Even if you’ve been drawing for years, this is still relevant! I have been drawing for 4 years and i only have been practicing for 1 year. It is good to always look at the fundamentals, and don’t get overwhelmed but set up a plan to take everything little by little, also, remember to have fun! Don’t just study all the time :)
No offense but is 4 years supposed to be a 'long time?'. I'm at it for 5 years now and it still feels like i'm just getting started. I may just be super slow though
@@chaosl9860 It depends on how you practice, focused studies and tackle different fundamentals with repeated practice you can improve even in 1 year, it doesn't matter how long, more like how long you've been doing it over and over, once per week won't cut it
@@chaosl9860 no, it is about this “ phase” that he talks about in this video. First time practicing for example the fundamentals will be slow and harsh and you might not see a lot of progress, but if you keep doing this, it will come easier and you will see differences in no time. If this doesn’t make sense to you, think about it as a sport. Funfact, people don’t see a lot of result the first 6 months of going to the gym. After such a period, something kicks in and they are seeing changes rapidly. Just don’t give up, and watch some more marc brunet on “how to study the right way”
This fase to get in can take years sometimes because people first don’t really focus on improving. As he said, this is something you see often in kids and when they grow older they will start to study the fundamentals

And I'm happy to say that I have made really great progress whenever I draw rather it be the body, face and even hands which your video really helped me out on. What if the younger you had a different more pleasing style? I look at my old drawings and while they weren’t well realistic/anatomy accurate, I sometimes feel as if it has something better than what I draw now xD.
So true. I still have the first ever digital drawing I did. Had 0, I mean NOTHING, no recipe on how to draw a head and I go back and look at that drawing when I need a reminder that I AM getting better.

I've been drawing since 2016, at that time I continued to draw, I drew things around, anime characters and so on. one time I started to feel bored drawing and rarely drew, in the end my drawing didn't make any progress. my advice to beginners out there to be diligent in drawing even when you are bored, it's okay if you want to take a break, but don't let you stop because when you stop drawing, you might forget how to draw
I would also suggest you figure out what can inspire you and encourage you to draw more. I get inspired from artists on Instagram or Pinterest (go Pinterest if IG gets too toxic) and I’ve found that gesture drawing really gets me more in the mood to draw, even though I feel like I’m not great with gestures. But these have helped me draw more in the past few months than I ever did in the last ten years, and I’ve improved SO MUCH just from sticking to it.
Then I don't know if I should even start learning how to draw. It seems like my routine with any hobby, whether it's programming, specific video games or sculpting with plasticine, is *"do it for a day or two, a few weeks at most, then get bored/annoyed/lose inspiration and quit for an unspecified ammount of time."* It's not worth learning how to draw if I'm just gonna quit early and forget everything in a month or so. :( (wow, that's like the peak of my pessimism. I haven't even watched the video and I already feel it won't change anything)
@@robertlupa8273 Gotta adjust your mindset before anything else. If you convince yourself of something, whatever the truth is, your mindset and actions will follow that thought process. Try to avoid beating yourself up so much (trust me, experience). Rethink your approach to your hobbies and take baby steps towards whatever you want. That applies to learning to draw or any of your other hobbies. But if you really think something isn’t worth it to you, don’t let that big you down either. Personally, I tend to beat myself up in thinking “oh man, I was supposed to do this and I didn’t,” when I really just set my goals to too high of a level to start with. Monitor yourself and figure out whatever you want. You can adjust whatever you need to from there to work towards what you want. Just be kind to yourself in the process, no matter what you do.
I've only started a few months ago and it's really frustrating. Your videos always help me to find a guideline to have meaningful practice and get better tho. Appreciate it as always 🙏
It's always good to get a refresher and taken the fundamentals I'd recently just got back into drawing and I have a drawing pad so I'm collecting a bunch of videos so I can binge-watch and practice.
I've been an artist for over twelve years, two of which I've been full time professional, but I ALWAYS get such good value from Marc's videos. I love to just roll back and watch these like I'm just starting off in my journey.
Thanks for mentioning the age thing. I’m 16 and due to mental health I haven’t done much even though I’ve tried to start doing art for years. Then I see a 12 year old drawing realistic human faces and I feel like a failure. So, thank you for affirming me that I can start now and not be a loser.
babe i'm 21, a part of me always wanted to draw but i just didn't. Honestly, for me you are on the perfect age since ins those years where the emotions and life starts to hit you so yeah, imagine all that motivation heh
24 over here and only recently started drawing consistently and practising daily. I feel late in comparison to some, but I'm happy with my progress and my rate of advancement :)
I am 34 and just started drawing a few months ago and God, this is so much fun. My advice, just start and do it for fun. The improvement you'll notice week after week, month after month, is borderline addictive
@JaydenMakesArt don't draw to be good, draw for fun. It's fun to make things and it's fun to make them better. Step by step you'll become good and you won't even notice! Art is amazing and I'm envious about your early start, now don't squander the extra time you have!
I began art training as a commercial artist in trade school, approx 1978, I was a draw stuff kid for years before. My training began with tools that were obsolete by the late 80s. A few years later I went to community college as a fine art education major. I didn't complete it to a degree bc I felt like I was rehashing what I had learned already in trade school. I'm 61 now and it was very interesting to me to see how art (beginner) is taught now using the current tools. I thought you did a great job of getting a lot of important information across in a short amount of time. Well done!... When you talk about anatomy, you stated facts. Even for us that do cartoony or not realistic stuff, knowing human anatomy and even animal anatomy is a MUST. I really enjoyed your video :)

