Sir i am sorry but i can't believe you said this painting turned out just Alright, while for me i think it is one of the greatest paintings i ever saw today, and i feel soooo inspired by your methods, ideas and paintings!! and the painting also scares me a bit hehe, i just love the idea behind it so damn much and the process too!!
A big mistake I make is not giving myself a break from art every once in a while. A pro wrestler named Ernie Ladd once said "Your brain is like a sponge, sometimes you need to wring it out," and heeding that advice has helped me a lot when dealing with burnout. Never be afraid to give yourself a break.
The problem with taking breaks is being diligent with how often and how long they are. If you don’t stick to some kind of schedule a “break” may end up being days, weeks, months…or even years…longer than you intended to stop doing art.
My biggest mistake as an artist was skipping out on practicing fundamentals. I prioritised anime over the basics. But now I have a somewhat solid understanding of form and perspective. I can draw a box from any angle and freehand perspective (including curvilinear). It’s never too late to learn the basics! :)
I can relate to it. Anime/Manga aesthetic is an stylization, and as any stylization, it is a way to see the reality that focuses on certains elements we want to enphasize. Studying fundamentals have been helping me how to improve my stylized drawings just because now I am more aware of what i want to enfasize and how to do it.
Whether you like it or not, A.I will play a huge role in future. Not now but future and it won't be and has never been about better. I know far better artists but they haven't got jobs or even a business with clients. It's about you having the...reach (more qualify eyeballs seeing your work) and reputation (they trust buying from you. You got credibility). Someone not better than you but got these two in place will always have plenty of clients who will pay what artists wants.

In fact method for me is some sort of complex of techniques you use in drawing. It may be order of drawing character by parts (head - torso - limbs), by layers(stickman - simple shapes - character), types of visualisation, etc.And when you follow it everytime many days, weeks it became much easier to draw everything cause you have a method, an instrucrion how to act when starting drawing
Marc, at one point you were working as a senior 3D artist & I remember once you said that 80% of your time in Blizzard you worked as a 3D artist. So from that experience can you please make a guide for 3D asset artist, especially someone working on stylized assets with things like hand painted textures, what to look for. How to improve in this segment? How to make stylization out of hard surface & organic stuff.
I think the too much theory one is something I deal with perpetually. Like, I have a clear image of how I WANT my art to turn out, it's just my hand doesn't know the steps yet. If that makes sense. Or to put it differently, I can see the mistakes I make, but no matter how I try I cannot fix them. I think it's just a case of needing to put in more hours actually drawing instead of researching/ learning. Thank you for another great class!
I really think that’s how it is. Your hand has to catch up to your brain. Now it is important to transfer your knowledge into your Hand movement. You got this!
It's that skill plateau that all artists struggle with, no matter their skill level. You get better at theory, you see flaws better, you think your art has gotten worse - when in truth you're just better at seeing the flaws. There's no easy way to get around it, you just have to look at your art objectively and from the time when you made it. What I do is I have folders dedicated for each year I've been doing art, and all pieces put in chronological order. I always try to recall what I loved about that past piece when I go through them one by one, what was my big breakthrough there, and that generally helps me get out of this dark mood. Seeing that undeniable, objective improvement gives perspective to your current struggles, and often enough, the feeling of a plateau just means that a new breakthrough is coming soon. The more frustrated you are, the more intent you are to solve it.
I’ve been there. It sucks. I think the best way to overcome it is try to draw that thing anyway. If something doesn’t look right like an arm, practice drawing a few arms on the side to try to figure out the structure and then try again. It’s a bit tedious but It’s the only thing that fixed it for me.
As for me personally a mistake that I do many times is that I compare myself to other great artists. I know comparing my art to others that are better than mine can be harmful and dull my passion for art. Sometimes it’s important to look up at other artists for reference to your own art but not to compare and remember that everyone learns at different paces including yourself and that it’s okay to not know everything about creating art.
Having recently done this, I found that a good "reality check" is to go WAY WAY WAY back in artists' profiles to see their early stuff. It really helps emphasis that its a journey and skills improve over time. My favorite artists weren't always "great" and I won't always be a beginner.

