I dont pretend to understand the economics of it, but I have a strong feeling that products like that AI Pin don't come about from expecting mainstream success, but rather from trying to defraud investors.
Well that took a turn. But yeah, it's not like it has never happened before
How are rich people so stupid with money? I never understand how projects like hyperloop get so much money.
@@asdf30111 Pascal's mugging maybe? The odds of success are close to none but the possible rewards are big. And it's not like they invest their whole fortune on it, it's only one of many of their assets so they can afford to not make any profit on it.
Like AI mania, its mostly about separating rubes from their money.
@@azmah1999 The odds of sucess *are* none.
I'm going to make a catgirl gpt ai bot now

Alright how much VC funding do you need
personal catgirl vtuber assistant for everyone 🎉🎉🎉
Here's what nobody understands about the voice assistant as main control vector for your smart device thing. I don't wann have to TALK IN PUBLIC TO MYSELF every time I wanna do ANYTHING. Maybe the freaks who constantly take phone calls on the subway are the demographic for this, but I just don't wanna announce to everyone around me every action I take on my device.
HEY SIRI, tacos nearby.
No, siri. Hey, siri. No, tacos, TACOS... [ANGRY TYPING NOISES]

My wife is going to love it.

HEY EVERYONE IM EATING TOAST HASHTAG BREAKFAST HASHTAG MOSTIMPORTANTMEALOFTHEDAY

This seems like the -2nd generation of a product I'd actually use in the 8th gen
Yeah if it makes it there. We'll see. I get the idea of having an AI assistant wherever you go but phones are just better in every regard rn and once more apps are rolled out which include AI interfaces I think this product will die out. Also the price is EGREGIOUS.
Yeah, appart from the dull, awful launch video, I think this device launched too early for the concept, it completely relies on AI but the this type of AI is not ready yet for that kind of reliable usability where it actually does what you want it to do without issues, I'm sure when it launches there wil be videos of the Ai failing to do what the user wanted constantly. Seems like we're close to something like this actually working though, so I think that in 5 years something like this could actually work and be a little more like the Movie "Her" (just a little) but not just yet. But I agree with Dan this could just be a smartphone accessory, or a smartwatch and an earbud could do the same really.
@@walkinmn Lol it's not too early, you cannot improve on something that doesn't even exist and is not tested. Smartphones weren't great when they were new either, people still preferred the keyboard integrated devices. We're never gonna get to "her" until we make first steps. AI can be specifically trained by the way and such basic uses probably doesn't require much. This tech will only get better but only because it exists.
@@TheVirtualObserver AI assistants started in smartphones. You have to take out your phone and unlock it for the same functionality that this device can do much quicker and more intelligently, and will only improve with time.
@@mycelia_owyou don't have to do all that. Most phones come with an "assistant button" or at least a variable button where you can put the assistant. Also many many accessories have assistant integration, like smartwatches, headphones/earpods, you'll probably find a toaster that does the same as the AI pin
Ex Apple employes are just ex Yahoo employes bought on wish but expensive.
I audibly laughed.
It's not really true, but feels true doesn't it?
@@LiveTypeyahoo devs are legends. So, it’s highly likely
The pin sounds like a step down in every regard to a smart watch, much less a phone. But im sure they'll sell a lot because its different
Wrist mounted is the way to go if we don't hurry up and make clear PCBs soon. You can mount a small PDA/large phone there with a curved screen and it'd be a perfect GPS, phone, watch, PDA, etc.
Yeah also it had the price of a good smartphone but it's easy more limited....
I think "different" is the key. It is designed for a new use case. Basically it is a Star Trek communicator badge that they used in the show to interact with the ship computer. The idea is that you ask it a question or give a command and it can give you information or do something for you. For instance you are in a supermarket and ask it "which product is more environmentally friendly" while holding two cans of beans or something. Because the pin has a camera and is contextually aware of the environment it can figure out what you are talking about. I still remain skeptical that this will take off though.
it definitely wont sell that much lol
@@Rexhunterj i hate the feeling of thinghs on my writs. phones make more sense. (at-least until smart glasses/contacts)
Dan with the pocket protector line is play of the game 😂
OpenAI: 128k context window, 3x cheaper, we cover legal costs if you get sued for copyright, data updated to April 2023
Linus: haha turbo
128k tokens is wild. You could fit some popular books on that, like the entire book.
Im working on something that breaks magazines into articles. Needed to do cludgy pagination stuff before and it didnt really work. All that goes out the window with that length!