Just graduated from an art degree. Your lessons are more in depth and practically applicable than some of the guidance I got at university, especially when it comes to discussing the necessary tasks and steps. Also, the best thing about all your videos is seeing you draw in them, even if it’s just a 30 sec sketch of a rock or a face it’s invaluable to see how skilled artists actually work and draw. i've been drawing for as long as I remember, even tried to go to school but never was able to do anything in my 30 years of existence, because of wasting time but also because I wasnt in a good place mentally. But your videos really helped me push to the grind. And I've taken some of your more mental health advice and found an art community that's been of a great help. I ordered a samsung tablet a few days ago with the main purpose of taking notes during lectures. I got it second hand from another country so it's gonna take another month or so to get here, but even though the reason I got it is for school, I'm suddenly extremely excited to try out art on it and just can't wait for it to get here
Actually a very well put together video. I am new to art and was previously studying boring engineering stuff. It is crazy how much this has helped me, and I haven’t even done any of these exercises yet! My main struggle with art is being creative enough to come up with something on my own, without relying completely on a reference. I’m just a dumb beginner but I wanted to start commissions - no contacts. Not even 20+ views over my commission sheets. It’s honestly really discouraging but it also just makes me want to get better so I can stick out more in the industry.
hey, another dumb beginner here. My advice for what to do if you want to stick out more in the industry is by drawing what YOU LIKE drawing. If there's a piece that you have already done and you really enjoyed it, then do it again, but maybe use different colors, or a different brush, or even give yourself a smaller canvas to work with.
@zenith613 That's awesome! One digital app that I highly recommend (and the only one that I use) is Krita. It's amazing and pretty easy to get used to for beginners. I hope your first piece goes really well! :)
I've drew alot back in highschool and coming back after 6 years... I just feel so lost and when i do finish one and look at my old stuff.. i feel conflicted but i'll give it a try again i guess.

This actually helped me so much. I didn't know where to start and what to learn first at all. This video saved my life fr, it's so well explained and it's really motivating too. I always see lots of artists around me being way better than me at a younger age, so I stopped drawing around five years ago. It took ages to accept that I have my own pace and that I shouldn't compare myself to others and I'm glad you mentioned that too. All in all an amazing video
I'm a total beginner trying to learn art because I just want to be able to make nice-looking things while putting ideas to paper and I want to do it just for its own enjoyment. Plus, you are absolutely correct that simply trying to learn new things is good for your brain and overall health

This was actually super helpful, I got down on myself recently for perpetually needing references. As you explained why you should use references and how to use them in the best way I realised I am doing that. I even realised that with one thing (mushrooms) I truly understand how they work in and out because of references and that is the reason why I don't need the references anymore when drawing them.
I am impressed that you were able to condense so much information into 17 minutes. Didn’t feel rushed. If I tried to recap the last year a Videos in a single video it would take about as long as all the videos.