Just as you called out in the video, an artist's journey is also their life journey. I let my job consume my life and this bled into physical and mental health issues, not doing art anymore. Seeing your videos and remembering starting your art course a few years ago has re-invigorated my spark and passion again. After starting to do art again, it feels like my mental health is improving and in turn my physical health feels easier to control. Thanks for all that you do Marc.
I just started to teach myself to draw 4 months ago. I never did anything art related as a kid or in school, and it's such a relaxing hobby. All the best getting back into art!
a note on not forcing practice, from a current music major: 100% agree! taking time off is always very important, not just for your mental but for your physical health, too. one of my biggest struggles is knowing how much i should be practicing piano, and when i need to take a break. times always come when i'm feeling great and practice a ton, but you need to be careful so you don't hurt yourself (speaking from experience -- tendinitis in both wrists, so grateful i caught it before carpal tunnel became an issue 😅) all this being said though, understand that real, thorough practice IS essential when developing a skill. relying on your own whims to know when to practice is not enough -- especially if you plan on making a career out of something creative like art or music. sometimes, i do have to force myself to sit down on the piano bench and play. most of the time, when i do, i feel more inspired after a couple minutes amd continuing on becomes much easier after that initial roadblock. other times, things still aren't clicking and nothing i can do will help, so in those cases i'll step away and come back later. tl;dr: don't force yourself to the point of burnout, but also understand that regular practice is essential and sometimes you do need to push yourself just to get started, and once you do, continuing on is easy.
You know, Marc, I've been watching your videos for a couple years now. I've always found it difficult to draw because I never believed I could achieve anything in this field, I still don't, to be honest. But your videos have always helped me to move forward, step by step, and even now, when I haven't picked up a stylus for three weeks. I just wanted to say thank you for everything. Maybe I'm still drawing only because of your videos, because you showed me that anything is possible, even if it's difficult. I think I'll try to draw something again tomorrow😊
Could you maybe make a video on what common methods there are to creating a piece? I feel like this is what keeps me from progressing the most. I never have a plan and sometimes do stuff really sporadically and get lost in the process.
Man, Mistake #1 resonates so much...so much time I've wasted zoomed in and chasing stray pixels, or fixing stuff because I didn't solve problems in the early drafting stages of a drawing!
I rarely hear good advice, kudos, as a long time artist myself i do find a lot of wisdom in your advice. lol, today i feel tired, and you convinced me to then color and not try to force myself to go to the drawing board. i will get to it if i get in a better mood, but right now i just want to do simple tasks.
What I've done to stay creative (especially with a growing family of two kids and another one in the way): - Draw on physical paper (I like doing character designs on paper --love the feeling of a physical pencil going through the page) - Writting (originals or fanfics, whatever -- and doing character designs for these stories) - Reading novels (whenever my studies allow for it u.u) - Learning piano (recently) - NOT playing videogames (sadly, as it was my main hobby for almost 40 years) - Searching for spirituality and faith (it's very personal, but believe me it has worked for me) What I'm still lacking: - Physical health and exercise.
@@vinniko I'm not him but gonna say that helps me (to not play videogames). That I get comfortable with being bored so then I get inspired by ideas (my mind is free to navigate). What videogames do to our mind is to not let you focus on important things, say is a waste of time is understatement at this moment. You quit videogames you stay focus and you get result on real life (whatever the subject).

My biggest issue right now is trying to process everything. I usually stop going forward in the program because I want to master what I just learned. Then I forget everything else when I do eventually move forward. Maybe I should finish the course first and then go back and refine what I learned.
I cycle through periods of several things, drawing (traditionally and digitally), 3D (traditional and digital sculpting and 3D modelling) and video editing.
I have trouble getting myself to practice theory because I keep getting excited over new ideas and do project after project without practicing things like gesture drawing and perspective.
My mistake that I'm fixing (similar to the studying point): When wasn't happy with my portfolio anymore I used to just jump and try to "fix it" or making new pieces. But the new pieces were done on a rush and even when done with care were not that much better than the oldest. Actually taking some time to practice something, making your fundamentals stronger and only THEN create new pieces (the fun part!) will actually make your portfolio better :)
8:25 omg same, when I don't draw it snowballs hard and I start to think "maybe I don't like drawing, maybe I should quit, how do I draw again? Who made all these drawings from the past it's not me anymore" etc etc... then the moment I pick up drawing again, I remember everything
#2 is/was my issue. 15-20 years ago I was drawing what I wanted to draw but I couldn't draw it how I wanted. So I turned to learning more, I focused on areas I knew I was bad at. I started from the beginning and relearnt to try to undo some bad habits. But I did that for so long, I stopped drawing for the fun of it. I stopped drawing because I wanted to create something and instead just to get better. Now (and for the last 5 years at least), I find it hard to draw creatively. I feel like I've lost my creativity, I have no ideas. And when I do stumble on an idea, without references, it doesn't turn out how I know it should, I can point out the defects, and am never content with it, which makes me less inclined to do creative work. Now studies feel easier and specially when encountering your 4th point, I try to keep myself to a schedule to draw and I'm often falling behind in my schedule - drawing studies is faster, and less stressful. I don't have to think about it as much, so I fall back on it more often.
So true on too much theory, sometimes I overthink things when i shouldn't and the piece slows down dramatically. I think one of my mistakes would be to envision the end product and not being flexible with changing the idea even if it means completely scrapping it. I like to add to the "forcing yourself to draw" segment that I think can help get back into it is to maybe go back to one piece you've worked on that you might not be happy with and redesign it, that way you're not doing too much heavy lifting, using your creative juices, you remember your methods by examining your piece, and you'll give yourself a bit of a drive knowing you can do a better version.
My old taekwondo master used to be fond of the saying “practice makes perfect, but if you practice crap, you’ll only ever be perfect at crap” blindly practicing by “doing” won’t help you improve unless your practice is doing things “the right way”. That’s why it’s important to have a good teacher (not just a peer, but someone you look up to that you think has expertise over what you’re trying to learn)

