Y’all are living in the golden age of self teaching. I started self teaching (and taking a few courses at my community college) in 2000 and the amount of resources and courses available now is insane. Honestly the hardest thing at this point is sifting through all of the stuff available

I've always liked how you don't teach just the techniques but also the psychology of setting long-term goals. The whole "visualization before going to bed" is more powerful than most people know.
I'm a struggling self taught artist, I'm 38 & been drawing most my life but I really don't have much to show for it since I rarely took it seriously. I did take art classes for a bit but that was almost 20 years ago. It's been hard the past few years to really buckle down & draw but I've been trying my best to get into it, I've been behind on your videos but they're certainly helping.
As a self-taught artist, I can't thank you enough for the online community. I felt bad earlier because I couldn't go to the art department but after I saw many students' enthusiasm and passion got destroyed by our local education system maybe my path is not bad at all, let alone the professionals that I met in real life became good not really from college but because they spent countless hours practicing and exploring themselves
I have started taking art seriously again last year, With following your tutorials(and a couple other goated art youtubers) I have improved so much, That now I'm redrawing an art piece from last year and the difference is insane, in just 1 year!! Thank you so much for all the tutorials.
I am a self taught artist. I always tried my best to follow your advices inside your videos to my upmost ability. And yet, it is taking me forever cause monetarily, I cannot purchase your full classes for you to dissect my drawings. I will still try my best to follow your advices and improve my skills. Thank you so much for making this possible for people who can't afford art classes like me. 🙏
Always about that money, on top of getting TH-cam money. It’s sad but for some, art is a passion/hobby, and for others it’s just a way to get extra income. I get paid when winning fighting game tournaments but when I’m not doing that I’ll teach anyone how to play or understand the mechanics for free, even more so if my teachings are on pre recorded videos, because I get dopamine from seeing them finally get it because I already have enough income to support myself so anything I would charge someone for teaching them how to do what I love would just be extra disposable income to me and I’d only get to spread my knowledge to rich ppl or kids with parents able to pay me which I absolutely despise the idea of having grown up poor and having poor parents living paycheck to paycheck but still wanting to play and do the stuff rich kids get to do because they or their parents had the money. I’ve only been drawing 2 years daily now so I’m not a pro yet, but everything I DO know I’d gladly tell you anything I know the answer to for free brother
I love these videos because every time I watch something like this, I just get confirmation that I am on the right track to reahc my goals :D Another thing I firmly believe that no tool can do the work for you. No brush will do the rendering if YOU do not practice. HOWEVER your Soft Tilt brush enchanced my workflow fundamentally, it's just SO GOOD and convenient! Thank you for making it available for the vultures like me!
I'm still saving so I can afford the art program. Marc is my favorite artist hehe. Please make a video explaining how to actually earn consistently with your art. I see alot of social media artist make videos but no one really elaborates on the issue.
What I also find extremely important is to not only focus on goal-driven studies, but also optimise for fun/curiosity. When only doing goal driven studies, they'll become a chore really quickly, and it's easy to burn out on them. There's exercise/study/practice and there's execution. Matching these up was crucial for me to sketch/draw consistently. ie when I enjoyed drawing flowers/petals/organic things in general, I studied things that were applicable but also as small as possible. Example: Enjoy drawing portraits? Study the skull.
Following your tutorials and guidelines has been a blessing for me. Thanks to your teaching, I resumed my passion after giving up a long time ago. It's never too late to pursue our passion, but sometimes we lose our way and need guidance, especially if no one around you supports you
marc ! you look better each day !, you dont age like Keanu Reves and you art grows better with your look that is nice passive skill you allocated but hey what am i talking silly me , your art was amazing years ago before i even know about you haha , im just glad you doing great and im thankful for all your videos and help you shared you always be my art hero
This was amazing, thanks Marc. I practice religiously everyday, but due to a working a full time job, it's been difficult to focus on the direction I want to go in. Ironically that was your first step in this video. Now that I know what I want to do(character design), psychologically I feel a burden has been lifted and my practice sessions now have more focus. The other steps you provided will be of great help.
