@@underratedcritic1983 the Tundra's fuel economy isn't that bad when you account for the realistic (not EPA) mpg figures that other 1/2 tons get. Also, Toyota's are no more expensive to work on compared to other trucks.

This engine is still port injection. If it had direct injection the fuel economy would be a tad better. However, port injection virtually never has anything go wrong with it, unlike the DI.
Just putting the truck itself on a diet would make it more competitive. It weighs as much as my 1998 Lincoln Navigator. It's not easy to push that kind of weight around.
Direct injected for sure. Possibly dual injected, gotta research that one. An eight speed tranny like the one in the Land Cruiser would help a mile or 2 per gallon but it’s a great driving power train as it is! The 6 speed is a velvet smooth workhorse!
The one thing I did not expect when I bought my 16 Tundra, the comfortable ride. With the 38 gallon tank, it will exceed 600 miles in range, so that comfortable ride is important. The cab is also really quiet, very little road noise. The engine noise will take over with the right amount of pressure on the flapper valve, it makes me giggle every time!

I bought a new Tundra in 2007 my first Toyota. I still have it and still love it. Not one reliability issue after almost 200k miles and 11 years of daily driving.
Why not invest in some 2.5 shocks from king or ads for $3-4000 and have even better performance? Really the only thing on a trd pro that is better in stock form is the suspension. 4000 is a lot of money, but its a lot less than youd loose by buying a new version of what you already have. Tundras run forever. Upgrade your truck and make it what you want. Also, bilstein 6112 and 5160 combo is comparable to trd pro suspension , and is about $1100. -Did you resist the urge?
tundras and tacomas are some of the best trucks out there, the tacoma is literally perfect except for towing (doesnt really need to tow cause its a small truck) and the tundra is an absolute beast in every way but you sure do pay for gas, theres still trade offs for perfect trucks, both of them are extremely reliable on top of that
Not trying to be a hater but the new taco is unreliable. It's really a shame cuz I'm a big toyota fan. Would take that tundra home in a second but yah they dropped the ball with the new 3.5l v6 in the Tacoma.
I wish someone would reveiw a superchargered 5.7 tundra. Even though TRD stopped making the supercharger a few years ago. You can still get a Magnason supercharger kit which is pretty much the same thing. If the 5.7 in stock form is great then imagine the superchargered version. I own one of the TRD units and when I take my friends for a ride and show them the full power of the truck. Its always "Holy S*#T WOW!
It is not direct injected! It's a port engine. Dual overhead cams with variable timing in all (4 camshafts); it has a variable acoustic intake. The transmission is a 6-speed automatic with 8 sets of clutches; 4 driving cutches, 4 brake clutches, and four one-way clutches. The transmission has a coolant thermostat for quicker warm up on winter. Plus a trans cooler mounted in the grill. And there are still more little things.
Bought my 07 brand new. 200K miles and no real issues. Eats tires, guzzles fuel (14.5 average) and the paint sucks but I live in Hawaii so that's pretty normal. I lifted mine 4in or so when new and have had no adverse wear from any of the components. I'd buy another one tomorrow......
Great review! I have the previous generation Tundra ('05) with a little over 300,000 trouble free miles on it. I have been considering replacing it with a new Tundra. This review is exactly what I expected from a Toyota product. Nice job!!
One of the first things (after swapping out the shift knob w/t TRD) I did to my 2016 Tundra XSP-X was to install that sweet TRD exhaust. Now I get even worse gas mileage because I love to hear that "Intelligent" (for Scott) 5.7 growl pulling away from every stop! I've been on several long trips and never experienced any drone other than when hitting long mountain inclines. Glad you noticed that unbelievable turning radius, which is just so very helpful when driving these manly machines! Lol ~
just got back from North West Ontario 850 miles pulling a fully loaded truck and 18 ft boat gas mileage around 10 to 12 mpg not great but a comfortable truck to drive long distance
Bought a Silverado in 2018 brand new at 13000 miles check engine light started coming on. After the third time went lemon law on it. Chevy bought it back and got a tundra. Fun fact dealer offered me 23k for trade in a year after I bought it for 40K. Gm bought it back for what I paid minus a a few grand after 2 years of ownership. The day they gave me the check I went down and bought a tundra limited. Tundra is way better truck. Build quality is way higher. Fit and finish is way better ride is smoother. Also no annoying engine tick. Have the TRD exhaust and it does sound great. Love my tundra. Mpg is not great. It is on par with my 07 f150.i get about 14 mpg. The power is great. Tundra is what it is great truck with what you need. The big 3 have forgotten what a truck is for.
