    Truganini - Lyrics
There's a road train going nowhere
Roads are cut, lines are down
We'll be staying at the Roma bar
    Till that monsoon passes on
The backbone of this country's broken
The land is cracked and the land is sore
Farmers are hanging on by their fingertips
We cursed and stumbled across that shore
    What for?
I hear much support for the monarchy
I hear the Union Jack's to remain
    I see Namatjira in custody
    I see Truganini's in chains
And the world won't stand still
Blue collar work it don't get you nowhere
You just go round and round in debt
Somebody's got you on that treadmill, mate
And I hope you're not beaten yet
I hear much support for the monarchy
I hear the Union Jack's to remain
    I see Namatjira in custody
    I see Truganini's in chains
I hear much support for the monarchy
I see the Union Jack in flames, let it burn
    I see Namatjira with dignity
    I see Truganini's in chains
And the world won't stand still
And the world won't stand still
    Chains...
And the world won't stand still
And the world won't stand still

Never forget that Peter Garrett and his bandmates defiantly stood on the Avenue of the Americas, and openly mocked the oil giant Exxon in front of its NYC building with their music for its horrific pollution of Prudhoe Bay (The Valdez) -- when no one else had the guts to say a word. They shut down the busiest city street in the world for an hour and excoriated the criminals, who would not come outside to face them.

One of the top sleeper bands from the eighties. Countless number of great songs that no one has ever even heard, unless they made the airwaves. The bass line on this particular song is tremendous. Their songs have real meaning, and a lot of it is happening right before our very eyes in the modern day. These guys were way ahead of their time.

This video, I figured out was made for the American audience, when MTV still had music. I later bought a DVD of the Oil's videos and "live" -it's not on there.
I went to Australia in 1986, traveled with my Parents for three weeks, flying between locations - river extrusion into the Outback from Darwin, Wine tours, sheep farm visit, and Tasmania. I got into the Oil's after, buying "10-1" after seeing "the power and the passion" I saw them "live" only once in 1994, here in Ohio, powerful and awesome! I have learned a fair amount of Australian history, and culture, and would hope to return, someday. The references in "Tuganini" to keeping the crown, there was a movement, by vote, in the 90's to not have the British Monarch still "rule/preside" over independent Australia in the 90's -yet the vote of the nation was to keep the Royal link. Around 2000, I was living in Chicago, Grad School. I was waiting for an EL train (elevated/subway -to those who don't know) A man sat down, talking on his cell phone, sounded like he was from Oz. When he was off his phone, I asked If he was from Oz -yeah! I told him that I'd traveled there years back. I asked if they were going to do another vote on the Royals. He said "maybe in a few years" but the old generation still like them. Then, he said "What have the Pommies, done for us, really" -I knew the term, and the question made me think of Monty Python "Life of Brian" with the question of the Roman, and answer of about 16 benefits. I responded, "Well they sent their convicts to start you nation -then, they sent you into some horrible battles like Gallipoli" "Too F**kin' right! You know out history, Mate" - The EL arrived, yet each needed a different train, ended the conversation.
    Dedicated fan of the Oil's!

The Oils have made a LOT of great music for a "One-Hit Wonder" - and "Earth and Sun and Moon" is the perfect album....not a bad track on it.

    • @Starman111065
      @Starman111065 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Only from an American pop perspective were they a "one-hit wonder." This band spent decades under the American radar putting out meaningful, well-crafted work. What I love most about them: they did it without writing songs about sex, drugs and rock and roll (while rocking out). How refreshing. The only American band I can think of quite like that is Rage Against The Machine.

    • @jeffreyduda8786
      @jeffreyduda8786 7 ปีที่แล้ว

As an American, I defiantly disagree with you on this perspective. I have MANY friends who love the Oil, and they are beyond excited for this apparent reunion. They created album ART, with a few singles interspersed. BSM is one of the greatest albums ever recorded, period.

Eu e meu irmão éramos os únicos que morávamos no sítio e ouvíamos Rock e Heavy Metal ao invés de "sertanojo".

Maybe it's because "Earth and sun and moon" was the first album of the band that I bought on a CD version (previous ones were on audio tapes), I've listened to it so many times I can't count. And every track on it is engraved in my memory, maybe because I was coming back from a year in Asia when this album was released here. And "Truganini" is one of the great protest song ever made.

Several years ago I heard this song in the car, I have been heard it so many times before, but this day suddenly something turned me on! I have spent so many time until I found this track and several years later I found the name of it. I knew that the name of the band is "Midnight Oil", but I didn't know that the song's name is not "I see" but "Truganini". And I love it!!!