I have spent years, teaching myself to draw and paint. I always thought professionals would have the big qualifications but its great to know that's not always the case. I got into Andrew Loomis - How to draw book a good few years back. After doing the examples, I would definitely say I improved. So watching and practicing from your videos, I know will help me become a better artist.
I went to university for a very specific degree which did help but I think online learning is an awesome way to improve. Theres no chance of getting stuck with a bad teacher when you can find so many awesome channels. Heaps of artists do portfolio reviews too. You save so much money as well $100 a year for an online course compared to $20,000 for 3 years of Uni.
I started taking my art seriously 2 years ago, your videos & art school helped so much in the beginning really great for a basic understanding of the fundamentals! I just finished my first internship as a background artist :)
Sooo gotta treat it like a fighting game. Finding your character, learnning the moves then a few combos. Play against actual players, win/lose (losing is very important to learn and to get good). Seek different approach, learn new things, decompile them into smaller bits for easier learning and then get outside of your comfort zone. Noted!
One of the best artists here on TH-cam IMO, thank you for your continued amazing tutorials, sadly I am unable to afford the art program even with the sale but I'm still able to learn a ton just from the videos! Don't ever stop what you're doing 💯 (unless of course life took you on a different path you love hehe)

Great timing! I just did a flexible program for myself today to practice more consistently, then this video showed up. Thank you. I feel more motivated to keep going!
I understand the importance of sharing work with peers for feedback, but I can hardly ever do that due to extreme anxiety. Even when I'm proud of a piece, it's still a fight with myself to show even just my close friends. I really want to improve, I love pursuing art. But this hangup of mine has been a major obstacle. Do I have a chance even without feedback? I know I should try to overcome my fears, but it seems very daunting as of now. Also, I love your videos and your teaching style. You've helped me improve a lot!
It’s an uphill battle without feedback for sure, but I would think showing your friends is scarier than random people on the internet you’ll never meet and have no impact on your life no? At least that’s been my angle, I never show friends
There are definitely online art communities around full of folks that 1. Would love to help you 2. Know the exact feelings you're going through. Here's an idea you could try, present your first sketch pass in its roughest state in one of these communities and ask for specific feedback about what you have so far. If you and who you're sharing it with know it's in a super rough state it'll take the pressure off it being 'perfect' - its also leaving room open for improvements. Make it feel like a 'co creation' type process rather than a 'harsh critique, here's how much you suck' one 😅. Oh and most importantly, take feedback with a grain of salt. Does it align with what professional artists you know tend to say? Have they qualified the feedback with a 'why' ? Do they produce work you admire? Those are a few good ways you could go about checking. Good luck ❤

I've been a self-taught artist since I grabbed that marker when I was little and turned a white wall into my canvas. I've a ton of PTSD because of it 😅I just wanted to tell stories with my pictures and writing, but... RL had other plans and I can't reach my goals as I'm in commission hell forever.
My unique issue is I’m in College for Graphic Design so alot of my focus and time goes to that. And switching on the same tablets and computer from one design to another in a day is mentally and physically (sitting all day) taxing. I’ve tried to implement the 50/50 and 80/20 rule depending on the focus of the day and how pressing classwork is versus personal character design portfolio projects. This helps if I know I’ll have focus time to study and then working time where I can somewhat mindlessly comp something or do admin work. Though then an additional problem arises which is I’m in between learning multiple fundamentals. Both for Graphic Design and for Character Art. So this is all a big struggle. AI and layoffs talk online doesn’t help. Though I know right now the biggest priority is finishing college in about 4-5 months. Then I can go at my own pace again. To all still reading, please still find the time to stretch, workout, have fun outside of art. It fuels not only your body, but also your artwork with the experiences you have and people you interact and sometimes collaborate with. Sometimes you’ll have those days or a week you gotta just grind something out, which is fair. But even then take breaks when you can. Call someone for a short bit. Just take a breather. Rest is just as important as the study. Just can’t do too much of either.
