My Grandad died on the Montevideo leaving a wife and 3 kids behind. Thanks Pete.
For those not aware, this song is actually based on truth as the grandfather of lead singer Peter Garrett really did die in the sinking of the Montevideo Maru while he was a Japanese POW in WWII.
And prayers to those on that ship, was finally rediscovered in April 2023. So hopefully Peter and others now have some closure on their losses.

The line about the mother who always welcomes the spring and a stranger seems to get me in the old cockles every time.
This is a most beautiful ballad that I have just rediscovered. It is also a wonderful poem about one's parents and grandparents. I can place every word here - it speaks so perfectly to my own recollections and experiences of my family elders.
And the chorus is clearly around the 23rd psalm - I'm not really religious but it is just bloody perfect.

this song confirms that Midnight Oil is simply one of the most talented artists ever. There is no arguing about the incredible musical talent of this band. And the passion and emotion in every song, well there is pretty much no comparison. So sad that this band will always be known for only one song...

Chet Nakada The "stiff arm from Hades" lyric was an intensely personal, autobiographical lyric from Peter Garrett given his mother died in a house fire. I think he was studying at uni at the time. :-(

The lyrics are about loss of loved ones but the visuals are about love for family and community.
This song out of all the Oils' many tunes just makes me cry every time with both sadness and joy.

My great uncle was also on this boat. After they took Rabaul, he was stationed at the hospital.
I’ve often wondered if any other descendants were interested. His enlistment and subsequent disappearance and death rocked our family, so much so the ripples are seen today 😩😭❤️🇦🇺

I remember washing machines like that. Can't help but remember. Got a finger caught in the wringer when I was 6 years old in 1959. Still can see the scar. Took me to the hospital for an overnight. Was given a quart of Coke. They didn't give it back to me the next day when I was to go home. Dang!

Donald Badowski Peter Garrett studied to become a lawyer before committing to the Oils and later become a Federal Minister in the Australian government. As for his musical career, watching him perform live was quite an experience- an amazing front man!