Great intro😂😂 that one got me. Thing I always find when I’m struggling the most is that I’m either not using enough references or more often than not, I’m not using the RIGHT references. You can find a picture of basically anything these days so it’s worth taking the time to find something that works best for what you’re trying to draw, whether it’s a pose or a prop, saves a lot of time in the long run
i miss v2 swain's ult build up mechanic where it does more damage the longer they are inside it, it would make so much more sense now that it is potentially infinite

Im currently giving my best effort as a artist and I am confident that my art is improving day by day. But again its that thought that not drawing often will not increase my skill. And Yes iam aware that being a professional artist will take decades to achieve and I barely scratch the surface of my true capabilities I just want enough mental support as well as the motivation to keep pushing towards my goal as a artist in various factors. I'm in the middle of a multi-year break from drawing, been trying to slowly get back into drawing again but damn is it hard to motivate myself to draw, even when I do I just tend to fumble around with doodles for a few hours and not really like anything enough to continue it or if I do start something I like and want to continue by the time I get back to it I have no interest in continuing it. I know that's not necessarily a bad thing since I'm actually drawing a bit, shaking the rust off, but it's tough to motivate myself to draw when I don't even work on completing something, its all just doodles I usually throw away
Honestly this painting is gorgeous but I really really liked the broken sword. I think it tells a much bigger story. This kid took his sister out with his dad's old sword for an adventure, and now he's quite literally in waters too deep. There's a sense of wonder and discovery with the colours but also subtle danger due to the expression of the giant mermaid, that's just my take.
I need advice from fellow artists. When I do art commissions, my clients usually tell me what kind of character designs, pose they'd like. And trust me with the rest of the process. I feel like those commission arts came out really good and I feel very proud with those. But recently I had clients who want me to change the way I draw. For example, they want the character's body facing sideway, but ask me to draw the two shoulders to be the exact same length. They want the character's face tilting downwards and in 3/4 view, but then show me the full front facing face, asking me to draw the jaw line exactly as that. Or they want the character's hand really big, like bigger than the head. Everytime I see anatomy/ perspective mistake and fix it, they seem to like the wrong version more? The list goes on and on. I keep having to explain things to them. The commission took waaay more time than usual. Sometimes, we compromised. Sometimes, i went with what they like. The thing is, I finished one of their commissions, and they seem to be satisfied. But I'm not. I can see where I could do better. I don't even want to post that on my socials like I usually do. Now, I have to start another art for that same client. I can't bring myself to sketch. I feel like I forgot how to draw. What do you do in these type of situation? (They commissioned multiple pieces all at once. And with my current situation, I can't just refund and cancel.) Sorry for the long paragraphs. It's been bugging my mind this whole month.😫
For me i think one art mistake is ignoring the drawing fundamentals "sequence" when learning When i finally drew my first perfect portrait .. i realized that i couldn't do the same with all kind of faces I didn't have any knowledge about face planes or structure to apply them in any kind of features Btw , your channel taught me and guided me so well .. not satisfied with my level yet but happy that I'm doing it the right way. I have been going through a similar experience unfortunately, only recently I have tried to actually change myself as an artist. Go draw what you love first, then learn how to draw it better. I feel like I've wasted a year "improving" my art when I've only been practicing and no actual pieces to apply my efforts. Draw more what you love, practice less, think creatively, and enjoy other things in life. Never forget to balance
The second mistake is the one keeping me down the most. I truly believe to have pretty good theory but my actual practice is missing so any time i pick up a pen and I start drawing I Always feel like everything about it is wrong and stop alltogether even though most of the time i'm only on the first stages of the drawing...