I'm a self taught artist. And I like to draw things in my own style, my own version. I'm struggling to really tap into the art career path because of the people around me, that want me to pursue a different job or career and I can't seem to disobey them and instead follow my dreams. Marc, how do I really start? I wanna be like you. I think people can't seem to accept that I'm an artist and all I wanna do is to make art, earn a living by making art and making content about art.
My family forced me to go into science because “there’s no money in art” or so they thought, so I did what I had to do to get decent grades and used the rest of my free time to level up my art so I could prove them wrong and eventually succeed at it. We get enough time in a day to do it all if we want it bad enough. When you reach 18 nobody can tell you what to do, it’s your life not theirs. Just gotta make them happy until then ;)
No one is really self taught, whether u go to art school or not tbh even in art school u need to know a lot before even entering it, u learn basically from things around u or videos around you like this one, they teach you.
Super. But in the case we have no goals ? In my case, I draw merely because I like it, but I don't plan to create something or to become a professionnal. So there are no real hierarchy in what I should learn first. If I have a goal, it is generally because I am seeing someone drawing/painting something beautifully and I want to be able to do something equally beautiful. Sometime the thing is simple, so I can learn it directly or with minimal steps, sometimes it's more complex, and my previous experience may not have concerned the specifics step before learning that specific skill, so that It would ask to learn ton of things before creating this specific effect. How would you plan a cursus in these condition ?
Your course is very interesting, I’ve been self taught for like 10 years, just casually tho. I want to improve my color-skills and perspective things to make more dynamic poses for the characters I like to draw. Small question: Do you see a possibility to make the course available by chapter which can be purchased individually?
Honestly you're the best i would've payed for your course but the exchange rate of my country is too high Ive been trying to learn how to draw for a month now
Hey Marc, how would recommend to study the muscles of a body part? I’m currently watching a video about the muscles in the leg and I’m taking notes, but I don’t know if what I’m doing is enough.
I really love your tutorials and ur draws, i'm a little sad cause it's a little hard to me to follow cause my english is a little poor. I'm from Spain qwq. But i will see ur videos in any case!
Him: gaming breaks the focus ... and then theres me watching this while loading up a game. I will learn after that again at 11PM hehe :P as always thx for your tips and tutorials, they are very helpful ;)
What do I do if I don't have a clear goal? Overall I want to be a comic artist, but that doesnt feel solidified to me, I don't want it enough. There are also other things I want to do like animation and illustration for big companies or even smaller ones. Im stuck in a rut in my art journey right now and I crave to escape but I don't know how, I feel like I have so much potential but I'm not living up to it. Tbh my current biggest motivation is the study of art bc I love how complex it is and I love learning. Recently schedules have been helping w/ me organizing my life/time but I haven't been able to do it for art yet. I want to flourish, I want to explode with creativity, but I never have ideas, I don't know what to study at any given time, and I don't know what to do. Also I don't see the art schedule in the description could you put it there please? It seems like it could be helpful
Thanks so much for considering it! You don’t need to know anything to join the program, I have classes early on that will guide you through CSP/Photoshop (both nearly identical) so you’ll learn everything then. No requirements whatsoever! :)
What if I don't want to use my art for monetary purposes (now)? Most of the time I draw I do it to alleviate anxiety and depression, but I want my art to be much better and more believable and realistic. For me, my goal is making better art to lift my spirits. Maybe to create a portfolio for the future would be a nice bonus too.
hey the last thing you said made me think... if gaming is wasting my time, then what hobby should i choose? i know that reading books or things like that helps but they're not as hobby-ish you know. also for someone like me that has no irl friends
Marc do you have a art school for traditional artist? Also Marc i dont know if its a good idea but for feedback as you said in the video and also targeting goals and making plans.I have like chatgpt make like 10 week plans and i have it check my artwork,is this bad or should i have like someone that isn't chatgpt read and I should be more independent. Also i came to say sorry for bothering you with emails because i am trying to start a show and i send them to you becuase you are an tremendously great artist.I have send you emails of my artwork and i have been a pain in the ass and i will stop bothering you. i love your shirt!!!! and the content it is related to!
