    One thing I never see people demonstrate is articulation, ala trumpet and harmonica.
    You can do the trumpet tongue thing, you can do harmonica-style throat vibrato, and you can combine "key stopping" with "tongue stopping" to get a very specific attack on the notes.
    Just saying: human lungs (and throat and tongue) are more than just a compressor.

      @@WillBorza It sounds better when you do and is basically an easier to play Chromatic Harmonica at that point.

    The Gregorian chant Dies Irae is used heavily in movies and music to represent death. You may not recognize it at first, but then you look up compilation videos on TH-cam.
    There are songs older than Auld Lang Syne in use today, but they usually aren’t united music and lyrics. The music could be written down somewhere and the lyrics somewhere else-the poem Auld Lang Syne was probably sung to a different tune long ago. And it’s not Middle English, it’s the Scots language, which descended from the Scottish dialect of Middle English.

  • @MrLandale
    @MrLandale 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    4:50 I would say Greensleaves. It was written by an anonymous composer in 1580. The melody for Auld Lang Syne is from early 1800s.

      +Jan Gustavsson good call! I bet you're right! At least in western music. There may be some Ragas still in circulation or something.

      Supposedly it was composed by a King to declare his love for a woman. A very timeless and sort of haunting melody that was appropriated by Christianity for "What Child Dis?".

      Also Auld Lang Syne is in Scots, not Middle English. ;)

      @@WillBorza Dont know about the West, but in Korea, there's a piece of music that they talk about in music class that's almost 1400 years old, called Sujecheon. It's been passed down for over a thousand years until it was finally written down a couple hundred years ago. I doubt your average Korean would recognize it, unless they're rly into Korean Classical music, though. There are some pieces of Japanese classical music that are around that old as well.

    Greensleeves is traditionally considered to have been written by King Henry VIII, but I've read that there is no definitive proof of this. Another very old tune that's pretty well known today is Scarborough Fair, popularized by Simon & Garfunkle. Anyway, I recently got the P37D, and it is very nice. I am happy with it!

  • @PaganVegas

    This is years gone by now, but for Auld Lang Syne, I'll mention that "syne" is not "song" in Scots; it is closer to "since". "The Old Long Song" is actually a completely different set of lyrics - not a translation. Auld Lang Syne is more properly interpreted as "the times we shared long ago"- implying "we've been through a lot, my friend". Great video.

    Hey, I hope you'll see & answer my question! I just got my 2nd Melodica and I am just as unhappy with it as I am with the 1st one! I've had a Hohner Superforce and now a Walther. I'm now considering to spend more for this Yamaha if it works better. You didn't seem to have the struggle I have: Do the notes respond very diferently to the same air pressure? Because mine do - one note can be very sensitive while for example for the low C, I need 3x as much air as for the ones next to it. Ergo I can't play them silently + it happens all the time that the tones come way too late because I have to adjust my air. Did you notice that problem with your Yamaha too? Or with any other melodica, so you could compare it to the yamaha?

    • @WillBorza
      @WillBorza  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! I understand the problem you’re having and I see how frustrating it would be. I’ve never had this problem with the Yamaha, so brand/build quality may be your problem. But also remember to clean your melodica regularly, brush your teeth before playing, etc.

    • @99xara99
      @99xara99 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WillBorza Thanks. I ordered a Yamaha now and I hope that I'll like it better. Do you clean your melodica from the inside and how, or just the surface?

      @99xara99 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @1518 Hey! I did get mine and I quite like it. It's still not perfect and some keys are harder to blow than other but it's much better than the others I had and it's better in tune (still not entirely though). For me it was worth it.

    I bought this exact melodica (same color even) from Amazon and it’s so far out of tune that it’s unplayable. Each octave is out of tune with each other octave. All chords are automatically out of tune, and forget about trying to play with someone else. Using my pederson tuner, each note shows that it’s off by between 25 and 50 cents of pitch. I saw so many good videos about this model, but it really is a piece of junk, and my friend’s $25 no-name melodica sounds world’s better. I’ve been mixing audio with a pair of yamaha monitors for 16 years now, I guess they take their electronics manufacturing far more seriously than their instrument manufacturing.

    • @WillBorza
      @WillBorza  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you should return that one and ask for a new one that isn’t broken. Mine plays fairly decently in tune. It’s not perfect, but I’m also not trying to be a professional melodica performer.
