    I love "feel it all around", but man am I bummed this is a straight rip sample off another's song. I mean, it'd be cool if it were just a bass riff rip, or something to that degree. But it's bass, drums, and all...Make's me realize how much lazier I could be with my own music. But a cool chill wave lo-fi track nonetheless. I can see why Washed Out never truly performs all elements live in proper replica to the album counter-part.

    Hey Karl, do you think it would make for a cool video to take an original selection of samples picked by you and constructing an original track, even if it’s just a rough draft or messing around type of experience I think it would be really fun see knowing your talent and how well you understand your programs and software. I love how u mixed WDYSLL pt 4 sax and part 2 drums with the high noon piano in the outro.

    • @KarlBoltzmann
      @KarlBoltzmann 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you and great video suggestion! I've been a little shy about doing it because music making is such a personal thing, but I have put a lot of thought in to starting a weekly live-stream video series where I demonstrate sampling/recording/composing and making a track. Each video could have an overarching concept and restrictions to keep it interesting, like having a small basket of samples to work from like you mentioned. Or maybe people could give me their own samples, of famous/not famous tracks they want me to sample and build something new with. That could be fun to try.

    • @tristandavid2343
      @tristandavid2343 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@KarlBoltzmannI was hesitant to suggest the idea because I do realize how music making is mostly a personal and private type of process generally speaking. However I think it would make a really interesting video series taking the viewer along that type of creative process in sampling and even inspire more people to do it themselves

    • @KarlBoltzmann
      @KarlBoltzmann 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree and honestly a large part of the reason I started this channel was to inspire people to download a DAW and make some music! I think there is a lot of potential with this idea, but I'd want to do it right. Thanks for the motivation.

  • @bryanfranco3943
    @bryanfranco3943 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Because of linear algebra. Wouldn't it be a mathematical fact that any sample can be mapped to any other sample or melody, for that matter? How could we know for sure?

    • @KarlBoltzmann
      @KarlBoltzmann 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In spite of my name, I am no mathematician so I can't say how it would relate to linear algebra, but in my world there are no hard rules to making music. So yeah, you can map any sample or mash together any and all sounds and get a result but without some thought, it'll likely sound terrible. The fun of sampling, or really making music at all is mashing sounds together in an original way that sounds interesting and pleasing to the human ear. It is an exercise in being open to accepting happy little accidents and most importantly understanding when those accidents are something special. Music and math are very much intertwined of course. Mathematics is at the foundation of almost everything in our lives but I personally don't think that math should be the main ingredient when composing music.

    Cool video! Your information is awesome. You know your stuff and did your homework. I’m not as musically inclined. I just know what I like. I have to disagree that it would be better as an EP with just the tracks featuring vocals. I think it’s one of the best albums ever from beginning to end. Removing any of it greatly depreciates the genius that is DJ Shadow. He is maybe the greatest sampler and best producer of all time.

    • @KarlBoltzmann
      @KarlBoltzmann 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the comment! In many ways I agree. I think it's shadow at his creative peak and honestly, it's lucky this album with these collaborations was made at all. That being said, I will die on the hill that there is unnecessary bloat that shouldn't have made the cut and a few tracks that just don't hit. However, the good on Psyence Fiction is so incredibly top tier that they could have added 100 more bloated/mediocre songs and it would still be a classic 10 out of 10.

    Another entertaining video. I remember reading that keyboard magazine interview with him from 1997. It’s easy to find online, great reading. Here’s what he said about High Noon - My new song is called "High Noon," a single for England, and it’s the hardest song I’ve ever done, bar none. The drum chops on that song take up 64 pads on the MPC-3000, and then more on another disk. So almost 100 pads on the drums alone, and that’s why the song was so difficult. I think when you hear it, hopefully you’ll like it. It’s a drum song.