You've been my number one teacher here in the internets, I'm documenting my own progress into a semi-tutorial series but im an amateur, this makes me feel like im on the right path and maybe shouldv'e thrown more into my own videos as i summarized the first steps in learning/ succeeding in art as self-discipline number one and construction, anatomy(gesture) and perspective as the first things to hone down. I've been out of drawing lately for the past couple of weeks, I had to move all the way across the country to the west coast so I didn't really have much time to draw. but now I think I want to start tackling it againand really start sharpening up.
I used to be very good at drawing when i was a child. As a teen and young adult, i stopped drawing... I'm 32 now, but i haven't forget illustration. I just like it a lot, but some things in my life took more relevance to me. Now i want to go back and continue learning. I would love to be a professional like you, but I have so much to learn yet, that i get overwhelmed when i try to start again. I have so so so much to learn and practice.

Well, got me to sub. Stopped drawing at the age of 16, 24 now and wondering how far my skills would've been had I not stopped. Getting back into it and teaching myself once again from the grond up. This gave me quite the motivation and set my self a direction.
Literally me! But then I realized that it's not much about being old, and more that the parts that I was comfortable with in my life are over, getting close to finishing school and going to college or getting a job, having to pick a career and all. Feeling all the pressure around you to have your life set already kinda makes you feel like your life is over, at least for me

Have been 11 months, almost 1 year, how is your study going???
I've been drawing since 2016, at that time I continued to draw, I drew things around, anime characters and so on. one time I started to feel bored drawing and rarely drew, in the end my drawing didn't make any progress. my advice to beginners out there to be diligent in drawing even when you are bored, it's okay if you want to take a break, but don't let you stop because when you stop drawing, you might forget how to draw
I would also suggest you figure out what can inspire you and encourage you to draw more. I get inspired from artists on Instagram or Pinterest (go Pinterest if IG gets too toxic) and I’ve found that gesture drawing really gets me more in the mood to draw, even though I feel like I’m not great with gestures. But these have helped me draw more in the past few months than I ever did in the last ten years, and I’ve improved SO MUCH just from sticking to it.

Then I don't know if I should even start learning how to draw. It seems like my routine with any hobby, whether it's programming, specific video games or sculpting with plasticine, is *"do it for a day or two, a few weeks at most, then get bored/annoyed/lose inspiration and quit for an unspecified ammount of time."* It's not worth learning how to draw if I'm just gonna quit early and forget everything in a month or so. :(

@@robertlupa8273 Gotta adjust your mindset before anything else. If you convince yourself of something, whatever the truth is, your mindset and actions will follow that thought process. Try to avoid beating yourself up so much (trust me, experience). Rethink your approach to your hobbies and take baby steps towards whatever you want. That applies to learning to draw or any of your other hobbies. But if you really think something isn’t worth it to you, don’t let that big you down either.
Personally, I tend to beat myself up in thinking “oh man, I was supposed to do this and I didn’t,” when I really just set my goals to too high of a level to start with. Monitor yourself and figure out whatever you want. You can adjust whatever you need to from there to work towards what you want. Just be kind to yourself in the process, no matter what you do.
I've only started a few months ago and it's really frustrating. Your videos always help me to find a guideline to have meaningful practice and get better tho. Appreciate it as always 🙏
It's always good to get a refresher and taken the fundamentals I'd recently just got back into drawing and I have a drawing pad so I'm collecting a bunch of videos so I can binge-watch and practice.

Thanks for mentioning the age thing. I’m 16 and due to mental health I haven’t done much even though I’ve tried to start doing art for years. Then I see a 12 year old drawing realistic human faces and I feel like a failure. So, thank you for affirming me that I can start now and not be a loser.

I am 34 and just started drawing a few months ago and God, this is so much fun. My advice, just start and do it for fun. The improvement you'll notice week after week, month after month, is borderline addictive

I began art training as a commercial artist in trade school, approx 1978, I was a draw stuff kid for years before. My training began with tools that were obsolete by the late 80s. A few years later I went to community college as a fine art education major. I didn't complete it to a degree bc I felt like I was rehashing what I had learned already in trade school. I'm 61 now and it was very interesting to me to see how art (beginner) is taught now using the current tools. I thought you did a great job of getting a lot of important information across in a short amount of time. Well done!... I hope you inspire and teach someone who loves being and artist and never stops.! Best wishes. And ty for keeping art alive!
I improved the most with your tips, and I have been watching art tutorials for the past month after deciding to pick up my pen again after literal years of not touching art due to depression. When you talk about anatomy, you stated facts. Even for us that do cartoony or not realistic stuff, knowing human anatomy and even animal anatomy is a MUST. I really enjoyed your video :)

