So in the book, Spookley basically becomes the next evolution of pumpkin.

What does make the cut usually goes for very high prices, ($90+ range, if I remember correctly) and is typically given as gifts, not to be eaten, but to be displayed. Even in American culture though, how many people would pass up such a rare and unique *natural* genetic mutation? Like, you KNOW that kind of thing wouldn't happen often, so a lot of people would probably get it BECAUSE it's different.
I relate to Spookly. I have a deformed toe on my left foot, and when I was born the doctor went on this minute-long rant about how I'm a mistake and a freak of nature. When he was done, he broke into song about how ugly my toe was and the whole hospital joined in. Even the other mothers in labor sang about my ugly toe.

You know, when I was born in a hospital, I had two differently coloured eyes, still do. And the doctor proceeded to insult the hell out of me, then sing a catchy song about how ugly I looked with two differently coloured eyes. All the pregnant mums joined in, the nurse joined in, my mum joined in and even some newborn children started blabbering to the tune of the song. Hell, you could even hear unborn fetuses humming to the tune.

Tbh this is a really good representation of living with disabilities. Your life will be harder, you will lose, you will get laughed at, but you will have things you're good at that other people aren't.
I don’t kniw if anybody else did this. But as a young child, my family and I would watch a movie before trick or treating. Not even kidding, the movie of choice was almost always spookly the square pumpkin… watching it now being older, I realized that this movie was really weird. I never realized how mean the WHOLE TOWN WAS.

I remember watching this movie when I was in preschool but I always thought the moral was “be nice” or “treat others the way you wanna be treated”. But now that Danny brought up these points about the movie I think his explanation makes more sense but kids can’t really examine it as “if you’re different everyone will hate you unless you help them in some way”. It’s a good point and it completely changes my perspective on this movie. I like that it subtly introduces kids to the harsh reality they have to struggle through in life.

it’s strange, cuz the whole “if you’re disabled, nobody will treat you well unless you are useful to them” is very true and commonly explored. but I don’t think I’ve really seen a movie say “yeah sometimes your disability means you can’t do anything you want, but that’s okay because you have your own strengths.” And I kind of love that. Disabled people get told all the time “you can do anything if you try!” and it’s so frustrating cuz it’s just not true. Spookley’s shape realistically does not allow him to participate in the games and in real life, that’s just how it is sometimes. Like I feel like I’m 100% digging way too deep into this lol but I think radical acceptance is really important and it being shown in the theme is kind of cool. Although yeah, it would be nice to have disabled characters respected for who they are and not just when they benefit others.

That was honestly how I always took the books, as a kid. So, you're not really digging too deep imho. ^^;; I suspect that was much closer to the intended meaning, the books felt super clear about the meaning, but I also probably have slight rose-tinted glasses in that regard. Either way, the point stands that it's not digging that deep, I pretty much grew up on the book and that was definitely what the general take away, even for kids, was.

You know, when I was born in a hospital, I had two differently coloured eyes, still do. And the doctor proceeded to insult the hell out of me, then sing a catchy song about how ugly I looked with two differently coloured eyes. All the pregnant mums joined in, the nurse joined in, my mum joined in and even some newborn children started blabbering to the tune of the song. Hell, you could even hear unborn fetuses humming to the tune.

I don’t kniw if anybody else did this. But as a young child, my family and I would watch a movie before trick or treating. Not even kidding, the movie of choice was almost always spookly the square pumpkin… watching it now being older, I realized that this movie was really weird. I never realized how mean the WHOLE TOWN WAS.
Fun fact: a corn maze I go to every year actually sponsors Spookley. There’s a giant inflatable Spookley and there’s an entire other mini corn maze dedicated to him. Send help.
Update: I still go to this maze yearly with friends. Spookley has only gotten stronger. They’re selling plushies of him and plushies of that Christmas cat. We’re running out of time to escape him.

I remember watching this movie when I was in preschool but I always thought the moral was “be nice” or “treat others the way you wanna be treated”. But now that Danny brought up these points about the movie I think his explanation makes more sense but kids can’t really examine it as “if you’re different everyone will hate you unless you help them in some way”. It’s a good point and it completely changes my perspective on this movie. I like that it subtly introduces kids to the harsh reality they have to struggle through in life.
Did none of them get chosen from the patch before winter? They all seem to be in the sequel Christmas film... I guess this pumpkin patch is just for photos and not for take-homes.

it’s strange, cuz the whole “if you’re disabled, nobody will treat you well unless you are useful to them” is very true and commonly explored. but I don’t think I’ve really seen a movie say “yeah sometimes your disability means you can’t do anything you want, but that’s okay because you have your own strengths.” And I kind of love that. Disabled people get told all the time “you can do anything if you try!” and it’s so frustrating cuz it’s just not true. Spookley’s shape realistically does not allow him to participate in the games and in real life, that’s just how it is sometimes.
Like I feel like I’m 100% digging way too deep into this lol but I think radical acceptance is really important and it being shown in the theme is kind of cool. Although yeah, it would be nice to have disabled characters respected for who they are and not just when they benefit others.

That was honestly how I always took the books, as a kid. So, you're not really digging too deep imho. ^^;; I suspect that was much closer to the intended meaning, the books felt super clear about the meaning, but I also probably have slight rose-tinted glasses in that regard. Either way, the point stands that it's not digging that deep, I pretty much grew up on the book and that was definitely what the general take away, even for kids, was.
This was one of my brother's favourite movies as a kid 😂 I still get the theme song stuck in my head, especially around this time of year with pumpkins everywhere!