I wanted to love this truck.....test-drove a used 2017 with 14K miles, and a brand new 2019. I found the exhaust-note droning at cruising 70 mph. Also, the leather seats seems different than my 2010 Tundra LTD, and on both test-rides, found them warm. Ended up getting a 2019 Tundra Platinum for $6K less. Yes, not the off-road ability, but for 98% of my driving, the Platinum is nicer and has much better seats with "ventilated" option.
LOL AT TACO STAIN! I just picture you trying to eat a taco and having the same issue as Robert Hays from the movie AIRPLANE. " I have an eating problem" *slams taco into head*
love the videos man, you do a fantastic job. The 5.7 in the tundras are not direct injection, still multiport EFI. I believe the Lexus LX series feature the direct injection version of the motor.
i have always liked the TUNDRA as a truck in the segment, it always had a great ride, good sound dampening, and over all a very refined truck... just power, Fuel economy, interior quality, and features are behind that of RAM, GMC, CHEVY, and F150
Finally, someone used the word "confounding" to describe the big back seats. It is ridiculous. The double-cab is plenty big enough and provides for a bigger bed and under seat storage.
Thank you 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂😂hahahhahahahahahhaahahaha broooooooo why would say that the one thing he really said in the video was wrong 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 bro how is this man a mechanic loll

Not only does heat go up not down but the tundra 5.7 IS NOT direct fuel injection. The 3UR-FE is a 5.7-liter (5663 cc) engine designed for use in Toyota Tundra/Sequoia/Land Cruiser, and Lexus LX570 vehicles, without the D-4S gasoline direct injection.
Disable the traction control by holding the TC button down. See the TC light come on then hold it down one more time and watch for the auto lsd to turn off.
I’ve got an 03 4runner, 4.7L. Put a Magnaflow Cat-back exhaust in it. IMO it is the perfect sound for it. Not too loud and doesn’t drone when cruising, but mash the gas pedal and it has a mean throaty growl as it revs up to redline.
0W-20 is on the thinner side, but the truck does have a dedicated oil cooler, so it should easily keep the oil in an optimal viscosity range, even under high engine load. The oil would have flow advantages in cold weather and, of course, lower internal friction.
Just driving from west of Freeport to Houston, TX. I've gotten 14.7 plus, it seems to do much better with Shell or Chevron gas, drops into the 13's with Exxon or Mobil, some vehicles just seem to like different fuels, and I know some will say I'm wrong, but it seems my last F-150 got better mileage on Shell or Chevron too. We went to Nashville in April 2015, across LA., MS. up thru AL. into TN, beautiful drive. Up & down, around curves, good roads. And it was really apparent that trip.
I believe this video may be mistitled as the 2017 TRD Pros don't come in Mag Grey. Cement, White and Barcelona Red are the only options for '17. This is probably a '16
It has a dated interior. It has poor fuel economy. It hasn't been refreshed since the Bush administration. All these knocks against it and I still bought one. It's still the most reliable truck you can buy in the segment.
Just came here from the Raptor vid, and though I don't understand these trucks, I'd take this over that raptor if I had to. That motor just sounds great
He was being sarcastic. And actually, you're wrong too. Hot AIR goes up because it is less dense than the cool air around it. Heat radiates in all directions.
Holy crap. I have a 1995 Toyota 4WD Hiace and the set of buttons for mirror, dash light brightness etc looks almost identical. 20 years design development?
I'm a 40-something with 3 kids. I should definitely get a minivan. But I watched this video and now obviously I want a Tundra. Either Savage reviews a Sienna now, or my kids are being raised on a truck.
The TRD pro models are the Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner. I liked the lotus comparison though it should have been that it's like the opposite of getting into a lotus, gotta jump instead of crawl.
The opposite. 0W20 is a thin oil and most modern engines use it these days. That being said, engineers put an oil cooler on it as they expected owners to "work" the truck by towing and hauling. An oil cooler, obviously, reduces the oil temp and makes it last longer, and by extension puts less strain on the engine as the oil will be more in the optimum temp range. The old way of doing this was to put very large oil capacities in engines so that more oil would get circulated and get a chance to cool down.