👍#761- I have Your 'Art School Program' and keep trying to got my schedule set to where i can take advantage of it, but 'IF' is the middle word in "LIFE" (🤷♂️); so its been challenging to do so. I also have Your 'brush pack', but i use KRITA and for some reason i can't find anyone that has explained it in a way for "my brain" to understand how to get them to work within it yet (🤷♂️, the smoothest of brains i have), but maybe one day. Now, as for this week lesson: Excellent video, loaded with great advice and the background art was/is great as well. I (like You) have ADD/ADHD and sometimes it is hard to stick to a routine, even though out brains love them, were not always fully in tune with it. I also do lots of other things creatively, to keep it flowing; such as wood burning, origami, cooking (one of my favs as well), pretty much anything i can do to create with my hands; cause it may not be drawing, but it had that creative part of my brain engaged, which is the main thing. So, I'll end my comment/rant/ADHD babble with acknowledging that "I'm glad you finally got to speak on this topic!" and i can't wait for next weeks class; but also "Wish Me Luck" on my trying to get my schedule "locked in" so i can officially(finally) start you course and be actually be an active member of the Discord! 🙇
Hmm, but Marc sensei, I'm not sure what you mean about "using a method". I know I have a list of steps that go from sketching, separating in different layers elements that go on top of other things (like clothes over a body), and then sorting those dirty lines, doing the lineart, filling the flats and then the shading and then some compositing for background and foreground. How can we be sure that what are using is not good if you don't have the chance of comparing yourself to the workflow of others? Is there room for improvement? It takes me 2 days at most to finish a piece but I only has like 6 hours to use on artwork daily. Also I need to force myself to draw because when I don't draw I feel like I start to lose the consistency of my characters. I do 3D in between but when I'm focused on 3D I get this nagging feeling that I'll go back to square 1 with my characters and start to fumble again at drawing them in different angles. I don't know, is like a creeping fear I has, forgetting how to construct your own characters.
Aaand will just add another comment of the same: I don't understand the step 1. What is "using a method"? I am definitely using "my method" based on random info gathered from tutorial videos. I feel that I am inefficient with this (or at least super slow), but then again, I am not sure. Is separating layers and using layer styles like "multiply" - a method? all this being said though, understand that real, thorough practice IS essential when developing a skill. relying on your own whims to know when to practice is not enough -- especially if you plan on making a career out of something creative like art or music. sometimes, i do have to force myself to sit down on the piano bench and play. most of the time, when i do, i feel more inspired after a couple minutes amd continuing on becomes much easier after that initial roadblock. other times, things still aren't clicking and nothing i can do will help, so in those cases i'll step away and come back later.
tl;dr: don't force yourself to the point of burnout, but also understand that regular practice is essential and sometimes you do need to push yourself just to get started, and once you do, continuing on is easy.
You know, Marc, I've been watching your videos for a couple years now. I've always found it difficult to draw because I never believed I could achieve anything in this field, I still don't, to be honest. But your videos have always helped me to move forward, step by step, and even now, when I haven't picked up a stylus for three weeks. I just wanted to say thank you for everything. Maybe I'm still drawing only because of your videos, because you showed me that anything is possible, even if it's difficult.

I feel like this is what keeps me from progressing the most. I never have a plan and sometimes do stuff really sporadically and get lost in the process.
Man, Mistake #1 resonates so much...so much time I've wasted zoomed in and chasing stray pixels, or fixing stuff because I didn't solve problems in the early drafting stages of a drawing!
I rarely hear good advice, kudos, as a long time artist myself i do find a lot of wisdom in your advice. lol, today i feel tired, and you convinced me to then color and not try to force myself to go to the drawing board. i will get to it if i get in a better mood, but right now i just want to do simple tasks.
What I've done to stay creative (especially with a growing family of two kids and another one in the way):
- Draw on physical paper (I like doing character designs on paper --love the feeling of a physical pencil going through the page)
- Writting (originals or fanfics, whatever -- and doing character designs for these stories)
- Reading novels (whenever my studies allow for it u.u)
- Learning piano (recently)
- NOT playing videogames (sadly, as it was my main hobby for almost 40 years)
- Searching for spirituality and faith (it's very personal, but believe me it has worked for me)
What I'm still lacking:
- Physical health and exercise.
I'm curious, how has not playing videogames in particular helped you stay creative?
@@vinniko I'm not him but gonna say that helps me (to not play videogames). That I get comfortable with being bored so then I get inspired by ideas (my mind is free to navigate). What videogames do to our mind is to not let you focus on important things, say is a waste of time is understatement at this moment. You quit videogames you stay focus and you get result on real life (whatever the subject).
Cooking and eating delicious meals are good for relaxing. I love to combine national and international recipes - fusion cooking.
I recently started working out and I can't tell you how much am enjoying my drawing hours, now to fix and avoid the rest of the mistakes. Incredible video Marc and love the painting really reminds me of your classic deviantart illustrations