Just graduated from an art degree. Your lessons are more in depth and practically applicable than some of the guidance I got at university, especially when it comes to discussing the necessary tasks and steps. Also, the best thing about all your videos is seeing you draw in them, even if it’s just a 30 sec sketch of a rock or a face it’s invaluable to see how skilled artists actually work and draw. The fact that people can access these lessons for free is amazing, keep up the hard work, and thank you Marc.

i've been drawing for as long as I remember, even tried to go to school but never was able to do anything in my 30 years of existence, because of wasting time but also because I wasnt in a good place mentally. I ordered a samsung tablet a few days ago with the main purpose of taking notes during lectures. I got it second hand from another country so it's gonna take another month or so to get here, but even though the reason I got it is for school, I'm suddenly extremely excited to try out art on it and just can't wait for it to get here

It is crazy how much this has helped me, and I haven’t even done any of these exercises yet! My main struggle with art is being creative enough to come up with something on my own, without relying completely on a reference. I’m just a dumb beginner but I wanted to start commissions - no contacts. Not even 20+ views over my commission sheets. It’s honestly really discouraging but it also just makes me want to get better so I can stick out more in the industry.
hey, another dumb beginner here. My advice for what to do if you want to stick out more in the industry is by drawing what YOU LIKE drawing. If there's a piece that you have already done and you really enjoyed it, then do it again, but maybe use different colors, or a different brush, or even give yourself a smaller canvas to work with.

@zenith613 That's awesome! One digital app that I highly recommend (and the only one that I use) is Krita. It's amazing and pretty easy to get used to for beginners. I hope your first piece goes really well! :)
I've drew alot back in highschool and coming back after 6 years... I just feel so lost and when i do finish one and look at my old stuff.. i feel conflicted but i'll give it a try again i guess.

Sir Marc i hardly ever comment ever, but got to say you heavly inspired me, the way you talk and explain and how you addapt to the farious Age and type of ppl really proves that you are a proffessional and good teacher, you can make your information reach all type of diferent ppl whit diferent ways of understanding i have allways found drawing really interesting the way you can expose and communicate whit other ppl throu images allways impressed me since i was a kid but i never really invested too much efford or time on this thing i love so much, once i got older i tryed to invest and improve i watched lots of tutorials and basics but i never understood how important they were, iknew they where important but never understood why, so i got unmotivated got lots of ideas but never could put them in practice has effective has i wanted, so i got demotivated, but after watching this video i kinda accepted the challenge i inputed on myself thanks a bunch, this time i will try to be more patience, and like you sayd manage expectations. thanks alot Sensei, the way you expose this type of information voluntary is trully impressive, hope the best of good on your objectives. cheers!
This actually helped me so much. I didn't know where to start and what to learn first at all. This video saved my life fr, it's so well explained and it's really motivating too. I always see lots of artists around me being way better than me at a younger age, so I stopped drawing around five years ago. It took ages to accept that I have my own pace and that I shouldn't compare myself to others and I'm glad you mentioned that too. All in all an amazing video

This was actually super helpful, I got down on myself recently for perpetually needing references. As you explained why you should use references and how to use them in the best way I realised I am doing that. I even realised that with one thing (mushrooms) I truly understand how they work in and out because of references and that is the reason why I don't need the references anymore when drawing them.

Thank you so much for making this video! Even though I'm not a beginner, it helped a lot. I was having trouble with gathering all of the fundamentals, and which I should study more often. I've been drawing for 2 and a half years. At the start, I learned a lot from youtube videos. In between I used references and just sketched a lot. But now I'm getting back into learning and I'm going to do it right, thanks to your video!

You've been my number one teacher here in the internets, I'm documenting my own progress into a semi-tutorial series but im an amateur, this makes me feel like im on the right path and maybe shouldv'e thrown more into my own videos as i summarized the first steps in learning/ succeeding in art as self-discipline number one and construction, anatomy(gesture) and perspective as the first things to hone down. I used to be very good at drawing when i was a child. As a teen and young adult, i stopped drawing... I'm 32 now, but i haven't forget illustration. I just like it a lot, but some things in my life took more relevance to me. Now i want to go back and continue learning. I would love to be a professional like you, but I have so much to learn yet, that i get overwhelmed when i try to start again. I have so so so much to learn and practice.

But then I realized that it's not much about being old, and more that the parts that I was comfortable with in my life are over, getting close to finishing school and going to college or getting a job, having to pick a career and all. Feeling all the pressure around you to have your life set already kinda makes you feel like your life is over, at least for me