Thank you

Ty Master.
Just gotta make them happy until then ;)
Thanks... needed this
No one is really self taught, whether u go to art school or not tbh even in art school u need to know a lot before even entering it, u learn basically from things around u or videos around you like this one, they teach you.
Hmmm. Guessing my main goal is figure drawing; for fanart, OCs, and eventually commissions. It's a start I suppose.
Your course is very interesting, I’ve been self taught for like 10 years, just casually tho. I want to improve my color-skills and perspective things to make more dynamic poses for the characters I like to draw.
Small question: Do you see a possibility to make the course available by chapter which can be purchased individually?
Thanks so much for considering it! I have it available by individual terms (10 in total in the full program) on my store page :D
Honestly you're the best i would've payed for your course but the exchange rate of my country is too high
Ive been trying to learn how to draw for a month now
Man, I didn't know Ayase was a self-taught artist. Good for her!
I also a self taught artist I started drawing at very young age and now l'm 34 yrs
Hey Marc, how would recommend to study the muscles of a body part? I’m currently watching a video about the muscles in the leg and I’m taking notes, but I don’t know if what I’m doing is enough.
Watch this th-cam.com/video/z-xkcwZxO_s/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for your tutorials
I really love your tutorials and ur draws, i'm a little sad cause it's a little hard to me to follow cause my english is a little poor. I'm from Spain qwq. But i will see ur videos in any case!
Hi hi hi hi I WAS JUST WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO-
Welp I'm late again but a banger video idea for sure!
Appreciate it!
thanks for the calendar haha
Love the beard
Don’t worry Marc I’m still gonna buy the art program while it’s on sale lol
8:35 I have never felt like that ever in my life.
nvm its just my adhd.
Him: gaming breaks the focus ... and then theres me watching this while loading up a game. I will learn after that again at 11PM hehe :P
as always thx for your tips and tutorials, they are very helpful ;)
I learned to draw human body and head from you ❤
The beard is looking fire
I have a question for Marc or for those who purchased Marc’s brush packs. What is the difference between the basic and the studio license?
Hey Marc! I’ve got a question, if I want to buy the ART school, do I first have to learn how to use the software? Like Procreate or Photoshop?
Thanks so much for considering it! You don’t need to know anything to join the program, I have classes early on that will guide you through CSP/Photoshop (both nearly identical) so you’ll learn everything then. No requirements whatsoever! :)
Thank you so much!
public school or home school? both have benefits, both have costs
What if I don't want to use my art for monetary purposes (now)? Most of the time I draw I do it to alleviate anxiety and depression, but I want my art to be much better and more believable and realistic. For me, my goal is making better art to lift my spirits. Maybe to create a portfolio for the future would be a nice bonus too.
the goal is irrelevant, as long as you have one 👍
Hello there again :D
ngl seeing marc with a beard is crazy 💀
Yall went to art school? I didn’t know we were doing that now.
hey the last thing you said made me think... if gaming is wasting my time, then what hobby should i choose? i know that reading books or things like that helps but they're not as hobby-ish you know. also for someone like me that has no irl friends
Sincerely Jesiah
I think my self discipline is just kinda bad ngl. I acknowledge it, but I just can’t seem to fix it when I try. I always somehow find a way to mess it up…
Oh my Lord that Beard. Nice
Hi your brush set is too big for beginners. Is there a way to make it more beginner friendly?
Out here really trying to give artists a free education!😂
I just wanna say I went to Art school for 5 years and I'm in art University now and I still can't draw anatomical correct, pick the right colors, add value or shade... The list goes on
🥺
10:25 Yo, wtf?!
You were supposed to defeat them, not join them!
What schedule will you recommend to me? I am still going school and have only 2h a day
and btw, can I play some vid game after I practice;)
First
I've just watched
God job
But how do you self teach yourself from making beautiful art to making interesting art?
The people's champ.
epic!!
I'm struggling. I'm being torn apart by the thought of what to do, follow them or follow my dreams
