually dose sonic's and the final boss's perspectives 😊
Like that song where Sonic and Metal share the lyrics, just better.
Why just now TH-cam tell me your channel existed?
You could literally combine the song with Challengers from DBZ Budokai 2 (It's a remix but it's pretty good)
I loved this song when I first encountered Metal Sonic as the FINAL-Final Battle of the game in Sonic Heroes and still love it to this day.
this song is the rab battle for sonic and mettle as in it for both of them
I thought what I have in my two hands for metal was he was talking about chocola and froggy
That intro music sounds incredibly familiar but i can't remember what it's called...
Edit:
Aha! I knew it was a waterflame song!
It's "Electroman Adventures V2" by Waterflame if anyone wanted to know
Also
I always thought the song was solely from Metal Sonic's perspective
Also also
I think you're misinterpreting some of the lyrics by assuming they're always literal
As for the first half of the second verse
It's probably about Metal Sonic defeating sonic's friends
I have a hard time picking a favorite crush 40 song between open your hart never turn back and live and learn
i actually always thought of this as metal's theme
I found you 👀
its my fav crush 40 song
"with me" does the same thing
english teachers be like :
i love this kind of teacher tho
Who else would like to have the next Sonic game to have Metal Sonic as the main villain? I would.
live and learn is for both sonic and shadow in sa2 they lived and they learned.
Metal Sonic has really lost his spark in recent games. He needs the personality he had in games such as Heroes. Hell, even in Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix he had some personality. His other iterations also deserve some love.
I always thought that it was from metals perspective when I heard it when I played against the boss for the first time.
*Also it’s just a banger*