The creators of that Humane AI pin are crazy for thinking it will replace smartphones and charging that much, but I won't write it off as useless. Seniors and people with neuromuscular disorders might find it easier to use than a regular phone.
it only a matter of time before someone create a similar product, but only cost $50, and do all the same thing,
but as a smartphone accessories instead of overpriced standalone tech
@@jensenraylight8011
- Every new tech is expensive
- Every new tech is nowhere near as good until it can mature
- Competition will only further drive its progress and further prove its place in replacing older smart tech.
- In 10 years it might just be good enough to actually start replacing smartphones, and will be cheaper.
It will replace it, just not right now, as they've said.
@@mycelia_ow nope, this one is too limited to be useful,
Some people fall in love with their own solutions, not knowing that it doesn't solve any problem at all, or something like smartphone accessories can solve the problem cheaper
This is a common thing in startup, they're too focused on their solutions, only to realize that nobody want that.
Sure, show your bullet point to thousands of founders who created a novelty product that end up in graveyard.
It's admittedly a super cool tech demo. I don't really think it's practical though.
7:00 No linus your not losing your passion! its just that there is a difference between google glasses and this stuff. The glasses were inovative and sci-fi and obviously any tech nerd is going to get interested in it. On the other hand this new staf is just gimmicky and you can sense that they are just trying out new things to make a quick buck
Yeah the pin is a marketing person's idea, too many people work in HR/Marketing and the like now and run companies into the dirt for money.
When the Google Glasses were announced, I remember the first things that came to my mind were Dragon Ball and Star Trek 😂
Now, let's do the same with the Ai Pin.
The only things it reminds me of are campaigns and conventions (both of them are boring and non-futuristic) 😒
That is why I don't blame Linus 😅
the glasses is basically hologram in the form of AR, that's a real sci-fi cool shit but the Ai Pin is just lame and were riding AI hype train
you're*
I used to be super excited about wearables and alternate mobile computer interfaces. But the humane AI pin is just the SixthSense project (from over a decade ago) made smaller and with GPT, with no use cases that are unique from those in devices that already exist - everything the AI pin can do except for the camera (which doesn't seem very good) can be recreated with any modern smartwatch done far better. If you're looking to avoid distractions, a smartwatch is just a better choice and can do all the same things. And those devices have more battery life and are more ergonomic to use while not requiring voice-input (though still having that option), while also being more accurate because their assistants don't rely on GPT.
This is a solution in search of a problem that isn't even the best solution to that nonexistent problem.
"Is any amount of you open to being wrong?" What a beautiful, sincere, inviting, and kind way to challenge someone's opinion.
I wrote that down to use! Great question.
The pin device would have been cool as an accessory that connects to your phone, it would definitely have lowered the entry bar and would have allowed a free / premium tier split to get users in the door.
Thanks Dan for bringing this up!
$2500 for one speaker. You can buy a pair of Genelec studio monitors for that price...
That foldable laptop with a huge display in a 13" form factor, I want one in a 16" form factor.
what laptop is that?
It's just a Star Trek Communication Badge. It was only a matter of time that someone made one since there are claims that the ideas for most modern tech has come from the Star Trek universe.
You say Star Trek. I say the interface for the "Her" movie.
Science Fiction man, we are getting there, slowly, but we do.
I absolutely love that new laptop form factor. May be the next one I get.
20:47 this just made me realize that the device is Issac from The Division. AI powered shoulder computer that can detect enemies around you and project images onto the area around you to highlight items, like a virus sitting on a surface.
8:28 did luke just rip two
He absolutely did. I can't believe nobody else heard that
The AI camera being able to see the world around you actually seems like a decent idea. If it could just interface with your phone and watch, instead of needing a memey projector, that would probably be far more interesting.
oh dan already talked about that
I see a *lot* of privacy concerns with having an always-online device constantly recording what you are doing and looking at. I can't help but feel that it's going to be abused seeing as Humane AI is founded by people who have a less than ideal reputation when it comes to anti-consumer practices
Got to love that Syng Cell Alpha speaker, was 2500$ during the WAN show, now it's 35% off at 2500$ for black friday.
hearing "Laser projector that can project onto your hand" brought me cicret bracelet flashbacks
I remember this projector (different look). It was a piece of vaporware that they made sizzle video for. It was just a pico pocket projector 2010-2012 ish hang on a necklace pointing at the ground with a mirror angling it in front of you. And in the video they held their wrist out and spun their finger in a circle and showed a clock pop up as well as a bunch of other features. Can anyone find that vaporwear?
I think I remember seeing something like this on a channel that debunked deceptive Kickstarter projects. I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but I think it was on Thunderf00t's TH-cam channel? Not entirely sure though
It's not what you're thinking of but the the Cicret bracelet was the same idea but wrist-mounted, complete vaporware
Products like AI Pin feel to me as if someone set in a room and said "wouldn't it be cool" and no one actually stopped to think what problems does it actually solve, and what challenges it brings.