My biggest issue right now is trying to process everything. I usually stop going forward in the program because I want to master what I just learned. Then I forget everything else when I do eventually move forward. Maybe I should finish the course first and then go back and refine what I learned.

I cycle through periods of several things, drawing (traditionally and digitally), 3D (traditional and digital sculpting and 3D modelling) and video editing.
I have trouble getting myself to practice theory because I keep getting excited over new ideas and do project after project without practicing things like gesture drawing and perspective.
My mistake that I'm fixing (similar to the studying point): When wasn't happy with my portfolio anymore I used to just jump and try to "fix it" or making new pieces. But the new pieces were done on a rush and even when done with care were not that much better than the oldest. Actually taking some time to practice something, making your fundamentals stronger and only THEN create new pieces (the fun part!) will actually make your portfolio better :)
8:25 omg same, when I don't draw it snowballs hard and I start to think "maybe I don't like drawing, maybe I should quit, how do I draw again? Who made all these drawings from the past it's not me anymore" etc etc... then the moment I pick up drawing again, I remember everything
Honestly I never get upset when my art looks bad or when i make a mistake because that means i know what i can work on to improve on it. :’)
#2 is/was my issue. 15-20 years ago I was drawing what I wanted to draw but I couldn't draw it how I wanted. So I turned to learning more, I focused on areas I knew I was bad at. I started from the beginning and relearnt to try to undo some bad habits. But I did that for so long, I stopped drawing for the fun of it. I stopped drawing because I wanted to create something and instead just to get better. Now (and for the last 5 years at least), I find it hard to draw creatively. I feel like I've lost my creativity, I have no ideas. And when I do stumble on an idea, without references, it doesn't turn out how I know it should, I can point out the defects, and am never content with it, which makes me less inclined to do creative work. Now studies feel easier and specially when encountering your 4th point, I try to keep myself to a schedule to draw and I'm often falling behind in my schedule - drawing studies is faster, and less stressful. I don't have to think about it as much, so I fall back on it more often.
So true on too much theory, sometimes I overthink things when i shouldn't and the piece slows down dramatically.
I think one of my mistakes would be to envision the end product and not being flexible with changing the idea even if it means completely scrapping it.
I like to add to the "forcing yourself to draw" segment that I think can help get back into it is to maybe go back to one piece you've worked on that you might not be happy with and redesign it, that way you're not doing too much heavy lifting, using your creative juices, you remember your methods by examining your piece, and you'll give yourself a bit of a drive knowing you can do a better version.

My old taekwondo master used to be fond of the saying “practice makes perfect, but if you practice crap, you’ll only ever be perfect at crap” blindly practicing by “doing” won’t help you improve unless your practice is doing things “the right way”. That’s why it’s important to have a good teacher (not just a peer, but someone you look up to that you think has expertise over what you’re trying to learn)

Thing I always find when I’m struggling the most is that I’m either not using enough references or more often than not, I’m not using the RIGHT references. You can find a picture of basically anything these days so it’s worth taking the time to find something that works best for what you’re trying to draw, whether it’s a pose or a prop, saves a lot of time in the long run

Im currently giving my best effort as a artist and I am confident that my art is improving day by day. But again its that thought that not drawing often will not increase my skill.
And Yes iam aware that being a professional artist will take decades to achieve and I barely scratch the surface of my true capabilities I just want enough mental support as well as the motivation to keep pushing towards my goal as a artist in various factors.
And Marc sensei is totally the best art mentor I can learn from.