Next time you get a Tundra for review try out the tow/haul mode. My 2010 w/ the 4.6L V8 will downshift for corners and then hold a gear through the corner exit.
have u tried the new Titan v8 pro4x I have tried that one u are driving a it nice but that Titan dam hard choice and the Titan get better gas mileage so just trying to choose lol
one reason why a truck with backseats like this exists is tax breaks for companies that buy trucks for "work". it's luxury inside something originally designed for work.
Tony Oliver Comnent don't make since any vehicle can be claimed as a tax write off that is bought for a business. That is something you don't how to prove.
overdue for push button start but otherwise it's the truck I will not be squeamish about owning. The reliability record impresses me, tho the American brands do seem to have more creature comforts and tech, I still think I'd be better long term with this truck.
Why a push button start ? Is there an advantage to it ? I prefer the traditional turn the key. And I know old cars like Model A, etc. were push button start. But am I missing something ? I've ridden in a few late model Dodge Rams with the push button. I'm not trying to be a smart aleck or anything, I just don't see any improvement, unless it's just something cool that you like. And nothing wrong with that, if we all wanted the same truck, we'd eventually have one choice, that's never good.
glehman01 Well for a lot of us others, the new normal of keeping the key in our pocket to open the doors, trunks, and in the starting of the vehicle is a change so welcome that we have little to no plans to go back to the old way. It's a creature comfort that is appealing enough that many of us will NOT choose a vehicle if it's an absent feature. As a consumer, the idea of being out-argued into why I'm unreasonable or to advocate for or insist on a feature and thus should simply accept the other. Well, we are past that now. I dare any salesman to argue me into acceptance of an alternative that I otherwise want. Promise, that vehicle with stay on his lot. Just the friendly perspective of a consumer that knows what he wants, and wants what he wants and that knows there are options in the marketplace that will supply him/her exactly that.
Fair enough. If that's what you want then that's what you should get, as I said, if we all wanted the same thing, soon our choices would be pretty limited, I wasn't being critical, I thought there was an advantage I had missed. But it sounds like a choice you've made. And that's cool.
Bob Dobalina lol love my lotus. rev 400 sc kit pushing 313hp 243tq with a curb weight of 1984lb...too much fun. test drove the tundra trd pro. shitty mpg and lacks power. overeated truck in imo!
I'm not a pick up truck type, but your videos are good enough to make me want one. I hope you can make a decent living at this, you deserve it.
I grew up with Chevys. That's how I learn how to work on cars, but I own a 2016 Tundra and I know I won't have any issues.

It has a dated interior. It has poor fuel economy. It hasn't been refreshed since the Bush administration. All these knocks against it and I still bought one. It's still the most reliable truck you can buy in the segment.
Have you had any problems with the air induction pump. I keep reading that it is a costly repair. I'm thinking about getting one.
slickeye watson no sir I have not. I’ve had two tundras and outside of rotors, I’ve done nothing to either one.
How does Toyota stuff a v8 in a camery for nascar without producing it for sale??
I thought the 5.7 liter V8 was MPI not GDI? In the video it is stated that it is GDI, can Savage geese clarify, please?
Just came here from the Raptor vid, and though I don't understand these trucks, I'd take this over that raptor if I had to. That motor just sounds great
Great video. Watched it from start to finish
The statement of the mechanic was wrong. Heat goes up, not down. Cold goes down.
He was being sarcastic. And actually, you're wrong too. Hot AIR goes up because it is less dense than the cool air around it. Heat radiates in all directions.
Robert Hills Jr In the case of a car or truck, cold air comes from the front gets heated and then goes away thru the spaces at the botton.
I'm buying one most definitely. ☺😍😘😋😄😉
But there's another option. You can also have it with a Double Cab 6.5 long bed.
Why belt suspension that's an old school suspension older cars have? Mostly McPherson strut is used these days.

It's got 3 seats and a huge cab. The kids will pickup your vibe as a minivan driver. Give them pride as a role model not defeat.
Considered the TRD Pro but bought Sierra crew cab instead. Inside GMC is whisper quiet! Love that Tundra rear window though.