There is nothing the pin does that a regular smartphone can't and to a much better degree. If we talk specifically about convenient small tasks, you can just use a smartwatch. Seriously, this whole gadget can be substituted for a pair of regular wireless earphones and an app on your regular smartphone.
Reminds me of the pins from star trek, that transforming laptop looks neat btw
the compute puk thing kind of got rolled into desktop mode on some smart phones, i use samsung dex on a daily basis, i get home and plug my phone into a dock and use that for all my basic internet needs and light gaming (via xbox cloud). i have a gaming PC that i use when what i'm doing needs a little more horsepower but for daily surfing, comms, etc that is sufficient
i bet this is just ahead of its time. it’s a step in the “disconnect to connect” direction
The AI pin won’t be bad when it’s under $100, has many more features, and an even better camera. A high quality go pro with AI assistance, etc. for a cheap price might be something that sells well in the future
4:30 You're neglecting the biggest selling point. Blind people... They wont use the laser projector, but having an AI assistant and unlimited usage, for less than a smartphone, that's a pretty stellar deal...
I think the thing Linus was thinking about from years ago was the Sixth Sense TED talk. It was basically what Humane is creating, but 10 years ago.
Sixth sense? Don't these people realise we have way more than 5 senses?
9:40 As the owner of a Beats branded HP laptop from 2012 with hopelessly wimpy speakers that force me to use headphones during work meetings and which I am typing on right now, I would have expected it to mean absolutely nothing.
Color me surprised.
So when's this HP spectre fold video coming out?
Turbo has been around in OpenAI terms? Originally gpt-3.5-turbo. Now they are doing gpt-4-turbo
Its the general hype of the "Turbo" prefix. Like, we have Turbopack now in web development. Suddenly its coming en vogue again.
The context length is getting longer so they can accept entire user manuals as an input. You can then basically talk to a user manual.
finally, I can use tar without spending 20 minutes googling!
That Balanced VR setup sounds like a sick video 😮
AI pin seems like Vapor-Ware that will soon be covered by ThunderFoot.
3:47 Oh it's kind of like the comm badge from Star Trek! Kind of. Maybe they should make ones that look like them.
This is infinitely less whimsical than google glass anyhow
I think checking the time would be faster than taking your phone out. It is literally like looking at your wrist watch. For me in construction where I am always physically busy with my phone in a holster on my hip, it would be a lot easier to do whatever on my hand than have to get my phone out and put down whatever I was doing to use my phone. The first stumbling block for me though is the camera. I need a good camera like on my phone to be able to take pictures of defects on the job etc although i really wish I could do it one handed because holding my phone up to look at something on a ceiling and pressing the button requires 2 hands or one of those stupid nob things connected to the back so i dont drop the phone on my face while taking the picture.
the full gpt4 model goes up to 32k context window, the 128k is nice but I don't think it's worth the downgrade in answer quality for most of my questions.
that laptop seems very cool but the foldable screens are scary and expensive
Do they use docking stations over usb C for laptop to desk top displays I think there great as it’s plug and go
Do you gate your audio. It doesn't sound good when the audio disaper for a moment
That would be a wickid series: LINUS AI, could use ltt forum and the ltt labs to make an wholesome gaming/tech related/ meme/ and some segway to our sponsor (DBrand?) AI... Oh not forget the quickbit!....
8:24 luke rips ass. His face says it all
8:30, whew! I thought you were going to talk about your Billet Labs review fiasco for a second. 😮 That’s definitely a place you were wrong. Then you pulled out the hp to clarify you weren’t talking about it again. 😂
Quality of information processing degrades tho for larger context length. So it won't pick up as much as you would expect.
Dan just made this episode with that AI Pocket Protector joke
My biggest issue with the Humane AI pin is how to deliver audio only to me without using headphones/ ear buds. If they could figure that out it would actually probably be useful for me. Until then it is just a gimmick. I am still interested in it and if they go half price will probably pick one up.
That is a solved problem. The biggest issue is that it's a smartphone but with less capabilities.
Hilarious that a key feature is helping you with legal fees for getting sued for using it.
Apparently there are open source AI models with infinite tokens right now
11:02 What is that laptop?
Pranav mistry built AI pin (Sixth sense) and presented on TED.
A lot of form factors appeared before the black mirror that an iPhone is.
Eventually someone will figure out the most effective form factor. And it'll eat the entire market.
going turbo! like wreck it ralph
they literally made the Apple Brooch from Bad Mouth but irl and unironically lmao
If you want some context aware AI camera stuff just buy the dang RayBans and wait until they turn that feature on. This pin is basically just some people that got too high while watching Star Trek:TNG and wanted to make a comm badge
"a camera, speaker and chatgpt - it's already in my phone" some people just love new hardware though. NES classic comes to mind. Many buyers already had two raspberry pis with emulators collecting dust and a console but just wanted that new separate device.