I'm in the middle of a multi-year break from drawing, been trying to slowly get back into drawing again but damn is it hard to motivate myself to draw, even when I do I just tend to fumble around with doodles for a few hours and not really like anything enough to continue it or if I do start something I like and want to continue by the time I get back to it I have no interest in continuing it. I know that's not necessarily a bad thing since I'm actually drawing a bit, shaking the rust off, but it's tough to motivate myself to draw when I don't even work on completing something, its all just doodles I usually throw away

Honestly this painting is gorgeous but I really really liked the broken sword. I think it tells a much bigger story. This kid took his sister out with his dad's old sword for an adventure, and now he's quite literally in waters too deep. There's a sense of wonder and discovery with the colours but also subtle danger due to the expression of the giant mermaid, that's just my take.
I need advice from fellow artists.
When I do art commissions, my clients usually tell me what kind of character designs, pose they'd like. And trust me with the rest of the process. I feel like those commission arts came out really good and I feel very proud with those.
But recently I had clients who want me to change the way I draw. For example, they want the character's body facing sideway, but ask me to draw the two shoulders to be the exact same length.
They want the character's face tilting downwards and in 3/4 view, but then show me the full front facing face, asking me to draw the jaw line exactly as that.
Or they want the character's hand really big, like bigger than the head.
Everytime I see anatomy/ perspective mistake and fix it, they seem to like the wrong version more?
The list goes on and on.
I keep having to explain things to them. The commission took waaay more time than usual. Sometimes, we compromised. Sometimes, i went with what they like.
The thing is, I finished one of their commissions, and they seem to be satisfied. But I'm not. I can see where I could do better. I don't even want to post that on my socials like I usually do.
Now, I have to start another art for that same client. I can't bring myself to sketch. I feel like I forgot how to draw.
What do you do in these type of situation? (They commissioned multiple pieces all at once. And with my current situation, I can't just refund and cancel.)

For me i think one art mistake is ignoring the drawing fundamentals "sequence" when learning
When i finally drew my first perfect portrait .. i realized that i couldn't do the same with all kind of faces
I didn't have any knowledge about face planes or structure to apply them in any kind of features
Btw , your channel taught me and guided me so well .. not satisfied with my level yet but happy that I'm doing it the right way.

I have been going through a similar experience unfortunately, only recently I have tried to actually change myself as an artist.
Go draw what you love first, then learn how to draw it better. I feel like I've wasted a year "improving" my art when I've only been practicing and no actual pieces to apply my efforts.
Draw more what you love, practice less, think creatively, and enjoy other things in life. Never forget to balance

👍#761- I have Your 'Art School Program' and keep trying to got my schedule set to where i can take advantage of it, but 'IF' is the middle word in "LIFE" (🤷♂️); so its been challenging to do so. I also have Your 'brush pack', but i use KRITA and for some reason i can't find anyone that has explained it in a way for "my brain" to understand how to get them to work within it yet (🤷♂️, the smoothest of brains i have), but maybe one day.
Now, as for this week lesson: Excellent video, loaded with great advice and the background art was/is great as well. I (like You) have ADD/ADHD and sometimes it is hard to stick to a routine, even though out brains love them, were not always fully in tune with it. I also do lots of other things creatively, to keep it flowing; such as wood burning, origami, cooking (one of my favs as well), pretty much anything i can do to create with my hands; cause it may not be drawing, but it had that creative part of my brain engaged, which is the main thing. So, I'll end my comment/rant/ADHD babble with acknowledging that "I'm glad you finally got to speak on this topic!" and i can't wait for next weeks class; but also "Wish Me Luck" on my trying to get my schedule "locked in" so i can officially(finally) start you course and be actually be an active member of the Discord! 🙇

Hmm, but Marc sensei, I'm not sure what you mean about "using a method". I know I have a list of steps that go from sketching, separating in different layers elements that go on top of other things (like clothes over a body), and then sorting those dirty lines, doing the lineart, filling the flats and then the shading and then some compositing for background and foreground. How can we be sure that what are using is not good if you don't have the chance of comparing yourself to the workflow of others? Is there room for improvement? It takes me 2 days at most to finish a piece but I only has like 6 hours to use on artwork daily. Also I need to force myself to draw because when I don't draw I feel like I start to lose the consistency of my characters. I do 3D in between but when I'm focused on 3D I get this nagging feeling that I'll go back to square 1 with my characters and start to fumble again at drawing them in different angles. I don't know, is like a creeping fear I has, forgetting how to construct your own characters.
Aaand will just add another comment of the same: I don't understand the step 1.