Did you drive one with the Toyota Sway Bar installed??? I heard it was night and day...
I can't wait for you to test drive the 2018 trd sport tundra. Especially on those curves 👍🏻
The TRD pro models are the Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner. I liked the lotus comparison though it should have been that it's like the opposite of getting into a lotus, gotta jump instead of crawl.
Why is there still no rear locker on the tundra!?! Why is there not a supercharged tundra from factory!?!
when is the new body style coming out???
They're not embossed, they're debossed
I like simple trucks or cars. Easy co controls for ac. Had 2015 mustang for rental. You have to do so many things just adjust the temperature you like
Any chance you can do a review on the 2020 Tundra? Pro or Trd offroad
What is the name of the color on this Toyota Tundra that you tested?
This or the Ridgeline BE? Help me decide.
I don't know why toyota don't make big truck bed?
Why won't they put the push button start in the Tundra's?
You missed the 4Runner trd pro. Savage and turdowski are gonna go pull things eh
+tmwall25 Thanks I could not remember at the time too many cars to keep track of!
lexus ls 460 f sport please
Is Turbowski challenged?
i want a chevy colorado or toyota tacoma which one should i get
+Janelle Id choose Tacoma right now
Chevy equinox
Janelle Tacoma is 10 times better
Janelle Prius
Taco!!
Great video! Can you please do a video on the new 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD pro?
5.7 V8 in a Tacoma, think about it.....
I wish
@@nonooohlii And I wish that Toyota would make a small-size truck like they started out with. The "mid-size" Tacoma is freakin' massive!
5.7 V8 in a single cab Toyota HiLux
The 4.6 V8 would be plenty.
Can someone explain the oil cooler with 0w20 oil? Is this because the oil is so thick?
The opposite. 0W20 is a thin oil and most modern engines use it these days. That being said, engineers put an oil cooler on it as they expected owners to "work" the truck by towing and hauling. An oil cooler, obviously, reduces the oil temp and makes it last longer, and by extension puts less strain on the engine as the oil will be more in the optimum temp range. The old way of doing this was to put very large oil capacities in engines so that more oil would get circulated and get a chance to cool down.
Why complain to what you can add later on, like running board or off-road tires for going off-road.
Next time you get a Tundra for review try out the tow/haul mode. My 2010 w/ the 4.6L V8 will downshift for corners and then hold a gear through the corner exit.
That Mustang wasn't broken down, it was being restrained. Glad I found SavageGeese from The Smoking Tire Podcast.
have u tried the new Titan v8 pro4x I have tried that one u are driving a it nice but that Titan dam hard choice and the Titan get better gas mileage so just trying to choose lol
one reason why a truck with backseats like this exists is tax breaks for companies that buy trucks for "work". it's luxury inside something originally designed for work.
Tony Oliver Comnent don't make since any vehicle can be claimed as a tax write off that is bought for a business. That is something you don't how to prove.
Random comment: the 3UR-FBE in those is NOT direct injected. Still, great content as usual.
I been thinking about trade my 2015 tundra SR5 for this Pro version.
Direct injection with maybe Atkinson cycle and an 7/8 speed transmission could help with 1-2 mpg.
does it have TRD specific oil filter
Little bit of nit-picking: It's not embossed. Embossed is when letters are raised up from a surface.
yes indeed, stamped was correct wording. head was in ass.
overdue for push button start but otherwise it's the truck I will not be squeamish about owning.
J Thom Hell no, the feeling of putting in and turning the key is orgasmic
Sounds even better with the TRD air intake!
High quality footage. What kind of camera do you use?
lol, have a lotus exige. deciding this or lariat supercrew 5.0v8..which u think i should get
Joe O You should get this. I have it and it is awesome! The best part is the huge fuel tank.
PS the lotus exige suuucks
Bob Dobalina lol love my lotus. rev 400 sc kit pushing 313hp 243tq with a curb weight of 1984lb...too much fun. test drove the tundra trd pro. shitty mpg and lacks power. overeated truck in imo!
Joe O lacks power when it has more horsepower than your lotus?
Joe O and the shitty mpg is made up by the huge tank. It's like a 40 gallon tank.
Lol you dont know much about autos do you?!
does the TRD PRO have 4.10 gears in the rear differential?
4.30s