Its almost as if ChatGPT has been made for the following: Scientific Paper + ChatGPT = Scientific Analysis.
Linus is trying to tell us that he likes LG Wing
24:45 Am I the only one who totally does not understand what happed here? Lol
my biggest take away here. I want the term "Turbo" back again lol
I can't believe you guys haven't seen those folding screen laptops yet. HP isn't even the first to do it. Lenovo made one a couple years ago and the second version of theirs just came out. It's the Lenovo X1. They're neat but theyre way too expensive. I feel... weird. I knew about something before LTT.
Luke and Dan also don't seem to know about the RayBan sunglasses that have a camera in them.
What is happening...?
I think they don't really care (at least about the RayBans)
also gpt-4-turbo is mostlikely still training, its not even a finished product yet
It doesn’t need a data plan if they allowed you to tether to your phone with Bluetooth or wifi
Sad thing about the pin is the $25 subscription per month
A camera pinned on your chest already exists. Gopro. I wear it while skiing, forget to turn it off and end up filming my entire lunch.😂
I guess if it could tell me how many calories was in my goulash that could be a novelty.
Maybe once in a while I wish I could do a Black Mirror and record everything, and a year later I would have an AI find all instances of when someone was wrong in an argument.
What mic does he use?
Oh yeah I can see Apple making gear with these like Siri tees and jackets lol
The pin is basically a starfleet communicator, but different enough so they can't get sued over it.
The half dead delivery of the presenters for the AI pin feels almost like they’re trying to make it fail
I don't get why not to create a 50-100$ accessory that uses your phone as main processor, no data plan needed, no storage on pin, less battery consumption etc. Well, obviously, you wont get 500$ profit for every idiot this way, but you might get way more mainstream traction and sales.
Turbo is a fun word but those old buttons should have been called restrictor plates if they wanted a good motorsports analogy
Linus is just mad because you need regular sized hands for the pin's projector 😉
Bluetooth projector on your shoulder is the best way. 👍
I love the idea here. I dont love that it has to be its own device with its own data connection required.
You arent going to replace phones with this any more than the apple watch was going to. cut the price in half and make it a phone tethered ai assistant wearable that still has the projector and I'd be sold instantly.
why skip right over the creator copy protection assistance??
This video becomes gold if AI pin blows up and launches the new era lmao😂
Startrek nerds are gonna love that thing.
ex apple people are cultists who left the cult yet still have no idea how to live or succeed without their corporate shepherds telling them how to think and live
Ah yes, because normal people always talk this way about other people who… *checks notes* …have technology preferences.
Yep. Totally normal.
lol timestamp around 22:20 “my phone does this already” -> throwback to people before having a phone that did everything. “i already have a rolodex and a calculator why do i need a phone that does both and also plays music” lmao this is niche product but it’s not terrible. i could see something like this catching on with a niche crowd in just a few years
This is basically an idea from the movie "Her"
Aged like fine wine
projectors don't work in daylight, that its Achilles heal
I think you can get those weather stations with clocks that project the information on a wall with lasers from stores. Why not just get one of those for $5 and tape it on your forehead?
Let's bring back "2000"
Honestly, as a guy that sees a lot of AI assistant stuff and just want it, but ugh, who the hell wants a mediocre device like that? At best a lapel blue tooth device to connect to the AI device in your pocket makes sense (your phone!) that gives you a projector (just mildly useless still to me) or a chest mounted microphone and camera, but a dedicated device...
If it was free, I still wouldn't use it though... Like our phones, smart watches, laptops, etc are just better interfaces!
17:20 Oh no, same thoughts! Lol
The AI pin for voice commands is such a compromise. Since you have to tap it and it's not always listening it'll be used less than a smart speaker. It's more like Siri on your phone.
Turbo like in Intel Turbo Boost?
That AI pin is just the Apple Brooch from Big Mouth, they took a parody of an idea and made it a real product wtf.
UniFi is from former apple folks, that’s pretty good
With blackjack .... And lady's of the evening... You know what forget the ai pocket protector
Dan had the best part!
Can someone explain to me what they mean by “tokens” ?
we need timestamp guy for lmg clips or lmg clips clips
Wasn't Unifi/Ubiquiti also created by former Apple staff?
I don’t speak on behalf of all turbo-nerds out there because speaking isn’t really our thing anyway. I am however confident that many others also consider Dan to be a part of our Pantheon.
We also like Turbo, that's why Turbo Chicken Simulator is coming soon!
If you don't put your hand in the right place what do others see? Is everyone else getting annoyed by bright blue lights? Or blinded by laser?
humane's pin in deadcon arrival imo
