    An extra note for hawkeye, generally speaking the reason they calculate is because if you actually watch a tennis ball contact the ground during professional tennis, it's actually generally not what you would consider a bounce but actually drags across the court to some extent, so camera's can never really determine that.

    6:20 fun fact: the glue for a substantial amount of baseballs is made, by hand in giant kitchen aid style mixers, at the factory I work at. We do all of our computing on very old computers that were moved to vms that I am now in charge of updating.

    Damn, Linus is REALLY fanboying over the idea of having this system in his center, haha. Good to have that kind of excitement toward things, especially has you grow older and more cynical.

    Hawkeye is used in GAA games in Ireland to decide whether the ball is between the goalposts.
    They have separate settings for Hurling and Football.

  • @ShaniAce
    @ShaniAce 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hawkeye's been in use for soccer for many years, to determine whether the ball has fully crossed the goal line or not. The ref will get a signal to their wrist watch if it's a goal, and they always show an animation of the ball position on TV.

  • @John_1920
    @John_1920 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    14:30 Speaking of upgrades, to make it easier for the referee to tell whether the badminton was inside the court or outside, install a flooring that lights up a dot exactly where the badminton landed first, that way there will be no need for slow-motion cameras or anything of the sort :D

    germany still struggles to move past fax, matter of fact they are huge on manual filled printouts and postal deliveries - we are slowly transitioning towards email while the rest of the world is fully digital and deals with everything over apps on their phone 😅

  • @darkflux
    @darkflux 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    i am STILL shocked that most US offices REQUIRE you to fax them personal info, as opposed to email, "...because fax is more secure" somehow.
    but fax does NOT allow you to send if somebody else is sending, it takes longer, especially for multiple pages, plus, if the file you are sending is ON the computer, you have to PRINT it to send it, wasting paper, and if you are faxing a photo ID, you have to copy it first to send it, where with email you can just snap a pic on your phone and email it.

    • @DigitalMoonlight
      @DigitalMoonlight 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can fax direct from your computer a few different ways, VOIP providers probably being the least friction while a cheaper overall solution being a USB modem hooked into an existing phone line and using Windows's built in fax capabilities.

    • @darkflux
      @darkflux 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@DigitalMoonlight you completely missed the point of my comment...
      it's not that there aren't "many ways to fax", but that fax itself is a veritable hassle!
      case-in-point: WHO THE FECK HAS A PHONE LINE ANYMORE?!?
      MOST people have only their cell phone, and our local phone company no longer offers POTS service anymore.
      and whp in their right mind has a "modem", USB or otherwise, anyways?!
      and lastly: VoIP? really? yes, let's use an internet connection to send a slow-ass message over an antiquated technology that doesn't work half the time..........OR, we COULD just use EMAIL and have it sent over that SAME internet connection in HALF the time, the first time, every time...

    Q-SYS is amazing. I run a Q-SYS system at a convention center. I love it! It is so much easier to manage than most systems. The cores themselves aren't terribly priced, lookout for the pricing on their amps and other equipment.
    Let me know if you want to see some real world examples.

    As far as the question at the start, I work in the racing industry, and it actually surprises me how advanced things have gotten. Don't get me wrong, it certainly isn't ground breaking tech or anything. But given the culture of racing, and how stubborn we can all be in our hobby of racing, I'm just surprised so much tech has been adopted in general

    5:00 yeah, it's easier with the rules in something like soccer, where the ball has to be completely out to be out

    • @JoshuaHaupt-y8k
      @JoshuaHaupt-y8k 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Just want to quickly point out, in tennis the ball does have to be fully out to be considered out, Linus is incorrect in saying that only the contact patch has to be out. The entire ball needs to be out for the ball to be called out, otherwise, even if it is hanging over the line but not physically touching, it is considered in.

  • @MightyDantheman
    @MightyDantheman 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I'm not super familiar with these sports as I don't watch them, but why could they not track the ball? You could detect when the ball makes contact when its movement vector (per-frame) becomes a magnitude close to 0, and when the vector direction suddenly changes. You could find the center of the ball by calculating the X and Y pixels of the ball and then averaging to find the center point, then comparing that to the table/court positional data.

    • @_Juke_
      @_Juke_ 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      They do track balls in other sports with stuff inside the balls, not sure why not in Tennis tho.

    I once heard an amazing quote that sums up Japan and their mode of operation, the tech they use in business/professional/office environments, etc. amazingly.
    They're the country that lived in the year 2005 since 80s and stayed in that year until today.
    Way ahead of the rest of the world back then, and dragging behind now... at least when it comes to employing innovation into tech used for communication, business operations, web designs, etc.

    In the case of how mush of an object touch or not some thing... what if they use a lase or a sensor sheet, or like you say a bunch of floor level cameras array. doesn't have enough inversion for that? Is like footbal(soccer) upto not so long ago they not have a way to determing if something occur in the field and the side jufges where to... human to understand what happen, so they install the BAR, and now they can have a feedback about some moves or penalties.. I mean, technology is to advance to make that work easy, and they have the money, so.
