One of my favourites! I will definitely touch on Lonely Soul in the near future. Unfortunately it won't be a full sample deconstruction, like some of these tracks have been. The strings were actually orchestrated and recorded for Lonely Soul, so there is no sample behind them! Nevertheless, I will take a close look at it and maybe reconstruct/rerecord the strings themselves. Not sure yet.
I believe the Jules Blattner Group track is the only credited sample from Unreal too, which could mean a few things, but it tells me that the guitar from that track was seen as an important lead line/hook. It really does fit well together.
I never noticed the layer of the break beat before! but after you pointed out it' obvious. it really gives a lot more energy in that part. it's amazing to see all the subtle programming that DJ shadow does
Glad you noticed that Kaz! That was probably my favourite detail about Unreal, from a production standpoint. It reminded me a lot of the drum loop layering that we used to do back in the day with some of the recordings we made. Except Shadow's ability and subtlety was just so far ahead at that time.

Brilliant. I love this album and great to understand how it is constructed. I have a greater appreciation for it now. and Yes, Unreal is my preferred version.

Overlaying two separate drum loops to sound like the drummer is hitting harder is genius! Did he produce this on an MPC? Great work deciphering this and sharing with the rest of us mate.
There isn't a whole lot of sample based music on that album unfortunately. It was really the DJ Shadow tracks from Psyence Fiction that are almost all sample based and basically just Shadow tracks with vocals. He was really in his element around this time too. These tracks are something special without a doubt.
Yeah, that's a great setting and I do have it turned on. I often talk about a loop clicking on playback because back when I started sampling and looping, it was a pretty important detail for making a listenable track and there were no settings for faded clip edges in the software I used in the 90s. I can see that it's probably not the most useful information these days. Cheers

you need to go into Ableton settings and turn of the fade on clip edges

Where does the choir sample in the ian brown version come from?
Great question. To my ear, it sounds a lot like a Mellotron on the vocal setting. Maybe they had one in the studio where Ian was recording his vocals.
